Re:Who cares about race and gender?
You are completely missing the points.
1. Quantity != Quality.
McDonald's serves BILLIONS. Does that mean they serve gourmet food? No, just cheap, popular, crap.
2. Avatar was a formulaic, rip-off of "Dances with Wolves" in space, which Cameron even admitted.
Yes, exactly, it is very much like that. You see the same theme in "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" and also "The Emerald Forest," which maybe thematically isn't that connected but it did have that clash of civilizations or of cultures. That was another reference point for me. There was some beautiful stuff in that film. I just gathered all this stuff in and then you look at it through the lens of science fiction and it comes out looking very different but is still recognizable in a universal story way. It's almost comfortable for the audience â" "I know what kind of tale this is." They're not just sitting there scratching their heads, they're enjoying it and being taken along. And we still have turns and surprises in it, too, things you don't see coming. But the idea that you feel like you are in a classic story, a story that could have been shaped by Rudyard Kipling or Edgar Rice Burroughs.
"Going native" is not a new thing. i.e. Pocahontas and Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest which shares themes with Avatar has been done for ages, and will continue to be done in the future.
The GP is just pointing out he found Avatar far too derivative -- probably because he remembers these other movies.
Personally, I'm still going to enjoy the visuals of Avatar on my BluRay regardless of how formulaic and copy-cat it was. But I'm also not going to bury my head in the sand saying it was "original". I will recognize that it snuck in the out-of-body experience (OBE) and consciousness transference in a accessible way. The joke about unobtanium was a good social commentary and parody of how we have become dependent on oil. Avatar has some deeper themes if one so wishes to pursue:
* Avatar: A Multi-Dimensional Pop Parable for Ascension
* The Theology of AvatarWas Avatar well executed? Yup.
Was Avatar original? Nope.
Was Avatar good? Good is relative to what the view has already seen.
WHY was Avatar popular? Ah, now THIS is probably the better question to ask but that is a discussion for another day. -
History of harmful nutritional guidelines
To start with: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/new...
"Thirty years of official health advice urging people to adopt low-fat diets and to lower their cholesterol is having "disastrous health consequences," a leading obesity charity warned yesterday. "Eating fat does not make you fat," argues a new report by the National Obesity Forum (NOF) and the Public Health Collaboration, as they demanded a major overhaul of official dietary guidelines. ... Promoting low-fat foods is perhaps the biggest mistake in modern medical history... The report says the low-fat and low-cholesterol message, which has been official policy in the UK since 1983, was based on "flawed science" and had resulted in an increased consumption of junk food and carbohydrates. The document also accuses major public health bodies of colluding with the food industry, said the misplaced focus meant Britain was failing to address an obesity crisis which is costing the NHS £6 billion a year."See also, for more details: http://drhyman.com/blog/2016/0...
The history is even more complex. A more diverse "basic seven" was replaced by a "basic four" food groups including through industry industry lobbying, especially by the dairy industry, where "milk" and "meat" became half of the groups and the dairy industry supplying printed materials for schools:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...Note that most people on the planet are lactose intolerant and pushing milk on many children even in the USA via school lunch programs and dairy industry advertising is causing them health issues. Dairy may have been a better food decades ago before so much recent alteration like the widespread use of growth hormones and antibiotics. Animal fats tend to have other risks associated with them, like too much protein and a concentration of carcinogens moving up the food chain. That said, dairy products can make sense in moderation for some people and dairy farming can be a good use of some grazing land.
They key point is that the idea of a diverse diet including a lot of fresh vegetables was being narrowed to what could be most profitably sold by big agribusiness, which for decades was mostly about dairy, meat, and processed grains.

"In December 1999, the PCRM filed suit against the USDA, claiming the department unfairly promotes the special interests of the meat and dairy industries through its official dietary guidelines and the Food Pyramid. Six of the eleven members assigned to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee were demonstrated to have financial ties to meat, dairy, and egg interests. Prior to the suit, which the PCRM won in December 2000, the USDA had refused to disclose such conflicts of interest to the general public."From lobbying, food subsidies in the USA are completely inverted compared to the (not that great) food pyramid which explains why a salad costs more than a big mac:

Re:Golden age of remakes maybe
> Avatar came out in 2009, 8 years ago. You could argue there are some derivative ideas in it (as you could argue for any other work of fiction these days), but it was not a remake, not a sequel/prequel, and not a spin-off.
Avatar was a 100% remake of "Dances with Wolves" -- and I'm saying that as someone who bought the BluRay the instant it was available AND The Ultimate Fan's Guide to Avatar
You might enjoy these reads:
* Avatar: A Multi-Dimensional Pop Parable for Ascension
* The Theology of AvatarWhat makes Avatar so good is that it is layered -- you have dumb action at the lowest level and interesting perspective/philosophy at the top. It brings the Out-Body-Experience to the forefront of mass consciousness. It hinted that plants were conscious. Lots of interesting questions for the layman to think about.

Re:How is a big crumple zone bad?
I had a 1994 Saturn that they claimed would do this (was never in an accident, so didn't actually test it). One of my friends was disappointed to hear this after bragging that their 'exclusive' (my emphasis) fancy German sports car (2005?) did this. Last time I looked for a new car (2003) every model I checked claimed this feature. Thought this might be self selecting as I only looked at models at the top of the IIHS list. A quick Google search, however, turned up this article:
12 Important Safety Features On Our Cars We Don't Think About, look at #3-Breakaway Motor Mounts. Also note that #1 is Crumple Zones.

Re:The nature of financial products
Great post, to me financial innovation is defined as "when one or more parties take advantage of legal edge-cases (loopholes) to their benefit". This happens a lot in the insurance industry.
Now to nit-pick, but with a comedic approach...
You said: "One cannot eat gold, wear it, drink it, shelter under it, use it to bind wounds or cure ailments."
* Eat Gold - Gold flaked ice cream: http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2011-08-05/world/35270313_1_ice-cream-iranians-oil-windfall
* Wear Gold - Seriously, this is extremely common...
* Drink Gold: Goldschläger
* Shelter Under Gold: http://www.barnettassociates.net/a-house-made-of-gold-where-to-see-it/
* Bind Wounds or Cure Ailments (medical use in general): http://ezinearticles.com/?Medical-Uses-of-Gold&id=3234400Yeah, they are mostly edge cases, but searching for them was fun...
Thanks again for the post, it was well spoken and I don't have karma at this time.

Re:It might be true but
And I'm going to go ahead and call bullshit on your anecdote, sorry.
The whole "x is a diuretic and makes you thirstier than before you drank it" is patent nonsense.
http://ezinearticles.com/?Beer:-Pros-and-Cons&id=240782
Beer is 98% Water, but Still a Diuretic
Although 98% water, beer is a diuretic because it contains alcohol. That means you should not drink too much and never replace water with beer. To avoid headaches and hangovers caused by dehydration you should always have a glass of water between each glass of alcohol you drink.
As to the health effects of drinking nothing but beer, you are aware that early travelers had nothing but beer to drink for the majority of their sea voyages, right?
Utter bullshit. Even in the rum days a shot of 'grog', heavily watered rum, was a treat.

Privacy-Nuts?
Facebook has reached a level where the user base is roughly estimated to cover around 37% of the total world population and along with this huge user base, the fake user base has risen to 27% of the total Facebook users. In other words, it means that if you get 10 friendship requests a day, then out of that 10 only 7 or 8 are real and the rest are fake (Nyberg, 2010).

Re:The war on drugs is a failure too... so?
Sure thing friend, here you go. Now this is a review about a documentary covering the Mena CIA drug trade, but I'm sure if you hit the torrents you can find the original source. I know it was pretty common knowledge amongst the cops and my friends working in the military, and it especially pissed off the cops as it caused a shitload of high quality coke to flood the market causing ODs all over the place.
But hell I don't need documentary to tell me what's what, I see it every week. My old building is right in the middle, with the good side of town on the left, bad side on the right. I can set my watch by the cop going down the street to a house about 6 blocks from here. Why? Because he is picking up his payoff from MR Dope Dealer, that's why. hell I've watched as they counted the money in the parking lot, they don't exactly hide that shit. Traveling with a little band all over the south I see the same thing all along the "meth highway" as it is called, pretty common knowledge.
You think the gov would have ANY problem actually find the crooked cops? Hell they live like Tony Montana! Nope the simple fact is they don't give a fuck as you need a way to keep those masses of poor in line, and drugs work great for that. I promise you any place where the peasants are starting to get unruly a flood of cheap drugs will blanket the entire market. It is just an easy way to control, and also to raise money for nasty shit they don't want on the books. Don't delude yourself, we've pretty much been the bad guys since the end of WWII.

generic; prior usage
The term "application shop" was used for Symbian's shop for quite a while before Apple appeared with its iPhone, "shop" being a simple translation of the US English "store". And "app" has been a generic abbreviation for "application" at least since the late '80s on Acorn's RISC OS, newsgroup comp.sys.acorn.apps being proposed in early 1995.
You can argue that translations are irrelevant but this is not always so across the world. Regardless, it is ethically questionable to suggest that a generic phrase should become a trademark just because a word has been translated to another dialect of English.
What is more, the term "app store" is clearly descriptive and non-distinctive as far as UK registration eligibility goes.

In fact any carbon based source can be used to make oil. The South African's got pretty good at making their own during apartheid when they faced boycott's and couldn't buy what they need. The modern process is called thermal depolymerization with one proof of concept plant using turkey waste to make oil.

Re:Keep them kids in line
And there are more studies that point to the contrary. In fact, there are more parents who spank than not. 50 years ago almost every child was spanked and, by all accounts, are still not as aggressive as children today. Your studies are full of shit and so are you.
In a longitudinal study of 168 white, middle-class families, Diana Baumrind and Elizabeth Owens, psychologists at the University of California, Berkeley, found that occasional mild spanking does not harm a child's social and emotional development.
Similarly, after reviewing 38 studies of spanking, Robert Larzelere, a psychologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, concluded that in children under 7, nonabusive spanking reduced misbehavior without harmful effects. Not only does spanking work, Larzelere says, but it also reinforces milder forms of discipline, so that children are more apt to respond without spanking the next time.
Tips for successful spanking: http://ezinearticles.com/?Is-Child-Spanking-OK?&id=1023055
Suck a dick you ignorant fool. If you don't discipline your own kids, some day someone else will (and it won't be in a way you find acceptable).

Re:lol
I have an Aunt that worked at walmart as a checker for most of her life. She was a single mom and that job bought her a house and helped her raise 5 children (father was a deadbeat) then Walmart paid, in full, the entire college tuition of her eldest daughter through a program walmart has.
I can name numerous companies who have employed plenty of people for their lifetime, and offered a few perks as well. That doesn't change the fact that they're a crappy place to work, and pay about half the market rate...
If you don't want to buy Chinese made crap, then don't Walmarts selling what people want to buy.
You could say the same about street merchants and the like. Wal-marts scams are only slightly less obvious. And make no mistake, Wal-mart creates the demand when they advertise some dirt cheap junk (eg.) TV, pretending it's going to even work decently on day 1 (like all the other TVs).
And what does Walmart get out of selling you junk? Well, they buy that TV for $10, and sell it to you for $45, making a killing, rather than just a reasonable profit margin on those decent quality $50 TVs.
And no, this isn't a secret. Check out Frontline's story on Wal-mart for several real examples of exactly that.
We all know cellular plans are ridiculously over priced...
I don't know that, but then again, I've been paying $50/mo for unlimited everything for years now and never gave it a second thought.
look at any other country in the world and it's obvious.
Okay! Let's look at Canada:
http://www.tomharriscellular.ca/cellphone-smartphone-plans-bc-ab?g=2Oh well. Maybe the UK:
http://www.compareplans.co.uk/vodafone.htmNo? How about Australia:
http://ezinearticles.com/?Mobile-Cell-Phone-Cap-Plans---Optus-Business-Australia&id=937751Hmm. I seem to have run out of large English-speaking countries. You'll have to help me out here, because I'me not finding these amazing deals you speak of.
Walmart comes in and not only undercuts everyone else, they undercut them to the point it makes the other carriers look like idiots.
The fact that you're unaware of several nice cheap cell phone plans doesn't make "everyone else" "look like idiots"... Just you. It is, however, a testament to the power of advertising, that you'll go give some big name twice as much money for nothing special, rather than seek out the cheaper options...
And just like every other market they enter, this doesnt just mean walmart shoppers get lower prices, it means all the other carriers will have to drop their prices as well to prevent their customers from leaving in droves.
Right. I just LOVE the fact that Levi's Jeans were made in the USA for a century or so, right up until they went into business with Wal-mart, then outsourced all their operations to 3rd world countries so that they could provide the kinds of prices Wal-mart demanded, and a similarly reduced quality, which then infected every other retailer... THANKS WAL-MART!

RE: when do we move?
Do you mean "When do we move to Japan?" or "When shall we need to lift a finger again?"
For the former, well, I don't speak or read Japanese, so I don't think it would work out very well for me unless the English translations of the user manuals are really good. I don't think I want a robot that I don't know how to turn off (or, in some cases, how to turn on).
As for the latter, well, I still enjoy doing things myself, and plan to get off the couch some time in the next hour or so.

Re:Judge's career
IANAL, but what will probably happen is this: the $11 million will be set aside regarding this particular defendant, but since they never responded to the suit they'll pay the court costs and some few hundred dollars fine. Then the lawyer for the plaintiff will pay a small fine for filing an improper suit and will file a motion to replace the defendant with the proper defendant. Then the proper defendant will actually show up to court, and a civil trial will actually get under way. That is, if the court doesn't dismiss the case with prejudice for the lawyer being this sloppy in the first place.
In Illinois and Missouri, it is necessary to argue by motion or oral argument at the court that improper defendants be dismissed and proper parties be named. A civil court isn't a criminal court. If you've been summoned to court as a defendant and don't show up, many judges will automatically give the plaintiff default judgement against the defendant. I imagine most other US states have similar rules of the court. In Illinois, a default judgement can be set aside if a successful motion is filed within 30 days of the judgement.
AAMOF, if you fail to appear for a criminal proceeding as a defendant, you may get a bench warrant for your immediate arrest and even be charged (and maybe later found guilty) of an additional crime (FTA for criminal hearings and trials being an actual crime). I've seen judges just let people slide or just pay a small fine if they appear after a first FTA if the initial crime was a minor matter.
e-zine article on FTA
Illinois Pro Bono page on civil actionsI keep referring to Illinois because that's where I live and so it's the jurisdiction that most interests me and is most relevant to me. Your jurisdiction may be different. The jurisdiction for the lawsuit in question is definitely different.
Consult a lawyer if you really need legal advice, but the company that got incorrectly served should be able to get out of the big judgment easily enough.

Re:WiFi at home?
Agreed. The rf spectrum is at full capacity and signals at every frequency are being constantly broadcast. WiFi only represents a fraction of this and it is ridiculous to link the symptoms of these children to it. It might be interesting to build a Faraday cage around the schools and see if symptoms go away.
Commercial FM broadcast signals are usually the worse.

Re:Women...
I would propose the theory that women have become more aggressive because they have to in order to protect themselves against not only an aggressive man, but other women. When no one will step in to help, the "weak" (physically less stronger, whether male, female, elderly, etc.) either have to fight or die. Very few people will step in to help someone. They tend to turn their back and say, "Not my problem."
It has within the past decades become OK for girls to not only protect themselves, but become bullies. Of course there have always been bullies of both sexes, but we see more and more young girls duking it out like sailors in a drunken brawl. Everyone just stands around and films it then posts it on YouTube. It's okay for people to get into a bitch slap on the daytime TV shows. (I've no doubt these people are actors and this is set up, but it simply enforces that it's acceptable to lay hands on someone just because you're pissed off or you're "disrespected.")
I've got to wonder about "scientists" who want to watch mice fighting. What scientific value does this have and how is it any different from cock-fighting or dog fights? Why don't they just go on the street and watch real humans in crowded urban areas or how people act watching a cage match fight? You can put two beta fish together and they'll always fight--why...because they come from a land where they live in small bodies of water, marsh areas (which is why they can also jump out of the bowl--they have to be able to hop to the next puddle.) It's for purely territorial survival reasons that they fight other fish. I expect it's the same for the mice too.

Re:This explains the gritweed/killer weed.
It's not even close. An estimated 440,000 smoking-related deaths per year in the US. Drunk driving - 25,000 deaths although admittedly another 70,000 seriously injured.
Now when it comes to domestic violence, there's over 500,000 incidents per year, but only a small fraction of that are alcohol-related, or result in death (2000-4000). Not trying to excuse that in the least bit BTW, domestic violence is despicable. However, while alcohol often is a catalyst in domestic violence, the relationship is usually already seriously dysfunctional.
28,000 annual deaths for liver failure. I doubt the number of deaths from purely alcohol-related diabetes would be significantly higher.
Oh, you were trolling? Never mind, carry on. I agree with you that banning smoking is stupid - making social pariahs of smokers has worked far better than any War on X. The only thing more stupid would have to be the 2-bit satire in your post.

http://www.technologyreview.com/computing/22332/?a=fIt has 40-50 hours battery life, so yes, it is reasonable to consider this as an e-reader (as opposed to most handheld devices that only have a few hours of battery life).
I found this with a trivial Google search. Although it's sad that from reading Slashdot, I'd have no idea of it's release (I can't find any stories for it?), yet for the Apple iVaporware, we've already had endless stories about just rumours, and if the thing is actually ever released, no doubt we'll get daily stories on it like Apple's phone. Bottom line - this site is good for Apple rumours, but don't rely on it for "news for nerds", or geek stuff that matters in general.
Of course, I predict that you will redefine the category so that it doesn't include this device, but makes Apple "first".
