Re:none
I'm saying yanking the battery doesn't always work
It's physically impossible for it not to work, do you understand that? The kind of memory used to keep those settings is volatile, which means it needs a power source in order to keep its contents. Your friend, if he even exists, needed to remove the laptops battery, the power cord, and the battery that is on the mobo. No power.
You can in fact restrict optical disc booting, target disk mode, and single user mode, etc. In fact the password also restricts resetting pram. It isn't selective so far as i can see, you cant ONLY restrict certain things making it less useful for situations like a school that wishes to simply lock down a machine but still allow use.
Yes, the password restricts resetting pram by using the keyboard at boot. I'm talking about resetting by removing all power. Notice how Apple doesn't mention this on the page you linked to.
You weren't trying to be polite at all, you responded to my original 3 sentence post with an attempt to fight about shit i never even said, and don't care about. You'd like to have a fight with someone about macs vs. pcs, but you're better off looking elsewhere.
Here is a copy of your post:
On a PC it might be futile to set passwords and try to prevent reinstallation, but a macbook is a bit different, they can't just be reset by hitting a switch like most PCs.
I'm saying this statement is wrong, that is what this is about. I'm not even fighting macs vs pcs, I don't even know where you got that from. I'm actually saying the opposite, I'm saying they're the same thing at the level we're talking about.
And yes, I take /. posts seriously. You're passing off information that simply is not correct and you're also making Mac users look ignorant and smug. If you just want to talk out of your ass and have a circle jerk with your posts, please, let me redirect you. Thanks. -

Re:"soon-to-be Leader of the Free World"
Obviously a troll that has gotten out of hand, but,
On the news recently your government is seeming to force the closure of many coffee shops and brothels and force them deeper into the red light district, citing 'criminal elements.'
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2008/12/07/Amsterdam_targets_sex_and_drug_crime/UPI-68241228633552/
There's quite a CCTV, speed cameras, and speed measuring devices installation which has the underpinnings of a surveillance society.
Race and race relations are not great there, and there are many news articles and posts about that -- including this one ( a bit old but still relevant, this is a law focused on restricting freedom of expression and religious belief and are even extending it to campuses.)
http://digg.com/world_news/Muslim_women_protest_outside_Dutch_parliament_against_burqa_ban
A law like this would be directly against the US Constitution.
Also it has the 8th highest taxation rate/GDP ratio which I consider oppressive.
While on an individual basis it seems you can do whatever you want to kill yourself, there are some issues as a 'free society' just as in the United States that you guys are dealing with.

Re:Anonymous Coward
you are right. Protesters that chain themselves to a fence deserve to be Tazered over and over and over again. come on they chained themselves to a fence! chains can kill! the cops need to tazer the man so many time because of how dangerous he was! HE WAS ASKING FOR IT!
the following is from a previous slashdot discussion...
"this is also considered resisting arrest and in situations officers will repeatedly tazer a limp person to torture them or pay them back for making them work. This happens a lot with protesters who make 2 or more cops carry them off, One who chained himself to a fence was tazered enough times that the cop had to get a second tazer as he emptied his. The man refused to unlock himself, the cop was too pig headed to get a set of bolt cutters and drag him off and was intent in teaching the protester a lesson.

Sorry, but cops and "authorities" love to physically assault peaceful protesters. It happens so much I almost wonder if they train them to do it.
Back in the 50's and 60' it was not unheard of corrupt cops being beaten severely off duty, but they also fired and blackballed dirty cops then when they discovered they were doing wrong... today they get a 3 month paid vacation and protected by their other gang members.

BoycottNovell - the sad truth
Look, zealous protesters on private property and zealous policemen aside, Roy Schestowitz is just a kid with massive amounts of time on his hands and a grudge the size of Ireland. He's an unemployed college dropout who lives with his parents (I'm not kidding here) and his credibility level is less than zero. Occasionally he'll write up something interesting, but with his seemingly 24/7/365 posting activity (just head on to COLA to get an idea) most of what he writes is just self-referential gobbledygook of no value whatsoever. Six or seven thousand-word-plus posts per day? No way.
Anyone who thinks Microsoft made Hans Reiser kill his wife, claims he turned down a "six figure" job because they asked him for a Word document or posts things like these shouldn't be taken seriously. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, and that's what he banks on. The rest is really just his inexperience, insane hatred and child-like demeanor showing through.
That blog is nothing more than an endless stream of misrepresentations, thinly veiled lies, witch hunts and weird "THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD BE SCARED OF" prose, accentuated by what I suppose he thinks are "funny" photoshopped images of people and things he thinks are out to get him. A few days ago he wrote up a storm about all the journalists he estimated had been "bribed" by Microsoft because they got evaluation laptops with Windows 7, and a few of those people actually humoured him by stopping by and explaining why they wouldn't throw away decades of journalistic experience and reputation for a $2,000 laptop, but he just ignored them. Hey, he's right and he knows it.
Linux.com featured an article by Bruce Byfield on this. Roy has a retinue of about half a dozen hanger-ons why post up a storm whenever and wherever anyone criticizes his abrasive "advocacy", which can be seen clearly there... don't miss the fact that our very own favorite troll is also chummy with him (I mean if you needed an excuse). It seems he does these days is post links to Schestowitz's blog with his fourteen accounts anyway.
I'm sure it's important to keep an eye out for Microsoft and all, but by god, this guy is just bad news for the FOSS community. He brings out the worst of the "OMG I HATE MICROSOFT, I AM ANGRY AND I'M GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!" crowd. On purpose, I'm sure. Because the more abrasive he becomes, the more people dislike him and the more he can claim he's being "stalked" and "targeted" by the Evil Empire (TM). That kid is trapped in a vicious circle he built for himself. He needs to take a deep breath, go outside and play or something. He's so desperate and impatient to make a name for himself but he goes about it with such incompetence (volume != quality) that sometimes I think he must be sponsored by someone or something like that. Hell, he's already claiming Microsoft and Novell are directly responsible for all this.
Anyway, teh internet is serious business and all that...

Re:And of course
A lot of the anti-climate change stuff uses similar tactics -- a couple of dissenting voices are used to support the idea that there is "widespread disagreement" on the topic.
On Wikipedia? Hardly. It has been my observation that Wiki is an echo chamber for the pro-climate change stuff. I had an article to reference, but it's gone. Apparently censored. It did exist on archive.org, but apparently it has been purged there too. Hmm, I wonder why. You can find a digg reference to it here, but again, no article text. I did finally manage to dig up some of the copy here... The cult of climate change has much more effective censors than the scientologists do apparently... For posterity, here's the interesting bit:
In contrast to the high-handed treatment that greet global warming skeptics, those who support the orthodoxy are puffed up and protected from criticism, their errors erased and their controversies hushed. This is the case with Naomi Oreskes, a scientist with a PhD who had arrived at an absurd finding: That no studies in a major scientific database questioned the UN view of climate change."
"For this reason, when visiting Oreskes's page on Wikipedia several weeks ago, I was surprised to read not only that Oreskes had been vindicated but that Peiser had been discredited. More than that, the page portrayed Peiser himself as having grudgingly conceded Oreskes's correctness.
Upon checking with Peiser, I found he had done no such thing. The Wikipedia page had misunderstood or distorted his comments. I then exercised the right to edit Wikipedia that we all have, corrected the Wikipedia entry, and advised Peiser that I had done so.
Peiser wrote back saying he couldn't see my corrections on the Wikipedia page. Had I neglected to save them after editing them?, I wondered. I made the changes again, and this time confirmed that the changes had been saved. But then, in a twinkle, they were gone again! I made other changes. And others. They all disappeared shortly after they were made.
Nonplused, I investigated. Wikipedia logs all changes. I found mine. And then I found Tabletop's. Someone called Tabletop was undoing my edits, and, following what I suppose is Wiki-etiquette, also explained why. "Note that Peiser has retracted this critique and admits that he was wrong!" Tabletop said.
I undid Tabletop's undoing of my edits, thinking I had an unassailable response: "Tabletop's changes claim to represent Peiser's views. I have checked with Peiser and he disputes Tabletop's version."
Tabletop undid my undid, claiming I could not speak for Peiser.
Why can Tabletop speak for Peiser but not I, who have his permission?, I thought. I redid Tabletop's undid and protested: "Tabletop is distorting Peiser. She does not speak for him. Peiser has approved my description of events concerning him."
Tabletop parried: "we have a reliable source to this. What Peiser has said to *you* is irrelevant."
Tabletop, it turns out, has another name: Kim Dabelstein Petersen. She (or he?) is an editor at Wikipedia. What does she edit? Reams and reams of global warming pages. I started checking them. In every instance I checked, she defended those warning of catastrophe and deprecated those who believe the science is not settled. I investigated further. Others had tried to correct her interpretations and had the same experience as I â" no sooner did they make their corrections than she pounced, preventing Wikipedia readers from reading anyone's views but her own. When they protested plaintively, she wore them down and snuffed them out. By patrolling Wikipedia pages and ensur

Re:I wish the US Supreme Court was that smart.
If you read some of the documents regarding the NSA and AES it doesn't look like it would be that hard for them to do it. http://digg.com/security/Did_the_NSA_put_a_Secret_Backdoor_in_New_Encryption_Standard
Even if that's true (and I doubt it), the NSA isn't going to step up for an ordinary criminal case, not even for any court-bound terror case, and certainly not for kiddie porn and financial cases. As soon as it becomes known that AES (or any encryption method) is "sufficiently" breakable by the NSA or anyone else, people will look to other encryption methods - ones the NSA might not find so easy to break. And even if court records are sealed, the information will get out - maybe not on the first case, but probably sooner rather than later, and sooner than the NSA would want. No, if the NSA has such capabilities, they'll be using them for decrypting information which will never see a court room; lesser uses just don't make sense. Say what you will about the NSA, but they're smart enough to have their priorities straight.
Or course, some would suggest that the NSA might be willing to decrypt information so as to give hints to investigators about where else to look for evidence. However, even that would provide indirect knowledge to persons outside the NSA, and today's prosecutor might become tomorrow's ACLU lawyer. They're smarter than that. If they have such capabilities, we'll never hear of it until years after AES is supplanted by something else, if ever.

Re:Note to self...
Extremely off-topic but I don't think anyone will notice.
The only really sane response in that Digg thread is the one from popfrogs, but then again what do you expect from Digg? Here's his response by the way:
The point remains that a man was high up in a tree. No weapons. He's not going anywhere anytime soon. If you're going to Tase him, you slowly draw out the taser, check if it's on or armed or whatever, then take your sweet time aiming at him before firing. The nutjob in the tree is lucky the cop was a bad shot, otherwise he'd be dead.
Seriously though, why even shoot anything at the guy? If you wait long enough the dumbass will get hungry and climb down. All you had to do is call the catering van with some smoked sausages and bring a giant net from the fire department. Then you have lunch and maybe even dinner while you wait. What an easy and fun day it could have been for everyone.
This response obviously applies to the incident inf New York with Inman Morales aswell. Simply replace tree with ledge. The whole reasoning that he could be a "danger to others" with a "two-metre-long fluorescent light" is ridiculous.
Don't interpret this is an answer to your question though, I knew you were being sarcastic
;-) -
Re:Note to self...
Tasers work!
Just the other day there was a man on a ledge and the police were afraid he'd jump.
He wouldn't come down, so they Tasered him!He came down quickly after that, I assure you. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080925/world/stun_gun_death_2
Tasers seem like an excellent way to prevent people at height from harming themselves by bringing them very rapidly to the ground.
I'm curious though, is it preferred to use the taser or a firearm to make people fall out of trees?

Re:Hallelujah!
How about his filings disrespectful to the courts for starters? Perhaps submitting gay porn as court documents so they're part of the public record strikes you as a better reason? How about "making false and disparaging statements" about judges and other attorneys?
The claims are that he repeatedly makes false and inflammatory claims about others in and out of court, disrespects the officers of the court, and refuses to follow the rules of the court or to act with decorum in the courtroom. I'd say those are sufficient grounds. The Florida Bar Association and the courts appear to think so, and they consider the complaints against him legitimate enough to act. IANAL, but I know they need to abide by some rules and that they should know those rules better than the rest of us.

Re:It gives you something just as bad...
The police don't do a whole lot to stop killers before they kill
and DRM doesn't do much to stop you after you crack it.
Wrong again. And once more. And don't look so surprised, but oops, you did it again.
Name a released (or available via warez) game with DRM that hasn't been cracked.
The existence of a crack does not imply that 100% of people who want to copy the game are going to find a crack and use it. And quite frankly I'm disgusted that you think so highly of piracy that you would think it would be.
Name a type of weapon that hasn't been used to kill someone. Name a safe that hasn't been cracked. Oh what's that, there aren't any? Well, guess we should allow people to run around killing others, and don't bother storing your money in a bank, just stuff it under your mattress, I'm sure that's just as secure.
Or alternatively, how about this: name a DRM system for software that makes the product less secure than it would be without DRM. -
music sharing - almost theft
File-sharing of copyrighted material: A creates a pattern of bits the same as one B has. A has been enriched. B has been neither damaged nor enriched. Third party C claims to have been damaged to the tune of $100,000.
B and C are the same parties, but nice try attempting to portray the **AA as "mean and bad" without appearing to demean the beloved musicians.
Some musicians sell the rights to their creations to others. Some choose to market them themselves. It does not matter — for this argument — the B and C in your example are one and the same, and B is damaged — at least some of the people, who got their music for free, would've paid for it.
Giving away and using copies of somebody else's works without permission is much closer to theft, than, for example, the right to sell pornography is to free speech. Stop blaming other people's common sense, when they disagree with you — American schools aren't that bad...

Re:Great JokesI'm in this purely for the pedantry so brushing the horror of war aside... ahem... may I ask why you used the word "democratic" here?
I would have assumed, perhaps falsely, that the invasion of any soverign country by another, whether monarchy, dictatorship, oligarchy or whatever else is inherently wrong.
One can try to justify it, of course, by saying magic words like "WMD", or "they did it first, we're just retaliating", "they're evil, we're good", "if we don't kill a few of them now many more will die later"... really the options are endless. Sometimes perhaps even justified.
Basically I'm wondering whether you believe it's OK to make fun of invasions of non-democratic countries?
While I'm bothering to post. How democratic is democratic enough... would Zimbabwe qualify for example? Technically Robert Mugabe was democratically elected. The whole beating people to death if they planned to vote for Morgan Changarai (sp?) taints the process but really it's about where the line is. Finding people willing to say that the opposition leader is homosexual (Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia.. twice!) is a less physical approach but potentially equally damaging to the democratic process.
Of course if true you could argue it is of benefit to the public to be familiar with all the facts... no doubt this is why many governments are loosening the freedom of information rules about sitting members. No wait... the other thing...
How long before this method is applied in political campaigns, if it isn't already, in the western world.
I'm going to get modded offtopic aren't I?...

Also Like Adobe & Digg Labs...
The similarity with Google Labs is the word "labs" this is about user requirements and suggestions rather than fully fledged products. Its about people suggesting improvements and then those moving into development. This means its at a much earlier part of the product development cycle than Google Labs (which starts with a beta or alpha product).
As long as we're talking about labs, there's also Adobe Labs and Digg Labs that I keep my eye on. (Funny, I don't actually read Digg, I just enjoy seeing how they visualize their data!)
While you're right that these sites aren't open to the public, I think it's mostly due to the nightmare of trying to credit people with ideas when you're making billions off these ideas months later. The community might not ... like that.
I will point out that the 'labs' concept just seems to be an indication of how these entities see future development. A similarity between Google and Mozilla is that they offer tons of developer resources on their labs sites. I don't think those two are so different from each other.
Instead of looking at these Labs as inferior, I rather give the companies a chance to show me what they think is bleeding edge and a lot of the time it's a good indicator of innovation. However you look at it, it's a good idea to keep an eye on the labs so you know what your competitor/partner is up to and get a glimpse of the future as they see it. -

Re:"Throttling"
I call bullshit on this.
The cable companies allow access to their networks based on MAC. What you are doing is possible, but you would need to call comcast and tell them that you got a new modem every time, which would look extremely suspicious. MAC addresses are also not random. So you cannot spoof it to a "random" MAC.
Your post also lacks continuity. You say that they start dropping "30-80%" of your packets every "5-10 minutes". But you also say that you only need to reset your MAC every 2 days?please go Home
You obviously don't know much about computers do you?
