Re:Passwords Still Rule
iPhone users, read this. There are ways to quickly disable the fingerpint scanner and Face ID using the physical buttons on the phone. Easy to do quickly and quietly in case you get arrested. It can also be done through Siri. And Android phones have a similar mechanism I am told.

Re:Magsafe please
Maybe you aren't looking hard enough. This article was easy enough to find: https://www.imore.com/best-usb...
Perhaps better option for now is just buying the right cable.
USB Type C to HDMI 3.1 Cable: https://www.monoprice.com/prod...
USB Type C to DisplayPort 3.1 Cable: https://www.monoprice.com/prod...
I know these cables cost more than those without USB-C but that's the price you pay to get a smaller port on your portable computing device. If they used the full sized desktop connector then the cables would be cheaper but then you are now carrying a larger device for that larger port.
If you got a proper USB-C display then you often also get what is effectively a laptop dock in the display, where it supplies power to charge your laptop and additional ports for things like mouse, keyboard, and Ethernet.
USB-C to replace the old HDMI and mini-DisplayPort ports was a good choice in my opinion. The USB-C ports are smaller and allow for other benefits such as power to be drawn from the display for charging. The only competition I see in this space is the even rarer SuperMHL connector.

Re:30th Annivery NeXTCube
What's your wish list for the new NeXTCube?
Unfuck the Dock. The Dock was always an annoying use of screen real estate when it was at the side of a 4:3 ratio display. You really wanted it at the bottom. But then we moved to 16:9 ratio displays, where there's plenty of room at the side of the display, so what does Apple do? MOVE IT TO THE BOTTOM. Not just that, but when the Dock was pinned to the upper-right, it was in a predictable location. But now that it's in the center-bottom, it grows in both directions, so everything on it moves every time any new element is added. It eliminates the benefits of muscle memory, making using your computer slower. On Windows you can throw the mouse into the appropriate corner and whack the mouse button to pop up the menu that you use to do everything. On MacOS, that only pops up the menu that you use to do some things. Apple is known for being the masters of UI, but they're actually worse at it than even Microsoft.
Um, unless they killed-off the option, you can pick where the Dock is located (bottom or either side).
Yep, it's still there:

Re:If only...
Huh? Did you even try to Google for that? Of course you can revert to an older version. You do need a computer. Phone store employees can help you also, they just want your phone to work so they can bill you for service.

Re:Not really a big deal anymore
Serious question: do you know about the "Live Listen" capability of Airpods?
Here's a good article on it: https://www.imore.com/how-make...
It essentially turns AirPods into hearing boosters.
Check it out and see if it fits your needs. Yeah, you'll have to charge them, but that's pretty painless and the case keeps them charged pretty well.

Re: $1000 phones
I have an iPhone 6 that I use as a test device and an mp3 player. The thing that annoys me about it is that it will continue to nag me about upgrades; like literally every time I unlock it I have to say no don't upgrade. It also nags me about registering an Apple account (no I don't want to attach my account, shut up!). Since I have iTunes set up to talk to this iPhone I can't help my mother in law with hers on my system lest iTunes get hopelessly confused and try to morph her phone into mine. It seems terribly designed.
Boy you are one stupid motherfucker!
Here's how you handle multiple iPhones/iPads on one computer without crossing the streams:

And here is the same information for both Mac or Windows:

Of course, it is possible to have a shiny slick "experience" that helps you get (an extremely limited set of) things done, but even that is extremely hard to get right, qv apple.

...You can't get a phone with Apple's app store installed unless it also has 36 other Apple apps bundled too.
Google says "our app store is part of our bundle of five or six apps". Apple bundles 37 apps with its app store. So Apple does the same thing, times six.
Another stupid Apple Hater.
You can divest your Apple iOS Device of ANY Unwanted Apple Apps. Have been able to do so for some time now.
Do try to keep up, Hater:

Re:why?
If you provide the money for licensing replacement tools and training the staff to use them, we can switch over today!
What 32 bit apps are in use these days. I haven't used anything since maybe 12 or more years.
I've got a few issues with them borking perfectly good 64 bit Programs like Final cut Studio suite. https://www.imore.com/heads-th... .
For this reason, I picked up a nice 27 inch Core2 Duo imac that won't update to High Sierra, and still runs the fully functioning software.
When My main Mac needs replaced in a few years, I'll spend the money on the latest programs then. But again, I cant remember the last time I used a 32 bit app, only that it was over a decade ago.

Re:Uh huh
Hmm....well, if it does sound that good, AND...if Apple gives me a way to disable the Siri "always listening" parts, I might consider buying one for my office.
I"d like a really good sounding BT set up for my office, but I have no need nor want to bug my surroundings with an always on listening device talking to the internet.
You can disable Siri on HomePod.
Also, it doesn't really start listening until it hears "Hey, Siri", which it decodes locally.

Re: Android, therefore to be expected...
Fuck, you're a cunt. Access the file system and use it, not just browse it.
One of the most infuriating times helping an iPhone user try and download some meditation mp3's she purchased. The instructions were to right click and save file, obviously for desktop/windows users.
So I said to just long press the link and you can just save it. NOPE, not fucking possible. You can't save a motherfucking file from Web like any other fucking device. I was floored.
Google around, need an app like dropbox. Go to install dropbox, a free app, and need to enter credit card and password had to be entered at least 4 times without leaving app store. It was so fucking frustrated because it would literally be native and simple to save a goddamn mp3. This is one of the reasons I don't consider iPhone users to be "power users" or even "productive".
Can't wait for your reply where you say this basic functionality just got added to the 11th fucking iOS.
Jesus, calm down Hater! I used the wrong term. The iOS 11 "Files" App is a lot more than just a File Browser. Is it a full-blown version of the macOS Finder for iOS. Not yet. But it is pretty good for a version 1 App:
https://www.imore.com/files-ap...
I don't have iOS 11 on any of my iOS devices; so I can't specifically speak to your example; but it sounds like it probably would work like you are expecting.
Does that help, Cunt?

Re:okay, but HOW IS THIS WORSE THAN A THUMBPRINT?
That's an option, it can be turned off for convenience and you can bet it will be on a lot of phones.
So now at least you admit that your victims have to turn off options for your crazy schemes to work. Looooonie.
-
Re:How is that worse than a thumbprint?
Actually the iPhone x requires the user to be "awake and paying attention to the lock screen" to unlock. It will not unlock for an unconscious person.
Actually, you can turn that requirement off. Then it will.
-
Re:okay, but HOW IS THIS WORSE THAN A THUMBPRINT?
That's an option, it can be turned off for convenience and you can bet it will be on a lot of phones.
-
Re:okay, but HOW IS THIS WORSE THAN A THUMBPRINT?
One out of 50,000 people have similar enough fingerprints to you to unlock your phone, only one out of 1 million people have similar enough faces to unlock your phone.
It's much easier to identify the one in 1 million who might unlock your phone with their face than it is to identify the one in 50,000 who might do so with their fingerprints, unless you already have a fingerprint to compare to, in which case why do you need to find that one in 50,000 in the first place? Totally irrelevant. Plus, I can change which finger is registered but I only have one face.
In your link they trained it on both faces.
You assume that, of course.
That's bullshit, you're completely wrong, stop getting all your info from Breitbart.
You read this, just like I did:
Face ID is even attention-aware. It recognizes if your eyes are open and looking towards the device. This makes it more difficult for someone to unlock your iPhone without your knowledge (such as when you are sleeping).
The difference is that I've also handled the actual device. I've seen the configuration options, I've tried them, and I've unlocked an iPhone X trained on my face with my eyes closed.
While looking for a screenshot of the settings screen, I did learn that the default changed in the final release, so I'll correct my earlier statement: the more secure option is now the default. It was not the default on the development model my Apple engineer friend showed me, and it can still be disabled.Seriously, does the fact that Apple exists bother you so much that you feel the need to manufacture lies on the internet, and then desperately hope that noone will call you on your bullshit?
The MacBook Pro in my lap says "no." Does the fact that Apple is not a flawless company and they do, in fact, make mistakes, often involving security, bother you so much that you have to attack people who point them out?
-
Re:Still ok for general consumers
It defaults you to use 6-digit and doesn't make the UI to decline obvious, but if you are persistent you can make it accept a 4-digit passcode.
I'd say it's pretty damned obvious how to select what type of passcode/passphrase you want:
-
Re: So basically
Aren't you ignoring the fact that the Note 8 came out only weeks before the iPhone X? We're not talking six months or a year difference. A few weeks.
Are you implying that you know the internal schedule of the development of these phones and the displays by Apple and Samsung? Do share. If you don't, GTFO. You do know that the Samsung that made the Galaxy phones and the Samsung that design and manufacture displays are two separate entities, right?
If you're going to compare an LCD display with an OLED one, it seems you're willing to partake in unfair comparisons.
Aside from better black level, LCD used to have advantages over OLED.
from DisplayMate:OLED Display Evolution What is particularly significant and impressive is that Samsung has been systematically improving OLED display performance with every Galaxy generation since 2010, when we started tracking OLED displays. The first notable OLED Smartphone, the Google Nexus One, came in decidedly last place in our 2010 Smartphone Display Shoot-Out. In a span of just six years OLED display technology is now challenging and even exceeding the performance of the best LCDs. The Galaxy S7 continues this impressive systematic improvement in OLED displays and technology
A fact is a fact. Apple used to procure the displays for their high end phones from multiple sources. For iPhone X, they can only go to Samsung (and LG later next year), because only Samsung has the capability and capacity to produce them. The iPhone 7 lackluster display over 6 month older S7 is a testament that Apple software implementation, if there were any, has little to no effect on the quality of the phone display
Making OLED display is hard, and Samsung get it right. From the day of HTC Nexus one OLED display (by Samsung) which placed last in 2010 to iPhone X at the top, Samsung has been improving their OLED technology, without Apple involvement. -

Crap like MacOS is the reason why Linux is so popular among tech savvy people. We're tired of it.

Fuck you, and fuck whoever modded me down. Idiots, all.

"We learned that when testing battery life on Mac notebooks, Consumer Reports uses a hidden Safari setting for developing web sites which turns off the browser cache. This is not a setting used by customers and does not reflect real-world usage. Their use of this developer setting also triggered an obscure and intermittent bug reloading icons which created inconsistent results in their lab. After we asked Consumer Reports to run the same test using normal user settings, they told us their MacBook Pro systems consistently delivered the expected battery life."

Re:Apple is an interface company
Apple creates superior interfaces. [...] Well. Thought. Out.
Oh, come off it. Some of the things they've produced are absolute shit or just badly ripped off. Not everything, but some of it for sure.
- The iOS notification center is and has always been a far cry from that in Android. In fact, a lot of the newer iOS features are kludgy us-too implementations.
- XCode.
- Multimonitor support in the OSX interface is crap.
- OSX's half-assed sortof fullscreen solution is simply dreadful.Again: they have some nice stuff, but they sure as hell do not deserve the praise you're trying to hand them.
We had a user who wasn't able to uninstall our app on his iPhone last week. Turns out he was pressing on the icon like he always did, but on his new iPhone that was now a '3D touch' gesture. Apple managed to make what was already a silly, shitty way of uninstalling apps (try hitting the minute x-target of the top left icon reliably the first time) so bad that their "It just works."/"It's so intuitive"-users require support to perform it.
But luckily there are online guides on how to uninstall an app: http://www.imore.com/how-move-...

You can pair Bluetooth HR monitors to the Apple Watch easily. What do you mean "can't use"? Google "pair bluetooth hrm to apple watch", get over six hundred thousand results, read one page. http://www.imore.com/how-pair-... for example. There *are* things that could be improved, though (the list of workout apps that stay on top could be longer, for instance).

So use AirDrop. After all, if this is a problem, you have both a new MacBook Pro and an iPhone.
Hint: AirDrop uses TLS on an ad-hoc WiFi network set up between the devices.
If TLS isn't secure enough for you, stop using the Internet right now.

Re:40% profit, not 400%
I know this may come as a shock, but your numbers appear to have little basis in reality. Instead, let's work with Apple's latest financial statements and draw our conclusions from there.
Focusing on page 3, here's what we can quickly glean using some simple arithmetic with their numbers from last quarter:
- They have a 38% margin after you deduct the cost of sales
- They have a 24% margin after you deduct operating expenses
- They have an 18.4% margin after you deduct taxesAccording to page 28, operating expenses is where R&D, advertising, employee salaries, and other day-to-day costs fall, so it's safe to say that your claim regarding a "100% profit margin" has no factual basis, despite you being a random person on the Internet who has an opinion. Rather, depending on how we define "profit", we'd peg it at more like 18-24%.
As for why their margin isn't what you claimed, you probably grabbed your $200 number from this report that was widely circulated a few years ago, but it neglected to consider a number of costs beyond the bill of materials (BOM) and manufacturing. For instance, there's no mention of the cost to ship components to where they'll be assembled, the cost to package the final product, capital expenditures to customize or scale manufacturing, nor of the cost to ship the final product to its destination. These teardowns routinely come in FAR under the actual cost, and that trend has only been getting worse these last few years. It got so bad, in fact, that Tim Cook even took some time to address it last year.
Disclaimer: The numbers on page 3 (and here) represent their full product line, so I will readily admit that we can't take them as hard and fast numbers for iPhones specifically. That said, other statements I've read over the years have indicated that iPhone margins fall in line with their margins for their products as a whole, so we shouldn't expect them to be much different, if at all, given that iPhones account for 57% of their net sales, according to page 25.

Re:Android version
Making you pay to be able to run the app in the background without you realizing that's what you're doing.
Otherwise you need to walk with the phone unlocked, and the app active ( unless a mod exists to keep apps in the background believing they're in the foreground).
It's similar to Nintendo's pay for this toy to unlock a game character.
Seems like you need to do that anyway:
http://www.imore.com/pokemon-g...
"Your device still needs to be running Pokémon Go in the foreground, so you're not saving much battery life, and you'll get those vibrations from your iPhone or Android device, anyway."
-
Re:I don't understand these warnings.
Yeah I'm not getting these warnings.
You may not as long as you know the limit of how to play the game.
Until the pokemon comes out of hiding you can't tell where they are so trespassing to find them makes no sense.
Why would it make no sense? According to http://www.imore.com/pokemon-g... , you are notified by your phone that it is out. Some kids (or not bright people) may keep their eyes glued to the phone instead. As a result, trespassing could easily occur (get excited about the game and pay no attention on where they are going).
Then once they're out of hiding you tap to bring up the capture screen. There's no need to get closer to capture em.
You are correct. Again, some kids get excited, look at the phone, and play it right away instead of "moving away to a safe zone" to initiate the capturing.
I hope you would try to understand how others think too...
-

This entire discussion may be moot, as it appears there won't be a 5K monitor coming from Apple at all; at least, not in the near future.

Re:iPod Classic?

http://www.imore.com/iflash-co... $60 buys you a 256GB flash drive from a dozen different retailers
Apple just loves to artificially inflate the cost of memory in it's devices to drive up profits. They could easily make a cheap, large iPod
...but it would invalidate why they charge so much to get 128GB in an iPhone. That is how YOU solve the problem of upgrading YOUR HDD designed iPod. That's really not the way a company would go about making an iPod Classic SSD edition. But hey, go for it. I'm sure iPod Classics are pretty easy to get on eBay.
Never said it was challenging to do. I said they didn't care to bother based on the way the market is today. I'm staring at my iPod right now. It probably hasn't been plugged in to charge for months. Truth is, I'm RARELY without WiFi or Cell coverage. When I am there's usually some cached music on my phone, plus tons of downloaded Podcasts. My bluetooth headphones have a few gigs of memory for downloaded music. And eventually, I'll get off the plane and go back to having my entire library available for streaming. And even THAT is old fashioned since it seems the market is moving away from streaming YOUR library and towards subscription services such as Spotify or Apple Music.
I know it's hard to believe, but Apple isn't going to just drop an SD card adapter into the iPod Classic manufacturing line. First of all, they'd have to spin up an iPod Classic manufacturing line. And right there is probably reason enough not to bother. It's just not worth it.
Millions of iPod Touches and tens of millions of iPhones. 128gb and less space because streaming. That's just what they're focused on. I'm not saying guys like you don't pine for an alternative. I'm just saying guys like you aren't really where Apple is focused. -

Without Flash, Adobe or Microsoft installed on their machines and without running external 3rd-party software, what do OS X users have to be afraid of?
Bold mine. So you're depending on the user to not go around a security feature to get a shiny app. But these "Steam Stealers" mainly work on the principle of fooling users into installing trojans. Even OS X users like forbidden fruit, which is why you can find instructions on how to install 3rd party apps in OS X, and isn't it funny how they mention Steam?

You need physical access to put it in DFU mode
What they're talking about is putting the phone into Device Firmware Update mode, like this. Only then will they be able to update it remotely and on the newest iPhones that'd also wipe the encryption keys. But not on the model in question here.

Well guess what? There is no e-book format that allows that. That isn't what e-books were designed for. There are non e-book formats designed to do that (HTML, etc). Use those, THAT is what progress is.
Maybe not for the lame-ass Kindle; but if you want to publish your e-Book for the iPad instead (or also), Apple makes a truly wonderful (and free!) Textbook-Authoring Tool that will allow you to do all that you have asked for, and much more.

I have had a Kindle App on my iPad for years. Don't use it, because it feels like one big advertisement. But it's there.
Same with the Amazon Prime TV App (whatever it's called). It has been on the Apple App Store for however long since they submitted it.
And it is AMAZON that REFUSES to submit their App for Apple's TVOS Store. Not Apple. -
Re:Love that this is modded troll
I did read the links. The first was an example of Google taking the offensive in a patent lawsuit (which you said didn't exist). The second was Google using patents to stifle innovation and bring down smaller developers. In each of these examples the smaller companies are getting screwed.
Here's a different example:
http://www.imore.com/google-de...
To quote the article:
With these lawsuits, Google is doing what Google feel they have to do. Just like Apple's doing with their lawsuits. That's fine. Any company sufficiently large is indistinguishable from evil. Just be candid with your users about it. Tell them you're going thermonuclear. Don't hold up a dove and play a hippie jingle, all the while lighting up the napalm.
Google is just like any other large tech company; they're playing the patent game.
