Re:WOWWell see all you need to do is write a "good" virus that goes out and infects machines to make them act as honeypots....
Cha right. And monkies might fly from my ass.If they do then lemme tell ya, do I have the website for you!

Re:Business plan
Even better, buy 2 million, hack them, and sell then as a barcode reader for $5 each!
Feel free. They are useless unlike you neuter the cuecat as they were designed to encode the output.
The last page with info on the cuecat was http://www.flyingbuttmonkeys.com/cuecat/
It's been years since I neutered one, and required one bit of wire and two dabs of solder. But after that is done poof, you have a barcode reader. Comes in handy once and a while.

Re:Radio Shack doesn't demand your name anymore
Remember when Radio Shack always demanded your name?
..... They quit asking for some reason.
I remember sometime after they started giving away CueCats that they stopped asking for your name. I can not be sure, but I strongly suspect that Radio Shack got into major trouble asking kids their addresses which resulted in Digital Convergence harassing them. I know one of my nephews, a minor, was harassed by DC's lawyers, which lead to an exchange of letters with the head office.

Another one?
Geez, am I suddenly running MS-Linux? What's up?
Anyway, updates thoughtfully provided and hosted, ala yesterday, god damn it. PATCH! NOW! Unless you think "arbitrary code execution" is a feature. And NO, I'm not talking about ActiveX.

OpenSSH as well
Openssh is also exploitable today. (AGAIN!)
They missed a few from yesterday.
http://www.flyingbuttmonkeys.com/ssh/
has a few RPMS (9/8/7.3) i just compiled to patch the problem.. (backported).. THe SRPM is also available for those unwilling to trust my patching efforts.
Or you can wait a few hours for official redhat releases. -

Re:Simple
Here ya go, except that it returns 551, not 550, and says this:
551 "5.7.1 Attachment '$file' not allowed"
-
Re:Letter contents incase of /.'ing
How about 551? It's what this milter returns.
$ctx->setreply('551','5.7.1',"Attachment '$file' not allowed.");

Has anyone noticed......the current provisions in the Homeland Security Act? There have only been three stories so far in the major media, (the one that caught my attention was this one (NYT, reg, etc...)), but the government is trying to construct a system that will make Echelon look like crap. All headed up by Admiral Poindexter, Ollie North's boss, and a convicted felon.
There are some more links on my page
This is expected to pass TODAY, so call your Senator and URGE them not to vote for the bill.

::Cue::Cat and other stupid eCrapola
I would just like to take this opportunity to point out that the Flying Butt Monkey is mightier than the
::Cue::Cat!
Although I would have much preffered to watch crq's lawyers explain to the judge that they were suing Flying Butt Monkeys for absconding with their IP.
(Actually, I just like saying Flying Butt Monkeys...)

Technical Info and schematics for MySmartPad
I had one of these and dorked around with it a little.
From what I can tell, it was probably designed by MOTO based on their Cypress CY7C63413-PC reference design. You can find detailed information (and schematics) in the MO1001 PDF Document at their web page.
Used for its intended purpose, it's a total joke and destined for the Clearance bin. It's an aweful mousepad, and the card doesn't add anything over what any user already has.
As a USB ISO-7816 card reader with some buttons, it's more interesting, but I wasn't able to figure out how to talk to the card directly. In theory, it should be able to communicate with GSM SIM cards (with an adapter), Satellite TV cards, some student id cards, etc.
Maybe the Flying Butt Monkeys are tired of :CueCats and want a new toy? -
Leenucks
Before this generates another spate of email about Linux and the IA-1, I have modified versions of Jailbait available on FBM.
They are for a 16MB CF card. Do this to put an image on the CF card:
dd if=image.img of=/dev/CF-DEVICE bs=1M
I will not tell you the root password. Boot single-user to not have to use the password, then do "passwd root" to change it.
You can boot single-user by adding the word "single" at the lilo prompt. For instance, "hdc single" -- where "hdc" is the lilo profile name.
Enjoy. The jailbait site has information on rebuilding Jailbait images.
p.s. avoid the Netgear EA101 USB Ethernet adapter, and perhaps any other adapter that uses the kaweth driver -- the hardware isn't reliable. Get a nice Pegasus adapter, like a D-Link. -
Re:What does "harm" mean?
My mirror of their Proposed Act, with a brand new subtitle!
http://nc.flyingbuttmonkeys.com/mirrors/safesurf-t yrrany-and-profit.html
They are calling their "anti-freedom" claptrap "The Online Cooperative Publishing Act", subtitled, "SafeSurf's Proposal for a Safe Internet Without Censorship".
Except that it is not only not without censorship, but also would legislate fealty to them.
I have a more accurate, but not catchy, title for their Proposed Law:
The "We would like to legislate a healthy bottom line for ourselves, and maybe put you in jail for using your First Amdnedment free speech and press rights, because we're a bunch of greedy assholes, so will you please cooperate, Act."
My children would be harmed by reading this act. "Why are some people so mean, daddy?" ... "I don't know, honey, but I'll sue their asses off for expressing those ideas! You wait and see!" ... "Daddy, you're scaring me."

Interesting uses?
i've got a pile of
:cue:cats floating around my apartment, most of them with the encryption bypassed with a little solder (thanks to directions from some Flying Butt Monkeys)...
my question is, is anyone really doing something *USEFUL* with these little buggers?... after the initial thoughts of "hey it's cool that i've got a bar-code wedge on my pc now!", i basically didn't use it for anything... i've heard lots of interesting ideas for uses, but what real-world applications have been implemented with them? -

A different protest...
This guy ain't protesting much aside from the fact that she's still wearing pants. Down with pants! Up with skirts!

Only in New York.I just noticed something awesome in this shot from the New York protest. Check the red "no parking" sign in the top-left corner of the pic. It's a bit fuzzy, but the text is:
NO PARKING
NOT 5 MINUTES
NOT 30 SECONDS
NOT AT ALL!Meh, it made me chuckle.

Re:Is This to be a Pattern?I say good riddance to Digital Convergence.
They made a product that was too clumsy to use in the way they intended. Joe Sixpack doesn't give a damn about the CueCat: who reads Time magazine while sitting in front of a computer? The only people who cared were the geeks, and DC sicced the lawyers on the geeks. Thus they destroyed their own market. Instant karma's gonna get you.
DC ought to just price the CueCat at a reasonable profit, tell Flying Butt Monkeys that all is forgiven, and forget about the ads that no one is going to answer anyway.

Be careful trying to run one of these under linux. you might be violating someones Intellectual Property. Because it is illegal to use the stuff you own.

2.2.18 procfs API
is different than both 2.2.17 and 2.4.0. I tried to post a patch to fix it here, but amusingly, slashdot's lamness filter rejected it.
The two big things I like about 2.2.18 (I've been running the -pre kernels) is that they include a working, and version 3, NFS client, and the VM seems more stable. I used to get "VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for" .. whatver/everything, especially kswapd, in 2.2.16 and 2.2.17. It seems to have gone away with 2.2.18.

Re:Not bad...
QT/Embedded already supports anti-aliasing and alpha compositing. Look pretty sweet on my iPaq. (mirror of QPE)
I wonder if the QT/X that KDE uses already includes support. If not, I don't imagine it would be too hard to move it over from QT/E.

NASA Tech BriefsHave you considered picking up a copy of NASA Tech Briefs and look through their ads? Every time I pick one up, there are ads for sensors, many of which are remote transmitting, USB connecting, fibre connection, self contained for dumping the data at a later time, and many other ingenious ways.
In fact, there is a package called LabView which is extensible and many data collectors provide modules to LabView with their sensors. LabView is predominantly a Windows product, but don't let some folk's bias get in the way of work. [Note: I'm not a Windows fan, but will use it when required or if it's the right tool for the job, which it is for things like data collection.]
I cannot attest to cost, but merely to the fact that advertising in TechBriefs has even stuck with someone who has no interest in scientific data collection, like myself. Cheers. ----- Want intelligence? Go to Stratfor.com. If it's in the news, it's too late.

QT Embedded?
Does anyone know if any PDA people are involved with this?
Does KDE have any plans for the QT Embedded environment?

NeoMedia and DC
First, the press release was from NeoMedia not DC. So yes, of course, it sounded positive.
Second, I'd just like to point out to everyone that I am all-knowing in that I foresaw this some time ago (actually, Stephen Satchell is the guru, but I think I deserve some points for spotting the guru). Specifically, under a previous /. story (http://slashdot.org/articles/00/09/28/1351255.sht ml) I wrote:
Theory of DC legal action (Score:3, Interesting)

Saw on flyingbuttmonkeys:
Step hen Satchell's theory behind the DC letters. Basically, DC is only going after barcode to web translations, not simply cuecat decoders. Even though DC has refused to answer what their "intellectual property" is, their letters have gone exclusively to sites that have software that can let you use your cat with the web. Satchell further points out that NeoMedia Technologies, not DC, actually have a patent on barcode to web lookups. NeoMedia is sitting on the patent until, I guess, there is enough money being made to jump in and begin extorting licensing fees...
