America is actually populated by Americans
Guys this scare didn't happen in some backwater school this time like it has before (http://kotaku.com/gaming/crime/xbox-live-leads-t
o -school-lockdown-231374.php). Everyone on these posts has sworn how stupid people would have to be to think these things were bombs (and they are totally correct) but who was it that thought these things were bombs then? This isn't those Americans everyone likes to rag on for being easy to scare-monger. This was in a clued-up metro area in touch with world affairs. They are some of the most informed citizens in the U.S.A. This is you, or your neighbour, or your Dad, or your friend.
I just moved to America, and I'm shocked and horrified how many edgy conversations you guys have about how the world is after you. It's egocentric to believe the rest of the world has nothing to do but plot your demise, but that's beside the point. It's up to every individual to get over this crap. If you the citizens of America stop having everyday conversations about how terrorists may or may not be beating at the gates, you'll stop giving them power.
And if I hear another person invoke 9/11 like it's an excuse for this kind of farce to ever take place I'll just lmao. I hardly think you can compare a hijacked aeroplane to a kid's toy flipping you off. I'm just saying that you can't make an association between what is clearly a marketing ploy and a terrorist attack unless you are trying your damndest to do so. -
Re:Bitterness
It's possible that I misremember the PS2 brouhaha, and from the newer games, I've never seen target renders for Resistance or Killzone. I have, however, seen target renders and target render movies for Motorstorm, and the japanese version does most definitely not look like the targets (for example, check out the awesome dust behind the cars in the targets - that's simply not there in the real game). It is a good looking game, but it's not what we've seen in the movies.
Dunno what Sony will do about the controllers. Maybe they'll enable support for more than four controllers. The funny thing is that there are Wii games (Bomberman '93 comes to mind) which support five controllers (four Wii controllers and a GC controller). As I've said, supporting more than four controllers would have been a great feature for the PS3 to have, and it's a pity that they don't (currently) support it.

Re:Surprised
Absolutely, positively, INCORRECT. Sony did not SELL 1.8m PS3's...they SHIPPED 1.8 million PS3's. Many of them are sitting in stores, right next to the ones that were returned by many eBayers unopened because they eBay sales tanked. THEY ARE NOT SELLING. Period. End of story. Sitting there collecting dust. They are not coming in and going right out and then being restocked - they are just sitting there. You honestly are the first person I've seen with the balls to argue otherwise, because arguing anything but is like saying New Coke wasn't so bad.
Bollocks. Clearly they were sold and clearly Sony have manufactured and sold many thousands more since. Besides, MS claimed 10 million sold too, but guess what - they meant shipped as well and went through all kinds of verbal gymnastics to explain why sold meant shipped. Either way that's the only metric these companies have the ability to actually say with certainty. Just accept it and move on.
Dude, I'm sorry, but I guess we just can't finish the conversation, because you are simply talkin' crazy and now you are bringing up whole other topics when your basic knowledge seems to be extremely adverse to reality. You obviously do not follow the industry, because the facts at the base of your reasoning are simply WRONG. There is no other word for it. I mean, you must not even read
/. regularly. That's fine and all - not everyone needs to stay on top of such things, but if you are going to tell someone they are "completely incorrect" or that their simple facts are "bollucks", you really should know what the hell you are talking about.Sony announced after Christmas that it had SHIPPED 1.8 million units. Go to their website - look at the press release. The wording was very exact. They did not SELL 1.8 million units. This is fact reported by every gaming site and many mainstream publications.
There have been dozens of articles about how poorly all this has been going for the PS3. Either you are blind or you do not read.
Here is an article about retailers having PS3's sitting on their shelves for a week or more (70% in this case!).
Here is an article (with nifty graphs and everything!) that explains how the PS3 on eBay market CRASHED...before CHRISTMAS! It was so bad that scalpers were returning them to the stores because they weren't worth the bother to ship because they were all over retail stores and, again, no one was buying them (nor are they now).
Here is an article that confirms that Sony shipped 1m units to the US, and less than 2/3 of them sold. You will also note that this article is also about analysts cutting predictions for the PS3 based on it's bad sales - there are again dozens on the topic if you search.
Finally, here's yet another article detailing just how slow demand is. Stores are stocked - people don't want 'em.
I didn't mean for this to turn into a PS3 sucks debate, but man, you are just so ill informed about this topic one can't communicate with you on the others. My only point, from the beginning, is that PS3 sales are not going to win this format war. You have gone on and on like a friggin' press release about all this peripheral bullshit regarding the PS3, and how I don't understand "what Sony intends the PS3 to be" - we can't have that discussion while you are so ill informed about how the PS3 is really faring in the marketplace.
You'll also notice that those articles are from a selection of times - one before XMAS, one right after, one in early Jan, one last week. Before you start saying that "X-site is wrong, blah blah" I encourage you to seek out the other news stories out there abou

Reality Disagrees
You're wrong. Adults very much play with dolls and toy cars and read children's books. I even have an uncle who collects toy cars, and has a huge slotcar game in his garage. Many of the adults I know read books from Eoin Colfer or J. K. Rowlings. All in all, adults generally do whatever they like to do without thinking too much about the impression it may give to others.
Here's another interesting tidbit: Kids prefer the PS3 and 360 over the Wii. I actually think it's mostly adults who buy the Wii. Kids prefer to have violent games which impress their pals, regardless of whether they are fun to play. Adults play whatever they think is fun.

Re:Interesting that he's not interested in Wii dev
Carmack: You know, we've never had a good relationship with Nintendo, from really early products we did a long time ago. And for the most part, we just said, "Fine." We're busy with other stuff, and we just haven't been that tight with Nintendo. On the up side, I really do respect what they're doing, where for years, I've been saying--you probably heard me at QuakeCon--I will go on about how IO devices are where the really big differences are going to be made in gaming. You can get ten times the graphics power, and you can make a prettier picture, but when somebody makes a new IO device that really changes the way that people interact with the game, that's going to have a larger benefit there. So I'm really pleased with what they're doing with the Wii and with the DS--and they're doing innovative things. But our current generation of game technology is not targeted at the Wii. Maybe that was a mistake on our part originally, but we have been looking strictly at the 360, PS3 and PC as what we want to simultaneously develop on. We probably aren't going to be able to hit the Wii with the same technology platform.
Source.
This is actualy a dupe of an older /. report of the orginal article, as opposed to this one where it is a /. report of a summery of the original article.
So yes. Carmack (and thus ID) have stayed away from Nintendo because of bad dealings, and no real NEED to work with them. This time around he is thinking it might have been a bad idea to stay away from the Wii.
My bet is that once they have the current Tech that they are working on up and running he will look into making stuff for the Wii. And I for one look foward to it.
Also, he is looking to port Orcs and Elves to the DS. Source -
Wii is for adults, "mature" games are for children
but lets not forget that more 'serious' gamers need more serious games; with mature themes.
I think it's the other way around. It's mainly children who buy games for their "mature themes." A survey I recently read on Kotaku.com seems to come to the same conclusion: Children prefer the "mature" consoles.
According to a recent poll by Weekly Reader, kids prefer the Playstation 3 over the 360 or Wii. The poll asked kids 5 to 18 which gaming system, PS3, Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360, they would prefer to have.
Survey: Children Prefer PS3 Most, Wii Least
This fits my personal experience. Adults never have an issue playing games like Super Monkey Ball, while kids complain that it's too childish. I think it's quite simple: Kids want to be like adults and thus prefer "adult" games, while adults already are adults and can stop pretending and start playing what they actually like.
In other words, Mario Kart is more mature than Doom. It's the Xbox that has childish games, not the Wii.

Re:This is news because...
As you can see, it's a lot closer than this article would lead you to believe. The Wii sold in huge numbers its first 2 weeks, and it's now dropped off. The PS3 has held steady. They're almost neck and neck at this point.
Those are actual sales, not "surveys".
These are actual sales numbers in Japan too ... They're not nearly neck in neck
Wii ( 158,750 ) vs. PS3 ( 68,500 ) Japanese Chart for Week Ending 07th January 2007

PS3 ( 43,500 ) Japanese Chart for Week Ending 19th November 2006

Total: Wii ( 1,153,000 ) vs. PS3 ( 525,250 )

Wii Software vs PS3 Software
Now if you believe this and this the Wii is selling every unit it ships while there are PS3 units on the shelf which means that the Wii could sell more if Nintendo could build more units.
It may not be the case for long but currently the Wii is owning the PS3 in Japan. -

Microtransactions
They're coming, but they haven't been announced yet. I've always said that this is the kind of microtransaction I wholeheartedly support.
Not I. Not when publishers are withholding content already on the disk and then reselling it via these so-called microtransactions. The XBL marketplace as a whole is great, but it's rife with this type of gouging these days. -
Re:Fools.
Welcome to the downside of free speech. Deal with it. Seriously, if you don't like it - don't view it - but the opinion that you should be able to categorize and then subdue some content based on your fragile sensibilities is not only fascist, but downright ignorant. Free speech comes with the requirement that people can self regulate what they choose to consume.
Hmm... interesting thing about 'Free Speech' is that it's name is often misconstrued. Free speech often implies that you can say anything or do (in a creative context) anything you want, which is not true. You are not allowed to lie or make false statements verbally or on paper. That's slander and libel.
Wikipedia's Free Speech has an intersting introduction paragraph where they talk about where freedom of speech comes from and how it's implemented. To summarize, 'free speech' was a 'ideal' that was created long ago and adopted and modified by a variety of governments. Each governments laws are different on Free Speech but they're all based on the original ideal. Specifically, each society has different beliefs on what one can say when dealing with propaganda, hate speech, obscenity, and defamation laws.
The best metaphore I can think of is this... Free Speech is a lot like Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). You have the 'ideal' standard of what CSS should be, but none of the major web browsers support this idea, and instead only implement some or most of the standards. Each browser chooses to implement the standard independently of other browsers and therefor have inconsistent implementations of the standard. Some things work on some browsers, while others don't. So, even if you design a website following the CSS standard exactly, you might be disappointed to find that it might not work on everyone's browsers, and in some cases, even the smallest lack of support can cause huge problems in the rendering of your design.
While 'Free Speech' is an ideal, much like the CSS standard, it is not implemented the same in every country and some countries sorely lack support. (it would be fun to hear what people think what country is which browser, hehe) While it would be nice to just claim that you can say anything you want under free speech, that is just not true. You have to abide by the laws or your land or work to change them. When you go from your land to another land, you have to abide by their laws. You also have to make sure you freedom of speech does not violate someone else's freedom.
Now, regarding a Columbine game. I just read over a review from one of the Columbine students about the game. All I can say is simple, it appears freedom of speech is working just fine. After all, it's like you said...
Seriously, if you don't like it - don't view it
Which is exactly what the game festival did. The game festival (as an entity) decided they didn't want to view it any longer and stopped. It's not preventing anyone else from getting their hands on it and it's still available off their website, they just made a decision that it's not in their own best interest. It's not being censored because it's still available in the public domain. It's just no longer available through that private organization, which is the right of that organization.
Free speech comes with the requirement that people can self regulate what they choose to consume.
True, freedom of speech lets you say

Re:Not an excuse
About three weeks ago it was reported that a lot of the developers left Ritual and SiN Episodes is no more.
I never played all of the original SiN but I did play the demo back then and I liked it. I liked Shogo more though.
But... this raises a question. What if Episode 1 of SiN had never been released? The game would've been scrapped and the developers and publishers would not have been paid. Everyone loses. What we have now is that everyone still loses... we just lose less. -

Re:What the Hell is going on here...
try again, according to the NPD number 197,000 PS3's were sold at launch. Correct me if I am wrong but at its height I only saw about 1,000 PS3's up for sale on ebay. Leaving 196,000 in the wild. Let's say 2,000 parents have this sitting under their tree for little Billy, leaving 195,000 not including the Asian launch. That's not a million but with all the bleeding edge tech in the PS3 to say we've had as few problems as have been reported I think is impressive
http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/wii/ps3-wii-ebay-figu res-unveiled-218150.php
11.30.2006
In the weeks leading up to Black Friday (and the weekend itself), the PS3 shifted 28,233 units over eBay
So approximately 15% of all PS3's sold in November were resold on eBay in November...
When you include Craig's list and people who attempted to sell their system locally a safe assumption would be 20%-25% of PS3s were resold in November...
When you add people who bought them for Christmas the number of unopened systems would jump to 30%-40% ...
So (in general) there would be 100,000-115,000 PS3 systems that have seen more that a week or two of actual use; in Contrast the number of Wii systems seeing similar use would be somewhere between 400,000-500,000 units. To what extent do you think having less systems on the market would lead to their being less errors reported about a system? -

Re:Article snipit is missleading
It looks like a WiiMote, only because it looks like any other remote control, except with a trigger button. The Wii controller was specifically designed to look like a TV remote control.
If you look at the complaint, it doesn't specifically say what part of the patent is being infringed upon. But considering the patent is called "Trigger Operated Electronic Device", and the provided diagrams don't indicate any other outstanding technology (pointing mechanisms, accelerometers), you've gotta assume the trigger is what the complaint is about.
Look at the front of the remote in their patent diagrams. All it has there is an infra-red LED, just like any remote you have at home. And even though they call it a pointing device, there is no pointing mechanism. Under "Example 1" they say that in order to move the cursor, you use your thumb to press the digital buttons on the top of the remote. Just like a DVD player remote.
So, I'm no patent expert, but it seems clear to me that this complaint is B.S. -
Re:So I don't "exactly" control the sword?
The stab is actually not accomplished by stabbing with the remote. The stab is accomplished only by targeting with the Z-button, pushing forward with the analog stick, and slashing with the remote - the same slash used for the regular sword swing.

Horray for obvious studies...
Those who played the violent video game showed more activation in the amygdala, which is involved in emotional arousal, and less activation in the prefrontal portions of the brain associated with control, focus and concentration than the teens who played the nonviolent game.
Kotaku echoes my thoughts on this one...
So the teens playing the emotionally rousing combat game were emotionally aroused, and the teens playing the precision racing game were more focused? Amazing. I'm no scientist, but this study seems like it was set up specifically with the goal of finding something wrong with violent games in mind. -

Japanese SIMs Advert, via Kotaku. Alas poor TV, you have no chance.
Apologies if the link doesn't work. Also if it does, I guess. I wanted to test a YouTube link on Slashdot. -
Wrong on both counts
- Little kids don't prefer Nintendo. A recent survey has shown that younger kids prefer adult-themed consoles. They want to pretend to be grown-up, thus they prefer consoles they think are targeted at adults. Interestingly, the Wii is probably the most mature console, since it doesn't desperately try to look mature. It's also probably not aimed at children: It's aimed at parents buying gifts for their kids.
- You don't need to exercise while playing Wii. All games can be played by sitting on your couch, vegging out. But you gotta realize that some people actually prefer jumping around and having fun. Yeah, even adults.
-
Re:Wii Campers?
The negative press coverage has the added effect of making gamers in general look like psychotic raving lunatics subservient to evil Japanese overlords in the mind of somebody who doesn't care to tell the difference. Instead of it being about who had a successful launch vs. who had a poorly-coordinated launch, it's about those evil video game companies cleaning our children's bank accounts and driving them to violence in front of Best Buy. I'm glad the console business is doing well, but you'd think that with all the time and effort Sony put into this thing they would have put the system into production way before July to ensure people wouldn't have to step all over each other to get one.

Sony's first line of product ALWAYS SUCKS.
I disagree, most of their products 'suck' in general. There is always some minor flaw in them that they never catch in beta. But by releasing a limited supply of consoles on the first run, they can minimize damages when that error is fixed. o_o'
Sony won't know about it until it's too late, after all, the PS3 units were only bought to be resold. -

Excuse me, but teenage slash-dorks aside, can anyone really tell me they'd put a black chip on ol' Nolan's foresight here?
Reading the Wiki someone referred me to, it seems that he's had more success in food service software. Almost nothing I find here game-wise seems creatively challenging or notably popular. Name that Tune? Can I get a witness on this?
Speaking as a casual geek, Nolan comments do seem a little out of touch, as can be expected with mostly managing a pizza restaurant with Skee-Ball since selling a failing toy company.
His new restaurant wants to lure in gamers by making this obliquely "hip" cafe wall to wall terminals with what his comments allure to being 'simple' games. I can't remember the last time the promise of Tetris sold me a chicken sandwich. I'm pushing 30. Arcades are kiddy-bait, or haven't you been to a Dave and Busters, forgotten it was 'bring the sprouts Friday' and left immediately?
Finally, completely aside, uWink's website implies that you'll order food through a machine at your table. This concept has proven a nearly universal failure for a chain.
In other news Uwe Boll said that the Halo movie would probably fail. (True) Consider the weight of that opinion, (remembering that he's referring to box-office sales. ;) -

5. How dare you, Judge, promise a hearing today and then prevent that hearing from occurring. How dare you, Judge, petulantly order the production of the game after it is released on Tuesday morning. I didn't even ask for that. You did that out of spite, and you were smiling when you did that. You really enjoyed that one, didn't you, Judge?
Take-Two's lawyer, Rebecca Ward, lied in your courtroom when she told you that a "Teen" rating is an age restriction at the point of sale. That is an utter fabrication, and you are on notice that it is an utter fabrication. Ms. Ward is very good at fabricating things for a client that routinely engages in criminal conduct, and you bought all this hook, line, and sinker.
You were very nice to my other expert, Miami Police Chief Ken Harms, and then made it certain that your courtroom would not be graced with his real expertise. I would have preferred less courtesy and more due process, and so would the victims that are on the way.
You broke every promise made me. Disagree with me if you like, but don't refuse to hold a hearing you promised to have. Don't promise to view an entire game and then cut out after an hour.
Next time you promise a "hearing," I'll bring a parent with me whose kid is in the ground because of a kid who trained to kill him or her on a violent video game. Try mocking that person, I dare you.
Seriously, there is sooo much crap in there that I could end up quoting the whole thing! -
Thompson's response letter to the judge...
Pretty good reading, if you'd like to get a better sense at just how crazy JT really is:

Re:The Details For The LazyCome off it. Sony hasn't exactly screamed about its online service but there have been enough nuggets along the way to know there is one. It's been known for a long time that it has a browser, demos have show the Singstar online store, demos of the UI have show the friends and chat functionality. They mightn't have sun their plans from the rooftops but it was quite obvious they were going to do something. And it's obviously going to develop over time too.
Besides, it's not as if Nintendo have fully disclosed what they are doing either. We know there are "channels" with various network snippets and an optional browser but they haven't said much at all about how the network gameplay system works. Why no snide articles about that?
Zonk is just trolling as usual. The only PS3 articles you see on Slashdot are negative or spun with some bullshit synopsis. The only Wii articles you see are positive or hyped. Kotaku.com is a far better place for rounded games news, or 1up.com's excellent video and radio casts.

No wonder
From the kotaku post:
Each store had at least eight PS3's for preorder, with some getting as many as 16.
Wow. No wonder it's already sold out.
