Re:Not conspiracy, but..An odd webmaster choice maybe? I wonder if they generate the robots.txt based on a 404 report - something like
- Grep the errors log for 404's from search engines.
- Parse out the directory paths.
- Add those to robots.txt.
/infocus/iraq/ - clearly has an index. However, if they moved or renamed a file under that path, it might be generating 404's. From personal experience, I've had bad requests from Googlebot for files that were over 4 years old.
I have to agree that it's more strange than sinister. Besides, I'm not sure that the web site is the official archive for white house statements. -
Re:FunnyThe day whitehouse.com is forced off the web by puritans in the whitehouse.gov, is the day I pick up a gun to remove a Dictator!
Hah. Just joking. No
... I wasn't. Yes, I was too (no, I'm not joking). -
google still finds whitehouse.gov (and org)Seems like the Whitehouse would be more interested in having their views on the matter come up higher in the search engines than other views. That is - NOT be blocked from searches.
Right now if you google for "iraq" and "whitehouse", http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/iraq/ is the top link. Second link is also on whitehouse.gov Amusingly, http://www.whitehouse.org (an anti-bush site) comes up second in the list of sites. If whitehouse.gov manages to push itself out of the robots lists, then guess which site people will see most often?
-
Not conspiracy, but I don't know what it *is* eith
If you try actually *loading* the directories listed in the robots.txt, they don't exist. Not one. Not by going to their index.html or trying to find them through the site navigation. While they could still be accused of deleting them, many of the links are unlikely to have existed in the first place (http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/heartland-to
u r-gallery/iraq? /president/holiday/decorations/iraq? /president/tee-ball-01/iraq? ) This may be just some IT grunt running a bad script on robots.txt. -
Re:Drawing farfetched conclusions
If you read the file(http://www.whitehouse.gov/robots.txt), it looks like they're trying to keep their whole site off of Google and other search engines, but allowing their own search engine (whsearch) to search the normal parts site.
Annoying? Yes.
Not playing by the established norms of the Internet? Yes.
Would I run my site that way? No.
A conspiracy? No. -
SHHH!!!
Goodness knows we can't have googlebots archiving all of those top-secret/confidential web pages at the whitehouse. I guess we'll just have to live with the top-secret info that has already been archived.
What's that? Oh, all of the real top-secret stuff is at the NSA website?
Never mind then.
-
Re:Other, arguably more reasonable explanations
Maybe, but I would think they might also be looking for "shady" spiders that ignored robots.txt. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't a few honeypot pages in there too.
Oh, crap. I just plugged in /firstlady/images/iraq, and now you tell me I'd better watch out. Damn this static IP address!
Quick, Slashdot that link before the Agents get to my cube! -
Truly Frightening.

Re:Err.. King Bush II is an Oilman
...made pathetic policy choices that made the coming recession worse...The last recession started in the last year of Clinton's administration with the 'dot com' bomb and ended in January 2003. It was the mildest recession ever according to Alan Greespan. So how did the Mr. Bush's policy choices impact the US economy? Looks more like he stopped a slide into recession cause by a stock market bubble created by the previous administration's eight years of mismanagement of the economy
...and is a complete moron...That graduated from one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. Where did you go to school and what is your GPA? What does a nurse call the man that graduates last in his class from medical school? I believe the correct form of address is 'Doctor'.
I love how the socialist-democrats like to attack the person with unsupported ambiguous statements negative statements or 'Have you stopped beating you wide yet' type rhetoric. The next phase when confronted with facts is for the liberals to refuse you your 1st amendment rights by any means possible because as we all know 'the end justifies the means'.

Re:Do they really expect to win?
Actually, you're incorrect. There are very specific rules and guidelines regarding the classification and declassification of government data.
EO 12958 (Originally by Clinton, amended by Bush this year) specifies that all *new* information is to be automatically declassified after 10 years. Also, any older data 25 years of age or older is to be automatically declassified (starting Jan 2007) if it's considered "historically significant" by Title 44 USC -- regardless of whether or not it's been reviewed.
These are the only justifications for keeping something classified past the declassification deadline:
(1) reveal the identity of a confidential human source, or a human intelligence source, or reveal information about the application of an intelligence source or method;
(2) reveal information that would assist in the development or use of weapons of mass destruction;
(3) reveal information that would impair U.S. cryptologic systems or activities;
(4) reveal information that would impair the application of state of the art technology within a U.S. weapon system;
(5) reveal actual U.S. military war plans that remain in effect;
(6) reveal information, including foreign government information, that would seriously and demonstrably impair relations between the United States and a foreign government, or seriously and demonstrably undermine ongoing diplomatic activities of the United States;
(7) reveal information that would clearly and demonstrably impair the current ability of United States Government officials to protect the President, Vice President, and other protectees for whom protection services, in the interest of the national security, are authorized;
(8) reveal information that would seriously and demonstrably impair current national security emergency preparedness plans or reveal current vulnerabilities of systems, installations, infrastructures, or projects relating to the national security;
or
(9) violate a statute, treaty, or international agreement.
The government is not supposed to classify data "just because". yeah, they can in practice, but that's not the point. -
terrorists
terrorists are motivated by embitterred love. they are not fighting a human enemy, with feelings and fear --- they are fighting an inhumane monster, possibly evil, in the case of the islamists, they see us as decedance, evil, and sexual perversion _in carnate_, spilling our corrupt semen on their land and hearts. until you understand this you have no hope of understanding that, there are linux/OpenSourceSoftware users, that are very stressed over the ongoing oppression of many peoples from large multinational conglomerates and other entities not worth mentioning in specific --- what would you do if enough politicians were greased that linux became illegal to use? what would you do if it became a felony to use an open source operating system? a felony to view source without a liscence? illegal to even talk about software algorythms that are under copyright? what then? would you join with the rest ofthe brewing resistance and begin to resist? would you, when red/martial law is declared indefinitely, be willing to stand up and fight to restore lost freedoms? to vanquish the monster that has ruined the greatness that was your country? perhaps some of this may not apply if you live in a country with sane laws, and sane lawmakers. i assume, quite possibly incorrectly that you live in the states, canada, the UK or australia, and with a possible kindred sympathy if you live in china or some nearby-china place.

BUSH = LIES
QUESTION: But, still, those countries who didn't support the Iraqi Freedom operation use the same argument, weapons of mass destruction haven't been found. So what argument will you use now to justify this war?
THE PRESIDENT: We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories. You remember when Colin Powell stood up in front of the world, and he said, Iraq has got laboratories, mobile labs to build biological weapons. They're illegal. They're against the United Nations resolutions, and we've so far discovered two. And we'll find more weapons as time goes on. But for those who say we haven't found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they're wrong, we found them.

On the Internet No One Knows You're a DogRemember the cartoon: 'On the Internet No One Knows You're a Dog'?
The main problem with adult material and the Internet is how can you tell if a person is an adult without having them prove their identity? The current least worst solution is to require a credit card number, which somehow proves you're old (or clever) enough.
Instead, perhaps you could ask questions that only adults would know the answers to, say questions about engineering, calculus or physics. Of course you'd then be allowing child progodies to access pornography (which may not be a such bad thing) and you'd obviously be locking out the 'not the full six-pack crowd'.
A seconday problem with adult material is that there are powerful lobbying groups that are trying to ban it completely. They make use of various arguments, which basically all boil down to a personal moral choice that is being made by them and not by you. This flies in the face of the freedoms supposedly allowed by western democracies. Particularly irritating is when this is done by country A which causes effects ripple effects in country B.

Re:Will people please stop making excuses for Bush
This seems to be counter to Bush's effort to "foster long-term economic growth". What's the likelyhood of a veto if Bush has to sign the bill for it to become law?
-
Interesting info from Ari Fleischer...Q Ari, how much does the President know about Mr. Poindexter's total information awareness program, and does he fully support it?
MR. FLEISCHER: Well, I think that the President supports his efforts to prevent terrorists from engaging in any attacks against the United States, while making certain that the constitutional rights and liberties of the American people are protected. That's what the President is going to make certain what is done.
Q Specifically on that program, that's been a bit controversial, much like TIPS became controversial, has he waited at all on --
MR. FLEISCHER: You'd really have to talk to Department of Defense to get a clear understanding of what that program is. I think there's been some misrepresentations of what it is. The President knows the importance of working carefully and respectfully to honor the rights of individual Americans while at the same time remain concerned that terrorists are stopped from attacking us again.

Re:"Cyber"
By the way, some people still don't realize that you can just type the middle part, leave out the www dot and the dot com part, and press CTRL-ENTER. It will automatically assume (default!) that you want a dot com world wide web page.
That's one of the first things I shut off in Mozilla...does it really take you that long to type out the URL (especially when it's been put in once before and autocomplete still knows about it)? Besides, would you want your kid to type in "whitehouse," hit Ctrl-Enter, and end up here when he really meant to go here? If you're looking up some company for which you're not sure about the URL, you're better off googling for it than if you blindly assume that www.$COMPANYNAME.com is what you want.

You know what?
In order to get a SCUBA tank filled with compressed air you have to flash certification credentials saying that you've the knowledge to use it without killing yourself.
I have dived w/o a lisance for a while now. Yeah, thats right, 70 feet down and I never had one lesson.
I was with a divemaster and other ppl who had gone though all the yada yada bs that you had to do to get your Padi lisance but I never did. And you know what? It really was not that hard.
Oh no! You say that I could have killed myself! Well damn skippy pal. You can kill youself every day by doing any number of things that don't require some sort of bs lisance, and really in much easier ways. Oh, how did I convicnce the divemaster that I was lisanced? Simple, I lied. I told him that I had one, told him however that I was a bit rusty and that if he could give me a quick refresher course that it would be all good. Then I was good to go.
That 1st set of dives was kind of rough yeah, I was learning fast and getting used to operating some equipment that I had never used before but in all reality it was not that hard. To say that you have to have a lisance to do that imo is a load of crap.
However, I am well aware that this planet is populated with a bunch of people that are fscking clueless. If they had tried to do what I did they might have ended up dead or mamed or some bs that would have caused much grief for not only themselfs but everyone that they were involved with. And so we, thanks to the general stupidity of humainity, have to have these lisances on what we consideder dangerous.
So, back to the point. Is being online w/o a lisance of having a clue dangerious? In my, even though I'm posting this as a AC I am no computer/inet noob, opinion hell no. Can you cause harm/be harmed on this open internet invention that was created upon the ideas of free speech and trust, well yeah kind of. But is the level of harm such that we have to have listancing requirements? Can you unplug your computer from the internet and still have a working machine? Of course. Can you install a better browser, or hell maybe I don't know have the powers that be enforce some anti-trust laws to prevent obvious monopolys that crank out rev after rev of software that sucks, charges you for it, and even then gets slimeballs to attack the next best thing?
Ok, I'm going to stop ranting now because I think I've made my point. It's just kind of annoying to have to pay for everyone elses ignorance/stupidity every day of your life and then watch some moron who proably knows even less about computers and life in general (even though they may even be friggen older than me) start screaming that *I* need to be lisanced to do what I've been doing for years just because they are too lazy to get a fscking clue. -

Re:Come on.......
Every story there revolves around how the US is part of some secret conspiracy to rule the world.
You are right, that is misleading: there is no secret about it! Global domination is an official policy of the US government. You did read the US National Security Strategy of 2002, didn't you? -

In other news
The government has managed in a surprisingly small amount of time to compile a database linking phone numbers and email addresses with 41M entries.
I'm sure it'll be used only for opt-in telemarketting. I mean, what else could be done with such a database? -

Re:Not pro or con - recall here, but...
The law required almost 1,000,000 signatures, and they got twice as many. At last count, I heard they had 1.7 million. If they did get 1.75 million, out of "a state of 35+ million", that would be 5%.
Last I heard, it cost them $1.8 Million to get the signatures they needed.
Adolf Hitler's government certainly wasn't "instable"... until the United States kicked his ass.
No, but the government that elected his party to power was, which, I believe, was the point of the argument you are failing to discredit.
It's been a testbed for liberalism for several years...
The political method you call liberalism has as little resemblance to actual Liberalim as the current Republican philosophy does to acual conservatism.
