My letter to the editor on the subject
(copy and paste follows -- see url at top for original article)
--
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1841351, 00.html
First correction: "BitTorrent can be used legally and illegally, but
it is possible using the software to find films and television
programmes"
No. Bittorrent is a transfer method like http or ftp. It has 0
searching capabilities. Bittorrent is FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT from
Kazaa / Grokster / Etc.
Let me explain. Bittorrent alone is not a downloading tool. It is a
downloading method. In order to distribute files by Bittorrent, a
connection file is created. That connection file can be used by a
Bittorrent client to download (and upload) the content file in much
the same way as a URL can be used to download content. Now, to
download the file, a client program is used. The client program is
similar to an FTP program except that it uses the bittorrent download
method rather then the ftp method.
Now, you'll note that there isn't any searching mentioned anywhere
above. That's because there is NO SEARCHING in bittorent. It's a
download method, NOT a p2p program. To repeat, bittorrent is a
METHOD, NOT A PROGRAM.
So how do people download things with bittorrent? Similar to
finding a URL through google or an indexed directory such as Tucows,
there are sites that have indexes of bittorrent connection files.
(i.e. http://www.filerush.com/ These sites are NOT connected in any
manner to bittorent -- they are simply index sites for the bittorrent
connection files.
A user can connect to one of these index sites and search that site
for the connection files. However, it should be noted that the user
is searching the index site and NOT some imaginary "bittorrent
network" (because there is no such thing!).
Which brings us to error number 2:
"But it has proved harder to shut down its successors, such as
Grokster, and now BitTorrent, because they are networks that do not
have a central database of illegal files."
Bittorrent CANNOT have a central database BECAUSE IT IS NOT A
NETWORK. It is a TRANSFER METHOD. However, there IS a database of
illegal download files. That database is... THE INDEXING SITE! Yes
that is correct, there IS a central point. And music and movie (and
software) conglomerates DO attempt to shut down these sites.
(Remember hearing about www.suprnova.org? That's why the popular
bittorent index sites are hosted in countries that do not view LINKING
to copyright materials as illegal.
The reason Brian Cohen will not be sued is because he has done
nothing wrong. He hasn't created a network where files are being
distributed. He has only created the transfer method. The only
"network" is the various indexing sites and THOSE will be targetted. -

I saw this a few days ago. It sure seems like it'd be a lot of fun to play, but as a Mac user I'll never know. Back to UT2004 vehicle maps, I guess. "Road Rage!"

Re:PLEASE PLEASE
and we know there is a great demand for game related content (Videos, Mods, Patches, Etc) Since that market is being overloaded by a not so nice company or two; Why doesn't someone make a Torrent site for all of it?
A great idea. You could even call it FileRush.com, for example.
However, note that placing some game demos on torrents is a technical violation of copyright laws. Although the idea of game demos is that they are widely distributed to everyone, often the lawyers slap the same licenses on them as for every other proprietary release. Unfortunately, just because you got a download for free doesn't give you permission to distribute it to others for the same cost. Maybe it should, but it doesn't. -

Re:Upside of BitTorrent
You like posting the same thing over, huh?
I have no idea why people think its mostly movies and songs going across bittorrent. That makes no sense as bittorrent is not anonymous in the least, and requires a central server.
It is BECAUSE BitTorrent is non-anonymous that they can TELL what most of the files are. If you personally don't look at the illegal stuff, it doesn't stop existing.
Patch releases, shareware games, movie trailers, all perfectly legal and easily found on bittorrent. Stuff you used to need an account on fileplanet or some such to get.
That is also frequently illegal, but only technically. For example, many of the game demos on Filerush are illegal copyright infringements. Just because someone gave you a demo for free doesn't make it legal for you to give copies to all your friends. -
Speedy
BitTorrent search however proves with first tests [that it is] as...Google...fast.
So fast that the browser times out on a search for "mozilla". Hopefully they'll get those kinks worked out soon. :-/
Bandwidth generously provided by Hot or Not
That explains everything. ;-)
Will he get sued?
I still think that anyone trying to sue Bittorrent or a generic search engine would have a hard time of it. Bittorrent has so many legal uses that it just isn't funny. Here's some example of legal torrents:
Privateer Remake
OpenOffice
Star Trek: New Voyages (legal fan made)
FreeBSD
Star Wars: Revelations (legal fan made)
Xandros Free Edition
Mozilla Firefox
Doom 3 Demo
America's Army (now for Linux and OSX)
I could go on, but I think you get the point. -

Re:Does anyone see the irony here?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say "IHBT, IHL, IWTTHAND". Apologies if you're not trolling.
Firstly, emule is open source.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "Give me a valid use for bittorrent, apart for things like Distros?" Bittorrent has many legit uses... from your post it seems you realise this, but I'm not toally sure. However there are cases where there aren't official torrents, or the official torrents are being heavily hit after a release and so can't be accessed. I do agree that, sadly, the majority of usage is likely to be for copyright infringement, but I can still see it being useful for non-infringing purposes, and hopefully - unlike many other torrent sites - it won't be geared towards illegal content. -
Sony's Presentation
I thought Sony's presentation was awesome. The X-Box 360 presentation was all about pizazz, and how they would be everything to every gamer, and how the new Live would change everything. They also showed clips from many action and sports titles. Blah. But Sony's presentation was all about numbers, the new cell technology, and tech demos actually SHOWING what their new tech can do. It was awesome. You can get the micrososft conference here as a torrent or direct download: http://www.filerush.com/download.php?target=e3xbo
x _20050516_300.wmv. Unfortunately, I can't find a link for the sony presentation. I myself dumped it to my hard drive from a video stream found on Gamespot http://www.gamespot.com/. -

Killzone
There's a utterly spectacular Killzone video doing the rounds, along with some rather pretty screenshots.
Except they look a bit too good. Almost, dare I say it, pre-rendered. Has Sony done the ultimate and presented a completely non-PS3, non-game 3D animation as actual gameplay? -

Fanastic remake
I first discovered this project about 2 weeks ago when the linux build was at v0.9, while searching for Linux ports of Elite. It must be one of the best free software games currently available on Linux.
I loved the original ( though I never got past one the early campaign missions because combat was nearly unwinnable without a joystick ) and have found the remake to be excellent.
The Linux 1.0 release which I downloaded via bittorrent here yesterday has fixed many of the small niggling issues I had with 0.9, and the gameplay has been greatly improved.. there are many more ships in game now, huge dogfights you can participate in or watch from the sidelines, and you can buy new types of ship that were not available in the original. -

How about a torrent?

File Rush already does this - for free
Not to toot my own horn (ok maybe just a little) but I've been doing this with my File Rush project for well over a year now. We've got a good number of high bandwidth seeds, have worked the kinks out of keeping a stable site and tracker going, and just by looking at our user submitted section, one can see that many people have taken advantage of the free seeding and tracking of their torrents. http://www.filerush.com
-
Re:Don't be surprised...
File Rush is always good for movie trailers, demos, patches, etc...
-
Re:Why isn't BitTorrent defeatable?Or are their safeguards in place for this kind of attack?
Yup - each 'GUID' for a Bittorrent block is an SHA1 cryptographic hash. If you find a way of generating collisions for those, many computer scientists and mathematicians would love to know. ;-)
From the FAQ:
BitTorrent does cryptographic hashing (SHA1) of all data. When you see "Download succeeded!" you can be sure that BitTorrent has already verified the integrity of the data. The integrity and authenticity of a BitTorrent download is as good as the original request to the tracker. Checking the MD5/CRC32/other hash of a file downloaded via BitTorrent is redundant.
I gather that if a client was pumping out corrupt blocks, or if they were corrupted at some point during transmission, they'd simply get dropped and re-requested. No idea if there's anything to permanently ignore a client that's pumping out nothing but junk, though - but on a busy tracker, it would get drowned out by all the others. Anyone know?
Incidentally, is anyone else worried by the way the article concentrated on the distribution of television shows, almost to the exclusion of everything else? I've used Bittorrent quite a bit, but only ever for completely legal purposes - plus, I've always thought of it being a rubbish way of distributing dubious stuff, what with IP addresses of everyone downloading available straight from the tracker to whoever might be investigating... -
Re:What someone needs to do...
There are such sites:
Filerush.com: The purpose of this site is to serve Bit Torrent files for recently released game demos, updates, and movie trailers of games.
and
BitTorrent Files for Slashdot Effect Victims.
and
Run But Cant Hide: Legal, Free BitTorrent Downloads
Between these three you can usually find most legal files that are in high demand.
Good luck and long live the bt!

Re:Cedega
if you have a complaint on sound effects you might try to download the Trent Reznor sound effects.
I'd seen some link for this file somewhere - and I hadn't realised what it was. It was Reznor who did the (excellent) Quake sound, wasn't it?
Anyway, here's a Bittorrent copy from Filerush - I'll have a go to see if the demo can be 'persuaded' to use them... ;-) -
