Re: Thanks for the flamebait stories
Back on topic, there are hardware concentrators available for next to nothing now with VPN service to NN-loving regions like Europe for under $10/mo. Add that to whatever you pay for your monthly comcast service, and you aren't going to notice any significant price hikes. Just a thought.

Re:Why were they taxing Einstein?
Haha, funny. In China, they tax you on how many animal parts went into your product, even if fully synthetic.

Re:The only problem here I see...
I prefer Casio ones because they support engineering units better, but they are still $100...
The Chinese make some cheap graphic models: https://www.aliexpress.com/who...
Not exam certified but if you just need a decent graphic calculator they might be worth a punt.

Re:Next Up: Victoria's Secret!
Actually, there have been similar things done on overseas websites. You can buy a knockoff product out of the same factory for a tenth of the cost. And if you're lucky, it has the same logo and everything.

Re:Plug-Spreading?
Power bar extension cords. It will take 3 months to get to you, so order about 40 of them and keep them in a drawer.
To answer the question why, for almost every one of the examples given in the article, for example the Samsung, Nintendo, and Apple plugs, there is a geometry of power bar or splitter that they will fit nicely for. The Samsung and Nintendo ones, for example, are designed to play nicely on a power bar. Since most people use power bars, it is obvious that the article author went to some trouble to make sure that he used a power outlet with a side-by-side geometry that specifically didn't work for those devices. Device manufacturers are trying to make them play nicely. But yes, you will always be able to find an example where a device designed to work well with plugs of one direction won't work well with plugs of another. My advice is to stop whining, realize that the designers have to work it some way, and use your brain to work out a solution. One of which was given above.

I have ordered from AliExpress dozens of times, and have never had a problem.

Re:Blender uses threads and GPU. AMD wins
Actually I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm in the process of buying my first new desktop in years. Since I stopped configuring my own clusters I've mainly used laptops at home and whatever was on the purchase approved list at work. Now I'm buying a workstation class computer for home and don't know the best thing to do.
On my list are ryszen 7 and 5, and intel i7s.
here's an example of a couple I'm considering:
https://www.aliexpress.com/ite...
http://www.magicmicro.com/smor...
https://www.magicmicro.com/pri...not sure what the difference is between an i7-7thGen and an i7-x99
I'm not averse to building my own up from a mini itx format but I am scared about not knowing the part comaptibility. the MagicMicro site seems to offer well configured systems close to the parts cost so I'm thinking it might be the way to go. I can't tell if the ali-express one is a deal or disaster. (the thing that's a warning sign about the ali-express model is the name of the GPU card. it's got the model number of an Invidia or AMD, but the brand name is "colorful" which sounds like it's a knockoff. )

Re: Question
Stemming from this study, meals high in triglycerides are considered by FDA researchers to be the key to unlocking Type II diabetes reversal. The notion is that consuming the triglycerides interrupts a reaction between the liver and pancreas while the kidneys are overloaded with sugar from the X hours of rest.

Seriously. This is nothing new or novel. -
Re:Get a cheap PC that 10 years old, add PFSense
The AES-NI support is why I recommended the 5600 series Xeon (which has it) over the 5500 (which doesn't). Alternatively, you could grab one of these which is new, and would also do the job.

Re:Turris Omnia
Seems very expensive for what it is... If you go on AliExpress and search for "x86 router" or "arm router" you will find hundreds of options costing less than 1/3rd as much. For example: https://www.aliexpress.com/ite...
Celeron J1900 (quad core, 2.4GHz)
1x DDR RAM RAM socket
Intel chipset
mSATA SSD slot
4 Intel I211AT gigabit LAN ports
3x USB 2.0
1x USB 3.0
2x MiniPCIe ports
10W max power consumptionThe case has holes for wifi antennas, which you can order with it. It's pretty much a standard PC so will run whatever Linux or even Windows OS you want. It's got VGA as well which can be handy for an emergency shell.
You could add a really simple UPS with a 12V lead acid battery and a few diodes too.
-
Re: Get a cheap PC that 10 years old, add PFSense
Can't argue with the pricing there. But if you want something lower power and smaller size try one of these https://m.aliexpress.com/s/ite... still more power than you need for most applications (especially if you're comparison is some crappy little MIPS router). I considered pfsence but I'm more of a Linux person and didn't need the bells and whistles of the nice GUI, so it's just running stock Debian with ip tables and very little else on it (but with a lot of options if you want to do more with it).

Re:LIFE IN THE FAST LANE SURE MAKE YOU LOSE YOUR M
The current theory is one of these.
And it wasn't suicide. It was infection from it snapping in half for being cheap Chinese trash while it was being used. In those days, it would have been REAL embarrassing to go to the hospital for that! -
Allwinner
Yes, they are a shit company.
BUT, they are also very, VERY cheep. In any case, most of the GPL violating stuff has been reversed engineered.
I run this as a home server - it works great.

Re:Does this predict ruling?
Depends on how packed TRUMP makes the Supreme Court. Here is a Chinese Company's take on it. Half of the Supreme Court will knock it out knowing it will kill international trade. The other half either installed or paid off by Russians will follow through with TRUMP's directions.

Re:I liked the dot-band technology
What does that have to do with anything? Also, what currency are you referring to when saying buck? Because at $18 for the evaluation board and $12 for the programmer, your numbers seem slightly off.

Re:Did he mean an unprecedented level of gouging?
CUBOT Cell Phones - all less than $150. Many Xiaomi models including their competitors Oppo and Vivo have numerous models in the $50 - $150 price range. My own phone, a Xiaomi 2015 model (with microSD) is still about $150.

Re:That it matters, means that they've failed
You don't have to pay for engineering every time you build a charger, you pay for it once. The marginal cost of each authorized charger is no more than a few dollars. Apple didn't become the richest company on the planet by selling chargers at cost.
When I mean engineering, I mean design and engineering. Apple didn't slap some wires together and sell them as chargers. There's a lot circuitry that has been engineered in each charger. Please tell me how much more in costs that Apple put into their charger over the counterfeit. I would bet you it's more than $1 that you assert. The boards alone cost more than $1 to manufacture. They are also likely machine soldered. The DAS05 chip alone costs $1.45 each retail from what I can tell. Sure you could get them cheaper when buying in thousands/millions but it's not going to make them pennies per chip.

I programmed a cheap Android phone
Did something similar with one of these phones for a project in my master's curriculum. My team characterized different eye conditions and applied DSP to cancel out the effects. It worked OK. Basically what we were doing was to mask a spot on the retina or priapism of the cornea's reticulum.

I still buy everything from China
Because everything in the US was made by the Chinese. The US is nothing but a bunch of PATHETIC BRATS who make NOTHING anymore. Take this for example. Eight bucks. If you picked it up in a shop here, you'd be spending $50. Americans are middlemen and nothing else. Go ahead and mod me down, fool.

Re:What about accidental drops?!
XiaoMi Redmi 3 Pro 32GB ROM 4G
:: $154.59
3GB RAM, microSD, and a 4100mAH battery: 2+ days of usage. Android 5. Android 6 is available on other models, though I haven't checked if they have a micro-SD slot like the Redmi 3 does.
I flashed mine from AliExpress with another ROM that has root, but I would recommend a different seller, it had a compromised file, "com.android.comp.download.mgrv11" which showed ads everytime the phone was unlocked. Even withhout flashing, it was easy enough to disable that .mgrv component. -

Re:Xiamomi?
A top 10 global mobile-phone manufacturer (this year) that has diversified into numerous other markets. Although not even a year ago, Xiaomi was the number 1 Chinese manufacturer, but they have been eclipsed by Huawei. Xiaomi and Lenovo (+Motorola) recently dropped another notch, as Oppo and Vivo took over the 4th and 5th spots in the global mobile phone market.
TLDR; My phone: Xiaomi RedMi3 Pro Prime @ $146.99 - $10 cheaper than it was two weeks ago. -

Re:Reuseable K-Cup insert - Check your O Ring
Had the same problem--the thing leaked like a sieve.
OK, I know it's supposed to do that as it *is* a sieve...but it leaked clear water everywhere, not coffee out the bottom.Turns out there's supposed to be an O-Ring in a groove in the lid. Bought a 6-pack of new ones from aliexpress or amazon (forget which); they all had the rings intact. Now all the coffee goes in the coffee cup.
Here's a picture you can see where the ring goes.
(This isn't the one we use and I have no idea if this one is worth a darn. But it's orange & you can see the black O-ring easily in the pic) -

Cat toys and laser power
"If you think that the lasers being used to do this are $5 cat toys,"
Aliexpress has battery-powered hand-held green laser "pointers" up to 500 mW for prices under $10. For $5 you get something that isn't a cat toy but that can surely severely dazzle a pilot.
http://m.aliexpress.com/w/whol...
Numbers for context: if more than 5 mW enters the eye, there is a good chance for damage before you can blink. A car using the high beams (100,000 cd) from 100 m distance has about 1 micro-W of visible light entering your eye. At 500 m distance, the 500-mW laser has a spot size of 20 cm (8 in) with up to 0.6 mW in the eye . There is little risk for eye injury, but imagine getting dazzled by a few hundred cars that are pointing the high beams at you. Even if it's not a direct hit on the eye, it's like someone switches on a 200-lumen light on in the cockpit while the pilot is trying to see the landing strip.
