Re:AppleScript
Thanks. I'll check out OSAScript. And I'll see if Automator can do what I need.
I use AppleScript mainly to read/write data in/out of applications.
For example suppose I want to transfer data, from an iWork Numbers spreadsheet, to a Safari web page. An AppleScript can read the data from the spreadsheet, and then use a "do javascript" command to send that information to a web page.
Or the AppleScript can read the contents of the spreadsheet, and write them to a
.js file, writing the contents in the form of JavaScript commands. Then the next time I display the web page, the web page can read the .js file.I might also use AppleScript to click on deeply-nested menu items. And occasionally I make it speak or listen for my commands.
But mainly I use it to send data to and from applications.
By the way, am I the only one who thinks that the character EVE (in Pixar's movie WALL-E) looks a lot like the icon for Automator?

Provide feedback to Disney
It was a bit hard to find a good place to provide feedback. Here is how I did it:
- 1. Go to https://help.disney.com/en_US/...
- 2. Select "Other"
- 3. In the field, type "Netflix"
- 4. Click the "Next" button
- 5. Click on the "Email" button
- 6. Type in your full complaint
They responded to me by basically saying they were forwarding my comment to the appropriate person.

40M Kids Sat Through Disney-Branded HOC Tutorials
"The Disney 2016 tutorial, Moana: Wayfinding with Code, will bring the Hour of Code to students around the world for Computer Science Education Week and beyond!," exclaims the Disney Hour of Code Digital Toolkit. "Since 2014, The Walt Disney Company has worked with Code.org to build Hour of Code tutorials featuring Disney characters that inspire kids of all ages to try coding. Disney and Code.org's 2014 Hour of Code tutorial featured Anna and Elsa from Frozen and in 2015 the tutorial featured Rey, BB-8, Princess Leia and R2-D2 from The Force Awakens. Since that time, over 40 million students have tried Disney coding tutorials." Like Microsoft, the Hour of Code has apparently been very good to Disney branding. In 2014, after starring in a signature Hour of Code tutorial used to "teach President Obama to code", Disney Princesses Elsa and Anna went on to dethrone tech-shamed Barbie as the most popular girls' holiday season toy.

Re:Could you possibly be more of a cliche?
> "Could you possibly be more of a cliche?"
No. The obvious has already been stated.
1. "Do you plan on protesting outside of GE and Ford?"
Yes, I'm looking into building a Tabby (https://www.osvehicle.com/tabby-info/) and live off-grid. Corporations, for the most part, are evil and should be shunned from our society.
2a. "Do you realize that the NSA is actually not the same as Apple?"
You mean NSA doesn't stand for "Naturally Sweetened Apples"?
2b. ...no company has made more of a stand against the NSA than Apple
Really? I'll bet that their "stand" has more to do with protecting profits than people? Do you work for Apple?
3. Self explanatory (this is the 21st century).
4. "..political party--pick the product you want, you don't need to march on Washington.."
Dude, it's a battery. Relax. Some of us don't want to have to send our phone back to the manufacturer to change the battery. Has nothing to do with politics. And no, I don't own an Iphone. I don't want one. For reasons already stated.
5. Ditto.
6. "It's not actually true because the TRS-80 did require a boot disk."
Your ignorance is astounding. Obviously you didn't own one.
Here is the screen that you appeared when you turned the machine on WITHOUT a boot disk:

Re:Vista
I enjoy having the CPU usage meter right on the side
In XP I run Task Manager with "Minimize on use" and "Hide when minimized" -- this puts it in the system tray with an icon that shows % utilization -- and I save the 30% cpu loss due to that handy dandy digiclock.
Vertical toolbars blow because they take up many times more screen space that bottom or top ones -- words (in English anyway) have to be displayed horizontally. No getting around it.
I think Vista will be the most hated MS OS yet. In fact I'm off to register www.VistaSucksTheMost.com this instant. -
Re:Purple Moon, John Romero, and sexist games
You also have a very unrealistic view of children, but what's far worse is that you actually have children.
Disney's advertisements aren't only aimed at the kids, but also at the parents: YOU! It sounds like you've fallen for them hook, line and sinker, when you repeat Disney's talking points like Mary Matilin on Fox News explaining why it was OK for Dick Cheney to shoot an old man in the face with a shotgun.
Here is a press release that should explain why you're such a sucker to buy into that corporate princess crap:
NEWS: The Disney Princess Brand Continues to Reign Supreme With Girls
The Disney Princess Brand Continues to Reign Supreme With Girls Disney's Beloved Heroines on Track to Achieve $2b in Retail Sales in 2004
In 2000, Disney Consumer Products brought all of Disney's beloved heroines -- Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White -- together in a comprehensive collection of fantasy-based girls' entertainment and products called the Disney Princess brand.
"In just three years, the Disney Princess brand has gone from $300 million in global retail sales to $1.3 billion in 2003, making it Disney Consumer Products' fastest growing brand from a revenue perspective," said Andy Mooney, chairman of Disney Consumer Products. "With the support of The Walt Disney Company, the Disney Princess brand will continue to cast its spell on consumers, and we expect it will reach an estimated $2 billion in retail sales in 2004."
Disney's research shows that girls don't want to be just any Princess, they want to be a Disney Princess. A Princess whose personality, dreams, favorites and friends she knows from the stories she loves. And moms embrace the brand because in a time when little girls are maturing at a much faster pace, Disney Princess merchandise lets little girls be little girls longer. The stories behind the Disney Princesses empower girls with virtues of integrity, honor, discovery, friendship and love.
"Starting with Snow White in 1937, the rich storytelling of each of Disney's fairytales has captured the hearts and minds of young girls," said Mooney. "The Disney Princess brand is a natural extension of these timeless stories and characters and enables a girl to become a part of the world of her favorite princess."
Created for girls ages 2 to 8 years of age, Disney will wave its own magic wand over the brand releasing new Disney Princess personal care products, Disney Princess Electronics, theatrical releases, home videos, apparel programs, theme park entertainment, toys, games and a variety of other great products that inspire the imagination.
Following is company-wide information showing the success and the new initiatives behind Disney Princess: [...]

Re:Is it really surprising?
Yes, it's interesting. If you find such topics boring, then perhaps you shouldn't be reading Slashdot. I'm sure you'll find reading material more entertaining and suitable for lower intelligence level at Disney.com.
Many people who read this site care about issues like this. We find it interesting to experiment with software systems, especially those which we do not have direct access to the source code of. It's fun to see how a consumer-grade application reacts to unexpected data, for instance.
He could have decompiled the application. But doing so would likely have been in violation of the licensing agreement he agreed to before using said software. You may question the legality of such agreements, but he may not have wanted to take the risk of publishing his findings. Litigation is expensive, after all.
Not only that, but it's quite difficult to decompile a program written in C, C++ or Objective-C. That's especially true when you're dealing with an optimized program. It often isn't obvious what a particular chunk of assembly code is doing, and thus is basically useless for such analysis. -
Re:Erm, link:

The law only applies to you and I
Copyright and patent laws were intended to protect someone's intellect, and to allow for works to eventually enter the public domain, ideally to benefit society as a whole once the inventer/creator has made some cash off their idea (IMHO... I'm sure that there's some
/. lawyer wannabe getting ready to challenge my definition somewhere).
But nothing really happens this way anymore it seems. Nowadays, when the public is supposed to see some benefits from something entering the public domain, the big, money hungry companies just find some greedy, two-faced politician who's willing to sell out the people who elected them for some easy cash, and they extend protections, and enact new laws to prevent people from getting what they're legally entitled to.
And it's sad actually... Do you think that when the cpoyright laws were put into place, the lawmakers were thinking planning for this to happen? If so, then why set a duration in the first place?
Actually, the fact that they did enact patent laws to protect the little guys (never mind that it's the guys with the money to twist the laws who are reaping all the protection these days), and they did set terms on copyright shows that at one time, politicians and lawmakers were there for the benefit of the people. Nowadays, it's only millionares(sp?) who get elected, largely due to they're having more money, which gives them more visibility. The laws are now so twisted and full of holes that they're totally meaningless.
And I've seen some arguments in favor of laws extending copyright, and granting new rights to content owners, wherein it's argued that the original types of copyright, and patent laws aren't meaningful anyway, as the people who wrote them couldn't have envisioned what technology would bring to the world, but I think that's fucking insane! This is essentially saying that people who were smart enough to found and develop countries, who studied law, and who developed the world in which we live had no vision, or sense of the future? That's crazy talk...
And this Nintendo thing's a great example of the problem: They made lots of money off the NES, knowing all the while that the patent laws would eventually expire, allowing anyone to build an NES machine, and now that they have (or are, as the case seems to be), they're suddenly saying "but, but, but..." as they see that people still are interested in this technology.
I think it's about time that the laws started working for the people again, and those who try to circumvent these laws should be held accountable for violating them. Copyright limits were not put into effect just so that some wealthy, never-worked-a-day-in-their-lives people, who've inherited millions from their ancestors inventions, can use some of that money to keep you and I from getting what we're entitled to.
But me ranting on my virtual soap box isn't going to change anything, and the population as a whole is too wrapped up in their reality TV, and Paris "Dog face" Hilton sexcapades to realize what they're losing out on. It's just so depressing where we as a society have let ourselves be led to. And the whole while, those passing the laws continue to claim that they're doing so for our best interests.
George Carlin said it best in last weekends HBO special (and more people should watch it, and listen to what he's saying!): "They (the politicians) don't care about you. They don't." It's up to we, the people, to dig us out of the mess that we've let others make of our legal system.
Ok... I'm done. the soapbox is free for someone else to rant on. I'm off to download all the NES Roms I can get my hands on! 8) -

Re:AutoCAD is too far up MSs back end...Maybe it's more accurate to say that most of the large scale Maya deployments are on Linux. You know, at real studios doing real work.
The proliferation of windows-first/only plugins is pretty obviously a sign of the small scale of studios using Maya on windows. If Autodesk were to drop the Linux version of Maya we'll probably be seeing a lot of the big studios, if not all of them, dropping Maya.

Re:The reason for the downturn.Fucktard here apparently lost her ability to read approximately a year ago when she became a Slashdot reader. What part of "get a fucking life" don't you understand? Even more disturbing than SpankMonkey's retarded reply is the fact that who knows how many dipshit moderators decided it was Insightful. Hint: The pretty picture in her signature does not mean she knows what she's talking about. If you would learn to fucking read, it would be painfully obvious. Now go sit in a corner and think about what you've done.

Re:ODD
First off, just because they use other tools doesn't mean they don't use PHP, dumbass.
These companies may use LAMP on some piddly internal servers, but they clearly do not run LAMP on their world-facing high-traffic portals. I didn't hand-pick these servers -- I simply used the list of companies you gave me. Not one of them uses PHP on their web site.
Second, you grabbed a completely different URL (the redirect) for Disney. My first one obviously shows that they are running a LAMP architecture.
The whole point of the www.disney.com demonstration is that disney.com doesn't server any PHP pages. It simply redirects to disney.go.com, which hosts their portal (and runs ASP). Try it yourself. ANY page you request from disney.com will be redirected to disney.go.com. (The page I requested was http://www.disney.com/ .) Netcraft just gets the server type of the redirecting server, but you and I are smart enough to know that the redirecting server doesn't actually do any heavy lifting, aren't we?
Third, check out the Zend.com customers page.
The Zend.com customer page just says that those companies use PHP somewhere. It doesn't mean they use PHP on their high-traffic sites, which is what we're discussing. Indeed, companies like JBoss claim thousands of customers, but most of them use JBoss's server internally, not on mission-critical high-volume servers. Invariably, people buy a real J2EE server for that purpose.
how the hell do you figure PHP doesn't scale?
So again, if www.disney.com doesn't actually server any pages (only serves redirects), is running on LAMP and getting millions of hits a day, how the hell do you figure that PHP scales?
And I truly am amazed at how stupid I am
So am I. You keep thinking you're right when you're so easily shown to be wrong. There are enough technical reasons for why PHP is unsuitable for high-availability highly-scalable sites to fill a book. It's merely a presentation-tier templating engine, and a poor one at that. -

The Case For Eliminating VoIPVoIP has had a short and patchy history. In fact, it has been argued by some of the Internet's most respected architects that we may be better off without it altogether!
Remember,
- VoIP requires H323 and other setuid scripts, potentially opening your network to crackers.
- The internet was simply never designed for realtime interaction, and post-hoc hacks won't make it realtime: instead the system would probably have to be redesigned from the ground up using realtime-XML.
- VoIP completely bypasses the government's anti-terrorist infrastructure, which depends on intercepting phone calls arbitrarily: it is estimated that each percentage point of calls which are transferred to VoIP will result in 600-800 American deaths per annum through terrorism

Has anyone read the act?
"intentionally induces" means intentionally aids, abets, induces, counsels, or procures, and intent may be shown by acts from which a reasonable person would find intent to induce infringement based upon all relevant information...
Nothing in this section shall enlarge or diminish the doctrines of vicarious or contributory liability...
While the title is really bogus, the act itself is only adding "inducement" as an additional illegal act to the copyright laws. It is not changing the rights that the copyright holder already has. Almost the whole discussion here has been offtopic. Does everyone here think that incitement to riot, inducement to prostitution, and other similar acts should not be illegal? It's not making copiers and VCRs illegal, it says that if you show someone how to copy something and induce them into copying it illegally, then you have done something illegal yourself.
I think the copyright laws need to change to make fair use mean something again, and make it so Mickey is finally public domain, but saying this act is some fascist, Republican plot is absurd.

"Back in the day," an OOD class I took at Georgia Tech was taught in Squeak - which was widely held to be waning in favor even then. I don't see how it's groundbreaking now.

As an added bit of trivia, I believe Squeak was so named because one of its biggest proponents is the Mouse himself. -

The copyright in the audiovisual work PHENOMENON will last nearly a century, all because of the lobbying led by its publisher.

Illegal, yes.. Imoral....?definitely it's illegal, at least under current mouse inflated copyright law.. SOMEONE still owns it.
whether it's immoral is another, mostly personal, question. as old as the internet, there has been traffic in out of print games, whether the company went under, or simply stopped production. go do a search on google for 'abandonware' or 'oldwarez'.
or go hang out on #oldwarez on EFNet, and see some of the moral degenerates who like oldwarez ;) don't worry, they don't bite.... hard. -
