Re:Market Saturation?
A 2012 Nexus 7 is still a damn good tablet. For that same $200 you can now buy an Atom based tablet with 9.7" 2,048x1,536 pixel screen, 2GB RAM, 32GB flash, 3G and GPS, dual booting Android and Windows 8.1 (full version, not the cut down RT): http://akiba-pc.watch.impress....
There hasn't been a reason to spend $525 on a tablet for more than two years now, or even much reason to upgrade. Tablets are mainly about media consumption, and pretty much anything on the market will do that more than adequately.

Re:Not sure Sony are going to do much with this
1. Yes, Sony has a bad track record when it comes to marketing VR glasses. (Did you even know that VR glasses for the PS2 exist?) However, with all the press Oculus has generated and the competition getting ready, Sony may be willing to make a bigger bet on VR.
2. FB seems to be going for a hands off approach that won't hinder the adoption of the Oculus Rift. I'm at least willing to take a wait and see approach before condemning the buyout. Apart from that, core members of Oculus like John Carmack and Michael Abrash as well as Mark Zuckerberg seem to be inspired to implement the Metaverse as described in Snow Crash. This is likely a medium term goal that comes on top of the general Oculus platform.
3. Valve has clearly stated that they are not interested in producing their own VR hardware. And the former core members of Valves VR team are now employed by Oculus. Valve will likely promote good VR hardware solutions and software and provide a uniform VR API. It's also probable that we'll see recommended bundles of VR hardware, Steam boxes and the Steam controller.

Re:Syberian Post Office?
If you can read Japanese the definition is in this page.
Basically there is an anonymous board in Japan known as 2ch, which is the "father" of 2chan.net and "grandfather" of 4chan and all other *chan websites. Sometimes your IP is blocked for some reason and you can't post. So you used this Siberian Post Office as some sort of proxy and it posts for you. -
Empire Earth
Remember the Prophet units in the Empire Earth games? In ancient times they started out as religious shamans. But once you played up to modern times they were nutjobs wearing "The End Is Near!" sandwich boards. They could cause earthquakes.

not even fastest in Japan
There are several different companies in Japan that offer speeds faster than 160Mbit/s.
One of them is Japan's largest telephone company: NTT (Nippon Telephone and Telegraph).
(there are several different companies that provides gigabit services and I think another was mentioned before on slashdot).Anyways, NTT offers what's called Flets Hikari (Flets "Light" as in fiberoptic).
Though it is limited in deployment to locations that are properly wired, speeds can be upto 1Gbit/s up and down as well as other versions that offer 622Mbit/s down and 156Mb/s up.
Mainly, however, they seem to emphasis 1Gbit/s as being their maximum on their own pageeoNet is another that provides gigabit services (they offer tiers from 100Mbit, 200Mbit, and 1Gbit)
KDDI, yet another company, announced their intentions of deploying 1Gbit/s speeds WAY back in 2003.
This is just one of the examples why I'm awry about NYT...they really need to hire a better fact checker.

Re:no GBA?!
Update: Here's a photo of the DSi circuit board, with only a single ARM chip on it:
http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2008/1101/dsi50.jpg
The ARM7 is definitely gone.
That, or the DSi IOP is on the same die as the CPU. Can you provide a comparison shot of a DS Lite PCB with two ARM CPUs on it?

Re:Not as crippled as the XBox 360actually, it seems that you're wrong about that although it's not been verified for certain: With some help from Engadget Japan's Ittousai, we have found diagrams indicating the switch from Emotion Engine + Graphic Synthesizer chip to just a graphics synthesizer chip, implying the software emulation was partially hardware-supported (as noted by many commenters). If that's the case, then, the ability to download emulation software later may not be possible. We don't want to spread misinformation, so for further clarification we have contacted Sony for a definitive answer. you can see the diagram here: http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2007/0314/kaigai344.htm
this is from Sony back in March right before the 80Gb was introduced with a software emulator but still with the graphics chip: "Q: Does this mean that the PS2 hardware chips have been removed completely and replaced with software-only emulation? A: The original PS3 used the Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesizer to emulate PS2 titles. With the latest European specification we have removed the Emotion Engine, retaining the graphics chip." - source: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2099538,00.asp

Myths, myths, and more myths...
Every now and then the same myths about the Japanese mobile market come up. Here's what we've seen on Slashdot today:
- "Japanese live in small houses, have small fingers, and they just love small things." "The Japanese" are not some kind of lilliputian race. In fact, these days their phones are BIGGER than most current GSM models. There is indeed space for a PC in most homes, although it's true that the level of PC ownership is not as high as in the US.
- "Japanese are all crowded together in the cities, so it's easier to build wireless networks." Urban population percentage: Japan - 65%, USA - 80%, Canada - 80%. In reality, the proportion of people living in the densest cities is more like Canada (the biggest wireless backwater in the world). Moreover, once you start getting REALLY dense, it becomes even harder to build mobile networks because you end up having to put base stations in weird places instead of just erecting a tower.
- "Mobile phones are bling in Asia." Commonly uttered by those who don't understand that Japan is not Hong Kong. High-end "fashion phones" do not drive features in Japan. DoCoMo's flagship 900 series phones have all retailed around the $200 mark since forever. The bling that you sometimes see on the street is all aftermarket dress-up and doesn't have much to do with new features. In fact, these days, the hottest market is the creation of high usability, large-type phones for the senior market.
- "Using the phone as a modem is expensive in Japan." As of 2007, also not true anymore. I posted a thread before realizing there were more myths to bust. Flat rate data for laptops is also coming from the Big Three carriers within the next month or so.
I could go on, but when it comes to Japan, be careful whose information you trust. Lots of people who claim to know about Japan don't speak even speak the language, which continues to contribute to a lot of misinformation.
Myths aside, I think the real reasons Japan is so far ahead have a little bit to do with culture and language, a little more to do with urban density causing carriers to push low-bandwith services (i.e., text messaging) coupled with public transport and portability factors, and a lot more to do with insanely poor telecom regulation in other areas of the world (here's looking at you, Canada).
There are no really good reasons why we can't have the same quality of mobile services as Japan -- if only we demanded it (in large masses) from our governments, telecom carriers, and handset manufacturers. Thankfully, in the wake of iPhone and the unlocking debate it started, we might see some positive change. When we're on par with Japan, I'm going to laugh at all the pundits who claimed there was something unique about Japanese people, society, or culture that makes them so mobile-centric.

Re:Please excuse the drool
My Armada M300 (which I still use) has a cylindrical battery which attaches to the rear of the laptop, covering the rear ports. When the lid is closed, it might, very remotely, look like (part) of the hinge. Here's the HP/Compaq page with an illustration, and a here's a photo with the docking station and the battery visible. It's also possible to replace either the floppy or the CDROM in the docking station with a battery, but I was never able to find one.

Assuming Linux or FreeBSD is acceptable ...
...why not build yourself a custom Knoppix/Ubuntu/freesbie CD or DVD. Most "run from CD" distros allow r/w access to NTFS partitions and for customization files to be written to an USB memstick.
Or, if you really need Solaris, and you can open your box, get the current day equivalent of one of these - http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/AKIBA/hotline/20000 930/image/rescue22.jpg. I set up a PIII 600 powered one running FreeBSD in my friend's box at Boeing and nobody's the wiser. Some of her coworkers had wondered why there was a KVM switch on her desk, since they could only see one computer under the desk, but, now that she moved that out of the way nobody knows nothing and, she is as happy and productive as she can be. -
Re:Kind of funny.
How the parent got modded so high is baffling. Ubisoft has NEVER said the AI in the 360 will be more intelligent than the PS3. Jade Raymond said that the XBox360 has "improved threading" during X06, but no where did she say what it was compared to. It was clearly FUD that Microsoft got Ubisoft to spread.
And how such a false statement of saying the PS3 will be limited to 256MB of video RAM has been modded as Interesting on Slashdot is absurd. Look at the top level diagram. The RSX can access an additional 256MB of XDR through the Cell. The RSX was designed to work with the Cell, that is why it is different than the conventional console hardware setup.
It's hype all over again, for sure. Every company does it, but it looks like you are being lead into believing the Microsoft FUD-hype instead. -

personal favoritesamsung mp3 phone from 2000
It was pretty sleek for its time, 32 MB memory for mp3 files that you could upload via a LPT printer cable
:) It fitted me 16 led zeppelin songs on low compression and saved my mornings and a very boring holiday. Battery life was about a day when using the mp3 function. Nice thing: it still works! The headphones broke, though, so I cannot use the mp3 function anymore, unless I get the specific replacement cable which will cost the same as the phone probably :) -
Re:i wonder
I'm sure someone with superior technical knowledge on this subject will correct me before long, but I believe it's because they were able to essentially include much of the original PS hardware on a single chip in the PS2. It's not quite at the point where they can emulate the PS2 the same way.
Actually, that's exactly what Sony did with the PS3 - the PS3 motherboard contains the same EE+GS chip that powers the slim PS2.
You can see it on the left side of this photo. -

As usual...
...PC Watch bought one and took it apart.
Impressions:
- That's one huge cooling fan!
- Why did they use a Seagate drive, when Seagate is known for sucking more power than just about anybody else?
- Not as many components on the MB as you might expect for a first revision.
- The ATI RSX has its video memory on the module, but not in-core.
According to posts on various Japanese sites, there also seem to be a few problems.
- The unit gets hot. Very hot.
- A couple of people reported the unit powering off during the software update, which permanently bricked the unit.
- The browser can't play Flash. -
Jeez - Zonk Just Shut The Fuck Up
Your year long anit-Sony/PS3 FUD campaign has been a total waste of everyone on Slashdot's time. The Slashdot community has been begging you to go find somewhere else to wage your idiotic and sad little war against 'teh evil Sony'.

Re:Different countries has different situations
A senior productive manager of Windows in Microsoft Japan clearly stated that the delay was made for the marketing reason. They got hundreds of complaints from many *corporate* customers after the push of WinXP SP2 from. Well, at least they can learn, sometimes.
For those who can read Japanese, here's the link to a related article. -
Re:What "launch window titles" really meansI know you aren't the original propagator of this FUD, but...
"1. The unit draws 2X the current of the 360. The means the unit has to dissipate 2X the heat of the 360, so don't tell me Sony isn't going to have overheating issues. And since they (proudly) display that they don't use a brick (ever get the feeling the PS3 is just Sony trying to knock-off the Xbox1?), the heat sources are concentrated inside the unit. It is appropriate that the thing looks like a George Forman Grill."
This FUD just refuses to go away, doesn't it? The actual unit has a power supply rated at 3.2A*120V, so 384W is the absolute upper limit on power consumption. There is usually a safety margin in these things, so the actual average consumption should be significantly less than that. For comparison, I understand the 360 draws 205W from a power supply rated at 600W, so 2x is just plain hyperbole."2. The controllers have non-removable rechargable batteries in them. Once they go, the controller has to be thrown away. I guess Sony found a place to dump their exploding lithium ion batteries..."
Again, this was a misunderstanding by a game journalist in Japan that has been corrected (sorry, Japanese link)--the battery is in fact removable, but will not be sold publicly for now. Which brings us to the next point...."3. Because of the non-removable batteries, you don't have the convenience of swapping batteries mid-game and continuing to play wireless. This is one of those features that isn't flashy, but once you've used it, you can't live without it. On the 360, if your batteries die mid-game you can quickly swap in another battery pack. Microsoft also gave you the option of using standard batteries or rechargable packs."
...which is the same as how Nintendo DS's battery works, and I've never heard anyone complaining about that. (And if you own one, you know its battery lasts long enough that it really is not a problem in real life.) If non-removable batteries for a handheld is a non-issue, how bad can it be for a living game controller? It is an issue for the 360 only because the controller battery is rated to last a measly 7 hours. Meanwhile, the battery in the PS3 controller is rated to last 30 hours per charge, and if your gaming session lasts longer than that you really need to go get some sleep instead.By the way, you don't have to throw away the controller if the battery dies; you can have the battery replaced by a technician, just like with compact MP3 players. I don't know how much that will cost, but hopefully it will be significantly less than ~$45, which is the cost of a new controller.

Re:What else is new?
This is the same Squaresoft prima donna we saw ten years ago. "Cater to us or your silly little console will go down the tubes."
Last year Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix, announced that Kingdom Hearts II would be, "The best game to ever grace the PS2" (or tied for best, it's a little ambiguous, but WROONG nonetheless). It's amazing how conceited they are.I still feel like Enix is the big loser with this merger. Enix was that good, Squaresoft just thought they were.
Umm, name a game Enix was developing in-house at the time of the merger. Heck, name one it was developing in-house within ten years of the merger. They might be a good publisher/producer, but their games weren't actually made by them, and were created mainly by outside companies, so I don't really think you can ascribe any sort of identity to them as far as game design goes. -

Old tech - someone already did this
During the dot com era, a startup called desktop.com already did this. Here's a screenshot of their web os. http://internet.watch.impress.co.jp/www/article/1
9 99/0922/bw5.jpg
It was a lot prettier than the YouOS.
Desktop.com failed and now their domain name is owned by someone else and is apparently selling a search bar.
The idea of having a traditional OS like environment in a Web browser has already failed in the past. -

Re:Article completely misses the point
By calling it 'Cell local memory' the inquirer has confirmed they have confused the RSX's Local Memory (i.e. graphics memory) with the Cell's Local Store (roughly a processor cache but more important then normal due to the Cell's architecture). Normally the would be little need for the CPU to take directly to the graphics memory, it would just tell the GPU to pull it from main memory. However with the Cell's SPEs meant to account for up to 30% of the shader though put this would be likely to have an effect. Luckily the RSX was always designed to use main memory as as well as its local memory for rendering. It has large caches to offset the increased latency and slower speed. If these figures are right I can only presume that Sony indents all Cell/RSX co-operation to happen in main memory. However the architecture diagrams from GDC 2006 make this all seem highly suspicious: http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20060329

Re:This was via...
The entire thing is just an English translation of the original article at Game Watch: http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20051207
/ 3dwa.htm. Posted there last year, actually. -
Shadow of the Colossus also used HDR
Here is neat technical write up (use the fish) on how HDR (and other things) were accomplished on the PS2 within Shadow of the Colossus.

It is really amazing technology ... especially when you don't notice it. -

MS has done this before in Japan - DIDN'T HELP
Yeah, swanky cafes do great for selling games and systems, almost as well as kicks to the crotch. How so quickly we all forget the recent past.
Dateline: October 5, 2002
Looks like a nice place, right? How many original Xboxes were sold in Japan, again? -
Dude, you're WAY behind on your historyOne court case later, SoftMap loses against the publishers and "No Resale" becomes enforceable in Japan.
For about one year, in Osaka only (it's "Sofmap" BTW). Then the Osaka high court overturned the lower court's ruling. Meanwhile, in Tokyo, the lower court ruled against the publishers, and the high court upheld that ruling. Finally, in 2002, the Supreme Court upheld both high court rulings (Japanese link), reasoning that the doctrine of first sale overrules any distribution rights. So those "no resale" stickers are utterly meaningless now, and nobody pays any attention to them.

There's no support from SCEI
Accoding to impress (sorry, in Japanese), SCEI has no intention to provide support for users whose PSP are broken due to this trojan horse, saying this happens only when they are using their PSP in an (unsupported|illegitimate|unauthorative) way.
