Not a mouse, but it did have its own keyboard.

Re:There is only one true keyboard...
I am typing from a Microsoft Internet Keyboard [1] [2] and it's very good. A bit loud but that's ok. I has just membrane but it has a nice feeling on pressing keys. I was a bit disapointed when I took it apart to clean it. There wasn't a big membrane but small button membranes on the "film" (that transparent thing). But it's an ok device for it's money (around 15 bucks). It has lasted long enough and I think it's going to be with me for a lot more
I though that Logitec makes Microsoft's keyboards.

Re:Finally
Prove it!
98 was always meant for home use, and 2000 was always meant of work/business use.
There was certainly no trying to get everyone to install what was absolutely a work OS at home.
Hell, there were hardly even any PCs at the consumer level that even came with 2000!
This is just a wrong argument.
I can site links, can you??

Re:um, what?
What about the Dual Strike? That control setup is identical to using a wii-mote with the nunchuck, except the the two sides are connected via a ball-in-socket joint.

Re:Question for osx experts..
From a Mac more than Windows user perspective - A lot of the time "full screening" of a Windows app is so you can have the window (which contains both the document menu and the palletes) large enough to sufficiently work. On the Mac most of the pallettes and windows are unbundled from a parent the the menu which is shared amongst the open document window(s) is on the top of the screen, making it much easier to work in a full screen environment without needing to fullscreen an app window.
As an example, I found this screenshot from MS Office 2004 which is a Mac bassed app - you can see that the application menu toolbars are not bound inside any sort of application window. So technically all Mac apps run at "full screen."

Re:Gamma
I know it isn't the point, but take a look at the keyboard in these pictures:
http://www.activewin.com/screenshots/officexpkeybo ard/images/officekeyboard.JPG
http://home.uchicago.edu/~iyjung/bigpictures/48.jp g
That is the way MS is pushing for layouts. Do you notice that the Insert key isn't there? It's now a control key off of some other random key. Which key that is will change between just about every keyboard model.
Sure, we can keep the Caps Lock key in the wrong place, hell, even on dedicated key at all, but we get rid of the Insert key. Go figure. -
Re:Great, where do we sign up...
Yet you seem determined to put me, the only FOSS-friendly voice in an entire school district, off by calling me an idiot.
Don't worry, stick with Windows, because Windows users never call anyone idiots (just check the comments to see!). -
Re:The problem
First off, Original XP Requirements Guess what? They aren't any different.
Slipstreaming being illegal is utterly absurd, there is nothing in the EULA that says you can't copy the install media since the install media isn't copyrighted. The software on the install media is copyrighted. This is why I have remote installation services with all my software to push new machines on the network faster. Microsoft even provides instructions for this and says no where that it is not legal so regardless of copyright MS has relinquished the right to stop the copying of the cd. This also ignores the fact that there is no copy protection on the Windows install media. Furthermore, I don't buy Windows CDs I buy Windows licenses that don't come with media and I don't sell modified installation discs so the whole thing is moot.
More fud debunked The system, requirements aren't any different. The 1.5gig space requirement only applies if system restore is enabled which would be the same thing for SP1.
As for the web spider bullshit the few people that do it have the option of modifying their systems. It is not typical usage of Windows so faulting Microsoft for locking down their OS is just utterly stupid. Security is traditionally the art of breaking services. The OS is far less exposed to worms and other malicious software and as a result you have to do some more work. I'd agree with you that if XP Home SP1 had IIS and SP2 deleted it then you would have a valid claim to be pissed. That is not the case and you have failed to state how SP2 removes functionality. In reality it is quite the opposite.

Re:So...Hmmm....are you running Vista already?
According to what I've read here http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=26, that's not necessarily going to be the case. Even if http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?Headlin eIndex=36404&Group=1 is more accurate, one of the commentors still had some reasonable concerns about the new plan:As I work for a company that deals with Volume licensing exclusively, as #1 said, this is not going to go over well. I can see it now, you purchase the license, have to go here, have to activate it here, then install and activate it. But the vendor hasn't updated MS yet, so it doesn't show your agreement, then the install reports your install isn't legit and knocks you out.. GREAT.. Nice especially if you have to reinstall to get a critical server back up, etc.
I stand by my original assertion: Microsoft is shooting itself in the foot in its attempt to curtail piracy, and will only annoy its legitimate users--not, generally speaking, a good business tactic. -
Re:Games that made you use your imagination
Do you know what my first thoughts were when I saw Monkey Island for the first time ever back then in 1990? Can't remember my exact thoughts, but it was something along the line of "This are the best damn graphics I have ever seen in a game", "Maniac Mansion" earlier on the C64 triggered similar feelings. Adventure games simply were one of the best looking games around that time, all those Jump'n Runs and other tile based games just looked flat in comparism to the '3d' scenary you got in an adventure game. Now I am not saying that the technical aspects of graphics are overly important, but graphics itself, ie. the art behind them certainly is. MonkeyIsland1 vs MonkeyIsland4 kind of demonstrates that in a drastic way:
http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/scd/a/monkey-25.gif
http://bonusweb.idnes.cz/obrazek/na_mi05.jpg
vs
http://www.activewin.com/reviews/software/games/m/ images/mi4_019.jpg
MonkeyIsland1 might suffer a bit from limited resolution and color palette, but boy, the art in there is just lightyears ahead of that shit that they put into MonkeyIsland4. So what does that mean? Not much probally, but it shows that advances in rendering don't necessarily lead to a better looking a game.
Now that brings us back to the Wii, on one side I don't see its limited abilities as much of a problem, especially since we don't know how limited it really will be (will there be HDR and Shaders support?). However its limits won't be a problem only as long as the developers make good use of what they have at hand. If they just try to develop the same style as they do for PS3 the Wii will probally end up with a bunch of ugly and jerky games, just look at 'Burnout' or 'NfS:Most Wanted' for the NintendoDS to see how wrong games can get if they are rushed and don't make proper use of the hardware.
In the end I think you are right, even with shiny high-end graphics, most of the 'world' in a game exists still mainly in our head and not just on the screen. What is shown on the screen however can and has to support the imagination and not work against it to make the game as a whole work. 'Photorealistic graphics' when done wrong can easily fall into the uncanny valley and spoil all imagination, while cartony graphics on the other side are reasonably save for most part. Now I don't want all games to look chartony, but developers have certainly to be carefull to create an overall pleasant looking game and pure CPU/GPU power alone won't help to compansate lack in arstitic skill. And as such lack of CPU/GPU power won't stop people from creating great looking games either, the days of 4 color CGA where lack of graphic ability might have hindered good looking games are long gone and no matter how much power the Wii has, it will certainly be more then enough to bringt some good graphics onto a TV screen. -
Re:O to be Nintendo at this moment
Where was the roar of the crowd when super-popular games like MSG and FF came on the screen?
If you were watching a web feed (like from gamespot), they cut to direct-feed video for MGS and FF which would explain why there was no crowd roar (not saying there was any crowd roar, but
...).O to be Nintendo at this moment.
Or even Microsoft. Nothing shown by Sony trumps the 360 so far, and that controller is very reminiscent of something I assume Microsoft has already patented. Since Nintendo has suggested they're trying to carve out their own niche with the Wii, where a "hardcore" gamer would likely buy the Wii and another console, Microsoft looks set to win this time around. Nintendo will "win" by playing a completely different game, and good for them.
I already have a 360, and I'm currently planning on buying a Wii (on the fence leaning towards "buy", but we'll see what Nintendo's press conference has in store tomorrow). I'll probably buy a PS3 at some point in the future, but at this rate that won't be for some years from now. Little innovation (copying Microsoft's Xbox Live and Nintendo's Wii-mote) coupled with a yawn-inducing game line-up and an astronomical price has put me off of even considering a PS3 for now.

Microsoft patented tabbing between hyperlinks
which it clearly didn't "invent."
"Microsoft patents Tab button use
Time: 14:26 EST/19:26 GMT | News Source: Geek.com | Posted By: Robert Stein
A patent for which Microsoft applied on March 6, 1997, has been granted: "Discoverability and navigation of hyperlinks via tabs." In other words, when a computer user uses the Tab key to move the focus from one hyperlink to another on a webpage opened in a browser, the use of that function is now owned by Microsoft. The Tab patent, number 6,785,865, was granted on August 31st, just one among multiple patents granted to the software giant on that day. Another interesting grant is number 6,784,354, with an application date of March 13, 2003: "Generating a music snippet." Yes, you read that right. Now dividing a music stream into portions is Microsoft's domain."
http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?ThreadI ndex=29479&Group=2
Or how about this:
"Microsoft and invention
We've been inspired by the comment that Microsoft's anti-spyware software is "the best product they've ever invented". Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't invent their anti-spyware product. They bought it. Just like most of their best products. And those they didn't buy, they copied. Well, possibly not all of them. But when we put our mind to it, we couldn't think of any of their "best products" that hadn't been either bought or copied.
There have to be some, surely. Put your thinking caps on. What has Microsoft actually invented?"
http://www.bleedingedge.com.au/blog/archives/2005/ 08/microsoft_and_i.html
And this about some patent piracy with Micro$oft claiming to own something it didn't:
"Microsoft Was Found To Be A Patent Pirate
"The user experience is far from ideal but Microsoft has no choice as a result of the defeat it was handed in a patent infringement suit that was filed against the company by Eolas."
Is the above statement true? Microsoft does have a choice. They could have licensed the technology years ago but chose to steal instead. Now they have an inferior product.
Last week Microsoft and Research in Motion (RIM) were whining at a hearing they had bought with money they made on others inventions to members of congress about patent trolls. A patent troll is someone who owns rights to an invention and kicks the crap out of patent pirates who dare to steal.
Microsoft is infamous for having a huge appetite for other's technological property. Eolas is a good example of this. Mike Doyle produced a real invention and has been subjected to years abuse at the hands of a patent pirate.
Microsoft whines about forty or so pending litigations. Most of those inventor's cases probably have considerable merit and that is why Microsoft and other patent pirates are desperate to reform (or is it deform) the patent system into one where they can avoid the consequences of pirating others inventions.
Society functions because of the rule of law. Microsoft has been found to be a patent pirate and in the process they were caught committing fraud on the court. In fact RIM was also caught committing fraud. Gateway was caught destroying evidence. There is an epidemic of technology companies lying, cheating, and stealing others property. They abuse the process of law to bankrupt and brutalize inventors and compound the sin with public relations campaigns which try to paint their victims as the bad players."

That's more than 14 months before Beta 1 (Build 5112, 7/2/2005). Heck, that screenshot was taken months before the infamous Longhorn development "reset".Wikipedia has an article titled "Development of Windows Vista" that summarizes and gives a timeline of the Longhorn/Vista builds from 2002-present.
A much better source for current Vista beta screenshots is Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows Build 5342 (3/24/06) Screenshot Gallery.
I'd like to think the GP made an honest mistake when he linked to 2-year-old Longhorn pre-beta screenshots to illustrate how lousy Vista is supposedly going to look. It looks suspiciously like he might be trolling, though.

That screenshot looks plain awful :-) What build of Vista was that?? :-S
Here's a current (February) build anyway:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/37/Wind ows_Vista_Aero.png
However, I still don't see the usefulness of it. Microsoft keep talking about usability improvements... Why, because you see a blurred view of the window behind your active one? Because you work more efficiently if gratified with fancy zoom in/out animations? -
And this is bad why?
Have you seen screenshots of Aero Glass? It looks like the short films of a first year computer animation student http://www.activewin.com/screenshots/longhorn3/Ae
r o%20Glass%20-%20Contacts.jpg. It is for this same reason Luna in XP gets very old very fast, and anyone wanting to get some serious work done turns it off.
Or, did anyone consider the fact that these all look like crap because they can be turned off--they are only add-ons to the plain style that was introduced with Win95. They get in the way. Would anyone even consider turning off Aqua, even if you could. No, because it is part of the system, part of your work flow. (Disclaimer: I have Win2000, OS X and Ubuntu machines)
Besides, as people have noted, most individuals who are installing pirated versions have computers that can't handle Areo Glass anyway. Any computer capable enough will come with Visa pre-installed, whenever that happens to be. The rest of us be thankful that we can get the garbage out of the way, even if you believe that Visa will be able to do some real work. Me, I'll keep Windows 2000, because really haven't seen any real innovation since then--it is stable and uncluttered, which is about as good as Windows can get. -

Better pop-up extentions?
Better pop-up extentions? 1. A popup blocker that works %100 of the time. Even with Firefox 1.5 Beta2 build, I still get a popup by clicking this link http://www.activewin.com/awin/default.asp and then clicking anywhere on the page at all. Appearently they have a javascript that knows when you're 'touching' a webpage? I have to highlight text to read better so I don't know why this is going on. I do have my settings set at opening pages or user clicked popups in the same window as the current tab. Don't know if that's causing it or not. Is there a nicer Windows news website than Activewin? I'm really starting to hate that pop-up infested site. 2. Flash pop-up detector. Go here. http://www.cleveland.com/ a flash ad flys across the page. I like using Flashblock that blocks all flash (yeah, right) until I allow it to. Happens sometimes on yahoo.com news pages too. I guess I'm asking for a noscript type extension, but is dormant until I ask it to block scripts for a webpage since it's only these websites driving me nuts right now. A blacklist if you will. I spent more time messing with NoScript extension then going to my daily 45 websites. Plus I like installing a new clean install of firefox and updated extensions meaning I don't have time redoing this crap all the time. Disabling SOME scripts for websites would be cool too. Spellcheck as you type for Firefox would be a killer extension too.

Re:IFF-ILBM
Hey, someone else has had this problem too. Fortunately, free software to the rescue. and this plugin works nicely.
This is where the true support for these formats will remain - open source. If you want support, you have the freedom to write it yourself.
Of course, if memory serves me right non-free Paint Shop Pro still has IFF support as well. Hmmm. This page seems to say so. I seem to remember Photoshop having IFF support, but that was 3.0 or 4.0ish many moons ago onna MacOS classic box. -
Re:Windows 95.
Windows ME was like a 9x version of Windows 2000. It had the same icon set as Windows 2000 and actually had more "features". I remember running Windows ME on my PII 350 and I had not one problem with it. It would boot up to full load in like 20 seconds. Everything was snappy and it had alot of nifty things such as the new version of Media Player.
Am I the only person who didn't find Windows ME to suck ?
Microsoft was going to come out with Windows Tiger> which was actually another 9x OS. Im guessing they got over it and released Windows Neptune which was like a "consumer version of Windows 2000". But that became Windows Whistler or as we know Windows XP.

Anti-aliasing still looks bad
Hard to tell from the article's screenshots if the anti-aliasing was any good. Looking at some other screenshots it looks as though the answer is no. The anti-aliasing still looks like crap - inconsistant with obvious jaggies. It looks like windows fans will buy anything MS tells them to buy.

PS2 can jack into the Matrix! Coming 2001!http://www.activewin.com/news/2000/feb_3.shtml
The new Sony PlayStation 2, which goes on sale March 4 in Japan, is not only a quantum leap in game technology, but because of its Internet compatibility, it's Sony's bid to compete with AOL-Time Warner and Microsoft on the Web. In an exclusive look at the new machine, Newsweek reports in the current issue's cover story that the game console can play movie DVDs, audio CDs and can hook into the Internet. ``You can communicate to a new cybercity,'' Ken Kutaragi, the visionary behind the PlayStation, tells Newsweek. ``This will be the ideal home server. Did you see the movie 'The Matrix'? Same interface. Same concept. Starting from next year, you can jack into 'The Matrix'!''
The next level of bull from Sony.
This is also why I only have Sega and Nintendo consoles. I trust the companies behind them.

You mean like Windows ME?
I seem to recall that Ballmer had used that exact line ("It Just Works") to describe Windows ME. I can't find the exact reference, but this one might be close.
I remember this because at the time, one of my colleagues kept mocking Ballmer by deliberately misquoting it as "It just broke." To which I usually responded, "...again." -
Re:maximize/close window
the original win95 design was widely criticized. And later I think they made some change to add 1 or 2 pixels of distance between the maximize button and close button. Later in XP they made them had different colors and more far away from each other. For example, there is a Screenshot.
However, in this one, the "X" button is very close to the miximize button and even enlarged.
This makes thinking why.

The site http://www.activewin.com/winxp/tips/index.shtml successfully executed a popup on me when I visited, just now. The browser is Mozilla 1.8b using Adblock. I have javascript allowed to raise and lower windows and change images. When I disable those two Java options - no popup. Thank you for the informative and truthful, tip.

Re:I'll show you significant impact!
There are many "window managers" available for MS - if I understand correctly, these just use the Windows API to do their stuff. Snap-to, focus-follows-mouse, automatic-window-previewing during Alt+Tab switching, multiple desktops -- all these are available for free on the MS platform - mostly, IIRC, by installing the 'TweakUI' Windows software that Microsoft makes available on their website as a free download for power users. MS doesn't make these options available for normal users because of the 80-20 principle -- in their "regular" s/w they implement what is required by most of their users.
Two more examples:
1. I recall seeing a basic multiple-desktop manager on either download.com or the Ziff Davis network (don't recall) that implemented multiple desktops on a Windows system. It was open source.
2. Nvidia has an "Nvidia desktop manager", bundled free with it's Detonator drivers. This one is much easier to use than UNIX WMs and offers some cutting edge functionality: extensive hotkey, transparency, and multimonitor support, as well as two features I haven't seen on Unix WM's yet -- window color keying (useless) and partitioning *visible* screens into multiple areas with grid-lines (potentially very very useful). Here are two links to Nvidia's s/w:
Nvidia Link
Another link
"The only reason the public has stuck with Windows as long as it has is simply because they are familiar with it."
Also because it's simpler to use (compared to Unix/Linux), works well (except for security), and has scads of desktop app. support: "developers, developers, developers..." -
Windows Form
A good windows site something similar to Slashdot that I just discovered this week is ActiveWin. There doesen't appear to be very many users there and I've only seen a few posts on the site but I think that it has potential. From the few posts that I have ever saw there seems to be a lot of Linux haters, kind of reminds of the all windows haters on slashdot. The site is almost some type of strange backwards Slashdot about Windows and windows software that has very few users.

Microsoft and the "community"
I think Microsoft realised a couple of years ago that the really powerful thing about OSS was actually the community. And they want to try to make such a community themselves. That's one of the reasons I think there seem to be so many MS staff who have blogs - they want to be seen encoraging an MS community. And why they have taken to "accidentally" releasing alpha/beta stuff into the wild recently.
Some of their efforts have been laughable in the way that they have tried to make corporate efforts look as if they are really community based. I've tried to find evidence of a genuine MS community but there isn't much about. The only equivalent to Slashdot for MS lovers in ActiveWin, which has about a dozen people that post to it, mainly when a story about Linux or critical of MS comes up.
There is a lot of activity on GotDotNet, but mostly it is technical queries.
Are there other, genuine examples of MS community sites? Or alternatively, attempts that are obviously MS driven? I'm just interested to compare the strength of the OSS community with the MS community (yes I know they are not logically exclusive, but in reality it seems to be pretty much the case). -
Just wait for it

Ya, but acording to this screenshot... It may be a even WORSE user interface.
Doesn't look any different to me. All they did was put the preview pane to the right of the folder list.
All that really looks that different is the UI theme, and that's because it's from Longhorn.
Compare these screenshots:
Office 2k3 Beta 2 with a more usable layout
Outlook 2002/XP
Not much difference, except for the theme and the handling of the left-bar, with better docking of the folder view.

Re:Why corel is dying
Oh, I have nothing against opinions. It's just that comparing CorelDraw and Photoshop is like comparing a hammer and a screwdriver. In fact, I don't even know how can somebody confuse CorelDraw with a photo editing program, the last time I tried it all the examples it came with were vectorial, and all the tools in the toolbar did vectorial related stuff as well.
Here, compare: CorelDraw and PhotoPaint
Maybe you just said CorelDraw instead of PhotoPaint, but that's just weird if you worked with it. I've tried both, and really can't imagine how would CorelDraw be used to do any kind of photo manipulation. -
