Re:Christian Science Monitor?
If any religious group decides to control a news source don't you think that they might be doing it to get yet another outlet for self-promotion?
I hate to bite, but was "retarded islamic" really called for?
Also, religious group, as opposed to corporate media? CNN, ABC,CTV, or Fox? Are these not in the business of self promotion? -
Marines vs. Aliens
I would like to see a MMORPG based on FOX's popular science fiction franchise. I don't care about Predator (Aliens vs. Predators). I know FOX had a game like this before MMORPG was known.
I would like to see something like World of Warcraft, Star Wars: Galaxies, etc. with various missions (quests) in various places. There would be different classes as well like Natural Selections including commanders, ships (medic, weapons, etc.). -

By the way, if you watch Arrested Development (best show on TV, IMO) but haven't seen the above, it will help explain a few hilarious scenes. :) -
Re:Just Leave It Open
"Mr. You Gotta Lock That Down" is Michael Bluth, from the very funny Arrested Development.
Michael: "Don't you think they're a bit too young?"
Pastor Veal: "Oh, we got serious around his age."
Michael: "Well, who could blame you? You got to lock that down." ...later...
Pastor Veal: "You kissed my wife?!"
Michael: "No, she started kissing me. You really should lock that down." -
It's taking off, slowly.
Since Fox binned My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss, they've been putting the unaired episodes up on their site every Friday.
The quality isn't the best, but it's a hilarious show, and it's always nice to see companies embracing technology. -
Re:"They don't get it"
Fox in America is trying this same thing already, they cancelled a reality show midseason, and as a consolation to fans they posted the final episodes online. Some TV you can't get for free because it just wasn't aired.

Re:What's this "O.C." everybody's on about?
It's an evening drama on FOX about rich kids in Orange County.
http://www.fox.com/oc/ -
Re:payola
The funny thing is, you're right! The O.C. is one symptom of Southern California's shift from being a defense manufacturing center to a solely entertainment-based economy (as explained by a professor of mine). We have these irrelevant characters playing people who are obsessed with status, money, and clothes rather than the things that matter in life: self-development, learning, and friendships.
As someone who went to college in southern california (UCLA '02), I have to say that The O.C. exaggerates only slightly the lives of the children of moderately wealthy parents living in Newport Beach. I've had a moderate amount of contact with people who grew up in Orange County. The great part is, these kids are often unmotivated and/or moronic so it's satisfying to have a sort of "revenge of the nerds" going on. Someone said the main character is a geek; the only reason he could be a geek is by being an outsider (I seem to recall he moved to the O.C. from somewhere more normal). It's not "normal" to be a geek in Orange County, is what the writers are telling us. Well whatever, the kids there go to USC and grow up to work in sales and marketing.
At the same time, there's something in most of us that likes to see people succeed in adversity. To me that explains why we have hero comic books and movies like Spider Man 2. I've concluded that there are several fundamentally different types of people, separated mainly by the differences in value they place on being "cool." I've long since accepted that I'm one of the ones who cares less about being cool. Of course, in the O.C. that's what matters. That's why I only spent 4 years in Southern California. -
They say they are...In the case of the unfourtunately cancelled FOX series My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss, they have not delivered on their promise to make the unaired episodes avilable online. They had originally promised to do so in January, but their webisite http://fox.com/bigfat/ has not changed since then. This seems to indicate that there are some forces at work who are afraid of taking the plunge.
This case could represent the first step in delivering TV to a whole new audience (for instance, as a university student, I do not own (or want) a TV, so I only watch what I download).
Customers matter in the end, so if you want to see downloadable (or streamable or whatever) television, contact the people in charge: Fox Broadcasting Company 10201 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90035 Phone: 310-369-3553

Re:Let me be the first to say...
I understand that the producers of the show want you to THINK it's set in Newport Beach (which I used to live in by the way), but the show is actually filmed in LA. Some Proof I knew it wasn't Newport Beach because I used to go to both the Newport and Balboa piers all the time when I lived in OC, and those piers are definately not the piers used in the show. I think they film beach/pier shots at Hermosa Beach, which is part of LA county. So, Bzzz, I'm not wrong.

Re:Virgins in Space?
At least give credit where credit's due. "Virgin's in space" was the catch-phrase for Virgin Galactic that one of the teams came up with in a recent episode of The Rebel Billionaire (Yes, I watch it. I also watch The Apprentice, want to make something of it?).

a gazillion links per request... who cares
Yes they screen for the best people, so what? apple, microsoft and such dont hire wimps you know, the cracking part was when the "CEO" was trying to explain why the results you get most times are not always the most relevant and what you get is what have created more web noise (nice tips for the spammers out there)
Get real yahoo have been longer with a better defined business model and google in the other hand receives all the atention, definetly the world has gone crazy.
Another good one is that "experts" think google is just to catalog products and services how to compare them and take better advantage of it, gimme a break.
A good question would have been "great you get a gazillion links per request so what who cares" citing the big fat obnoxious boss
Nice way to get free publicity though. -
Don't forget about southern English
Boomhauer from King of the Hill would be a good example of this.

Re:Third world schools are doomed!
Hmmmmm....four-digit UID....couldn't be could it?
People _deserve_ nothing. Sorry, it's Nature's way. If you wish to give them something, that's your prerogative, freedom permits you the freedom to give. However, if you use your guns to take from me in order to satisfy your urge to gain pleasure by giving, then you're stealing from me and I'll use my guns to protect myself.
Why does everything come down to a matter of force when dealing with Americans? "Two words. Nuclear Fuckin' weapons..." The fallacy in this thinking is that you seem to believe it's a zero-sum game. It's not: especially when you have farmers plowing their crops back into the fields to increase their moetary yield.
'random birth' is bullshit quite frankly: my families fled oppression, social theft, and/or poverty in order to come to the USA ... ...That's a self-selecting demographic
You're right, it is a self selecting demogarphic. Frightened people flee, and you still seem to be afraid of enough things to need to keep your guns around. Let's face it - you aren't going to face a military threat (you do have the most effective army), and your personal weapons aren't really going to help you against a terror attack. So tell me again, what are you afraid of? An Afghani coming over to steal your stuff?
Any other race, religion or culture can do the same. All they have to do is:
* respect each other's rights, including those of religion, speech, and property
* have a free and independent press
* have an open, multiparty democratic system with an ironclad separation of religion and state
Respect each other's rights - as long as;
you subscribe to Christianity or the cable broadcast version of it
just like yours
open multiparty democratic process as long as you can fund raise enough cash to actually run.
Smash all non-democratic nations and force them to be democratic or nuke the shit out of them. Who needs six billion people anyway? New Hampshire has it right: Live Free or Die.
And this is the crux...why do you think people hate you? Why do you think people would want to commit terror attacks against you? It's because of exactly this sort of foreign policy thinking. It's about thinking that says it is acceptable to chase profits instead of raising living standards.
The rest if the world hates you like a poor innercity person hates the landlord.
You invest nothing in the third world but expect no jealousy?
Thank God America got the Puritans and Australia got the convicts....

Gateway M505XL
I have a Gateway M505XL which Gateway appears not to sell anymore (I can't find it on their website). It is a Centrino-based laptop which has given me more than more than 5 hours of battery life. I watched a full DVD and a few episodes of The Family Guy on a plane recently and still had plenty of battery life to spare. Its a 15.4" widescreen with 512MB, 60GB, DVD Burner, etc. There are several annoyances with this laptop though - there is a "media center dealie" on the left side which has a software-driven volume control for the laptop. No actual volume knob anywhere. This means when you are watching a movie or playing a game, you can't adjust the volume. The IR port is on the front facing your stomach (I don't know why manufacturers are doing this - (ahem HP) - PUT THEM ON THE SIDE! This laptop also has an integrated subwoofer which is pretty amusing. If they could get it to last more than a month or two that would really be something. Positive things for this laptop are:
1) Decent style (subjective)
2) Long battery life
3) Great screen
4) Fast

Re:Not seeing the allure
This show was cancelled for a reason
Not so much to respond to your trolling, but in case other, more reasonable, people might be curious, let me quote from my letter to Entertainment Weekly:
Dear Entertainment Weekly,
Your May 21st, 2004 article "The X Factor" cites Fox as stating, "We wish Firefly had found an audience." It would be more accurate to wish the audience could have found Firefly, with all the schedule changes and preemptions, the out-of-order airing of the episodes, and the friday-night-death-slot with which Fox saddled this wonderfully funny and intelligent show. Fortunately for fans of quality storytelling, and despite Fox's lack of support, audiences HAVE been able to find Firefly - mostly from word-of-mouth - and DVDs have been flying off retailers' shelves by the hundreds of thousands, which has made it possible for Joss Whedon and company to bring Firefly to the big screen in 2005 with the highly anticipated movie "Serenity". Fans around the world are hopeful that a box office success will mean a return to the small screen for this beloved show, preferably on a network whose mission statement is not using reality television to promote self-image problems in young girls. -
Re:Incentives??-Sorry bad tag last time
Wasn't that originally done by Dave Chapelle as a SPOOF on reality TV? Ugh...
Sort of. Dave did a skit about a show called "Trading Spouses" and now Fox has created an actual show with the same title.
I hope Dave Chappelle is getting some money out of it.

Get Off Your Bullshit High Horse
Grow up, dude. Not all nudity implies "stroke yourself while watching this." Nudity can be used as an essential plot device, to help character development, or to invoke specific feelings (shame, modesty, sexuality, empowerment, etc.) [emphasis added]
"Yeah, Ms. Tweed, we uh, need you to get naked for the, er, plot, and to, uh, empower the feelings of modesty in our audience."
Give me strength: I don't disagree with you that artistic considerations can make nudity an essential element in a film, but every tit-flash isn't evidence of well-developed, mature cinematic sensibilities. If that were the case Showgirls would be considered Citzen Kane, and Girls Gone Wild would be a powerful work of documentary filmmaking.
So, let's take a quick look at how nudity is used in Ghost In The Shell. A quick trip over to Google's image search yields the following examples of important cinematography. Certainly no untoward objectification of women there. Just art for art's sake, for us grown-up types to enjoy over some sherry. The big tits are important to the artistic vision!
Some of us adults understand this, some do not. You seem to belong in the latter group. Feel free go back to your Smurfs and Rugrats, and leave the interesting movies to the grown-ups. The ones who can grasp the concept that "cartoons" aren't just for Saturday morning kids.
Can the fake sanctimoniousness. Nobody's saying that cartoons can't be a source of mature entertainent, and effective social commentary. Just a few examples. Heck, sometimes it gets a little racy. -

June 7th, 2004
Reporting from The MotherlandIn the wee hours of Monday morning tireless GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) soldiers were gathering intelligence reports on AOL. GNAA has been at war for some time with the AOL-Time Warner Corporation and recently tensions have risen to a boiling point.
"It was clear that things were about to get nasty," recalls GNAA member penisbird while he took part in a massive gay orgy, "but we never expected this, ah yeah, you give the best rim-jobs Shaquille O'Neil."
While launching some minor trolling raids into AOL territory, the surprise news hit them. The FBI had decided to join the ranks of AOL's dreaded KKK group.
"It came as a surprise, the FBI has always leaned on the side of Whitey, but this is further than we ever expected them to go," reports GNAA member rkz.
So GNAA, never a group to take things lying down, grabbed their ginormous cocks and battled back.
GNAA members Ghostface and Method Man quickly plunged balls deep into AOL's wide open servers. In the ensueing battle AOL proved to be a paper tiger and the gay niggers that they had kept as prisoners were liberated in the pre-dawn raid. All employees were forced to listen to the "You've got mail!" soundbyte until they all committed suicide.
"Wu-Tang Clan ain't nutin' to fuck wit'," proclaimed a triumphant Ghostface.
The FBI has remained on the sidelines during the intense battle that has gone on between GNAA loyalists and AOL catamites. They have yet to even confirm that the alliance exists. GNAA operatives speculate that the move was a bluff by AOL.
"It was a bluff," quoth penisbird.
We will simply have to wait and see how events unfold from here.

Well, Jack Bauer Had One
The Fox TV show 24 has been a paid-placement bonanza for interesting tech gear for a while. An OQO was used by the CTU (for non-24 fans, that's the "Counter Terrorism Unit") pretty heavily in hours 20 or 21 this year (Season 3). I'm pretty sure that the screens it was throwing off were dummied up, but the hardware was unmistakable. In season 1, there were so many Apple computers used, that it seemed at times like an Apple commercial. In season 2 (and even the previews for season 2), a new Powermac G5 showed up just after they were announced, but before the time that anyone but the Pope and Steve Jobs himself actually had their hands on one.
I've been dying for one since the announcement, and will be first in line to try one (to complement my laptop, multiple desktops and army of servers that I have). Then again, I was first in line to buy a new Newton, the first Linux Zaurus, and the original Rio MP3 player.
I suppose I'm one of the 50,000 suckers that Handspring co-founder Donna Dubinsky described by saying in a talk I once heard as "50,000 people will buy anything. Talk talk to me once you've sold 200,000." (my weak-memory paraphrase). -
Re:Explaining This...
When Firefly was cancelled, I downloaded the episode that I missed from the website of a friend I met on one of the Firefly fandom boards.
I did so feeling sure that Fox didn't have a problem with it, because of the following that I found on Fox's website in its "FAQ":
8. Can I get tapes of FOX Network Primetime Shows sent to me?
ANSWER:
The FOX Network does not provide nor sell videos of any of shows, specials or movies that air on the Network.
Our recommendation is to ask co-workers, friends, family and neighbors for anyone who may have taped off-the-air the show you are looking for.
And yes, I did buy the DVD set when it came out. But that was much later. -
Re:Ebola-Cold.This is the reason I couldn't figure out why the bad guys on 24 worked to decrease the incubation period of their virus. Maybe it seems scarier at first until you actually give it some thought.
-
that model is also featured on 24
in the latest third season of 24 , you can see that keyboard in action, at the offices of CTU.
-
Not going to happen for me!
I have 24 (episode 18 this Sunday night because of Bush's speech last Tuesday night -- see http://www.fox.com/24/), Alias, The Simpsons, Smallville, and Star Trek: Enterprise.

A suggestion.
I think one of the cooler, younger actresses out there right now is Elisha Cuthbert from the fox show 24. She all that you
/.ers want in a Samus. She is young, can kick but and can, um, fill up the varia suit easily.
Just my 2 pesos. -
Re:George Mason
Enlightenment lies within.
...altough you should start at the first chapter of the story. That link points to part 24 of 24. The nuke was in like #13 or so I believe, so you should start at the beginning so you know how he got there.
George Mason was a hero... but just to Jack. That's just about all he was worth. -
Tony is screwed...
The Forbes story has a screenshot of an example conversation....
Guest34725: I'm looking for reliable services with minimal downtime. Can you help?
Tony: Absolutely! Zero downtime..guaranteed in our Service Level AgreementSo, either Tony is screwed when the engineers find out, or we can add Rackspace to Cockroaches and Twinkies as the only things that will survive a nuclear war.
Seriously though. This could lead to quite a few problems, given that it's impossible to verify who's taking part in the conversation.
Scenario 1: Sales advisor offers a copy of John Grisham's new book (no, I don't know why either) if the customer buys the two Grisham books he's looking at right now. Customer buys the books but doesn't get his free book. Was it a legal contract?
Sc 2: Female SA asks the customer if he needs any help. Customer asks if she wants to meet up for kinky sex later. SA sues company for sexual harassment (I think 3
/. comments like this have +5 already)Sc 3:SA offers underage customer a deal on Sex tapes because he was looking at some when his mom wasn't in the room and he doesn't have a credit card to buy the good stuff. Paedophile?
Sc 4: Spammers install logging software which detects this popup, redirects to their website. Suddenly all of Amazon's customers are being offered Barnes and Noble special introductory offers. And Penis enlargment.
Sc 5: Tony (in the Rackspace thing) asks the customer for his telephone number, because, there's no way Guest34725 will give out his mates number. (Pizza for I.C. Wiener)
I'm a Fox whore, I apologise. If it appeases you, I don't watch Fox (channel) if such a thing exists, I live in the UK so I watch BBC or C4 (unless they replace it with snooker, hmm.)
-
The next American Idol?
The next thing you know is that Fox will be making movie-theme version for American Idol series with people trying to be actors. I wonder who would be a good judge like Simon Cowell.
:P -
Re:New Series
Even though FOX has killed too many great shows in the past, they currently have one of the best dramas out there, 24 Which oddly enough I think the only way you can enjoy the series is by watching the DVDs, where the episodes are back-to-back to one another.
-
Why not?
At home, I have 293 channels of TV for dorks and boobs, why not ONE channel for nerds?
-
Re:News for Nerds ?
This is not Firefly, this is not Farscape, this is not Star Trek. As far as I'm able to tell, it is a short-lived cartoon that I nobody I know had heard about until today.
Yep it is a cartoon and very well done, IMO. When it comes to Fox standards the length of a runnning means nothing. To some people it ranks up there with Farscape and Star Trek. The only thing I can suggest is that you watch an episode for yourself and make your own decision. Just be ready for some cynical humour.
Of course you are open to your taste.
Family Guy -
Re:or...
How about, everyone's just sick of what's on TV?
There's only one network show I'm interested in watching this season. Otherwise, I use TiVo to pick and choose items for the Our Man In Redmond channel, and the rest of it might as well be broadcast in Uzbekistan, in Uzbek, for all the difference it'll make to me. -
Gimp's is my favorite.
-
Out of curiosity
Lets say I record Justin Timberlake off the radio. Then I make a copy of it and start handing them out. Whats the difference between this, and if those other people recorded it off the radio too. End result is the same, multiple people with copies of the same song.
Hell FOX even says you can copy broadcasted shows from friends. So why is copying from one broadcast medium ok and another not?
Now before anyone says, "Oh, but if you copy the CD and share it, you are sharing songs that were not broadcasted", let me respond...
If you look at the music shared on Kazaa, most of it is the stuff that gets airplay. I have yet to see any songs from CDs that I own being shared by other users on Kazaa that did not get airtime. Besides, I heard that most of the "popular" songs on P2P are the radio-mix version anyways, which you can only get from the radio most of the time.
Heck, I could even say, "I didn't make multiple copies, I just recorded the same song off the radio on multiple occasions..."
Of course, I'm not saying I condone piracy or anything, just saying.... :) -
Re:Promising?
Well, on the Fox network's website, they have an FAQ which asks if copies of older programs are available for purchase. They respond, No... Try asking your friends if anyone has a copy they recorded. So as long as I only download material that was at one time played on the Fox tv network (shows, movies, music that was in the soundtrack...), and i call everyone on the kazaa network my "friend"... Then I shouldn't have a problem. Right?
Or is that left?

Re:In other news
Well after watching a few minutes of some show on Fox's lineup, I think the intersection set of criminals and idiots might not be null.
