I liked that the villain in that movie was basically Mark Zuckerberg, played by the guy who was Dexter. It was fairly shlockish, but I think it would probably been seen in a much better light if it were to come out now, with us being on the far side of the social networks' ill effects on society.

The depressing thing about our current times, is that people are speaking past each other so much there's little that's agreed on.

Teaching (or at least reminding people of) ethics in technology is a noble goal... One of my favorite courses as an undergrad (despite the textbook itself being rather poorly written) was an Ethics in Computing course, and I'm sure there's a lot more to be said now.

"All science, no philosophy" leads to bad outcomes, I think we can agree. The problem is that I don't know that I trust any of Silicon Valley to do so in any sort of neutral manner.... Mozilla's Ethics are that Brendan Eich should have been fired. Can't say I agree with that.

Second, Respondent's offer to sell the Disputed Domain Name to Complainant for USD 750,000 plus, among other things, eight lifetime Green Bay Packers box seats, is clearly "for valuable consideration in excess of [Respondent's] documented out-of-pocket costs directly related to the domain name," which is evidence of bad faith under paragraph 4(b)(i) of the Policy – a paragraph that includes no exception for an offer that a respondent, as here, later claims "was not meant as a serious counteroffer."

The policy in question also doesn't seem to cover this situation unless the request came prior to their announcement. After all, if it came after the announcement, then it seems reasonable for them (as Packers fans) to have assumed that the company was a shadow broker for the Packers, in which case given the obvious value of the domain to such a franchise, I would argue that that wasn't an outrageous counter.

More to the point, by interpreting that regulation in such manner, this will strongly discourage people from making counteroffers, as any counteroffer could potentially be interpreted as acting in bad faith. That is probably not what ICANN had in mind when they wrote that policy. Just saying. I think the UDRP needs to be revised.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying there wasn't bad faith. The timing is at the very least suspect. But bad faith must be proven, such as proving that the people in question had family or friends who would have known about the Packers' plans. If there isn't any plausible way for them to have found out, then as far as I'm concerned, the Packers just stole someone's domain name.

Either way, if 20th Century Fox really wanted to win the hearts and minds of every geek everywhere, they could file a claim against the domain, win it back, and give it back to the family in question. That would really shine some much need sunshine on UDRP abuse by big businesses.

I look up to and admire Linus Torvalds because he runs a great project whose work I use every day. Note the lack of me addressing his antisocial behavior. I don't care, or at least not within the context of enjoying Linux.

I look up to and admire Thomas Jefferson. H.P. Lovecraft. Louis C.K. These were/are all smart, talented people. And you say they have character flaws or fucked up in some way? Ok, fine. Your fallacy is that you think fiction has nothing to teach you; which is false. It is hard to fill the cup when it thinks it is already full. You are completely unable to understand the Three-fold nature of writing:

* Literal
* Allegorical
* Application

By dismissing fiction has having no value you remain blind to the lesson(s) that it can potentially teach. You are stuck at the Literal level not realizing that there is FAR more to understanding then just the Literal interpretation.

Fiction OPENS YOUR MIND to possibilities that you normally would not be aware.

There are actually examples of good European "super hero"-movies, like for example Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot, which has more character depth and plausibility than any of the Marvel "super hero"-movies.

A Proper education needs Humanities and STEM.

When you say it like that - particularly with the capitalization - I get the image of English aristocrats nipping tea and complaining how everyone who hasn't suffered through Latin is just a country bumpkin. It was probably a good idea when the highly educated were the teachers, doctors and priests while most everyone else were farmers or craftsmen so they had to cover a broad range of subjects. Today we need specialists, lots and lots of specialists. I don't need my neurosurgeon to have university-level education in "History, Literature, Politics, Arts, Sociology, Philosophy and Psychology" I need a damn good surgeon and honestly I couldn't care if he has the social skills of Dr. Stephen Strange either.

From first grade to my master's degree I had 17 years of education. I really don't think 12 years as a generalist and 5 years as a specialist is too much. There is plenty I had to learn and plenty more I could have learned in my field of study, of course we also need cross-overs so the specialists talk to each other but we don't need Renaissance men like Leonardo da Vinci trying to cover everything from anatomy to airplanes. If you want to be an aerospace engineer for SpaceX that's cool but it'll probably take most your education and work experience to get there. There's so many giants standing on the shoulders of other giants it takes a good while just to learn what others have learned before you.

Also, operating such a system at 30,000 feet is not practical as high-altitude clouds will often obscure the ground, and at over 5 miles range the optics needed to discern details would be impractical on board an aircraft smaller than an airliner. These types of persistent surveillance systems typically operate much lower.

These systems capture and record everything, and I mean everything, that moves. Nobody that lives beneath such a system will have any privacy. Keep in mind that image data from airborne sensors is often fused with ground sensors, making The Minority Report more of a documentary than a sci-fi thriller.

If a society has problems with crime and corruption, monitoring every detail with such a surveillance system will certainly be entertaining, but it's not likely to actually solve anything, and might lead to even more hilarity.
