Re:I used to work at vmware. Criminal engineering.
I work here now.
It feels like working at VERSALIFE from DeusEx.
Seriously. VMware is phony. Everything is outsourced. hardly anyone works at palo alto. everyone is desi or chinese. all the desis and chinese fight to keep their teams in their respective countries on top. there is NO CTO! VMwares CTO office is like fake news. Nothing is forward looking. Its about using asia as intellectual slave labor to keep this dead company alive.
The CEO throws these lame parties about 1-2 times a month and lets the desis and chinese take pictures with him.

I bet whoever steps in to replace Gawker will realise if a judge orders them to take down sex tape, they either comply or get bankrupted when the person in the sex tape sues.
Funnily enough when people refused to take down Jennifer Lawrence's leaked nudes Jezebel denounced them, even though they'd previously drawn everyone's attention to the leak. Jezebel was owned by Gawker media. Meanwhile Gawker decided to keeping up a leaked sex tape of Hulk Hogan in defiance of a court order was the hill they'd die on. Quite literally - Hogan sued them and that ended Gawker.

Core samples
A one meter by 50mm core sample would mass about 2 kg. The navy has railguns now that can accelerate 10 kg to about 2.4 km/sec. According to this Delta V map, delta v to reach low Mars orbit is about 3.8 km/sec. Considering that it wouldn't have to be built to withstand use in warfare, it might not be that much harder than what we've already achieved to build a railgun that could launch an ice core to low Mars orbit.

Re:549$ for a case?
Thats a nice list, But you seem like you would benefit from a RAID 5 array.. not so much loss of data. And if you have full control of the linux box, you should have no issue with it losing data like in the past. Other than that i think the HGST 8tb drives are still the absolute best drive available as far as failure rate goes.
This is my first system with an M.2 slot, and i will never look back. That being said looks like you got one of the best of those also.
When i originally purchased my setup I had the C6H board, It was fucking awesome! but I couldn't get it to boot with 2 video cards in it that were not identical cards, and after a week or two of waiting for bios update and trying everything possible to make it work... I returned it and got the Gigabyte board. Which worked great out of the box. Kind of wish I had an external clock on it. but sine I knew it was only temporary until this upcoming release was out I didn't mind too much. It is still a hell of an overclock board and has awesome VRM. I'm hoping asus brings out a new crosshair for x470, as that will probably be my board of choice when it happens. Their CS is garbage, but their motherboards and GPU's are great, high end stuff atleast. I had one of their headsets and on the 2nd day I got it it literally started on fire on my head. Here is a link to the pictures... https://imgur.com/a/mwJuq Wasn't very happy. To say the least, Motherboards and GPU's are the only ASUS item I will purchase anymore.

Re:By Definition
Here's the 2010 UK general election under different systems
The interesting thing is that under anything with a lower Gallagher Index than FPTP, the third largest party can form a coalition with either of the first two parties.
This leads to a situation where the third largest party can choose who is Prime Minister!
It's the objection to AV that David Deutsch raises here - that it grants too much power to the third largest party. And that power isn't even good for the third largest party
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
It's very hard to do anything about this for the voters. Most of them don't vote for the third largest party anyway. In fact only the rise of the fourth largest party can evict the third largest party from a permanent place in government - something that Deutsch points out in the comments happened in Germany.
And if you work out the terms for the Gallagher Index you notice something strange about the above results
You get these results
FPTP
CON: 306
LAB: 258
LIB: 57
Other : 28AV
CON: 281
LAB: 262
LIB: 79
Other : 28AV+
CON: 275
LAB: 234
LIB: 110
Other : 31STV
CON: 246
LAB: 207
LIB: 162
Other : 35Notice the way the seats for 'Other' and the Gallagher index term for 'Other' doesn't change as much as the 'Lib' figure. I.e. the proposals are designed to be more proportional for the third largest party but not for the others - they are designed to entrench the third largest party as permanent part of government! Needless to say the Liberal Democrats are very, very keen on 'electoral reform'. Still if you look closely at what they say, they often say that electoral reform 'would keep extremist parties out of government' - e.g. by having a high threshold for STV. Of course an extremist party means 'any party with less support than us'.
I would consider electoral reform so long as it didn't have this misfeature though - it needs to be more proportional for all parties - 1,2,3,4,5. Not just more proportional for 1,2,3.

Re:REAP YOUR TAX CUTS MY FELLOW AMERICANS!
The Laffer curve is obviously true. Consider. If you have zero taxes you collect zero revenue. If you have 100% taxes you also collect zero revenue because people won't work for free. In between the two there's a curve where tax revenues increase up to some level and then begin to fall.
When Gordon Brown put the top personal tax rate up from 45% to 50% HMRC - the UK equivalent of the IRS - did a study of the 50% tax rate in the UK with Laffer curves in it.
http://webarchive.nationalarch...
Also if you percentage of income tax paid by the top decile vs the top personal tax rate you can see a very Laffer curve like effect
(more details here
https://pastebin.com/JU3exgXL )Here's one for just the Nordic countries. The argument is that they are very comparable because they are so similar. Firstly culturally, particularly the Scandinavian ones. Secondly the share of market income by the richest decile is quite similar.
It is not true that the actual corporate tax rate in the US is higher than the other OECD countries. It's a canard, as in lie, as in bogus.
No it's not and I linked to OECD data to prove it.
And saying 'well the effective tax rate is lower' is not a refutation. I'm sure big corporations do all sorts of deals to reduce their effective tax rate in the US - they shop around the states and pick the one who offers the best incentives.
However if you start a new corporation you get hit with the headline rate, until you grow large enough to corrupt the system, go bust or move your business overseas. Which is why 35% corporate taxes are a bad idea.

Re:WTF police?
Here is a recent picture of the Belfast city hall as proof I'm in NI.
There are genuinely people who just own guns here. My immediate neighbours (who are pretty old) own shotguns for shooting clay pigeons, some people consider me a gun nut, but I don't 'collect' guns, I have them for functional purposes. People further down the street own all own guns for one reason (some were boxing day hunting recently) or another (self defence) and they're not criminals.
Ignore anything this bozo claims about NI; he's making it up.
Yeah, I'm sure you don't even talk to people about firearms to begin with and then somehow assume because it didn't come up in conversation there aren't any.

Re:Sure, when others do it...
It is the burden of proof on the journalist to provide sources, and I am baffled you aren't aware of this. They can't just make up news that makes them feel good or that fills their emotional and political needs - but that is exactly what they are doing, sadly.
ABC News increases orange saturation when filming Trump. Despite two hours of available air time, ABC's Good Morning America on Wednesday skipped a damning New York Times story with a bombshell claim: Hillary Clinton, during the 2016 presidential campaign, was told that Harvey Weinstein was a rapist, but still took his donations and raised money off him.
Anybody - ANYBODY - who still thinks after all this that they can rely on mainstream media like ABC for useful information on the news of the day - presented fairly, offering coverage of all viewpoints, untainted by a concealed agenda - is nothing but a damned fool. Period fucking dot.

And I would love to participate in voting for a party that would serve my needs but in reality that choice isn't on the table. It's the party that will ignore me vs the party that will kill me. Faulty battery maybe, but not with age. If these old batteries had that problem with internal resistance you'd be googling "Why does my phone take 4 hours to charge."

Re:Internet regulation
So, internet regulation is now back to what it was from circa 1980 - 2015? The horror
.... the horror ....Yeah, they have been doing some really shady shit.
. . . the major problem with the FCC’s move: It forced ISPs into an 80-year-old framework designed for the telephone monopolies of a much different era. Those regulations were more concerned about things like controlling market power than, say, promoting innovation.
Except this is exactly the issue we are worried about. How is it a much different era? Did companies stop being greedy? Did they stop consolidating to control massive swaths of customers? How is this era any different?
I don't think companies stopped being greedy. What is different is that the idea the internet should be a level playing field has breathed it's last breath because Google, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, and the rest of the big players who used to fight for net neutrality realised they can afford to pay the extortionists their pound of flesh, that given the utterly corrupt nature of the Trump administration they have to and finally that the real threat is not the extortionists, it is scrappy startups with a better business model and product than them. These startups will from now on be competing at an even greater disadvantage because people have now accepted that is both normal and desirable for the extortionists to ensure that the bandwidth of smaller players is limited and their customer's connections are regularly interrupted by 'technical problems' unless they pay a ransom. The death of net neutrality will work to the advantage of both the extortionists who will now get their regular infusion of mafia style protection payments and the established big players. So in future expect any upcoming competitor who threatens somebody like Google for example and starts to chew up their dominant market share to die a death of a million connection error messages because Google felt threatened and and crapppified their service by pulling the protection money strings so that Google can eventually buy up the corpse and its patents and technology with it. Just ask Eric Schmidt, he'll be the first to tell you how proud he is to call this: "capitalism working as intended" (... and to hell with Adam Smith).

Re:Crazy to bring Trump into this at all
I don't listen to talk radio and never have. You know, dripping with hate and condescension is no way to treat your fellow Americans, but we've long past that point, haven't we? You're just going further and further left, and leaving the rest of us in the dust.
What's funny is I was a solid conservative, and then the Republicans moved so far to the right.... (Hint: my core positions on a lot of things haven't changed, others have, naturally, no one is a rock unless they have challenges of various sorts)
Donna Brazile said after Seth Rich was killed, she kept the blinds down to protect from snipers, possibly Russian.
I'm sure you have that quoted from a reputable source?
Obama knew Russia was engaged in bribery ($500,000 to Bill Clinton), kickbacks ($145 million to the Clinton Foundation) and extortion in order to gain control of North American atomic resources â" yet still approved the 2010 deal to give Moscow control of 20% of America's uranium. FBI Director at the time: Mueller.
They don't have control of 20% of America's uranium, but 20% of the then active refinement capacity. A slightly different thing. Want to tie the rest of your assertions to facts and some reasonable facsimile of a coherent thought process. Just throwing a bunch of unsubstantiated statements against the wall to see what sticks is a pedestrian Trump tactic and in past was automatically a sign of desperation.
The DNC/Clinton machine paid for fake Piss Dossier which was used as justification for FISA warrant to spy on Trump/campaign. Also, Manafort worked for the Podestas in helping seal up the Uranium One deal, and the Podestas worked directly with the Russian government to do it. The smoking gun.
A) Apparently the DNC (haven't seen proof of Clinton yet) paid for additional work on a dossier started by Republicans. Have to hand it to the sellers, they sold the same work twice. It should be noted that the Dems didn't use it though, so did they really pay for it or was it some conspiracy to tar and feather them? As several DNC personnel questioned about the dossier stated that if they knew about this dossier, they would have used it.
B) Ooo, you have a link to potential proof that the Podesta Group worked with Uranium One. Great. What's it prove since as much was already admitted?
C) You provided no proof of Manafort working for the Podestas, the Podestas working for the Russian gov, nor that said dossier was used for anything FISA related. In fact, FISA warrants were already out for tracking various foreign nationals, and Trump's campaign was captured in that net because they communicated with those under surveillance. The Trump campaign itself was never the subject of any FISA warrants.
You're obviously eyeballs deep in misinformation. Before you respond, you should definitely get some citations from reputable sources to back your claims, because right now your assertions are almost wholly unsubstantiated falsehoods.

Global Warming news cycle
1) The Science is Settled
2) "Oh No, things are much worse than we thought". A story based on an outlier which makes apocalyptic predictions
3) If anyone disputes this go to 1). Also accuse them of being an outlier which makes things seem less apocalyptic.
By which process the future is both known with perfect accuracy and continuously getting worse unless we adopt some expensive policy. Actually if you read carefully almost no one globally is adopting these policies. The few places that did - Germany for example - found their CO2 emissions rising, and many that ignored them completely like the US found CO2 emissions falling due to a switch from coal to fracked gas.
And if you look at instrument readings it's clear that the models overstated the amount of warming.
See for example
From this talk
https://www.thegwpf.org/matt-r...
Ironically people like Matt Ridley who get denounced as deniers are making predictions which are near the bottom of the range of the model predictions. Meanwhile environmental activists are making predictions which are way above that range.
