Semi-intelligent robots? Cars? Or turtles?
Our expensive computerized cars can only go some 20mph. Quite a few of us would have expected at least 60-150mph in the city to be possible by 2004.
Try calculating the average speed of your car travel. Go to some web mapping engine, put in home address and another, get miles and driving time, calculate miles/hr.
I see cars becoming semi-accursed, slow, expensive, wasteful, polluting, dangerous, and useless money black holes.
Perhaps becoming increasingly smaller - while we figure out some way to replace it.
We're becoming quite semi-intelligent, for not coming up with a less pathetic way to get around - MUCH quicker.
Eveyone driving a one-ton $10,000 90sqft unreliable obsolete closed-source no-protocol non-networked vehicle ain't never gonna do it.
Perhaps PRT, or pneumatic tubes , or electric bicycles.
Whatever, there's dozens of better options.

Lemme guess... you're wearing something along these lines.
am I right? :) -
Re:Duh
...release candidates of the latest browser are getting closer by the day.
Isn't that kind of how time works?
It may depend on who's time you're refering to. But yeah, I laughed at that too. -
AFDB to the rescue
This is why, in the modern age, we have the Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie.

You'll need a good firewall
MindGuard provides pyschotronic mind-control protection and runs on Linux. Try it, you'll see how well it works.

Sexually Transmissible DU? LOL.
For Vietnam war vets - Agent orange and all dibenzofuranes and their ilk have an affinity for DNA (especially after hitting the cytochrome P-450 enzyme chain - arene oxides) and are transmitted via sperm into the next generation. If these new vets are pissing DU it is also going into their sperm.
Am I the only one who's going to call bullshit on this little bit of hilarity?
Even for those ignorant enough to fall for "U238 dangerous radioactivity" hoax (and it is a hoax), what half-functioning brain could actually think that a toxin could be "transmitted via sperm into the next generation"!? Have fun explaining the mechanism for that one. I dare you to try. Do it in the name of pseudoscience! And remember, the burden of proof is on the person making extraordinary claims, not the one debunking them.
(Really -- tell your tall tales to your little sister, not to me.)
As for the rest about DU -- I will personally volunteer to have a 1kg block of DU placed underneath my bed for the next ten years, as long as it is wrapped in aluminum foil. (The latter just because I'm paranoid; what else is aluminum foil used for?
;-) And, oh yeah, as long as I won't be inhaling or ingesting any particles of uranium or its oxides -- not because of radioactivity, but because it is a heavy metal with chemical effects similar to (and not substantively worse than) lead poisoning. (I'm not afraid of lead, either; I just don't want to eat it.)This resulted in a spike of specific leukemias and kidney cancers in Basra (Southern Iraq) from 1996 on. I have 6 (5 us and one Mennonite Canadian) friends who saw that cancer ward from 1996 to 2002, and two in June 2003. All came back changed from viewing that pediatric oncology ward.
Yeah. Like Saddam's regime would never have grouped together childhood cancer cases and attributed them to U.S. munitions for the propaganda effect. No, that could never happen.
Really, your post gave me my laugh of the day. Pure anti-nuclear FUD, though very Politically Correct. Only on
/. could it have been modded up to +4, "Informative". -
This is better!
That doesn't work better than the Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie

Re:I know it's not tin foil, but....
For Linux users, MindGuard, free software that turns your computer into an effective mind control ray jammer!
MindGuard is a program for Amiga and Linux computers that protects your mind by actively jamming and/or scrambling psychotronic mind-control signals and removing harmful engrammic pollutants from your brain. It also has the ability to scan for and decipher into English specific signals so you can see exactly Who wants to control you and what They are trying to make you think.
MindGuard works by leveraging your computer's aluminum-based innards to both detect and emit psychotronic energy using advanced quasi-quantum techniques. Once a mind-control signal is identified and analyzed, MindGuard can generate a specially tuned anti-signal that will jam the incomming signal. If MindGuard is unable to properly identify the signal, it will generate psychotronic white noise to ensure the signal's harmful message is scrambled.

Re:I know it's not tin foil, but....Not nearly as effective or attractive as aluminum.
;-P
Aluminum is the perfect medium for constructing an AFDB
- Get a five foot sheet of aluminum foil (standard one foot wide Reynolds Wrap brand will do nicely.)
- Fold the sheet four times into five equal segments so that you end up with a 1x1 foot square, making sure that you fold over the dull side of the foil leaving the square shiny* on both sides.
- Use scissors to cut from one corner of the square to the center, making a straight line.
- Bend the foil from one side of the cut under the other, making a slight cone. Again, make sure that the outside of the cone has a shiny side of the foil; this is VERY important.
- Place the cone on your head and squash the top and sides to make it fit snugly.
- Apply Scotch tape liberally making sure to secure the cut in the foil and any form-fitting creases made in step 5.
- Use more tape to secure AFDB to your cranium.
*A Note About The Shiny Side:
It can't be stressed enough how important it is to have the shiny side pointing out. This is needed because the shiny side is most reflective to psychotronic radiation, while the dull side can actually, in certain environmental conditions, absorb it. However, as is illustrated in the instructions above, it is also wise to complement this with a layer of foil pointing shiny side in. This will keep your brain waves, which are also reflected by the shiny side, from being picked up by mind-reading equipment. There is a small number of aluminum foil researchers who believe that this may cause an alpha-wave harmonic to build up in the skull resulting in memory loss or pseudo-religious visions, but their findings have never been replicated by the aluminum foil research community at large. Even if their findings are validated, the risk involved is small compared to the potential of mind-intrusion.

My Question...
My Question is this: If I'm on Mars, will I have to wear a tinfoil hat to keep the people on Earth from reading my mind?
-
Re:War Passporting?
"I hope that these passports will come with some kind of jacket of material that can stop the radio transmissions or whatever..."
Easy, just get a tinfoil pocket-protector to go with the tinfoil beanie! -
Re:Are you being sarcastic?
Bring on metric time!!
-
Smart and Subtle
I love the Shielded cap. All the benefits of an aluminum foil beanie, without the strange looks.
-
Thwarting night-vision goggles? In addition to your regular equipment (eyeglass camera, Covert Wrist Watch Camera, or Covert Pager Camera and mini-DV recorder), don't forget your TEMPEST jacket and tinfoil hat (oops, I mean tinfoil hat)
;-).Hints for a better recording session:
1. Bring along a camera strobe/flash unit, attached to telescoping rod.
p.s. For those longer movies, you might always duct-tape a military-style infrared flare (somewhat like those bright plastic Glo-Sticks that are used at raves, but IR) against the projection booth window. That'd make it really bright--just for the booth! hee hee hee...;-)
2. Wait for the lights to go out, then sneak to the back of the theater.
3. Use strobe flash to temporarily blind night-gogglers in projection booth.
4. Swear loudly, then remember to close own eyes next time.
5. Gosub Step 3.
6. ???
7. Profit!Kids, don't try this at home. Void where prohibited. Professional driver on closed course. If you're caught, the secretary will disavow all knowledge of your actions. My thoughts are my own.

Re:Geek Fun
Well of course we'll inherit the earth...we'll all have our Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie on when the brain pickers come.

When this guy figures out that he can actually sell these, watch out now! -
Re:Space Beams
Do you know of any shops where I can get one of these wonderful sounding headpieces?
I did find this site useful for information, but seeing that you've posted with your real-login, I assume that you are a person of some repute who wouldn't be out to rip me off. -
Re:Confuse "Shared Source" vs. "Open Source"
"...Is this another ploy from Microsoft to not look like the bad guy, or do you think they are embracing on the Open Source movement?" Slashdot and SourceForge are both part of OSDN.
There is a third possibility, OSDN has sold out to one of their major advertisers. I just fear the day when OSDN or MS get control of the tinfoil beanie supply. We're all hosed then. -
Re:Another story on the power of TV...Don't need to remove my tinfoil hat...
Dude, are you stalking me for my past comments? (*GRIN*)
As to tinfoil hats, if you think it's ever safe to remove it, you obviously don't need it.

SasquatchIt just shows you don't know your cryptozoology. The simple fact is that Sasquatch are thriving in many areas and are politically active in Cascadia. If you have any questions, contact the Bureau of Sasquatch Affairs. On a related note, if you are a Cascadian Sasquatch and want to serve your country, note that the Sasquatch Militia is recruiting.
Of course, you may have been refering to the Canadian Sasquatch instead of the Cascadian Sasquatch. If so, please accept my apologies, as we all know they can indeed carry coconuts through the air.

AFDBDude, you simply need a better Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie.
The above link has folding instructions and fashion advice. Just make sure your browser has cookies enabled. No real reason. Honest. Just, well, it'll enhace your AFDB experience.
Trust me on this.

Re:Come on CA
We should be grateful they came across that website and didn't come across the Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie web site. They would have made Beanie hats mandatory for all state residents.

Sasquatch Militia
Just don't tell the Sasquatch Militia!! If you do, they'll kick the fur out of you next time you visit Cascadia.

Re:It'll be denatured
With, supposedly, some prohibition-era laws still on the books (reportedly allowing confiscation of huge ranges of property that are even somewhat connected to "bootlegging" [e.g. 'moonshine'] and huge taxes for non-denatured ethanol, it suddenly occurs to me that there's something perverse about the government subsidizing poisoned varieties of ethanol while making citizens pay through the nose for non-(comparatively)-poisonous ethanol...
That does it, I'm takin' this Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie off again. Every time I put it on I start thinking unhappy thoughts...

Looks like...
It's just a water-cooled tinfoil hat.

Re:Why Google?
Take the tinfoil hat off. Look who published the article. The Washington Post.

Where's Osama (Off-Topic)...Since September 11, US security agencies have increasingly turned to technology to help them process website postings, internet chat and e-mail traffic....and still no sign of Osama Bin Laden.
For some strange reason, whenever I put on my Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie I find myself wondering if they don't already KNOW where Osama is but they're putting off going in to 'get' him until the most politically advantageous time. Say, a couple of months before the US Presidential election?...

Re:You're mighty black too Mr. Pot.
Hey friend- I saw a commercial from Smart & Final having a sale on these. You might want to pick one up.
Whether or not you agree with me is irrelivant.
Perhaps, but since I appear to have a little bit better understanding of what fascism is, methinks you need some remediation with some basic history courses. -
The Illusion of Time... Martian Time Slip...
Read the Red/Blue/Green Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. He had a fun idea of throwing out the extra 39 minutes in day-to-day life. Or more succinctly, the first second of observed-time in the day lasted 39 minutes. Effectively giving them a "zero hour". He never goes on to explain the scientific/technical ramifications of this, but the idea was interesting in that instead of doing day-fitting of the time, they just ignored it.
For that matter, why not create a more decimal/metric friendly time all together? That's been worked on too... check this out: http://zapatopi.net/metrictime.html
All and all, as we move away from Earth to other heavenly bodies (including artificial ones) we're going to be faced with the awkward test of determining what time it is where ever we may be. Relativity be d@mned...
Opinions... ideas... further knowledge? let 'er rip...
what time is it?

Untrue. I shall not belabor the reasons as to why. This sort of thing is abundantly self-evident to those who closely examine matters such as this.

MindGuard is fully configurable and can be customized for the individual user using biorhythmic and eponymologic settings. MindGuard also includes an advanced DePsych utility, allowing the removal of almost all deep-burned memetic patterns -- including even commercial jingles.
With MindGuard, you can rest assured that your most valuable possession -- your mind -- is safe from the nefarious tinkering of evil-doers. -

I too disconnected my OnStar system. I liked the warm and secure feeling I got from it, but it's signal kept sparking off of my AFBD.

Re:Do they sell tin-foil hats at Thinkgeek?Unfortunatly, thinkgeek doesn't sell tinfoil hats. However I was able to find instructions on how to make one yourself.
Instructions are here.
BEWARE OF COMMERCIAL AFDBS: Since you should trust no one, always construct your AFDB yourself to avoid the risk of subversion and mental enslavement. Sometimes, AFDBs will be sold on places like eBay. Do not purchase these pre-made AFDBs, even if the seller seems trustworthy. They may contain backdoors, pinholes, integrated psychotronic circuitry or other methods that actually promote mind control.

Re:Trust?
Anyone know where I can buy a tinfoil hat?
How about making your own: AFDB

Microsoft Behind SCO Cash Investment?
I was about halfway through the article, reached the paragraph that read, "But people in the open-source community are far from convinced. They cite the myriad of investment holding and other companies that firms like Microsoft can hide behind when making investments", and I realized I wasn't wearing my AFDB (aka "foil hat" by the masses).
I donned my AFDB and finished the article but now I'm worried. I've seen movies like "Antitrust" and "The Falcon and the Snowman" (the prequel to "The Cathedral and the Bazaar") so I know what this big companies can do. I want to post some information I've recently discovered before something...uh oh...what's that? Let me check...

CIA Mind Control Lasers!
When I was at Berkeley, a few friends of mine worked off-campus at the Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Astrophysics. This was connected to the campus network via a microwave relay mounted on the roofs of two buildings.
The story I was told by one of the sysadmins was that one day, the thing just stopped working, with no technical explanation. After doing all manner of tracing and debugging, they finally went to go check the campus-side transceiver, and found it turned 180 degrees in the other direction, with a note saying something to the extent of I know what you're doing, this is a CIA mind control device, if you try to keep reading my thoughts and fix this, I will find and kill you.
They fixed it and put a nice laminated piece of paper on it, explaining that, no, it's not part of the Orbital Mind Control Lasers, but rather an innocuous network component used for space research, and please don't mess it up, you could fall off the roof and hurt yourself
It never happened again; I guess they could have just ordered a few aluminum foil deflector beanies for the general public.
