Re:Open source and standards ftw!
You do realise vgchartz are a laughing stock who guesstimate numbers from a tiny sample size?
Try looking up public sources of numbers collated and published from NPD. You might learn that for 2007, worldwide, PS3 outsold Xbox360. Or that through Jan 08 in America, PS3 outsold Xbox360 (and almost caught up with the supply constrained Wii).
Xbox360 is currently in a bit of a rut, and Sony is gaining some momentum despite being way behind.
But while MS are happy to throw money around, does the perceived success or failure of Xbo360 really matter? They have their MS controled set-top box ready in living rooms around the world, which I imagine is all they really want. -
Tighten up your reasoning...
So, I give your article a readthrough, and I have to take issue with some parts of your analysis (I am sticking to the Xbox comparison, because that's where I have something of a clue):
You write: "The PS3 has sold better out of the gate than the PS2 did in its first year (PS2: 6m in 1 year; PS3 6m in ~5 months)."
- The PS3 didn't sell 6 million in 5 months - they shipped 6 million from factories in the first 5 months. Sony have now shifted to the more conservative "shipped to retailers" estimate. (The same that Nintendo and Microsoft have been using) That's why they report 5,59 million shipped worldwide in their latest financial report (through 2007/09/30).
(See: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=202533)
- The PS3 released at the same time in the US and Japan (november), and in Europe in march, and was not supply constrained for a significant amount of time. The PS2 had serious supply issues initially and launched as follows:
Japan: March 4 2000
US: October 26 2000
Europe: November 23
(See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2)
Hence, comparing "first year sales", with vastly different launch schedules in various territories does not give a terribly accurate picture.
-As for the PS3 having outsold the Xbox 360 "in every market outside the US", that is simply factually inaccurate. (It is certainly very wrong indeed in Europe's largest console market, the UK, as well as Canada. Spain has certainly gone Sony's way, Germany is still PC dominated, and France is pretty close according to what information one can get, although Sony will probably gain a lead pretty soon if it hasn't already.
Finally, looking at the actual numbers available from tracking agencies (MC / NPD) can be interesting for those who are geeky enough to actually care about these things:
Hardware LTD Japan: (MC)
WII - 4,060,486
PS3 - 1,467,083
360 - 482,568
Hardware LTD America: (NPD)
360: 7,862,151
WII: 6,019,685
PS3: 2,446,649 -
Re:Not surprising...
they're casual gamers, they're not out buying a new game every week.
I'm a game developer, and before that an administrator for a gaming website. I don't buy a new game every week. Studies I've read suggest that this "once a week" demographic only accounts for 3% of all gamers. It's happening. Look at the Japanese software charts, not just the hardware charts. Not a single Wii game in the top ten last week, this on supposedly the most popular console in Japan.
You're right, according to last week we should expect the 360 to win in Japan! ...Or we could look at this week, where in the top 30 there's 5 Wii games, 1 PS3 game, and 0 360 games (despite the Wii hardware dropping AGAIN). Now, 5/30 is low, but 0/30 and 1/30 are DISASTERS.the competition's got big games in the pipeline too (not to mention a price drop).
The Wii is also quite capable of dropping price. This is less of a big deal in Japan, mind you, and more of a big deal in North America where people continue to buy GBAs over DSs for being $30 cheaper. Not many hardcore gamers in any territory are going to want to own the system that their grandma and little sister thinks is cool. That probably sounds harsh, but that's the way 18-24 year old males think, and they make up the majority of hardcore gamers.
My experience with siblings is the opposite--younger sisters tend to take interest in whatever the older brother is playing. People get into arguments like "I want to play the NES" "No *I* want to play the NES".
As for the 18-24 male have-moved-out-of-the-house range, why would they care what their relatives are playing? If playing a game can get them into girl's pants, they'll do it, but otherwise they'll play whatever they like, or their dorm-mates like.Whether or not the Wii continues to outsell the PS3 and Xbox 360 (by whatever shrinking margin it can muster), the big problem for them is that games aren't selling, really at all.
In North America the Wii games are selling better than PS3 games, and worse than 360 games. More 360s have been sold than Wiis in North America, and more Wiis have been sold than PS3s in North America. It's almost like install base is important after all!
Now, yes, the 360 has a spectacular attach rate--the 360 probably having the most hardcore of the ownership bases, and having achievement points which seem to be an obsession for some people. For this reason, the Wii could pass the 360 in America and still not control the region. This doesn't mean that the clear #2 console will be ignored by developers, though (the original XBox wasn't ignored last-gen; only third place (GC) was). -
Re:Home Just Keeps Getting Better And Better
What the hell are you babbling about?
Sony RIGHT NOW has:
Free online for everyone who owns a PS3. No having to worry if your friends have kept up their stupid 50 dollar a year charge to play games online.
Their launch title PS3 set the gold standard for online console play
40 players per game
Dedicated servers
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140657
And now Warhawk is the new online leader
32 players per game
Dedicated servers
User dedicated servers
The most common thing heard in Home discussion is "who do I have to kill to get into the Home beta" When Home officially launches this year its game over for online console dominance.
Sony wins. Sorry if you spent hundreds of dollars over the past few years to Microsoft for crappy P2P games on the Xbox and 360.
Microsoft:
50 dollars every damn year just to be allowed to play games online
No dedicated servers
Crappy player counts - A pathetic 8 max for Gears of War, and a pitiful 16 max for Halo 3
No answer to Home

Re:Not surprising.
If the Wii has passed the 360 worldwide then the next, and possibly last, major milestone will be to beat the 360 on its home turf. Being #1 on a region by region basis as well as worldwide would be indisputable proof of the Wii's dominance.
No, actually the next milestone for the Wii will be to pass the 360 in Europe, Canada, and Australia (the 360 is still leading in all of those regions, but the lead is reasonably narrow ...unlike the US where the 360 nearly doubles the Wii still--source Neogaf). -

Amazing Game
The graphics are jaw dropping and the combat system is very deep and satisfying. I've played it at least ten times through since last night when I downloaded it learning more and more about the counter system and the different stances.

The next few months are going to be absolutely insane for the PS3 with Lair, then Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, Little Big Planet, Heavenly Sword just for the major first party titles. -
Re:No difference? The new PSP is 20% thinner, it's 30% lighter, the UMD hatch has been redesigned, it has a TV-out, it has more built-in memory for caching, it has a faster UMD, the battery life has been extended. The front-on form factor might look the same but plenty has changed.
As for games, it has plenty of excellent titles.
Stick with your DS if you like it, but get your facts straight.

Wii online is a disaster, and the 360 is a joke with no dedicated servers, low player counts(8 for Gears of War, 16 for Halo 3(and it looks like a last gen game)), laggy online play, 50 dollars every year to play. The PS3 has turned out to be the online gaming console of choice this gen:
* Free online play for all games.
* Dedicated servers
* Lag free games
* High player counts - Resistance 40, Warhawk 32
* Custom clan spaces in Home for before and after matches -
Re:Availability
Was way more than a million they had available. PS3 has been in common supply in Europe and in fact in several places the stores had to try to discount the consoles a fair bit underneath MSRP to move overstock.
Few articles for you on that
UK Retailers dropping the price below MSRP http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/05/uk-retailer-drop s-playstation-3-price-25/
82% sales drop http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/03/playstation-3-sa les-plunge-82-in-uk/
Also considered they sold 800k on the first day so that means took them 10 weeks more to sell 200k more so about 20k a week which while a little over twice as good as its selling in Japan is not very good (Japan for reference sold less than 9k PS3's last week according to MediaCreate http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16168 3> and they are way past the launch period). The issue comes down to the PS3 just is selling pretty awful and worst than the GameCube sold in the previous console generation. -

Microsoft Fails To Create A Resistance Killer
Two years into the life of the console when Halo 3 gets released and being the primary first party franchise the game should be the technological standard for the Xbox 360. Instead..
A pathetically small number of players per match at 16
No dedicated servers
P2P networking setup that leads to the usual laggy online play
Even diehard Halo players are making jokes about the game looking any better than Halo 2 on the Xbox
And to make things even worse, Microsoft is charging people 50 bucks every years just to play the game online. What a disaster. The only thing that will save Halo 3 is the hundreds of millions in payouts to media and reviewers to generate the usual bogus hype.
Sorry Bungie you failed to come up with a Resistance killer:
40 players per match
Dedicated servers for lagfree online play
Completely free to play for anyone with a PS3
This thread describes why Resistance is the gold standard in online console games now:

Re:Too Little, Too Late
Same here. Although the Wii is my roommates. We played the hell out of it back in January and he would make fun of me for spending so much on my PS3. But now...
Resistance has turned out to be the greatest online game I've ever played while he has been waiting for Nintendo to finally get their shit together with online games. Even then it will be that friend codes crap.
Motorstorm in first person view on a big screen TV with the volume cranked is probably the most intense and realistic gaming experience I've ever played. ExciteTruck...
Home looks absolutely insane and I can't wait to get into the open beta in a month or two. Hopefully. I've been following the leaks from people lucky enough to get in this past week:

And we have been renting BluRay movies. Funny how it only takes one 1080p movie viewing to turn you into a 1080p snob. Going back to sub-1080p movies is now painful.
I don't think he will sell his Wii but it really is gathering dust like so many other people say. There will probably be a few fun party games coming out this year for us to play. But I would hate to be sitting around all year long waiting for Mario and Metroid Prime. -

Resistance is the Gold Standard in console gaming.
If I was a pc developer trying to get out of the dying pc gaming market and move into the very competitive and lucrative console game world I would be terrified if I going up against Resistance too.
But then again, Valve are one of those pc developers who have public cried about their inability to handle modern multi-core chips like Cell. And cried about how all of their old directx code wasn't any use on the PS3.
Poor babies.
If you can't handle the competition Valve, stay out of the console market... -

I assume you meant to write Mii integration.
You are too focused just on games. Although what you say sounds correct, Home is not limited to just games, but potentially to essentially limitless number of things. Microsoft is charging 360 owners 50 dollars a year just for the privilege of playing games online. That is 200-250 dollars you are adding to the price of the console. Just to play Halo 3 online over the next few years you are having to pay 500-650 dollars to Microsoft for you 360. A complete ripoff considering:
No dedicated servers for 360 games
Pitiful number of players - 16 max for Halo 3 - WTF?

I have played the PS3 and I am not impressed. I wanted to like it... But after
trying it I am more likely to get an Xbox360 for my HD needs. Resistance Fall of Man
was a huge disappointment. Decent graphics, awful plot... I preferred Red Steel (Wii)
which is not even a great shooter. Heck I was playing Wii sports non-stop for a week.
So far I would have to say Wii has won first round hands down. Microsoft has a chance
to do well with the 360 if they keep the games coming, and Sony is in a world of hurt
unless they somehow get everyone and their mother to buy their $600 clunker. Even a
couple of really stellar games would have trouble selling the platform to me now.
I never wanted to get a Xbox but Sony really didn't give me much of a choice. -

PS3 has the top selling game in Japan now - Japan will be a fierce battle between Sony and Nintendo. Nintendo really needs to work on their release schedule. Wii owners are getting restless as the novelty of games like Wii Sports is wearing off.

Virtua Fighter just about to hit the shelves.
GDC sounds like Sony is going to have some pretty big announcements with even more PS3 exclusive games and other previews.
Europe is going nuts with PS3 fever with record pre-orders for the system. Not surprising with the absolutely insane list of launch games.
No wonder the PS3 is nowhere to be found online or in stores. What a fucking awesome time to be a Playstation owner. Then again, when has that ever not been the case. -
Sony Teaching Microsoft How To Do Onlight Right
Sony is teaching Microsoft how to do online right, but the real question is will Microsoft listen and learn?
Gamers demand to have these MINIMUM features for online play in a console:
1) No idiotic fees just for the privilege of playing - milking cash out players for online shouldn't be a way to hide the high cost of your console like Microsoft does with the 250 dollars they charge people to play over the life of the console on top of the 400 dollar base price. Dumb Microsoft. Dumb.
2) Dedicated servers. The absolute crap online play in games like Gears of War - massive lag problems, server disconnects, silly 8 player max - show just how important it is for a console company to have the infrastructure in place for developers to use. Someone needs to sit Microsoft down in front of Resistance to see how a modern online console game is done right. Seamless matchmaking, 40 players with absolutely no lag or frame rate drops. Linkage to an active online community with http://myresistance.net/
If you can't do those two basic things you have no business in the online console world. Microsoft needs to get their shit together fast. Sony has shown them the way. The early reports on Halo sound like it is another Gears of War type mess - no dedicated servers and only 16 players max. What a joke.
Wake up Microsoft. Throwing in gimmicks like achievements is no substitute for a modern and quality online service like Sony is providing.
Microsoft, read this thread and take notes:

Re:Gears of War sales?
Raw #s:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13769 3
Bottom line is that Gears of War was the best selling game of December, at 815,000 copies. It was #3 for the year with 1.8 million sales (following Madden 07 for the PS2 @ 2.8 million and New Super Mario Bros for the DS at 2 million).
It was #5 for all titles in December (the "All Titles" category lumps all versions of a single game together.. for instance, Madden 07 sales include sales on the PS2, PS3, 360, XBox, etc). -
Re:Wii/PS3 numbers
You are wrong on both numbers. You are simply repeating silly 'estimates' of ship numbers that were in a few news sites for the PS3. And the Wii didn't ship anywhere near 2 million units.
Here's a sanity check, http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12979 7
NPD sales data will be out for November in a few weeks regardless. -

Wii in JapanNice try bu Wii are better
;-)
Pictures and infos about Wii preorders in Japan:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12800 4
As this is being written, it's just after 9:00 am in Tokyo and over 100 people are lined up outside of the Tsutaya music/game/dvd store in the district of Shibuya. No, there's no celebrity DVD signing or AAA CD release - people lined up to preorder the Nintendo Wii after word leaked that preorders would begin this morning
Lines are common for major game and console releases in Japan, but not for preorders. "I've never seen anything like this," said our correspondent John Ricciardi, currently in line. -
Re:If true, there is one problemfrom the rumor mill:
Nintendo intended to bring Wii to shop shelves in the UK and US for £150 and $200, but became influenced by pressure from the larger retail chains, which raised concerns over margins and low so-called 'basket value' (ie, the amount of revenue generated from a customer's overall purchases at the till)

Hissssss...
MarioKart online got boring the minute people figured out snaking
So why don't you snake back? Otherwise, you're a scrub. If you're worried about disconnecting losers, snake only during one lap so that the race appears close.

Karting a sport ?
In Formula 1, you (usually) start by karting
Do they have motherfcuking snakers too?

Snakes in a Kart
Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherf**king snakers in this motherf**king game!

Amazing what you find lurking around the dark corners of roms. Shame you need a GS to do it on the real thing (pain to put all the codes in, I've done it and it works but eh) but still fun with an emu. -

5 5:This is a game that will appeal to FPS fans first, and Shadowrun fans second.
Apparently the goal was not to make a Shadowrun game, the goal was to make a shooter, and they (ab)used their Shadowrun IP for it. And although I'm not at all a FPS fan, this combination of guns and magic could turn out to be a very interesting, or at least original, shooter. From the same site:
I'm actually selling up my Shadowrun books since I'm playing less RPGs nowadays. If anyone is interested please email me. I'll cut you a special deal if you work for FASA (I'll even through in a receipt so you can expense it).
I think the special deal for FASA people is a good idea. They need to read what Shadowrun is actually about. -
360 is less successful than Xbox 1 in the US too.
The PS3 is expensive, but it's the only player in it's domain in Japan -- the Xbox 360 has, somehow, been less successful than the original Xbox over there.
Xbox 360 is less successful than Xbox 1 in the US too. These are the data released by the most reliable market research company, NPD.
