Social Media needs to decide what it is
The social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook say that they are platforms, and therefore they should not be held liable for awful things that people say on their platforms. They aren't curated information streams like a newspaper, where nothing is published without editorial oversight.
However, they have been indulging in quite a bit of curation. And it hasn't been even-handed. If they like you, you can literally get away with inciting violence; if they don't like you, they will strike you down or shadow-ban you for any reason or no reason.
There are numerous cases of conservatives being suspended or banned from social media over relatively mild stuff (for example, telling a journalist to "Learn to code") while liberals can make jokes about the President being assassinated, wish for conservative people's children to be raped, etc. The post "#MAGAkids go screaming, hats first, into the woodchipper" did not result in any punishment from Twitter. This tweet was accompanied with a cartoon picture of a man feeding a body into a woodchipper and bloody snow. By "#MAGAkids" he meant some high school students who were in the news at the time.
https://www.rt.com/usa/449368-disney-producer-threatens-maga-kids/
Keith Olbermann wrote on Twitter these words: "we should do our best to make sure the rest of his life is a living hell." Who was the target of his wrath? A man who had a permit to hunt turkeys who shot a turkey. Olbermann has a million followers and some of them went on to harass the hunter. Twitter did not punish Olbermann in any way. (Faced by a backlash of bad publicity, Olbermann made a follow-up tweet saying that his words were not intended as an actual threat.)
I found an article that claims that a statistical analysis shows that this isn't just a few anecdotes, it's a trend.
I tried to use Facebook Messenger to send a link to a satirical essay. It would not allow me to send it, and it gave a totally nonsense reason. I just tried it again just now and the same thing happened; here's the error:
It looks like you were misusing this feature by going too fast. You've been blocked from using it.
Learn more about blocks in the Help Center.
If you think this doesn't go against our Community Standards let us know.I was "going too fast"? After not using Messenger for over 24 hours, I attempted to send a single URL, so that message is clearly nonsense. Obviously I was merely guilty of wrongthink. The essay makes the point that the USA is spending so much money that it's not possible to "soak the rich" to pay for it all, using a sort of reducto ad absurdium. Clearly someone who works for Facebook doesn't like this essay or doesn't like "Iowahawk". If you want to read this forbidden essay, here you go:
Iowahawk: Feed Your Family on 10 Billion a Day
Then there is the current controversy over Twitter apparently shadowbanning the movie Unplanned. So far Twitter has adamantly maintained that everything that looked like shadowbanning was just buggy code, but this seems really egregious. The Unplanned Twitter account at one point had more followers than Planned Parenthood, and then suddenly it had zero followers. Peopl

Re:What higher temperatures
Higher temperatures sooner in the year causing earlier melting.
In Colorado we've had record low temperatures for February.
A trend which carried on in March
It may surprise you to learn that after things get cold in an area that they then get warmer which causes all that snow to melt. The increasingly extreme weather and weather fluctuations are indicative of Climate Change.
It's not a coincidence that all these "rare weather events" are becoming increasingly common because they are part of the larger pattern that is Climate Change.

Where do you think much of the snowpack is, hmm...
Maybe flooding is due to more moisture?? Like, say from a rare event that dropped a lot more moisture across a wide region than normal??
Nah, can't be! Has to be the mythical Spaghetti Monster vibrating the atmosphere to shake out all the water!

Re:7$ vs 300$ sunglasses
Off topic, different item. But Payless opened a fake shoe store and people thought the shoes were designer brands. With that being said, how many dollar store sun glass's would sell for premium prices if they were sold in a different store???
https://philadelphia.cbslocal....
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) â" Paylessâ(TM) recent marketing campaign tricked fashion influencers into paying significantly more for a pair of affordable shoes. The retailer created a new store, called Palessi, as an experiment to see just how much fashion-forward people would pay to have high-end shoes. Influencers, professionals that inspire consumers to make purchases based on their expertise, were invited to attend a grand opening for âoePalessiâ â" a new high-end designer. Researchers Testing Out Male Birth Control Gel Those that attended the exclusive party paid between $200 and $600 for Payless shoes that typically run up to $40. Payless, as Palessi, sold $3,000 worth of shoes in hours within the opening. âoeI would pay $400, $500,â said one influencer. âoePeople will be like âwhere did you get those?'â Other influencers remarked on the look of the shoes, the quality of the material, and were overall impressed by the Payless shoes. -

Re:Discredited
Everybody keeps throwing around all of these ways that China could abuse this system, like discrediting based on social media post or publishing dissenting material. Thing is, they haven't implemented anything like that.
Can you prove that? Even circumstantial evidence? An anecdote?
The fact that is exactly what the Chinese government is saying in their own words pretty much guarantees it is anything except that.
So far the only thing that dings your score is criminal charges, traffic violations, and defaulting on loans. So it's like a cross between a criminal record and a credit score. Not very dystopian.
Even if your previous point had any weight to it and didn't have all the weight behind it being wrong, because one hasn't done something doesn't mean they won't unless we're talking laws of physics or math.
The article from The Guardian linked to this very story lists:
Social credit offenses range from not paying individual taxes or fines to spreading false information and taking drugs. Here's an article from about a year ago when China started the project.
https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2018/04/24/china-assigns-every-citizen-a-social-credit-score-to-identify-who-is-and-isnt-trustworthy/It details the offence:
Liu is a journalist who was ordered by a court to apologize for a series of tweets he wrote and was then told his apology was insincere. So no, people are not throwing around claims you can be discredited based on your social media posts because it *might* happen.
People are throwing around the fact you get discredited based on your social media posts because reporters show the court rulings showing exactly that.I've seen reports listing many many different offences that lower your score, and yes most are not note worthy in my opinion as I agree those offences really are offences, often times crimes in most nations not just China.
Not paying taxes and fines will land you in trouble nearly everywhere.
Not giving up a train seat reserved by another person is very asshole behavior everywhere, if not a crime too. That would certainly get you arrested and jailed in the US.
Smoking in a non-smoking area is very asshole behavior and should be a crime if not - and I even say that as a smoker, some common courtesy and basic empathy is all one needs to know not everyone is like me, not everyone wants exposed to that, and there is nothing special about me to force that on others. My choice, my habit, my responsibility to not be a fucktard to other people.
Of course one may ask if the punishment is too harsh. Or as you point out:
The big problem I'm seeing here is that it digs people into a hole. If a person is defaulting on loans too much, they end up in a situation where paying off future loans becomes more difficult. That seems counter productive.
This is certainly a big problem. It isn't unique to China or this program either.
I think many laws in the US are far too harsh for any possible reform to happen, and in some cases are nearly guaranteed to make things worse.
It isn't like we don't have huge abuses by the government and law here too!I agree this program in China sounds much the same that way, so sadly nothing special there.
But it's still dishonest to claim those abuses don't exist and pretend they can't get worse.

California BioBank Stores Baby DNAhttps://sanfrancisco.cbslocal....
If you or your child was born in California after 1983, your DNA is likely being stored by the government, may be available to law enforcement and may even be in the hands of outside researchers.
Like many states, California collects bio-samples from every child born in the state. The material is then stored indefinitely in a state-run biobank, where it may be purchased for outside research. -

What a pittance
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was offering $4.6 billion over 25 years. Needless to say, the top Republicans in the House and Senate were more than happy to use taxpayer money to prop up a failing private business while at the same time ignoring the $74 billion pension deficit created by another Republican, Tom Ridge.

Re: Too much confusion?
Note that per law the seller must inform the buyer and offer a refund. The action is a requirement of the seller, not the buyer. And cancelling (which seems to be happening more than new orders) can take months to resolve as well. But when you're funding operations on deposits, things get dicey when people want their deposits back. Losing hundreds of millions of dollars a month doesn't help the situation at all.

I think it's great you've avoided talking about her twin ding-bat that's been hosting a Chinese spy for years.
Since you obviously follow Donald Trump on Twitter and I don't, you had me at a disadvantage. I had to go find what you were talking about that would have me spitting nails. I found this one about rigged algorithms. This isn't news, I've been using Google+ since it premiered and it's incredibly obvious during each election since it came out. Since we were talking about Obama, media and what Trump said about them, I did find a tweet from a couple of days ago where he mentioned Obama and media in the same tweet. Exactly which one is supposed to have me spitting nails?

Just in the nick of time.
Glad that for a few days, weeks, months, or maybe years, that it's finally finished, since one end of it is about to disappear below the surface of the ocean.
According to https://miami.cbslocal.com/201... a child born today has basically no chance of driving a car around the streets of Miami, Florida. In fact, there are children old enough to to know what Miami is, understand what's happening to it, who will never be able to drive its streets... (nor ride around in an Ubber or a Lyeft or whatever,) BUT, on the plus side, that child WILL be able to paddle in an ocean-going kayak, or sail a shallow-bottomed boat around in the ocean above what WAS Miami, and look down and see the foundations of all the houses and buildings that have mostly been washed away thanks to the pounding of the waves and surf, before they too are reclaimed.

Re: States can get serious
1) The last thing the undocumented want is to bring attention from the state as that leads to them being deported.
You've ignored that the "sanctuary" state of California and the cities within have shown no inclination to do anything to deport illegal immigrants -- quite the opposite. San Francisco is now allowing them to vote in school elections, and some cities even bring them into the government.
2) The undocumented know that both political parties hate their guts.
*snort* The Democrats have become the party of illegal immigration. Immigrants are the party's base of the future. If Democrats were really serious about immigration, they'd work with Trump and bring a sane immigration policy that put American interests first.

Re:Yes, they can harm people
I agree the FCC does an important job of keeping the bands organised. To anyone who says they don't serve a purpose I'd like to image a world where your favorite TV, radio, or WIFI devise needs to be tuned across the entire spectrum in order to find clear channels. actually TV is so wide bandwidth it probably never would have taken off without the FCC.
However, I wouldn't say they prevent fake distress calls. If anything one could say they facilitate them in the same way the phone company facilitates fake 911 calls, by making it easier to make distress calls. As the crime they are going to be charged with is more likely to fall under fraud/obstruction/wreckless endangerment than operating outside of approved band/power. That would be a crime even if there was no FCC, though I'm sure the FCC helps with the investigation if able. Unless these were some sort of noise misinterpreted as distress calls, in which case I'm going to request citation as it sounds interesting and I can't find it online.

Re:Something changed, it wasn't the guns
I go through a lot of trouble to make sure that my guns are secure at all times.
Apparently that puts you in the minority of gun owners.
WASHINGTON (CBSMiami) – Public health experts found more than half of gun owners in the U.S. do not properly store their weapons in the home.Experts say it’s the first step owners can take in preventing a gun tragedy from occurring.
Retired police officer John Imperato keeps his weapons and ammunition under lock and key.
“I like to keep the weapons in one safe, the ammo in another safe and all other equipment (magazines, etc.) in a third safe,” Imperato said.
A national survey out of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health finds Imperato is actually in the minority:
“54 percent of gun owners do not store all their guns locked away in a secure manner,” said Daniel Webster, Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy & Research Director.
The survey defines safe storage as a locked gun safe, cabinet, or case.
Webster, the study’s co-author, says self-defense is one reason why many owners don’t follow safe storage protocol.
“They want to be able to easily access a loaded gun that they can fire rather quickly,” he said.
But research shows gun ownership actually elevates the risk for homicide in the homeand increases the suicide risk.
“In the current context we’re also concerned about teenagers taking guns from their home and carrying out acts of violence,” Webster said.
Experts and owners agree – safe storage helps prevent tragedy and theft.
“I used to be a firearms instructor so safety is the first thing,” Imperato said.
Researchers found taking a gun safety course also led to greater use of safe storage practices at home.
The study found gun owners were 44 percent more likely to practice safe storage if they have a child under 18 in the home.

Re:You have to know your suckers... Er, audience.
I can't speak to your story specifically, but you must have found the only two conservatives so inebriated that they couldn't stand up, because that's the only way a conservative can't rattle off what was wrong with Hillary. Hillary has been in the national political spotlight for more than 25 years, and conservatives know exactly who and what she is. Off the top of my head:
- Married to and enabler of the serial rapist and female abusing Bill Clinton. Multiple counts of demonizing his victims, even with mountains of evidence. Hillary was Bill Clinton's feminist beard for their entire marriage.
- Zero accomplishments as a politician
- Managed to spell the Russian reset button wrong, allowed the murder of our Ambassador and others at Benghazi, Libya by refusing to send requested increases in security because of the "optics" and then tried to cover it up.
- Violated federal laws on the handling of classified information and records retention laws by running a private, unsecured server in her bathroom to shield her activities as secretary of state from FOIA requests and legal review and discovery. Lied to congress that all business related emails were handed over, destroyed 40,000 plus emails. Received and sent dozens of emails containing classified information including SCI classified information unencrypted and unsecured in direct violation of federal law.
- Was the driving force behind the failed Hillary care
- Anti 2nd amendment, including lobbying for the AWB and numerous other activities
- Has had numerous people murdered, including Vince Foster, Jim McDougal and Ron Brown. The Clintons are clearly mob connected and have had numerous people killed: http://lasvegas.cbslocal.com/2... The body count of close friends and associates who have died mysteriously at very opportune times for the Clintons is massive beyond all coincidence for any reasonable person. Ask yourself, how many people do you know in any capacity have died under mysterious circumstances? The Clintons have almost 50...Everyone knew who Hillary Clinton was long before she ran for president. Conservatives have loathed her since 1993.

The recent tax bill also tilts toward red states in that state and local taxes cannot be deducted as much as before from the total taxed. (Some may claim this is "more fair", but blue states already pay a disproportionate amount of money to the Federal Gov't, per population.)

Gay tend to be DINKs (double income no kids), so they have high household incomes and can afford nice houses. They pay property taxes to support the schools, but don't have kids, leading to higher per student educational spending. They contribute to a thriving urban culture and nightlife.
Do you have any sources or figures for that?
Exactly how much of an impact are they having and in what ways?
Do you have any evidence that proves that higher per-student educational spending leads to better educated students? I was under the impression that there was no correlation between spending and outcome regarding education.
If an increase in spending does directly improve student education, how much of that increased spending is due to the homosexual people who live there and how much better is that than typical heterosexual households in the same income bracket?
Furthermore, if there's shown to be an increase in tax dollars from homosexuals how do you compare and weight that against children born in heterosexual households? If we don't care about the continuation of our country, or even of our species, then disregard this one. -

Seriously? I did a Google search on "Chicago dead voters" and this was the first hit:
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/20...In all, the analysis showed 119 dead people have voted a total of 229 times in Chicago in the last decade.
That's just the ones they found so far.
So far, then, you found next to nothing then. 119 people. 229 times. Some of which are likely not actual problems. Over 10 years. In a county with 5 million people. Go find us a real problem instead.
I went to check more recent news on voter ID laws and perhaps you've been busy like I have the last couple days and were unaware that Trump and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel have been going back and forth the last few days over voter fraud problems in Chicago. I didn't know this until today but it's apparently been on the news a bit for a week now.
People don't know how bad it is in Chicago because no one has taken the time to take a good look at it.
People have been complaining about Chicago for decades now. Yet they haven't taken a good look? Seems like there's a problem there. Maybe people just want something to complain about, rather than actually find real problems,
We won't know how bad it is until we look either. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel seems pretty adamant on keeping the federal government from looking too. Why would that be?
He knows how incompetent Donald Trump is?
I know that "if you have nothing to hide then we should be free to look" is not how the government should treat people. That is how people should deal with the government though.
Indeed, the government has been at fault.

I didn't know this until today but it's apparently been on the news a bit for a week now.
People don't know how bad it is in Chicago because no one has taken the time to take a good look at it. We won't know how bad it is until we look either. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel seems pretty adamant on keeping the federal government from looking too. Why would that be?
I know that "if you have nothing to hide then we should be free to look" is not how the government should treat people. That is how people should deal with the government though.
