wow, so words are in fact defined by the dictionary, rather than the speech community that uses them?

The problem here is that there are in fact two communities using these terms: there are the professional cybergeek types, who actually know something about the field, and there are the unwashed masses of the general public, who are blissfully ignorant. The Geeks distinguish between hacking and cracking; the great unwashed, however, could care less about the subtle-or-not distinction, and use one term for both.

The term "hacker" started out in the computer community a LONG time back-- I recall reading history pieces that date the term to the 60s. It predates the Google USENET archive, anyway. However, the semantic distinction between hacker and cracker within the Geek community clearly does not predate that great repository of asbestos suppositories.

The earliest post archived at Google using both the terms "hacker" and "cracker" was on September 15, 1983. This was apparently in response to a news piece on CBS news on roughly Wednesday the 14th, although there is evidence of at least something being earlier. While I do not remember the CBS news piece, it was most likely prompted by a Hollywood turkey released around then.

When the news media presented this little petri-dish culture to the great Unwashed, they made one mistake. They heard, "someone who breaks into systems is a hacker", and reported "a hacker is someone who breaks into systems". It's a category error fallacy, or perhaps a definition fallacy, but who expects logical thought from a reporter?

Anyway, my point is: the hacker community did not make a clear semantic distinction of "cracking" until after the term "hacking" was exposed to the public, and that at the time "hacking" was still a correct term describing the activity, albeit one that included many other different activities as well.

Why use robots when TOYS did it so well ?

How favorably, I'm left to wonder, is this science center compared to the one that's practically in my back yard? I've been meaning to get there in the last five years that I've been living in Hudson County, NJ. An old geek friend I used to work with recommended it highly, stating emphatically to "bring your inner child" to this place.


My geek friend, was not a scientist, by the way. But she did tell me about a rather fascinating fact. It'd been a childhood dream of mine to attend spacecamp (having been inspired by the schocky movie of the same name). And, yeah, I had the hotts for Lea Thompson! (hey, whaddya want? I was an 80's kid!). So, I wanted to go. It's my fave type of vacation...a learning vacation! BUT when I called, I was 16 years old. I was told (rather rudely, btw) that 15 was the cutoff age! NO SOUP FOR YOU!!! I was crestfallen.

But I was very glad when Camille (my geek friend's name) told me that SpaceCamp now has adult programs that you can attend either with or without the kids in tow. It tends to attract brighter than average, professional adults, I'm told. Once I learned that, this venture DEFINITELY made my adult "to-do list".

Has anyone had experience with either of these learning programs, or insights to offer? I would love to know how complete and erudite either/both are. I see from the website, that SpaceCamp now has an "advanced" spacecamp for the returning adult! (seemingly!) TOO COOL!

Whenever I hear about stuff like this, I always think of that really bad movie The Big Hit, starring Mark Wahlberg. There's a scene where one guy is trying to trace another guy's phone call and they have a conversation something like:

1 - Don't even try to trace this call. I have caller ID blocker.
2 - Oh yeah. I have caller ID blocker-blocker
1 - Well, I also have caller ID blocker-blocker-blocker
2 - And I have caller ID blocker-blocker-blocker-blocker!

So, I guess all we need now is a pop-up blocker-blocker-blocker....

Or let's look at really classic television. Pretty much everybody has seen all the old reruns of The Honeymooners , but the show was only on the air for 39 episodes in the 1955-1956 season. It may seem like way more than that, but that's really it. And yet that show -- and I Love Lucy -- will live on in re-runs forever and ever.

Of course, the real difference between shows like The Honeymooners & I Love Lucy on one hand, and Andreomeda & Mutant X on the other, is that the former are classic & timeless, while the latter are boring crap. By and large. The number of episodes is only part of the equation: a good show can be syndicated forever (and, as a side effect, a good show will have a long initial run), but a bad show won't make it in reruns and will rarely survive long enough to build up a catalog anyway.

The interesting recent twist is that now, with the affirmation of strong DVD sales, dead shows are able to get a second chance at a new life. This has never really happened before. There have been spinoffs (all the Trek variants) and remakes (all the Twilight Zone revivals), but I can't think of many cases before now where a show that had been cancelled & disbanded was brought back on the air, as is supposedly happening now with shows like Family Guy and Futurama. The closest I can think of is when cult shows like The Critic or TV Nation were dropped from their first network but picked up by a smaller one, but at least in these two cases the shows didn't do any better the second time around. It'll be interesting to see where that trend goes in the future, as more shows are put on to DVD and audiences get a second chance to see things they ignored the first time around.

A good (IMO) movie on the above-mentioned is "Advance to Ground Zero", aka Nightbreaker.

If there is a chance of a good ROI, of course! Paul Crouch, founder of TBN was also the Executive Producer of the Omega Code movie franchise. I don't know how much money was made on these films, but I doubt he took a loss (or else he'd never make a sequel). An expedition, (or "mission" as they would call it) to uncover the "truth" about what's atop Mt. Arrarat could be a cash cow for them. Do I believe that it's Noah's Ark? Hell no! But I'm sure that the Tele-fundies could put some spin on it, regardless of what was found, to have their pledge lines ringing off the hooks.

Does anyone remember an uber-cheesy made-for-TV movie named Mazes and Monsters? Sort of like Reefer Madness for RPGs, Tom Hanks (in a role he'd probably like to forget) is driven insane from playing a Dungeons & Dragons-style fantasy game.

I suppose that this premise sounded plausible in an era when "Just Say No" was the state-sanctioned form of teenage birth control...

It's pretty good, even if you're not into the anime thing. The animation is a little too dark in some areas but other than that it stands up for being almost 20 years old.
