Look againWhen I tell people that I play Worms online, they usually assume that it's an infantile game. That the game is basically an upgraded version of Gorrillas. But the game can get much much more sophisticated. Here are some common rules for the more challenging game types. My favorite type of game is a shopper. They require skill, guile and lots of luck.
And the coolest thing is that these games were created by the users. They are not built into the game. Kind of like Frolf =)
Hopefully Worms3D keeps the same type of freedom, or better yet, embeds them into the game to prevent cows =)

The Old and The New
Ah yes, I too have the fond memories of old Apple mice, although my first was on an Apple IIE it did also come with "mousepaint" which -- looking back -- couldn't have been much fun on my 13" television screen and Epson MX-80 dot matrix printer.
As for right now, both at work and at home, I use the Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman . It has neat "forward" and "back" buttons for web browsing that even work fine in Linux. But of course I've always been a bit of a trackball fan. Several case studies claim that trackballs may be slightly more ergonomic because of "hand fit" issues and "reduced arm movement." I wonder what everyone else thinks about the whole trackball vs. conventional issue?

Old news is good news?
When I was in third and fourth grade, I read a lot of stories from "The Three Investigators" Series.
One of the stories (I don't remember which) was about a haunted house. The secret behind this haunted house, was a huge pipe organ which had been tuned to subsonic frequencies, to apply this very effect (making people afraid, etc).
The first of these books was named "The Secret of Terror Castle". Perhaps that is the one I remember. It was published in 1964. -

While this might be sensible if all that was affected was amateur radio hobbyists I might agree too. But since HF is still an important backup and emergency communications infrastructure I do not agree with such an idea. Sure it has lots of downsides compared to other high-tech solutions. But those high tech solutions are expensive and require extensive infrastructure to be work. But you start cutting trans-atlantic or trans-pacific cables, how quickly and how well can satellite communications scale to handle the increase traffic load? Space weather affect satellite communications, or did you forget about
Galaxy IV malfunction as well as countless other satellite problems (e.g. AO-40).
I will say that I don't believe that power-line distribution makes sense for broadband Internet.
I think you are right, this will be more important than HF users (especially amateur radio operators) complaints. I doubt there is little to no advantage of BPL over other broadband methods, such as various DSL technologies (such as G.lite), cable modems, and DSS like DirectPC. -

Well, for one thing, it'll actually be "Digital".
My mom, despite a reasonably technical background, bought a Kodak PLUSDigital camera -- which sounded to her like a "disposable digital" camera. In reality, it was simply a standard, film-based camera with CD-ROM processing included in the price. Of course, the price was several buck$ higher than she would have paid for a regular disposable camera.
I don't think she's gotten around to developing the pix yet, so I don't know how well the concept worked.
Meanwhile, Ritz' idea sounds like a winner:
* I can get rid of the obvious "oops" pix, even without the LCD.
* I'll be able to afford $10 bucks a pop a lot easier than $200, for the small number of pix I take.
* Developing onto both CD and 4x6 hard-copy is better than I could do with a $200 camera, anyway.
* By the time I get serious about taking digital pictures, someone on Slashdot will have hacked together an interface. If they can hack Furby, a "simple" digital camera can't be that tough.
By the way, guys... when you hack the interface, don't forget the IR mods! -

On the one hand, there's a faction trying to eliminate the penny in the US because it's nearly worthless (nothing costs <$0.05 anymore). On the other hand, people are trying to figure out how to charge micropayments on the net. Aren't these opposite approaches to the same problem?
It seems to me that when a commodity gets cheap enough, people are willing to pay a flat fee for nearly unlimited usage. The most obvious example is phone service. Do you think people will ever really want to spend their money in tiny increments? I don't.

Discontinuous. The square wave is a good example of a function that can't be made by adding sinusoids. The Fourier series will add to a function with about 9% overshoot in infinitely thin, yet zero-energy spikes. An interactive demo of this "ringing" effect can be found here (set a to zero). Fourier's theorem actually states that almost any periodic function can be expressed as a sum of sinusoids.

Its a rare exception where data is being modulated strictly through AM or FM.

Stereo FM doesn't use two separate frequencies. They modulate R+L as mono on the on the baseband. Then they modulate R-L above that. Then the modulate the baseband carrier using standard FM. A mono receiver works as normal, since it just cuts off the IF frequencies above a certain threshold. However, a stereo receiver regenerates the stereo separation by recovering those additional higher frequencies. Here's an explanation with graphics. -

This guy already has people paying him for the privelege of listening to his show "24/7." He maintains a 2-week archive.
It's not about the music (is there anyone left who listens to radio for the music?), it's about the gab. This guy's already got one of these radio Tivo's, and has been promoting it's use on his website in his campaign against this guy. And everybody seems to take their cues from this guy, who now has his own nationwide radioshow too. I know as well that NPR audio archives are likewise very popular.
It's all huge, mostly absurd, and now available on-demand. Short term, it make take some money out of the pockets of the outfits that charged for access to their audio archives, but long-term it's gotta be a good thing for a genre that's just getting bigger (and more influential, rightly or wrongly) on a daily basis. -

Phoenix probably did not officially announce the connection between their spiffy BIOS and the similarly-named Mozilla project. To do so would have announced their project before it was more than vaporware. Sometimes companies slip up and make *ethical* business decisions...
To understand what happened and why, look at the two related events: the lawsuit and the BIOS release. Add some logical speculation, observation, and assumption: Phoenix Technologies wanted to name their brower the Phoenix Browser (speculation). Phoenix Technologies did not (AFAIK) sue the Project Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, Phoenix Contact, or any immortal flaming birds(observation). Phoenix Technologies is staffed by humans(assumption). Humans tend to be jealous and illogical(observation).
Stir until mixed. Bake until done. Remove conclusion from head. Mine looks like this: Phoenix Technologies planned to release a browser under the name 'Phoenix Browser', but someone beat them to the name. Rather than pick a different name, they convinced themselves that they had more right to the name than the other guy. Then, they send hordes of marauding Vikings to pillage and plunder. Or something like that.
Was there a connection? Probably. Will they admit it? Probably not. Am I done ranting? Reply hazy; try again.

Egad, this woman does like this book. No fewer than 13 reviews: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 (repeated here and here), 14?.
My first thought was the Denise M. Clark was a shill, but if she is, she's incompetant. By using the same name over and over, it becomes easy to track her down. My next thought was that she was a UFO nut trying to spread the word. Possible, but she has reviewed many other books.
My new theory is that she's desperately trying for fame through the unlikely technique of publishing reviews on as many sites as possible. (Check out her web page, "The on-line home of author/reviewer Denise M. Clark". Either that, or she's a space alien here to prepare us for use as slaves and food for her hideous grey masters. So you think it's just coincidence, or lack of foresight or something, that LucasFilm is notorious for releasing not one, not two, not three, but *four or more* versions of each film to the home video market? The initial ones being downright crippled, then gradually getting better?
How about the fact that they had to scale back the number of merchandising tie-ins for AotC because there was so much press about how TPM was basically a 2 hour vehicle for cross-promotions of toys, ties, and KFC
His lifestyle, which you point out, actually argues my point: when people are greedy, they often *don't* have mansions, yachts, harems, etc, because it isn't about enjoying wealth, but rather accumulating it.
George Lucas definitely had some potential, but speaking in present tense, he's about as much of an "artist" as Brittney Spears -- he may be in complete technical control of movies, but he is absolutely a slave to public opinion when it comes to what to make, because he's greedy and the primary interest is in maximizing revenue, not producing quality movies. Sometimes it works in our favor (everyone hates Jar-Jar, we get less Jar-Jar), sometimes it works against us (must include a cheesy romance to capture the female demographic). That's par for the course in Hollywood, I know, but my point is that he's no exception... and that, with customer-abusive attitudes in video release and merchandising, he is actually one of the worst.

I don't know why it is, but the moment American media gets hold of something, it turns it into bland, flavorless mush. Is it really so hard to come up with a half hour of entertaining television, devoid of filler?
Um, the Americans had this before the UK. Biohazard astounded the crowd by self-righting, a full two years before Rex's legendary backflip. Blendo tore opponents to shreds long before Hypnodisc came up with an inferior implementation of the flywheel weapon.
I think the main reason UK Robot Wars is so good as regards the action / bullshit ratio is that we have so _many_ robots to get through. There's simply no time for filler material. Anyone with a bit of mechanical ability can knock together a robot, and getting it down to London is hardly a transcontinental commute.
Personally, I just want to get hold of a video of Razer on Battlebots. Their website brags like mad about that.
