Re:Wha?

How is an incorrect thought informative? Doom 3 has multiplayer. This has been known for almost a year now. -
Re:shelf space
The solution for the gaming industry: go open source. Work with each other, instead of reinventing the wheel with every little detail. Provide game networks at low cost. It will eliminate piracy (nothing to pirate when the source is available), and you will make money on subscription.
So the business model is
1. Go open source
2. ???
3. Profit!
Game developers already work together, thats why games license other game engines, the reason we have halflife is because they had access to the quake engine.
The problem if you go open source is that everybody will be able to setup their own networks and refuse to pay. Also, having a flexible pay system for subscriptions doesn't make much sense. Its not like the server goes down if you don't play. Whether you play 500 hours or 5 hours, the cost to run the server isn't going to change much.
The last game I bought was Age of Kings in what, 2000?
You do know game prices go down over time? You don't have to pay $60 when its released. Game companies release at $40-60 price range to maximize profits, they know there is a certain percentage of people that will buy at that price, then they cut the price later to get the money from another percentage of people, and so on.
Another piece of advice: make games that are cinematographically spectacular, yes, but more than that, make games with good gameplay.
[sarcasm]On another note, Hollywood should make more movies that are as visually spectacular, yet have very deep and thought provoking themes.[/sarcasm] -
About the Game
I guess something should be said about the game, since it didn't get a lot of press when it was released in 2001: it's a unique action/adventure title for PS2 that got great reviews (91% average), and was nominated for or won a bunch of awards, but didn't sell very well. It's still available, though getting harder to find.

Why do we even buy consoles?
While the physical characteristics of a portable console are certainly important, what about the reason one buys a console (ie, games)? DS's release list is pretty impressive, but the PSP has one game that, I'm sure, some will buy a PSP just to witness: Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. From what I've heard, it's a follow-up to Final Fantasy VII, and from what I've seen, it's going to be amazing. Then, there's Metal Gear Acid. I'm not sure about the premise on this one, but it's the Metal Gear name that I'm sure will draw some in.

Skeptical
I'm always skeptical about release dates, but at least two stores are consistent this time. EB Games has the release date for Doom III listed as August 3 as well, but the strategy guide comes out on July 10. You can spend three weeks reading up on the game and then kick ass at it!

" I don't doubt that. But is it significant enough to warrant sales suddenly doubling? I was not sure about that, and so therefore in my original post I ruminated on the psychological devices that would cause the average shopper to perceive the PS2 as dirt-cheap."
Actually, yes - especially considering that the price drop had been hinted at so before the price drop went into effect, sales would have dropped. It's easier to double sales once sales drop off.

Again, you missed the point completely. Anyone who has not bought a console, specifically a PS2 - the best selling console for this hardware generation, is not a very hardcore gamer. Surprise!Even if Nintendo were to rerelease it for, I dunno, the GBA or something--hell, they might have already done this--how well would it actually do?
It will be in stores on the 3rd.
As for how well it will do, the Super Mario series for GBA still sells very well, so who knows.

Once again American has shown itself to be the cheat beatingest #1 console maker! USA USA USA! HAHA! w00t! -
Shrug - Been there, done that.
So I guess this is impressive, especially if it's taken more as a contribution to the demoscene than to gaming. But what I think is far more impressive is that a game like Starflight which included hundreds of planets, dozens and dozens of hours of gameplay, an equal number of conversations and text and hundreds of objects, all fit into 2 5 1/4 disks (360K x 2). In 1986. And while exceptional, Starflight is merely representative of the amount of efficient coding that had to go into early game creation. Kkrieger, and more so older classics like Starflight, should serve as examples to modern developers who seem to be bloating their code.

Yes. That's THREE (3!) games (and one strategy guide to a game they no longer sell).

No, its because its Nintendo that it can't be vastly different than the original.
Their new motto is: Since we are running out of new ways to sell you the same old crap, can we literally just resell you the same old crap? -
Re:Yeah, its sounds like standard Sony marketing"All in One" devices are usually cheaper, and in the N-gage case you are also paying extra so you don't have ro carry around an extra thing to play games. The N-Gage is now comparable to a GB SP and a cell-phone, EB is selling a N-Gage bundle for $200. Plus, you get to play online games.
Game console features overlap with a DVR's features enough to say you will probably get a PS3 w/DVR cheaper than a PS3 + TIVO. TIVO's are selling for $150 and up with a $300 activation fee right now. The artical says the PS3 w/DVR will probably be $600 more than the PS3 which is about the cost of a middle of the line TIVO and far less than a TIVO w/ DVD-burner.

Re:What I'd like to see...
...are just lower prices for games, especially new releases.
US $50 is simply too much for a new PS2 game.
Argh, how does a comment like this get modded "insightful"?
First of all, N64 games listed at $69.99-$79.99 when the system was first released. Prior to that, Sega Genesis games sold for up to $80 (Phantasy Star IV being an example). The original Warcraft on PC had an MSRP over $50 (check this month's 10th Anniversary PC Gamer for confirmation). Going back further, most Atari 2600 titles retailed for $29.99 - in 1977. And that price went up over time with inflation, not down.
Secondly, how many games need to be below $50 before people stop complaining about game prices? And that's not even counting brand new releases like Destruction Derby Arenas, which is selling for $20 on day one of release. There are quite a few games that fit that description these days.
If you're complaining about game prices, you either a) know nothing about video game history and/or economics, or b) are shopping at all the wrong places. -
Offtopic: Re:Still too much
You can get a preowned Dreamcast (DC) at EBGames for $15 at a physical store or $19 online. Scope out DCEmulation for tons of homebrew ports and games (Mame, other emu's, mp3 player, divx player and many others) or fire up alt.binaries.cd.image.dreamcast for some commercial rips and work released by others. It even runs Linux (although a little dated) to a VGA monitor with KB support. The DC does not require any "chips" or internal hacks to run anything and has an internal modem.
Even further offtopic but I use my DC often, mostly for NES emulation and simply playing the games I've bought for it over the years. -

Finding games that take advantage of these devices may be the tricky feat. My point was merely that such devices did exist to mimic the PC experience with a console.

Re:Which version will you pick up?
-
Re:Duh.
Furthermore, there are plenty of "total conversions" of existing video games that involve completely new models of everything.
Yes, let me list a few of the more memorable ones:
* Counter Strike - the most popular mod ever, a counter-terrorism mod ("modification") for the game Half-Life. The developers are now working at Valve Software, having released several commercial versions. Their follow up "Counter Strike - Condition Zero" is due on shelves next month.
* Desert Combat - the premier mod for Battlefield 1942, voted best game mod of 2003 and 2002 by Gamespy. The team (Trauma Studios) just signed a contract worth $.5 million with DICE to develop a commercial project for a future Battlefield product.
* Natural Selection - the #2 Half-Life mod, the Natural Selection team has formed their own studio and are looking for publishers to take Natural Selection to retail.
* Team Fortress - the ancient Quake then Half-Life mod who's employment by Valve meant that TF1 was included with the official Half-Life patch. This project spawned the now infamous (for the wrong reasons) Team Fortress 2.
as open source provides better tools engines and better graphics tools
I don't see that happening. Commercial games typically take 18 months to complete. An open source project will take longer than that if it's worth playing. I can't see unpaid virtual teams sticking together for that long - it's too much effort for too little reward.
And games are much more of an artistic endeavour than a purely technical challenge of writing an operating system where there's often a provable "best way" of doing something. Operating systems are a means to an end - games exist only for the sake of the game, hence everyone wants things to work their way. Expect infighting, splinter groups and a lot of projects not getting finished.
Remember, open-source software is an anomaly in the world of commerce. As a rule, nobody provides work or services for free - at least, no work or services that you'd actually want. -

Re:Disillusionment with current crop of games
I don't think the situation is as gloomy as it may seem. Some game companies are, albeit slowly, realizing that they will have to base their games on something other than military strategy, giving us a violent heroic character to play, or letting us kill our friends.
Don't get me wrong. The next innovative games are not entirely new. They are just based on different systems and events that technology advancements allow us to explore more deeply. Two examples of innovative, yet-not are Republic: The Revolution and The Sims. Both systems (politics and real life) have been done before. They just haven't been done since the days of CGA monitors. -

Dreamcast
Let me get this straight, are you seriously suggesting that being first to market now is a disadvantage? That coming out first is being 1 year behind?
It's counterintutitive, but it does make anecdotal sense. Think about the Dreamcast, first to market, less sophisticated than (at least, poorer graphics than) the PS2, GC, or XBox, and ultimately, the first to go.
Really sad, since the Dreamcast was relatively DRM-less, and it can not only run Linux "out of the box" (by the way, someone should port Knoppix to...), but even after Sega has dropped support for the console, it supports a healthy homebrew community. I use it for MAME, etc. on my TV with actual game controllers. (Also, you can pick a used Dreamcast up at Electronic Botique for $19.99 these days...) -
This is what happens
This is what happens when you take a already bad game and make a clone of it. Everyone who has seen Multiplicity should know this by now =)

RetroCON PS2 gamepad
This gamepad is probably my favorite. It's a little harder to use than the standard PS2 Dual Shock controller, but the retro value more than makes up for it.
Along with the PS2 -> USB adaptor and a NES PC (although I had built mine before I ever heard of this gent), it's almost like having a real NES, and every game ever made to play on it. =D
Disclaimer: I do actually own all of these products. Not shilling. -
Re:Good to see someone "gets it"
Uh, what? Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is still going for $50. That's the same price it was at release.

Re:sorry ID. Single player games just dont swing.
I was personally disappointed with Quake 3, as it's not great as a 1st person... Multiplayer games are fine in geekland where you do have a LAN set up and a bunch of buddies sitting there waiting to do something, but in the real world, single player games do still make more sense for most casual game users.
...However, the developer has stated previously that it has focused most of its efforts on Doom 3's single-player game... -
7/14/04 according to EB games
According to this link, it ships on 7/14/2004. Could be a stale date, I guess?

Re:So what?
For you Americans out there in cyberland, Duke Nukem Forever will ship on 1 December 2005. Oh wait, maybe it's 14 November 2004.
Just be glad you don't live in New Zealand, where it won't ship until 31 December 2006 .
Sincerely,
