Re:I've always wondered...
That's a big question! We currently believe that the circumstances that created life were pretty harsh in some respects and extremely mild in others.
No, wrong! Everyone knows Gil Gerard went back in time and ejaculated into the primordial ooze. Why do people make things so complicated?

Re:Google blackout
What are these sites like the one mentioned in TFS, and these alternatives you guys keep talking about? All I'm familiar with is the Uncyclopedia. Seems bona fide.
On the front page today:
Please note: As soon as we get around to setting something up,
the English Uncyclopedia will do... something. Possibly. If we remember.Today's Featured Article - Twilight (novel)
Words are hard. Math is hard. Life is hard. Having a boyfriend is hard — but important. Jacob's hands are hard, too. So are his teeth. But he's not the vampire; that's Edward. And you know what? Edward is hard — and cold — and a boyfriend; he is, along with Jacob, one of the stars of Twilight.
Twilight is a book about hardship and boyfriends and vampires, and it is also hard — to read, that is; the author, Stephanie Meyer, fills it with parentheticals and asides that sometimes get so far off track that it's hard to tell what the sentence, let alone paragraph, was even about, and sometimes, sometimes it gets to the point where the entire thing might as well be a nice, long, careening, self-contradictory minivan, because it's hard to tell where the entire thing is going when it's not going anywhere — which is hard, like Edward Cullen and Jacob... Jacob whatever his last name is; everyone just refers to him as Jacob (and he doesn't even appear much in this one anyway). In the news

Re:Really?
Until someone comes up with a religion that says it is OK to believe in "all the gods", your statement is nonsensical.
Unitarian Universalism, to which I'm a recent (agnostic) convert. One of the main tenets of the religion is that everybody can hold whatever beliefs they want. In my particular church, one of the ministers is Buddhist, one is Catholic, and one is agnostic. They have some very interesting sermons, usually focusing on some aspect of being a better person when interacting with society, rather than promoting devotion to any chosen deity. After the service, there's a coffee hour with socialization and open discussion, so the most sacred item in the church is the probably the coffeepot. Banjo help you if you take our coffee!

Re:Not exactly.
Sales and marketing does indeed have a "hard", finely-honed skillset - At self-deception. They need to convince themselves that their customer "needs" rockstar vibes, before they can convince the world of it.
Reading that, I can't help getting an image of Gil Gunderson. A sales guy who has spent his life convincing himself that shit is Shinola. Waking up each day, stiffening his spine, and going out there to do it one more time. Each day, the wall around his soul wearing a little thinner and his ability to ignore the truth getting a little more frayed. The lines in his forehead growing deeper as the shame becomes unbearable.
Maybe Willy Loman is a better icon on which to hang the image.

inventory managment
You may also find an inventory or asset management system useful to make sense of what you have, if its relevant in your circumstances. There is web based or software like http://www.ocsinventory-ng.org/ http://www.tracmor.com/ http://www.pukkapanel.com/ and others mentioned here.. http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/open-source-it-inventory-control-systems.html or if you use RT there is http://requesttracker.wikia.com/wiki/AssetTracker
There's also a previous
/. discussion on asset tracking stuff although perhaps a bit outdated now.. http://slashdot.org/story/06/08/20/0214256/it-asset-tracking-and-helpdesk-software -

Re:Learn photography.
I agree with getting a DSLR. I bought a canon powershot S5 IS a few years ago, but now I wish I had gotten a DSLR. It's a nice enough camera for my needs, but I don't want to buy any lenses for it that I won't be able to use if I get a DSLR in the future.
One cool thing about Canon cameras is CHDK I'm not sure if there's anything similar for other brands. I was disappointed that the S5-IS didn't have a bulb exposure setting, but you can enable it with CHDK. And it doesn't modify the firmware on the camera, it's just stored on the SD card. When you put in an unmodified SD card, the camera is back to normal. -

Re:Would love to see some naval battle
nobodies laughing, we just realize that once they fire on a carrier.. well... there's no "oops.. we didn't mean to do that, now listen to us..." to it. If America really wanted to, they could fight the war entirely airborne & remote. No occupation, naval or ground forces, necessary.
That's right. Don't fire on carriers. Limit yourself to attacking research ships and consular ships.

Re:Pesky space/time relavitity
Your time dilation assumes c towards Alpha Centauri, instant deceleration to 0, collect pdf and instant acceleration to c towards earth. Wont work.
Yes. THAT'S the problem with heading to Alpha Centauri. First of all, if we're imagining an interstellar ship capable of lightspeed travel, why not give it one of these? Second, fine--my starship accelerates at 1 gee (spaceship frame) for half the trip, then decelerates at 1 gee for the other half. To me, the trip takes two years each way. To my friends on Earth, I'm gone for about 10-20 years, if I remember this calculation correctly. Still I can get there and back in far less than fifty. The Vogons were *completely* reasonable.
As for the leopards in the basement cabinet... well.

Re:Still searching for "perfect" mp3 player (mplay
Here are a few good command-line tools for managing and playing your music:
dnuos, a list-generating script which you could use to create something like your catalog.txt file. It's pretty nice, and it can do things like read the metadata of the files if you want, as well as the file names.
morituri, a command line CD ripper with error correction support and metadata fetching
beets, a command line music manager which includes an MPD server and so can be interacted with using any number of command line MPD clientsI think beets + [some command line MPD client] would be best for you. I'm a happy Amarok user, but I've got a large collection that is partially hosted on a little Samba server that was for a long time headless, so I've played with command line management tools and I found beets and morituri to be very impressive. I hope one of those links is useful to you.

Music Player Daemon
Have you tried mpd? I use a GUI client (ario) and an Android client (mpdroid), and sometimes the basic terminal client (mpc), mpc; flatmates/visitors have used Windows/OSX/iPhone clients too. There's a curses client, but I've not used it: http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Clients
They don't have as many features as Amarok (which I use at work), but I wanted something that runs on the desktop, which I can control from my phone or laptop. (The desktop is plugged into the amplifier.)

Re:We need to mount an expedition
Oh, and you're confusing Star Trek with Total Recall or HHTGT; I don't remember ever seeing the triple breasted whore of erotica in Star Trek, but she was a Martian in Total Recall, but a Martian decended from humans who had three tits because she was a mutant.
The actor from Total Recall that you are thinking of is Lycia Naff, who really does have three breasts.
She was also in Star Trek 5, in the scene dancing on the bar when they first go down to the planet at the beginning.
This is a SFW(Clothed) picture of her in the star trek movie: http://images.wikia.com/memoryalpha/en/images/f/f1/Catwoman.jpg
Do a Google Image search on her name with safe-search off to see her in real life.

Re:Couldn't Resist...
Ahh, Kazakhstan, which used to be known as just Kazakh. It's the setting of a sci-fi story about a homosexual in blue spandex who is ejaculated from his starship, the Blue Dragon, on a mission to save the world from the evil mind control device The Witch's Titties.
But uh-oh, here Hiryu is on the streets. That fire-breathing fat fuck Karnov is trying to make trouble again. His asshole is every bit as puckery and fiery as his mouth.
In summa, Kazakh is a nation in turmoil and we must support their efforts. -

Re:Evaporation
This was a plot in, of all things, a Japanese anime - specifically, One Piece.
Despite the rain [that Dance Powder] creates however, the powder unfortunately caused long periods of drought to other countries. The process in which the artificial rain is created, nurtures clouds that aren't ready to rain yet. When this happens, all of the water contained within these clouds would all be used up. Because of this, other countries and locations, who would naturally benefit from rainfall when these clouds would naturally mature, are greatly deprived.
The controversy that this powder brought whenever it was used, started a war. The lives lost in this war was so great that the World Government outlawed the manufacturing and possession of Dance Powder world wide.

Re:OK can we agree this site sucks?
I have mixed feelings about this site.
After quickly looking around, I was able to identify plenty of books/shows/movies that are not mentioned at all. And those that are mentioned are given only quite brief articles. When you compare the coverage to what Wikipedia has, this new site looks rather small. When you also think about how much material there is in Memory Alpha, Wookiepedia, and all the other franchise-specific wikis, then this new site seems positively embarrassingly small.
However after reading a few articles, I think it does bring something new. In particular, the essays are not the factual NPOV articles that Wikipedia strives for. They are in fact highly opinionated about the quality and historic impact of various parts of SF. While I didn't agree with all the entries, they seemed mostly well-researched, and had lots of historical information and pointed out other works were given themes had also been explored.
My point is that this site gives us a different perspective. The essays and opinion pieces should be interesting to most anyone interested in SF. However I think calling it "The Encyclopedia of Sci-Fi" is a mistake. "Encyclopedia", in the modern Internet age, implies detailed coverage, in both breadth and depth; this site provides neither, from what I can see. Rather than advertising it as an authoritative factual cataloging of every SF work ever produced (which, again, is what "encyclopedia" means to most people nowadays, for better or worse), they should be emphasizing that they are providing an assortment of opinion pieces about the history of SF, written by selected experts.
