Re:Apples to Oranges
True. For that matter, take ONE single game - Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. As of now, the player count is past the 500 million mark and that is for ONE free game.

Re:Americas army...
I still run my Honor, Linux server on 2.5 for obvious reasons.
Full every day.
See HERE for full list of honor servers. -
Re:I can't justify that sort of monthly expense
The game you mentioned looks quite interesting, but the link was wrong.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
In Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, The Field Ops class (ammo guy) on the Allies side is black. Though oddly there are no black soldiers on the Axis side.

Re:-1, offtopic
I don't know what you're talking about when you say ET is not free... From the Official Web Page (sorry, it is Flash-based), to the FAQ at the previously mentioned 4players site; It's free to download and play. Modding of the game is encouraged, and there are several mods, maps and skins for it. Getting ahold of the code for the game is possible, for the purposes of making mods.
However, since it uses the Quake 3 engine, it may not be as free as you'd like it to be. (I'm not sure whether the source code for that is out there and available now - but given iD's past releases of the Quake and Quake 2 engines, it will be soon). Feel free to pick some nits about the definition of the word "free".
Thanks for pointing out the other games as well though, the more the merrier. -
Two Words:
Enemy Territory.
Okay, some further explanation might be in order - it's an FPS that was released free to the public. It can be used/modified by anyone who is interested because it is - Open Source. And play a game or two (if your office can handle your l33t pwn4g3 sk1llz!) before steering the conversation in to the other good things about Open Source. -

Re:How modified?
I know this is a modified quake 1 engine, but still...those hardware requirements seem awful steep for this. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is based on the Quake III engine and requires a 600 mhz cpu, and it looks better than this game. I'm all for GPL'd first person shooters, but it looks like something went awry in the code for requirements to be that high. It's not Doom 3 territory, but considering that Linux runs on many older machines, you'd think they'd keep that in mind during the development process.

Re:Where's CoopHave you tried Enemy Territory? It's a free online multiplayer game, and the best part, IMO is that it's objective based (with some great stock maps to boot). A variety of different classes allow you to play to your strengths, particularly if you're not up for a fragfest.
Granted, your mileage may vary with how many noobs and assholes you're willing to deal with, but there are some good servers and some great players out there.
I've been playing it for almost two years solid and I'm still not bored. I'm also more than willing to help out newcomers to the game, so if you need/want some guidance, feel free to ask me.

Enemy TerritoryIn happier (and non-fooling) news, Enemy Territory, my favorite free online game, just released a Mac version, which you can find here.
Anybody wishing help playing the game or finding decent servers to play on are more than welcome to contact me. My friends and I love this game and are always willing to help new blood.

Re:does FOS make users dumb as well?
Makes kids dumb? My seven-year old daughter learned how to build caves & buildings in the Morrowind construction kit by trial and error, and is now adding AI characters and messing about with the scripts for them. She's well versed in many cheat codes, and uses a whole bunch of console commands to dynamically load and move objects around while in the game. (And no, I didn't show her any of this. I printed a list of console commands from a web site - something like about 7 pages of them - and left her to it. I must admit, I was curious to see how she would interpret instructions like this: The formula is (Player->SetStat, xxx) were xxx is the number you want to power up too: example: ~ to bring up console; then (Player->SetStrength, 100) then press enter. You now have 100 str. These are the stats you can set: Strength, Intelligence, [...] and about another 100+)
Now, perhaps playing mario on a GBA for days on end could stunt your intellect, but the kind of stuff she's been figuring out in Morrowind for the past few months must surely be in a different league. Put it this way, eventually her school may get around to discussing programming (right now they're at the 'this is the back button in your web browser' stage) and when they do she'll probably put 1 and 1 together and get 10.
Cheers

Already been done?
Sounds like something that has already been done (in the private sector), only using a collection of PCs, not huge government computers. Link

Re:We're supposed to worry -- why?
bah! I just got done playing some Doom 3. And Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory before that. And Neverwinter Nights before that. And others in between, I'm sure, that I've forgotten. Want a free game for linux that will throw you into months or years of addiction, try WolfET. DL both game and 1.02 Patch. Multiplayer only.

Enemy Territory
has a Springfield Map

Re:MMORPG?
There is a great Simpsons map for Wolfenstein ET. It's not as complete or as detailed as the map here, but it's still pretty cool to be running around through the Simpson house, armed to the teeth!

Hmm...
Ah, yes, old content dense games. I, perhaps would not kill, but am partial to commiting lesser atrocities for getting my hands on the MMO version of old gems like Star Control (2 of course). Which is much older, but also quite content dense single player game. One of the best games of all time ever made too.
:) Hopefully the Ur-Quan Masters project will take that direction somewhere after the 1.0 release. It could grow into something as fabulous as this MMO remake of the Pirates! While there is in currently made games, and games of old that can be improved in terms of appeal for both casual and hard core gamers, there are also a lot of good ideas, that can be taken from them. -
Re:You know...
What if those missions involved suicide bombings?
Hell, I can't count how many times I have boldly run into the Gold Room in RtCW:ET and blown myself to bits with a panzer, all in an attempt at furthering the Allied cause. :-)Does that count as a suicide bombing?

Re:Free software: The alternative to piracy
If Tux Racer and StepMania have proven themselves worth of being converted to commercial arcade games, doesn't that redeem them a bit? (Pun semi-intended, as arcade Tux Racer spits tickets.)
On what basis do you call NetHack with one of the new GUIs "lame crap"? I bet several dozen geeks are ready to descend upon thee.
And don't forget about proprietary games available to NVIDIA video card owners at no cost beyond bandwidth, such as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

Everyone is better than you for a reason.Online FPS gaming is very different from its offline counterpart. The optimum strategies are often counter-intuitive, your enemy actually thinks, and you are forced to rely on other people in order to stay alive.
Most people playing online have been doing so for months if not years. They've developed the reflexes, knowledge of game systems and maps, and tactical know-how to stay alive. Unfortunately, the only way to gain these skills is practise.
I suggest you download Wolfenstein: ET. First of all, it's free so if you decide online gaming isn't for you after all, you haven't lost anything but a little time.
Secondly, the penalties for death aren't too harsh. Unlike Counter-Strike, where you have to wait up to 5 minutes after dying to play again, you'll be back in the game within 30 seconds.
Thirdly, it's "easy-to-learn, hard-to-master", to use the cliche. You don't have to learn complex firing patterns or master the intricacies of every weapon in order to play competently. You can introduce more complicated elements and strategies at your own pace without being left behind.
Finally, during your 30 seconds of waiting to respawn, you have the option to view one of your team mates through their eyes. Watch what they do. Think about what they do wrong and what you'd do differently. See if they charge too easily or hesitate too much. Don't treat online gaming like linear, formulaic single player games. Always think and try to learn from your mistakes.

Wolf: ET
Wolfenstein Enemy territory would be an ideal game.. It should run with no difficulties on your machines and it is also free..
A quick google search turned up this URL, for example, to download from..

Tibia
You might wish to try Tibia. It's a free MMORPG, with some extra features if you wish to pay. If you pay, you can create guilds and get your own house for example. Otherwise, you can only join guilds, and be allowed entrance on paying members houses. The game is looking something like this. Lots of creatures available for all difficulties too. They should keep you busy. The server also has quests you can take, and there are a number of separate "realms" for you to play on.

Re:Bungie
For FragFest Fun, you probably won't do better than Unreal. Try getting new maps and mods to change up the fun; or try team combat
I agree. Both StrikeForce and Tactical Ops are available in PC and Mac flavors for UT. They have both been favorably compared to Counterstrike if that's your bag.Tactical Ops: SWAT v Terrorists, realistic guns, damage, etc.
Strike-Force: all of the above, plus "pulse", a neat feature that takes into account how much gear you are rucking and what you've done recently--keeps folks from hopping constantly--pulse lowers their accuracy and makes them breathe noticeably, exposing position. Windows users click here.

Mac Gamers Get This...AAO Tracker
ArmyOps Tracker
You can track you all sorts of stats with the game. I love using it to track how many points I need to gain honor and seeing my frag rate. I didnt discover this online tool for almost a few months. If you are curious, you can see mine...My AA stats. Another cool feature is the signature file which is like a banner ad of your stats.
I can wait til I turn my 600mhz iBook into a server! -

Pirate games! This is awesome! Will take a while for it to come out, though.
Meanwhile, you might be interested in this game, World of Pirates. It's an MMORPG set in, er, a Pirate universe. That doesn't sound right, but it's cool. Anyway, it's in beta at the moment, and you can sign up for it at their site.
Another good pirate game is Puzzle Pirates, where you do puzzles for piratey stuff. Pretty cool. In open beta.
Really looking forward to this Pirates! remake, though. It'll kick all those games' asses.

For those with slightly older machines...Or laptops, or God Forbid, Macintoshes: there's a couple of great mods to the 436 Build of Unreal Tournament (Game of the Year Edition) that are worth getting.

Actually finding the download for Strike-Force for Mac was really hard--it took me a couple of days and a load of German. Tactical Ops has been called "better than CounterStrike", but I'm not sure I agree. The UT engine has trouble with ladders--you fall off of them a LOT.
