Uhh...
I don't think I'd trust buying a $150,000+ item from someone who only has 10 feedback, One of them being a $24 battery.
Oh, and paypal?! I barely trust sending $150 through paypal, let alone $150,000... -
WiFi meets 1930s Radio?
Now that's a fun way to add Wi-Fi to your local coffeehouse--slip a m0n0wall Soekris and a DSL modem inside an old portable radio and put it on the countertop.
I think we'd want to have some weighted rules for judging a good "sympathetic" installation (highest first):
- If the radio works, it should continue to work (do no harm)
- As minimal damage to the original casing as possible
- The wi-fi unit is easily removed to return item to an old style radio
- Operation simple for the user (plug/unplug)
- Network indicator lights visible (through the mesh?)

P.S. For do-it-yourselfers, check out ebay's 1930's radios and NYCwireless's primer on setting up community nodes

Nixie Tubes!
If any of you really want to see retro-hobbying at it's greatest, just do a search on Ebay for Nixie tubes.
Nixie tubes were createrd in the erra before LCD displays. Basicly it's a vacuum tube with metal numbers or letters layered one after each other. When a voltage is applied to the right pin, the number glows, much like a little neon light. They were often used in test equipment and a few computers. Hobbiest now use them to make clocks and other displays. It would be neat to use them as a status moniter on a linux server for that retro-look. :-) -
SOHO stuff is a good call
I'd second the recommendations to look at SOHO stuff; my personal experience at work is with a lower-end Netscreen device that is about the size of a 4-port hub, has two Ethernet ports (trusted and untrusted), does NAT, does port forwarding, has good logs, etc, and similar devices can be found on eBay in the $50-100 range. For example, this is a similar firewall device. I'd expect other companies have similar offerings, where you get the benefits of an embedded device (lower power consumption, no noise, smaller size, etc) along with more of the features from a custom Linux or BSD box.

Nothing To See HereThis is a silly story. Many people interested in high-end audio have insisted that tubes amps are better than transistor amps all along. (although most admit that transistors are getting closer and closer all the time). So you plug your ipod into a tube amp. You can plug your ipod into any amp. Good amps sound better. If they're trying to get at the combo digital/analog audio angle as being news, why have there been dozens of tube CD players for sale for years? And many other people have normal CD players hooked up to tube amps. The Headroom sells headphone transistor & tube amps with special iPod cases. This is nothing new
Perhaps the story should have been when Apple released Apple Lossless Encoder. That's the recent iPod news that makes the iPod better for audiophiles.

Vivid-Schmivid
Just get the Asian version of the DVDs of the original series (not SE) and be done with it. Sure, the picture quality isn't as good, but Greedo doesn't shoot first (or "almost simaltaneously" or whatever he does in this new DVD version).

Re:ebay is starting to show it's true faceFrom the horse's mouth
Sellers may not charge eBay buyers an additional fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of checks, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards . .
.I wouldn't bid on an auction that advertised such a charge, and if I had bid on one and had been told to "send a money order or shut up," I'd neg the seller and report him to eBay. I have also reported auctions that advertise the illegal surcharge and seen them pulled.

Re:5GB Microdrive on eBay: $96I would assume you were looking at this auction: here.
This drive is PC Card sized, which is not usable in any modern consumer digital camera. The seller was simply keyword spamming. "Microdrive" is actually a marketing name created by IBM (and then sold to Hitachi) for a hard drive with a CompactFlash interface, so neither this auction nor the Seagate drive can be legally called a Microdrive.

Or...
You go buy an M100 with an ITPS for ignition control. Then you go download MediaEngine or another interface of your choice at MP3car.com. Finally, go buy your Lilliput 7" TFT touchscreen on eBay.
If you're into self installs and whatnot this gives you a lot more flexibility at less cost. -

Re:Wal-Mart expires these cards when?
People who pull off these scams aren't interested in most goods - they want cash. I suppose that the easiest method is to buy a case or 10 of cigarettes or to try to return a high-dollar item. The former can be sold almost anywhere and the latter will give the thief cash, but only after a second pass at the Wal Mart chain. The latter is a high-risk approach and it isn't consistent with an ongoing breach...
Those ways are effective. Here's another:

bleh
Or buy a tivo for 200.
So why is this MythTv box worth 400 more? Is this what "free" costs? Granted, I wouldn't consider the Microsoft offering either. Unless you consider a 100 dollar xbox running XBMC or gentoox a Microsoft product. But then, you get no video encoding and less than stellar video playback.
Whatever. It's cool having a multi function device, but sometimes paying (in this case, less) for specialization is good. -

Re:long time coming
would that be a tablet pc, from Microsoft
No, he said Gateway, and meant it. Gateway sold these neat little all-in-one LCD machines in the late 90s, starting not long after the original iMac came up, as the Profile series.
It looks like you can get some of the original Gateway Profile computers (15" lcd / 500mhz cpu / 128mb ram / 10gb hard drive) for around $300 on eBay now.
I remember playing with one in a Gateway store back in 1998 or so, and thinking that this was a really cool idea, but it was something like $2500, as I recall (I can't find any links about dates or prices now, but it was in that range), and as a student I just couldn't afford that.
(That and, now that I think about it, I wanted something that I'd be able to run BeOS on, and didn't think I could on these Gateway all-in-one machines -- good thing I was betting on the BeOS horse, eh? Oh well...).
But yeah, my first thought when seeing the new iMac was that Apple was ripping off the Gateway design. The Apple one was much nicer to be sure, but the basic form factor -- which predates the current notion of a tablet PC by several years -- is more or less exactly how Gateway had set up their original Profile PCs five years or more ago.

this is the real street knowledge
This is very true. Check eBay for the resell prices of even the dog products that weren't big sellers-- the Apple Cube, for example. You can sell your three-year-old Cube for a quarter of the cost of this new iMac. I don't see anyone getting more than $150 for a three-year-old Dell.

Re:Unlikely
> Unfortunately, I think they've pretty much sold out the previous generation iMacs
They may have, but that doesn't mean you can't buy one of the 73 iMac G4's for sale on eBay.
> I wish they'd kept a 15" model at $999. This lack of low end is Apple's greatest problem with consumers.
You're complaining about a lack of a low-end 15" $999 machine, when they sell a low-end 17" machine for $799? Or $749 with an educational discount.
Although I would agree that price is still a problem with Apple, since low-end these days is closer to $300 for PC's. Yes, those PC's are much lower-end than the $799 eMac, but they still meet the needs of a lot of people. I'd love to see a low-end headless Apple box for more like $400, for geeks & such to use to play with OS-X, but that's just not the market Apple's going for, unfortunately. -

Re:No bids?
There is at least one desperate person out there...
Check this auction -
Going for $400? I think not.
Just because the price is set at $400 doesn't mean they are going for that price. They will most likely not sell for such high of a price. In fact, not a single bid has been placed on the given auction as of yet. So while the seller may be asking for $400, if no one is willing to pay that, he might as well sell it for a billion dollars.
-
Re:No bids?A simple search shows that they're going for about $100-$150.
But who knows after Slashdot has its effect.

Why not go with SGI?
Okay, here's what I don't get. We are going with 96 procs that run at what speed? Knowing Transmeta, (partners with VIA right), why would anyone whant a cluster of those procs? Not the Web Browser, no.
The "browser" of today is designed to handle a number of simple interactive tasks. Web forms and Flash and JavaScript and so on are all there for one reason: to take the Web from being a set of hyperlinked documents to being a set of zero install cost applications.
Using just a browser, you can participate in a forum, you can play games, you can read email , go shopping or bid in an auction. Are those Web pages, or are those applications delivered via a browser?
Unfortunately, Internet Explorer is holding us all back. It's got us stuck in a technology rut, where existing standards are corrupted and future standards are stillborn. Progress cannot be made, and we're left with the cruft of the last browser war. Web developers want the new features of WebForms 2.0, XHTML, XSLT, and CSS, but have to target the current user base: IE5/6. Users, of course, never see anything but what the web developers produce, and that works fine in IE5/6. It's a lock-in.
So what you're asking here is impossible. The web browser is already an applications platform, and there are already hundreds of thousands of applications targetting that platform. You used one when you posted your comment, but I didn't see you complain, or insist that slashdot isn't a web site. New standards are an evolution, not a revolution. We have Web applications today, but the Web apps of tomorrow could be so very much better, if only Microsoft weren't in the way.
