Could've happened last generation
Back in 2004 Nintendo were famously going to extend the GC life cycle with new peripherals for the forseeable future, including a mysterious EyeToy rival. Said peripheral, presumably, turned into the Wii controller. So obviously this is an idea that's been considered in the past. I guess the GC seemed too aged, at the time, for them to actually go through with that.

As a side note, Valve just killed community mapping for original Left 4 Dead by announcing this so soon. Development SDK is still in beta for L4D and thus releasing information for L4D2, most of the people will move to that whilst skippijg the first game. I feel so abandoned right now. I have 2 maps ready for 5 maps campaign.
There has been also talk that the new game will have the old campaigns too. They say that the custom campaigns made for L4D will work also on L4D2 so why the hell they even bother to do SDK if they gonna screw us over by making us buy another game in which we already have like half? Money. Valve is gone greedy. -

I think the bigger announcement...
...was that MS got Konami to make a 360 exclusive Metal Gear Solid franchise.
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/988/988687p1.html
If
/. is going to report anything about MS at E3 this was probably the biggest news at the conference. -
Re:Computers are cheap - just get another box.
"Check out some of the refurbished systems available online and from places like Frys."
Craigslist any 2+ ghz P4 1gb system for ~$100 and you should be able to play City of Heroes since that is the recommended system requirements. Slap in a $100 Radeon 4770 (slashdot's new favorite card) and her system will probably run better than yours.... or you can continue to waste our time. Your choice, choose wisely. -
IGN has much more information and an interview...
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/984/984129p1.html
Some highlights:IGN: Is Point Lookout a reference to Point Lookout State Park in Maryland? Is that where the DLC takes place?
Todd Howard: Yes, yes it is.
IGN: What about for Mothership Zeta?
Todd Howard: If you poke around Fallout 3, you can find a crashed UFO with an alien inside that is broadcasting a signal your Pip-Boy picks up. You get abducted and the whole thing takes place on a giant alien spacecraft. It's one of those classic 50's B movie type things, but with a harder edge.
Some people are sounding the 'jump the shark' alarm on this DLC but let's wait see just how 'hard of an edge' this DLC has before we roast Bethesda.
Of course Bethesda is full of shit for one of the answers in this interview...
IGN: Why is it that the first three pieces of DLC are finally hitting the PS3? Was it a timed exclusivity deal, or was something else worked out?
Todd Howard: It's mostly the workload on us. Based on our Oblivion experience, it was clear that Xbox users were much more comfortable buying content, by a wide margin. It's a lot of work to get them ready for a particular platform and now that they've been so popular, we want to get them on the PS3. And there's obviously been a lot of frustration on the part of PS3 owners, who don't feel they are getting the total Fallout 3 experience, and we don't want that to happen. We want everyone to have everything, but we still need to set priorities so we can use our development time wisely.
IGN: Was the eventual PlayStation 3 release for the existing DLC always in the works, or was it something that came up after the fact?
Todd Howard: We always wanted to do it, but until it actually looks like it will happen, we don't want to make promises. We've been working on it and they aren't done yet so it's going to take time for each DLC to be moved over to the PS3 and work well. As a result there will still be a month or so gap between each one once they start hitting on the PS3.
This was the same thing with Oblivion. MS paid them for timed exclusives for add-on content or DLC. I don't know why they are lying in this interview.
Nevertheless more Fallout 3 content to hold everyone over until the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls. And Bethesda is making an M-rated game for the Wii as well to keep us occupied.

Re:realiance on user generated content
If you really think that users can 'enhance' anything than you inexperienced, uninformed or just plain stupid.
...thinking that random users will enhance your game is like thinking that DIY bike enthusiast can beat Yamaha. You will wreck your game period, but may be we have a different game in mind..Excluding your user base from the possibility of creating content because of your preconceived notions shows a lack of forethought and imagination.
Ah, what am I saying. We all know that users can't create content that's worth a damn, especially not for free.
Those examples are fan creations for a game that's more-or-less a niche game that does not have top-end graphics. You really believe there's no talent in an audience many hundreds of time the size? Good thing you're not in charge...

Microsoft's Ripoff Of Sony's Skill Points
Brilliant? No.
A ripoff? Yes.
http://guidesarchive.ign.com/guides/14725/skill.html
Sony and Insomniac Games invented the Skill Point(aka Acheivement) system all the way back in 1998. They've been a staple of Sony/Playstation games ever since all the way up to their current incarnation, Trophies.
What is mind boggling about Microsoft's ripoff of Sony's Skill Point system was that Microsoft utterly failed to grasp the entire point. Skill Points were something extra above and beyond the game that if you put in the effort you were rewarded with unlockables, cheats, new skins, and so on.
Microsoft copied the mechanics of Skill Points, but then idiotically just made them give you a completely pointless 'gamerscore' that means nothing other than silly 'my gamerscore number is higher than yours' e-penish waving.

This product is the one that the Wii Motion+ uses. They actually unveiled it a year ago when Nintendo showed off the device at the E3.

Re:Yeah and Resident Evil 5 is RACIST
No, I'm not quite colorblind. That article might be well written, but I certainly don't share the author's point of view. A lot of the "strange rituals" and dirtiness found while exploring the game shouldn't be viewed as some stereotyping or whatever. It's advertised as a fun a video game, not a realistic simulation of modern day Africa. The game is obviously way more interesting and fun if I can explore a primitive village, or ancient tunnels, and shoot spears and other weapons out of the air that are being thrown at me, compared to if I was up against, well, normal people in a modern setting. I suggest reading this article instead.

Sega's role? One thing that's completely omitted from the Edge piece is mentioned in IGN's history of Sega:
"We got together with [Sony] and defined what we'd like to see in our next hardware. We had this great idea that it should be a joint SEGA-Sony hardware system. If we had to take a loss on the hardware (which was the norm then), we'd split the loss on the hardware, but we wouldn't split software, so any software they did, they'd get 100% of the profits, and any software we did, we'd get 100% of the profits. It seemed like a fair deal since we were eons ahead of them in terms of software development.
"So we go to Japan, and Sony management liked the idea. Then we went to SEGA, and Nakayama hated the idea. [laughs] So that was the end of that, and the rest is history once again. Those were the specs that became the PlayStation." -- Tom KalinskeEarlier, Sega of Japan had also shot down Sega of America's proposal to use the SGI chipset that later became the N64.

Re:$25 million?
Chicken Shoot for the Wii
Well if this site and this other site are any indication of how good this game is I think hammering nails in your head is a more fun experience. Still to be fair every person has their own idea of what is a fun game and what is not and from my perspective this game reminds me of the old NES game "Duck Hunt" which was IMHO great for about an hour or so before letting it gather dust until the next party, although after a while it gets too embarrassing to bring out
:) -
Re:am i missing something?
stop making these huge, expensive games.
go back to making small, experimental fun games.it seems so simple.
I agree, you'd think that with the new controller and the lower graphical capabilities, game devs would have thought "well, all we can do with this is make something new and innovative, rather than doing the same thing we did last year with prettier graphics. Spend less money, but put a little more thought into it."
Most instead went with the tactic of "Lets put out games we already made for older systems with only the control scheme changed.
When we run out of old games, we'll just
1. slap something together in 2 hours that will hardly be playable
2. come up with a silly title like 'ninjabread man'
3. ??? maybe hope that enough people will accidentally buy our game instead of another game that...
4. Profit"It's not like there's a shortage of good ideas for games on the wii, I honestly don't know why game makers are so resistant to new ideas when their current strategies aren't working.

Uh, graphics are surfing the uncanny valley anyway
Graphics in these games are already getting into the uncanny valley, getting further into it doesn't make for a better game. I'd rather have higher framerates during busy action sequences (like in Left4Dead) than have a slightly more realistic pimple on BJ's nose or whatever. If the gameplay is fun (TF2, Quakewars) the graphics don't have to be super awesome.
Hell, probably one of my favorite mindless action games of all time is Gain Ground for the Sega Genesis, and the graphics on that are... not so good (by today's standards of course). In fact, while looking for that link I found out that you can play this game on Wii's virtual console. Neat.

Homebrew that made commercial
On PSP, some homebrew were so good that they went commercial

Re:what's with these arcade simulators
None of the modern missile lock on frenzy games have anywhere near the depth of the old school sims, just can't get into them.
Go get yourself a copy of IL-2 Sturmovik and you will be in Nirvana. It's probably the best serious combat flight sim ever made, and you can set it for anything from moderate realism to full-out, hard-core "I want to adjust the engine mixture myself, thank you very much" realism. Based on your comments I predict you will love it - and as a bonus, you should be able to find it priced at about one-fifth the cost of HAWX.
IL-2 has been expanded and updated many times over the years, so to make sure you get the total package, look for the compilation titled IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946. It includes the core game, all its expansions, the sequel (Pacific Fighters), and a bunch of Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe-style late-war wonder jets. Earlier compilations will lack some of these and will require patching to bring up to date, so 1946 is the version to buy.
Ironically, Ubisoft is the North American distributor for the IL-2 series; if you live there, you can buy 1946 as a digital download from Ubi's Web store for USD$10. It's also available on Steam at the same price, and if you prefer physical media, Amazon has the DVD version for $15.

Re:Name Rec.
Step 1: Sign celebrity endorsement (Clancy)
It's not even an endorsement any more. Ubisoft bought his name for $30 million USD. They now own the name "Tom Clancy" and can slap it on anything and everything they want to, including things that aren't video games. There's no longer even a token endorsement going on, it's just a brand name now.
Presumably he gets to keep his name for use in any future books, but anyone else wanting to make something "Tom Clancy" has to license it from Ubisoft.

I'm the author of the article
A few general comments here.
First, this article is intended for professional game developers. I wrote another article on this topic for game players and enthusiasts at RPG Vault: http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/807/807409p1.html Read that article if you want to see why legitimacy is important to everyone, and why attempts to restrict the content of games hurts more than just game developers.
The question isn't really if games are Art (with a capital A), but if they're seen as legitimate. The biggest example to show that games are not necessarily considered legitimate is in the numerous laws enacted to restrict the sales of games to "protect the children". Most of these politicians railing against video games are the same ones that would never think about trying to regulate books or even movies. Politicians will speak out against games because there is enough sentiment that games aren't really legitimate that the politician can score easy points. Thankfully, at least in the U.S., the courts have defended games in terms of free speech against various legislative attacks.
Personally, I think games are an incredibly powerful medium. I think that in the future we'll be able to develop games that have the same impact and meaning as classic movies and books; of course, we still have a very long way to go. On the other hand, we may not get that opportunity if we're hobbled by people who scream the battlecry "save the children!"

Outdated links
Somehow the second and third link seem very much outdated (posted in december). This seems more recent, and 2nd patch related: http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/44199/Second-Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-PC-Patch-Released

Re:That depends...
Eh, it was a semi-decent C&C Generals clone (though infantry feels a bit too strong, maybe that's just because the AI doesn't counter it properly though) plus Nazi combat dirigibles are always fun so picking it up from the bargain bin was worth it overall... Oh, you mean having the words Turning Point first?

Re:It's a rare game...
Other than the MMO part, I think you just described Lute Hero for NWN2.

1. For example, Top 10 Tuesday: Wildest Statements Made by Industry Veterans. It's at number 4.
2. Do your own fucking research. It takes a whole 5 seconds to copy and paste that phrase into Google. Ah, wait, it's just another meme that lets retards pretend they're part of some big smart family by copy-and-pasting something. Carry on, then. No need to start using your own brain now, after all.

2Gb/s? The RSX is on the FlexIO bus, giving it ~20Gb/s to play with according to specs.

Re:Update, or rebuild completely. Renovation = Rui
well, there are two ways of resurrecting old games: remake and re-imagining. the former may be straight remakes like Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles or Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X, or they can be new installments to an old series following the same formula, like Contra 4 or Bomberman (Portable). but re-imaginings present a completely new/original take on an old franchise. an example of this would be Metroid Prime, which is practically in a different genre from the original 2D platformer. likewise, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has very different gameplay from its 2D predecessor as well.
both methods of breathing new life into old games have their place. though it's probably harder to create a successful re-imagining. Space Invaders Extreme, for example, is a hugely successful remake of the classic arcade game with updated trippy graphics; whereas Space Invaders: Evolution (Galaxy Beat) is sort of somewhere in between a remake and a re-imagining that attempts to stay true to the original game while adding new depth to it (mixing in elements of a rhythm game).
personally, i prefer games of the in-between route like Space Invaders: Evolution or Atari Classics Evolved. they're not just graphics updates, but also update the gameplay (while keeping the spirit of the original).

Great folks, all around
I recently had the opportunity to fly up to Edmonton to visit Bioware and get a peek at the new Dragon Age toolset (I'm in the middle here). While it was interesting to see what the new game engine could do, the most fun was just spending time with the Bioware folks. I do software development for a healthcare organization, so it was a treat to see how thing were run in a gaming company. Many concepts were the same, but there was indeed a big break room full of food and gaming systems. I also was pelted during a Nerf shootout by the toolset developers. Their goal for the day was to see how many visitors they could get in a day.
The gaming industry has come far with Dragon Age. The technology has improved immensely, along with the effort required to make high-quality games. From what little I've seen, I'm hopeful Dragon Age will indeed be the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. -
