Re:Question... kinda.... star trek reference...
Plaid Hippopatamus Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Rotund-mammals.
I'm not sure, but google thinks Hippopatamus is spelled Hippopotamus. HTH.
I was half-tempted to enter your definition for PHASER into Acronym Finder's database. Just a mouse-click away in fact.
I wonder how long it will be until the police are bombarding protestors with billions and billions of plaid Hippopotami. At least we wouldn't have to worry about alien invasions anymore. They would steer clear of our planet after our development of Hippopotamus technology. -

Re:Can someone explain?
The problem is that we're running out of TLA's. Almost every TLA has two, three or even more meanings. The solution to this problem is obvious, use more lettters. FLA's, FLA's, or even SLA's give us much more potential for uniqueness than TLA's do. Unfortunatly this gets more and more complex. SLA's are so complex that no-one can remember what they stand for, or even which order the letters should go in. For example the most famous SLA is probably PCMCIA, and even that's not unique. In order to ensure perfect uniqueness I propose that we should junk all the existing acronyms, and go to FSLA.

Fuck Off
Why do you waste your time reading at -1?
Is it just to whine about trolls like us and try to make your little fag group look righteous by fighting the trolls?
You sir, bore me to tears.
also, what part of THBT don't you understand?
Just in case you were too lazy to look it up on Acronym Finder it means "You Have Been Trolled" which is basically like saying to the parent "you are a fucking moron for replying to a troll"
Just as you have been.
YHBT, you stupid fuck. -
You say that it's a bad thing
I thought the whole point of OSS was for people to build upon the work of others for the betterment of the community. If a company wants brownie points for marketing this neato stuff to the rest of the world, more power to them, provided they give back to the community (which, as Nvu is MPL, it looks like they will?).
But, I mean, would it hurt them to call it something like "Web page designer program," or some other *descriptive* name? What the hell is a "Nvu?" Oh, wait. Never mind. Though I guess "Dreamweaver" doesn't describe exactly what the product does, it's at least catchy and it's easy enough to guess that it's some kind of artsy-fartsy thing.
Ah well, I've been eating halloween candy for the last hour or so, excuse me if I'm not exactly lucid. -
Re:Pronounciation?I wonder where they got the name anyway. Does it stand for something? (other than a kickass linux distro of course)

Re:Commercializing the root servers is wrong
How long does it take you people to get this into your heads: INTERNET != USA !
Just look how many letters these words share with 'international'
- internet: 6 (in fact all letters if you double-count 'e' and 't')
- usa: 1
Ok, ok, so internet means inter-network network but I guess the message is clear: we own the internet together, all of us. Yes, even the guy with the archaic 9600bps modem owns a piece of it: all of say 3 feet of telephone cable, a modem and some rusty old box, as long as that box is a functioning network node...
To say that some country owns the Internet because it has some BFG's (entry #8) is to totally ignore the time and effort that thousands of people from hundreds of countries, like scientists, Ham radio operators, BBS sysops, tech companies and whoever else, put in to make the 'net what it is today.
To summarize:
$ cat parent_post | grep -e "s/Score: 1/Score: -inf: Troll/" # Note to self: Stop feeding them... -
PHB's
For those wondering what a PHB is (e.g. me)
http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?p=dict&S tring=exact&Acronym=PHB, http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=phb -
Re:What's a PHB?
Well, according to AcronymFinder.com, we have a choice of the following...
Bachelor of Philosophy
Packet Handling Buffer
PCI Host Bridge
Per Hop Behavior
Player's Handbook (gaming)
Pointy Haired Boss (Dilbert)
Poly 2-Hydroxybutyrate
Psycho Hose Beast
I think I'm gonna go with that last one in this case. -
Re:More nitpickingMAC: The acronymfinder returns 111 meanings for MAC
the first one listed is Apple Macintosh computer, which is odd as it is the wrong way round.
Also, Magnetic Accelerator Cannon (Babylon 6), which is also strange shouldn't that be Babylon 5?!

The mighty Acronym Finder can be of help to you for all your TLA enquiries. NLP apparently stands for Natural Language Processing, amongst other things (including Name Lookup Protocol, National Landcare Program and the airport code for Nelspruit, South Africa).

Re:What's a PVR?I saw this done recently, and was able to do it in a
/. post after View/Source-ing the post that did it. Let's see if I can find it...Yep, there it is. It uses the same 'title="xxx"' format, but just inside a "A HREF" link. So, for instance, the acronym could link to the acronym site and also have the popup explaining it, to view quicker. (I also like boldfacing my links, it helps them stand out better.)
"It apparently has PVR capabilities as well as
..."Well, in testing all I'm getting for the "title" is "acronymfinder.com" so I guess
/. strips it and puts their own title in. So it doesn't work as I had thought; please let the /. coders know that we'd like this feature. At any rate, code for the above is:"It apparently has <b><a href="http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?S
t ring=exact&Acronym=pvr&Find=Find" title="Personal Video Recorder">PVR</a></b> capabilities as well as ..." -

Re:No Macs
SKUs are generally inventory numbers or stock keeping units. By asking users to watch their webpage for "additional SKUs", they are basically asking the users of other OSes (ala Macs) to hold their breath until they decide to release to something other than Windows.
What I want to know is what is so different about this latest version of Myst where they couldn't have completed a Mac version to begin with. They had 2 versions of Myst under their belt, already, so it's not like they haven't had experience developing for the Mac.
I can understand if they gave an explicit reason as to why a Mac version wasn't created, but saying "watch this space", is kind of a cop-out. Generally, and at least in this industry, when you say "watch this space", what it really means is "yeah, keep looking. We might do another version, but we want to keep the hype machine going at your expense"
In all fairness, I'll have to take a look at the trailer and see what the new game looks like, but the preponderance of the "games only sell on Windows" attitude, I'm wondering if game studios are willing to live with the fact that they are making this a self-fulfilling prophesy and if any of them are ever interested in trying to get out from under Microsoft's shadow. -
Re:Gaim?
Take ATM, for example: Adobe Type Manager, Automatic Teller Machine, and I'm sure there's a few hundred more.
Really? Acronym Finder can find only seventy. If you can think of more, they accept submissions.
For comparison, it has 130 meanings for MS, and Microsoft is number 5. -

Re:What's kph?kph would imply karots per hour, referring to the purity of gold.
Possibly if it were Kph, we'd be taking about Kalvin per hour, which must be a rate of temperature change?
Or maybe we're talking about Potassiums per hour?
Surely not kilometres per hour, since the abbreviation for kilometre is km, and following the metric guidelines (which are simlar to those of Physics and Chemistry), would yeild km/h which describes you are referring to the distance travelled during a specific time unit, in this case hours.
How would you write kilometres per day? kpd? I don't think we're referring to the Kivalliq Partners in Development. Let's try km/day.

Clear redundant clarity
Consider "ATM machine" as opposed to "ATM data link" as opposed to "at the moment" abbreviated as opposed to "Adobe Type Manager" as opposed to everything else you find on. The pedantically redundant phrase "ATM machine" adds clarity.

Help reverse-engineer the protocol!
Opensource implementations will probably need to play catch-up to maintain interoperability. You can help too!
On this page there is centralised effort in reverse-engineering and documenting the protocol: http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~uck4/ICQ/. Get your packet sniffer running!
This SourceForge project is a library that implements the protocol, however, its development has stalled: http://libicq2000.sourceforge.net. It could really use implementation of new features, like support for per-message encoding TLV (Type-Length-Value).

Re:when was the last time you hosed off your ibook
Even that site has errors.
It decides to apply english to computer terms. That's a big mistake.
A list of his errors:
CD-ROM. A CD-ROM is a DRIVE, not a DISC. A CD is a disc, or, if one wants to use the long form, a CD-ROM disc is a disc that fits in a CD-ROM. This is extremely common usage by those in the know, therefore the author is de-facto wrong.
UFO. While I'm not a Raelian, I'm very sure the common usage of the word UFO by such people is to mean anything that is unidentifiable as human.
OK. Flat out stupid griping by a person who has nothing to gripe about. OK is a valid acronym, spelt without periods. Don't like it? TS. Yeah, that's an acronym too. Look it up and be amazed! Oh, and on the internet we rarely put periods in acronyms. Common usage and all that again...
Drive. Please gripe more! Not! What the hell is this all about? Common usage by Billions and Billions (served) is Hard Disk. Don't like it? TS again!
Lite. Hey asshole, I'm a humanist and I spell it analog. Nice job putting words in people's mouths and ignoring how 300 million people spell things. Also good job ignoring entire dictionaries worth of information telling you you're wrong. I'll say it again: Asshole.
How can I trust a site that doesn't accept the common usage of words in their respective fields? Stop treading on people's toes, lest you be trodden on, pretentious grammarian. -
DECT
If you really want cellular phone then a DECT network will be lot cheaper to setup. Of course, if you want to call somebody outside your cell (you didn't say that) then you still need a trunk line coming in. Cable, radio or satellite are the obvious choices.

Re:Master of Orion???
A search for MOO in the almighty Acronym Finder gives the following result:
Master of Orion, 2nd place
MUD Object Oriented, 8th/last place
Trust me, if you see "MOO" somewhere on the internet where the discussion isn't about cows, it's about Master of Orion. -

I was confused by that, also.
According to acronymfinder, it means

I could be wrong, though -- it could have meant "Republic of Singapore Navy." -

Re:You forgot something
To the moderator that moderated this as "troll," I have meta-moderated you unfair. This decreases the chance that you will be allowed to moderate in the future. This was obviously an attempt at humor. Even if you don't find it funny, the SOP in cases such as "..profit!" and the soviet russia remarks is to mark said post Redundant.
Please take time to know how slashdot works before you moderate in the future. The moderator guidelines probably won't kill you.

Re:comment to any search engine guys
I dont believe that was the original commentor's point (even though I dont know what PHB meant). Yes, there is a solution if you dont want to be indexed, but if all the linking policies were followed by search engines, the thought is that no one would be able to find the web site. This would really force the company to find out how stupid their policy really is.
