Re:Ahh!
How do you think the American public knows of these anime?
A little thing called the internets. You might have heard of it.
Oh, and let me shoot that one back at you: "How do you think the American public knows of these fansubs?" People who know they like anime can go searching for fansubs. People who might like anime, but haven't heard of it, won't learn of it from fansubs... they won't stumble onto a distribution place unless a friend points it out to them- and in that case, the friend could just as easily lend a (legal) DVD.
(Or, you could argue that a person randomly downloading from Kazaa might stumble on anime that way. But in that case, it could just as well be a DVD rip with subtitles, and not a fansub job)
For now I will stop shooting holes in your story.
You haven't contradicted me at all, yet. I already stipulated that, starting in the 1980s, fansubbers nourished the audience for anime in the USA. But that was a long time ago- even if fansubbers were a jumpstart to international anime viewership, the commercial engine is running on its own by now. US fans can see the same promotional materials the Japanese viewers do. -
Bannou bunka neko musume...

Yomiko will probably happy about this.
Yomiko Readman will no doubt benefit from this invention. Now she can use disk drives as weapons in addition to books!

Re:Also
And second, Aragorn refused the Ring, Gandalf refused it. Why can't Faramir do it as well?
Did you get to watch the extended DVD?
Again, I am not against Arwen per se, blah blah :-/ It really was bad for them to cut out that scene, as it set the stage for Faramir's behaviour in TTT. Otherwise it's just a butchering of the character. Taking that scene into account, the ending where he finally lets the hobbits go and Sam says that "you've have shown your quality" shows us Faramir's character. Really, Faramir didn't desire to have the ring. He was drawn to it as Gandalf ("don't tempt me Frodo!") and Aragorn (end of fellowship) did, and all he really desired was to get it to Gondor; the motivation behind that is in the cut scene.Agreeded, her use in the movie is far from perfect, and I really didn't 'get' her bonding with Aragorn while he was far away (turns out they were dream sequences; I really didn't know what was going on). But hey, it's not like Tolkein wrote LOTR in four years. And PJ had to produce, direct, and edit three movies too!
I hated it.
:) In the book they only bow to Sam and Frodo! What did Pippin do that was so great? :)Well, yes, but it's a direct scene (people bow to the short hobbits who have never been regarded as heros, if their existence had been acknowledged at all) not a factual scene
:-/ It takes time to set up a sequence to describe 'we only bow to these two hobbits, and we only praise these other two for their valiant service." It's hard to get the point across and not bore the audience. But it's really easy to offend people who know the story well :)The only Rohan village was the one necessary to the plot.
I think that the village that burned down was a major failing of the movie. A couple houses burning down in a field by crazy aggressive people is normal course during war times. If it felt that they destroyed something more significant (a prosperous town), not only would it have given the audience a better perspective of Rohan, but it definitely would have been more impactful and make the subsequent events (Theoden choosing to do whatever) easier to accept.
Assuming 1 km separation, Edoras is about 5000-10000 kilometers from Minas-Tirith. Does that make any sense?
It's a movie... you have to get the point across and hope that the environment presented fills the gaps so that the audience accepts what they're witnessing as they watch it.
What's a really good exercise, as far as learning what time constraints can do when trying to visually present a story, is to watch the Macross Plus OVA series and then the Macross Plus movie. Both were created by the same team, director/writers. However, one is 45min x 4, and the other is movie length. And the movie length one has extra scenes. With the OVA, you watch each volume one by one. In Japan, they were released several months apart, so each volume is expected to be watched over and over; there's much more detail and depth than is apparent at first. Shockingly, not a single frame of animation is wasted! Every second of the story has something that contributes to the understand of the plot, the characters, or the world they're in.
Then there's the movie. The first 30-40 minutes is pretty much, WTF? And then, WTF? But when it's all over you see what Kawamori-san meant when he said that it's how he expected to present Macross Plus. It's a different representation of the same story, pulled apart and re-assembled by so many constraints. But in this case, it's the same person who chose to do that as the person who created it. And it's not George Lucas we're talking about....
Anyway, I like your response. Your initial post was too short and lacked the depth needed to properly appreciate it

Re:Blame Eisner!
A number of people have criticized Atlantis as a swipe from Nadia, which was directed by Hideaki Anno (later famous for Evangelion) and based on an original concept by Miyazaki. I'm not sure if the criticism is entirely fair- I've seen Nadia but not Atlantis- but it has been made. In both cases, Disney has claimed with a straight face not to have been familiar with the Japanese work they were alleged to have been stealing from. That seems especially hard to believe in the case of Jungle Emperor Leo, since the first animated version was partially US financed and shown on American TV as Kimba the White Lion.

Re:Posted!
To those poor heathens who have no idea what this is in reference to, check out the Cowboy Bebop: The Movie page as well as this pretty good page. Of course, you can also check out AnimeFu's Cowboy Bebop pages... =) Excellent anime if I do say so myself. Worth at the very least a rent.

Re:Fascination with dubbing?
Have you actually seen the Laputa sub? It's got one of the most botched subtitling jobs I've ever seen. On Animefu, all of the reviews for this release back this fact up.

Re:Good News / Bad News
Right idea, wrong anime. Try Roujin Z .
-
Roujin Z
The funny thing is, this must have been inspired, at least in part, by a 1991 anime called Roujin Z in which an elderly invalid's robotic caretaker/bed goes berzerk and menaces a city. Heh. Life imitates art.
-
Anime comes to life?
Makes me thing of Roujin Z - the story of an old man with a robotic hospital bed powered by his dead wife's brain. (After all, who could care for him better than his wife)
Of course, when the bed seems to go haywire, hilarity follows.. -
anybody else think Roujin Z
when they saw this? It's an anime basically around an elderly person's bed(??) that goes haywire, starts absorbing stuff into itself (like vending machines) and in true anime fashion battles a giant robo.
Here's a link to animefu's info:

Oh, the humanity!
Haven't these Japanese engineers ever seen Roujin Z?
-
5-year-old in a super-human body? Maybe...Could it get to the point where you have a "child" in a super human body? Hopefully they will have Asimov's Rules in there at least.
Well, we've already had a case in Anime where there was a cat in a super-human body, so I suppose it's not too far-fetched. ^_^

Re:Homemade vs. HollywoodI agree with you that machima is just hype (most of the stuff is terrible) but I do think advancing technology has allowed hobbiests to do some incredible stuff.
For example, the anime DVD Voices of a Distant Star, a half hour anime (with cgi graphics) done by a single person (except for the voices) on a Macintosh G4/400. It was quite incredible looking, better than some professional anime with dozens of people involved.

Hello Navi...Hello Lain
The article brought up images in my mind of Lain's bedroom with all the intense looking tubing to cool down her NAVI.
I'm not really sure why I don't experiment with this stuff. My workplace has tons of this stuff just lying around since we use it to cool down LASERs and intense pulsed light devices.

a more mature evangelion
try rahxephon for size.. right from the beginning you will
get the EVA-feel, and even though it feels a little too
close to being a clone, you will realize after a short while
that it is more mature in every way compared to EVA.. both
in character, story, ending, and production. Oh yeah, especially the ending is completely brilliant.
Of course, some will never get over how much it resembles EVA in many ways, but.. look past that, and you have a brilliant series that is all what EVA only could have wished to be.(EVA was simply too childish in too many ways to appeal to me)

The View From Inside Central PA
This is going to sound sad, but here goes. So, PA wants to keep me from seeing bad things and is forcing my ISP to block these sites? Oh my God! I'm just so happy to have a government that wants to do something totally useless when it comes to protecting me while I surf the web!
Look, in all honestly, I only have a few websites that I ever visit with any regularity. Those sites are:
1. Of Course, Slashdot.
2. 1 Wrestling Dot Com - My Pro Wrestling Fix
3. My Site, Rancho Relaxo - Checking on the site, updating, etc.
4. AnimeFu - Opinions are like Escaflowne DVDs: Everybody Has One...
5. Keeping Up On That Wheaton Kid - Because the Real-Life Wil is much cooler than Wesley...
6. Cartoon Orbit - Their gToons game is neat, and yes, I'm addicted to cartoons.
7. Yahoo! Games - Pinochle and Spades.
That's it. At least once a day, I visit these sites (my own site even less). Sometimes I Google for info and images. But there is one thing that I'm most certainly not sick or stupid enough to go after, and that's child pr0n. Honestly, I don't have to go looking for regular, legal porn, either.
So, my ISP is now going to have to filter out sites I don't even care to think about, let alone visit. Not that I much care, really. Just interesting to know that I'm being protected by a state government that spawned the first ever Secretary of Homeland Security (Tom Ridge, who's only positive achievement as our governer was finally raising the highway speed limit to 65), cost my father his job twice (taking two state hosipitals and making them private), screwed up my student loans (AES/PHEAA is guilty there), can't maintain roads properly...
You get the idea, right? -

Re:Anime As A Valid Cultural Influence
1) What did happen? I'm as confused as the rest of us.
2) They are a secret plot to increase hospital funding.
3) <Insert Ranma, episode 1 summary > <Insert Ranma, episode 2 summary > ... <Insert Ranma, episode n summary>
4) Hire scientists from the future, get a mystic to power your creation, and super-size it at McDonalds.
5) This is a trick question. You can't. (Law 11, 2nd Corrllary).
So, do I pass? -
Here's something for the Survey level classFor all you people that want to see the funny part of anime: Dare to be Stupid.
For the advanced course, I would recommend a mix of Evangelion and Memories (especially Magnetic Rose and Cannon Fodder).
For the Phd degree, submit a one page dissertation explaining the reason for the plot developments in the Excel Saga.

just like in "Lain"...
i was struck, when watching Lain for the first time, just how much the creators must have loved Scully-era Apple dreams of the future. ("Navi" stood for "Knowledge Navigator", and ran something futuristic called "Copland OS", i.e. what was going to be Apple's new modern OS before they canned the project and bought NExT, begetting OS X)
The machines in Lain are surprisingly close to the newest Palm handhelds, and Copland OS looks a lot like OS X (ok, maybe a bit more 3-D).

Central NJ Anime stores
Hi there,
I am living in Central Jersey as well (near New Brunswick).
I'm not sure exactly where you are in Central NJ, but here is a list of what I have found:
Knight Dreams
82 Nassau St. 2nd Floor, Princeton, NJ 08542
(609) 497-4525
Knight Dreams has an extremely huge Anime rental selection; if you name it they probably have it.
The only store which has a good selection on both VHS and DVD.
They also sell comics/manga and host gaming nights. The owner there is very nice.
I highly recommend this place.
Video Stars
1745 State Route 27, Edison NJ
(732)287-9444
Has an anime section, but it seems mostly Hentai oriented (sexually explicit). Somehow, the owners think every anime is the same. Thus, "Ranma" (mostly a kids comedy) has an "18 or over" sticker on it, and sits next to "La Blue Girl" (hentai). However, the non-hentai material includes: Bastard!, Slayers, Video Girl AI, Gundam Movies.
Another annoying thing: for some reason, they often have just one tape of a series, and it will be a tape other than volume 1.
Raritan Video
75 Raritan Ave, Highland Park NJ
(732)846-2224
This has a decent selection, has no hentai, and is located in the middle of the store. They have some Dragon Ball, Akira, Record of Lodoss War, Macross Plus.
Hollywood Video
725 Promenade Blvd, Bridgewater NJ
(732)564-0245
Chain rental stores are a hit-or-miss, when it comes to Anime. This particular store has an Anime section that includes: Cowboy Bebop, Blue Seed, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Patlabor, Vampire Princess (OVA). They rent for five days, so it might be worth taking the trip.
Blockbuster Video
7000 Hadley Rd, South Plainfield NJ
(908)561-1222
Another big-bad-boy chain. This store seems to mostly carry action-packed and shonen (boys) anime.
Some titles include: Akira, Macross II movie, Ninja Scroll (on DVD), Slayers movie.
Buying Anime
If you are looking to buy Anime, the stores in the malls often carry a huge selection.
Check out Sam Goody, SunCoast video or Saturday Matinee.
However, I usually find cheaper prices online at Amazon and Buy.com.
NYC:
Metro Anime Shopping Guide
This Metro Anime group seems to be very active, and has compiled a very handy shopping guide.
NYC-anime.com shopping guide
This guide has a good map of Manhattan, pointing out locations of Anime and Manga stores.
Conventions
Shoujocon 2002
If you are into Shoujo (girl's comics/anime) at all, you might want to check out Shoujocon. It is happening July 19-21 at the Hilton in East Brunswick. This will be my first year, so I cannot comment about it personally, but from what I have heard, it sounds like a lot of fun.
Web Resources
Anime Turnpike
This is a pretty good starting point for all things anime on the web.
AnimeFu
Yeah, yeah - I know it's under the "Quick Links" section of Slashdot, but this is a good place to learn. I like to check the new reviews daily.
Recommended Anime/Manga
Here's a list of recommended Anime and Manga. Opinions vary, of course, but this seems like a good starting point for Anime beginners. It sure helped me understand what's out there.
Hope that helps!

What's next?
Today we have robot's that scape. We already have computers that ask is they are human! Technology is wonderful, but unfortunatelly only a few can understand what is so special about a fleeing robot (everyone here can, I guess).
Geez, we are playing as Gods, creating and tunning something that may someday, search for the reasons of its own existence!
And if you ask me if we are to be damned, I'll tell you that the objective of live is to learn, and no knowledge is forbidden.
(Now, for the the +1: Funny - Anyone believe we really have to fight against angels with giant robots?) -
Roujin Z
Yaskawa Electric Corp., which supplies robots to auto assembly lines, has developed a $105,000 bed-shaped robot that can help rehabilitation patients who need to strengthen their legs.
Sounds like Roujin Z to me. Roujin Z is a very funny anime by Katsuhiro Ôtomo, the director of the famous Akira. In the anime the story follows an old man in a new hightech bed, that is made to care for him. You can read a much longer review here. -
Re:X-Windows?
Guess they'll be suing these people then.

Finding Anime OnlineFor just reviews, try CmdrTaco's Animefu, or try a Google search.
As for buying anime, the above-mentioned Animefu gives links to AnimeNation; I've used Robert's Anime Corner Store before. You can also try looking for anime stores via Google. (Which, strangely enough, gives the exact two places I mentioned as the first and second links in the same order I mentioned - weird
:).)The best way to find anime though is to find a friend who likes it and watch what they have. That's how I found out about anime first and why I have a growing collection of anime DVDs.

About that bet...[Cartoon Network cut out] all of episode 23
Which is the best episode in the entire series - that sucks. It involves Gene needing to shoot a smutty video to get better caster shells and is generally a rather amusing episode. I got to watch the entire series when a friend of mine rented the DVDs from a local video store (which, due to its proximity to a tech college, has a fairly nice anime section). It's a pretty cool series.
I'd be willing to bet that Gene was sleeping with Suzuka and Aysha
I don't think so - at least not in the subbed episodes I saw. While Gene had definately had some fun with the waitress at home who's butt he's always grabbing (in the uncensored version, at least...), I highly doubt anyone had any sexual anything with Suzuka - she wanders off too much and just doesn't seem intersted in a sexual way with anyone on the craft. Gene definately arouses a sort of curiosity with her because she follows them around and helps them throughout the series.
I don't think anyone was interested in Aisha Clan Clan (at least, that's the spelling off Animefu). Although some other genres of anime might have people having relations with cat women, she seemed to be there more for comic relief than anything else - besides, Gene was too busy chasing Melfina and Suzuka.
The only one Gene might have gotten it on with during the series is Melfina, and late in the series at that. Although the full version has a scene were Gene tries to get it on with Melfina only to be stopped by Jim, I don't think he actually got it on later in the series - but he could have, I suppose. It's not too clear one way or the other.
(I'm trying to remember if there's a scene with Gene and Melfina in their underware in his room or not... I can't remember... I know the two of them get naked together at one time in the Naked Tube (Melfina helps control the ship by entering this tube which magically removes the clothing of all occupants) when Melfina uses it to help save Gene - but I don't think Gene was up for much of anything at the time and I'm not sure the two of them could actually touch or interact anywhere except in a sort of spectral plane of existance while in the tube.)

News for nerds?
I've never been able to make the connection between the "news for nerds" thing and anime. Especially when Cmdr Taco already takes care of his anime fix via Anime Fu.
Am I the only one here who doesn't see the connection? Maybe it's the "stuff that matters" part...in which case I'll just go away (for now). -
How soon? Obviously...
Sometime between the first and second impacts, when the Magi are programmed by Ritsuko's mother. Then we'll have the three forces of Mother, Woman, and Scientist to rule our entire nation. (If you haven't watched enough Neon Genesis: Evangelion [animefu.com])

5) Haro toy (like a Furby, but from Gundam and infinitely cooler)
6) Rob to get some taste in anime
7) More money
8) 1/55 Hi-Metal Bandai "VF-1S Strike Valkyrie" toy

10) ...to be able to use Linux without being gripped by "the fear(tm)"

It was a reference to the Japanese animated series Serial Experiments Lain . In the series, the Internet is called "the Wired". And computers are called "Navis". But yes, our representatives might be wired in that sense, too. =)

Thank God. Until I got to that last sentence, I thought they were going to forget to link to AnimeFu.
