Damn, I was hoping for All Terrain BattleBots
From the rules: The goal of this competition is for the race vehicle to complete the course as fast as possible. Interfering with other race vehicles will not be allowed.
I think they just ruled out 90% of the best bot designers in the US. I mean, who wouldn't want to see Toro or Ronincharge up on some weinie scientist's bot and tear it to pieces?
Maybe this will spark a new arena for bot-combat.

Top 20 spammers in the country.Wired recently did a great article on the economics of spam and the business behind it. Spam is big business, and many oportunists have sprung up to take advantage of it. The magazine did a lot of research on just who is sending all this spam, and it turned out that a small number of very large "direct marketing service" companies were involved in a majority of it. They went on to compile a list called "the top 20 spammers in America." These 20 individuals are heads of companies that are responsible for a total of 67% of all direct-marketing e-mail generated in the United States.

Top 20 spammers in the country.Wired recently did a great article on the economics of spam and the business behind it. Spam is big business, and many oportunists have sprung up to take advantage of it. The magazine did a lot of research on just who is sending all this spam, and it turned out that a small number of very large "direct marketing service" companies were involved in a majority of it. They went on to compile a list called "the top 20 spammers in America." These 20 individuals are heads of companies that are responsible for a total of 67% of all direct-marketing e-mail generated in the United States.

More than that, they're nearly immune to aging. Back when I was a freshman art student ('93, 94?) I made a sculpture featuring an ordinary Twinky, in a lexan case I created that was supposed to reference Lenin's final resting place... it's even internally lit.
Before you ask, no, I didn't spray the Twinky with anything. Straight out of the package. The case is not air-tight, but it's close.
Of course, it was in a couple of student shows while I was at school, but I figured when it started lookiing nasty, I'd pop in a new one. That was almost 10 years ago, and it still looks great, as you can see (I took those photos about 5 minutes ago). Notice the dust on top of the case? I do dust it every 6 months or so...

Yes, but there are success stories of bands who've managed to do this without being "discovered". There's one band in particular that comes to mind. They deliberately ignored self-promotion, and marketing in every sense. The only thing they cared about in thier early years was the music, and they excluded just about everything else. The result was them spending several years being totally broke, and playing shitty dives. But, they were so true to thier vision of making music...that they just didn't care and kept playing.
Somewhere along the way, they began to get really really good. Thier fan base grew from nothing, and soley by word of mouth began to have a huge following. They have subsequently released 10 albums, and are respected by some of the best musicians of our generation.
Now, this story could be about almost any successful band right? Except all of this occured completely outside the radar of MTV(and it's fascimilies) and radio. Yes, it happened right here in the US during the late 80s and early 90s.
The band is Phish btw, and as you can see from the photo they are hardly a cutesy boy band, lol. -

Thanks for posting the link, I had heard about this product but couldn't recall the name.
After reading over the features, though, I should note that the mail is accepted whether it is spam or not. It just doesn't get delivered to your inbox if it is not "confirmed." To the end user, such as my father or sister, this is great -- they don't get spammed.
However, as a system administrator and bandwidth hoarder, I would hesitate to install TMDA, and only TMDA on a mail server. The problem is that the spammers' mail systems will believe the message was successfully delivered (250 OK - message accepted for delivery, etc at the end of SMTP session). This has two downsides: 1) The spammer knows your address is valid, and 2) Repeated delivery of spams wastes (precious/expensive) bandwidth.
Now, let's consider the outgoing messages... remember that confirmations are sent out to the sender (by the way, is this the header's From: address or the Return-path: address?). As most from addresses are forged, or quickly fill with flames, etc, your messages will simply bounce. And if your mail system (or perhaps TMDA) isn't smart enough, it will repeatedly try to deliver the confirmation request. Again, a waste of bandwidth, and possibly a waste of storage space.
I'm very interested in TMDA, and I will definitely try it out. However, I also believe that some sane Sendmail rules and use of various DNS blacklists will stop the majority of spam. In fact, I don't recall the last time I got spam at my personal account. My email address is easily spiderable on my website...
My Sendmail rules will bounce messages during the SMTP transaction... not after. This way a bounce message is returned immediately to the sender. If spammers are listening to my mail server, they will remove my address from their list, believing it is invalid.
The goal in fighting spam should be to reduce the list of "valid" email addresses. If we accept spam but simply delete it (eg, using client-side MUA filtering or TMDA) then that is just another "miss" on the spammer's mailing list. But if their list starts shrinking due to "invalid" addresses then it will be less and less economical to send out so much spam.
Think about it for a moment. If a spammer sends out a million emails, and 10% are filtered on the client side, that's still 900,000 addresses from which they may get a "hit." Let's say the spammers expect
Those of you in California may choose to add a "this server located in California" to your SMTP greeting message. It should help if you decide to prosecute a spammer for UCE. SBC/PacBell has some good information on California spam laws.
Obviously, a better solution would be a combination of the two... TMDA and some good Sendmail rules (or whatever MTA you like). But I would hope that TMDA could deliver fake bounce messages to those who do not confirm their messages. -

Somethig most forgetI'm reading the previous comments and there's something I notice that's disturbing. Most are quick to say how they hate spam and how spam will kill the Internet. Many are even providing information on how to filter spam. But no one has said anything about reporting spam. If there is something going on that you're so adamantly against, why don't you LART it? Doing your own personal filtering or simply ignoring the spam (UCE or UBE) only benefits yourself and only in the short term I might add. If you take a little time to LART messages, you'll not only help get A) spammers booted from their provider, b) spam sites get shut down, and c) companies that use a spammer's services to find a better way to advertise, you'll assistant in decreasing your's and everyone else's future spam. Examine the headers. Learn the signs of an open relay. Check for and report open relays. LART the abuse and postmaster addresses of the owner of the IP, the provider for that netblock, the owners (and sometimes providers) of the spamertised sites in the spam, CC uce@ftc.gov, and CC NANAS (news.admin.net-abuse.sightings) so that there is a record of spam for others to confirm that they aren't the only ones getting a particular spam. Also include the FDA on spams that say things about prescription drugs without and prescription or other FDA-related topics. Also include the US Secret Service on Nigerian Money scams. The SEC also accept reports of stock market scams. There is a plethora of things you should do with the spam you receive. Doing nothing with it is the real crime. I strongly recommend you become a member of news.admin.net-abuse.email and follow the discussions there. There are many spam FAQs floating around. Do you part to help other fight spam.
I filter spam based off of numerous DNS blacklists. I also have an extensive list of spamming domains and spam supporting providers that I blacklist. Last week I rejected 95,837 pieces of mail from just one of my servers that I deemed to be spam. If people didn't report that spam to the maintainers of the DNS blacklists, I would have to rely on my own access lists to reject spam. This colaborative effort really works.

TCL C Library
The Tcl C library has rock-solid support for serial and network I/O for both Unix and Windows. You language buffs may recall that John Ousterhout first created the Tool Command Language (TCL) as a C library supporting electronic CAD applications. You can check out the interface for I/O channels in the online man pages.
Tcl's thread support is a little more limited. There is a thread extension which is supposed to be pretty good. (I haven't personally used it.) But unless your application is running on multiprocessors, you probably don't need threads and should consider an event-based model. (see "Why Threads Are A Bad Idea" PowerPoint only, sorry.) Events are just plain easier to program and support than threads. And Tcl's event support is excellent.
As a side benefit, you'd get a free scripting environment to prototype your application's communications subsystem. -
Systems Administration Survival GuideHere's how I became a UNIX systems administrator:
I first spent 2 years as a student worker in the MIS department of a community college I was attending. I assisted the computer operator running the mainframe by doing backups, answering phones, etc. He got promoted and I got his job. I held that job for 5 years and took an entry level job as a UNIX Systems Administrator. I got paid peanuts for two years until I read a SAGE salary survey that pointed out this fact. After gently hinting about other job opportunities in the real world I got a HUGE raise (to where I should have been) and stayed another three years. After that I moved on to several dot coms that soon failed. Now I'm unemployed (via a layoff) in a bear job market. All this without a college degree (1/2 way to a B.S. in Physics) or any certifications (MSCE, Solaris Certified Administrator, CNE, etc.).
People who go into Systems Administration (especially UNIX) are of a certain breed. While most everyone else runs away from technology, we eat it for breakfast. Rather than get political we have a tendancy to want to jump in, get our hands dirty and solve the problem now. Unfortunately, companies have learned to unfairly take advantage of this and set up traps that we all too often walk into.
As for myself, all along the way I constantly shot myself in the foot because I fell into the trap of thinking logically about business. Realise this: ALL BUSINESS IS FUNDAMENTALLY EVIL. Not evil by intent. Just so self-serving such that it's actions have far reaching bad consequences for us all. Unless we move to a desert island and learn to be content with the life we can find there, we have to fit in and serve the beast somehow, eh?
So, the best thing you or anyone can do for themselves is to know what you're walking into! Have some standards and force yourself to check the company out periodically. If they aren't up to snuff you need to quietly stay in your job while desperately looking for a better company.
How will you know you've found a better company? To answer this question I sat down with a former Systems Administrator co-worker (also out of work) and came up with a questionnaire. Each question comes from a situation where we took the fall where the company was at fault due to their own cluelessness as to how to properly implement IT. You assign a point value to each question thus declaring the relative importance of each issue to you personally. Then you honestly respond to each question in a comment field. From the response you assign a percent score showing how well the company "got it".
All this is automatically tallied (since the questionnaire is in spreadsheet form) into a percentage score that you can use to compare the prospective company against all of the companies you've worked for. I even put the questions that were likely to be answered before you start working for the company in bold. This way you can get a "heads up" on the company before you leave your old job. In fact, on my questionnaire by how I weighted the questions, about 50% of the "dirt" on a company can be found before even accepting the job offer! If I only had this before I started working for any of the companies I've worked for!

The CEO signed a contract with a $3.4M bonus to guide Rhythm's through Bankruptcy. They called it a 'retention bonus' where he is paid $100K per month, to suffer the 'indignity' of working for a bankrupt company- I guess.

34 Line Web Server
Check out the 34 line web server written by Rick Klement, the best Perl programmer I've ever known, who says of it:
I wrote this after seeing a small HTTP server that took ~650 lines of C. I thought it would be an interesting challenge to try for a ten-to-one reduction. Not only did I exceed that, but the ~650 line server did not do POST type CGI's, which mine will.
This server (which I name 'ws') has been quite useful. I use it for CGI testing, it's much simpler launching 'ws' with all parameters given on the command line than modifying an Apache conf file and firing the new Apache server up.
'ws' takes four arguments on the command line,
ws port_number doc_tree_base cgi_tree_base cgi_location
but they all have defaults. I usually fire it up with
ws 80 .
and then fetch plain docs from machine/somedoc.html and CGI's from machine/cgi-bin/somecgi.pl -

Bastille Linux vs. OpenBSD
I don't subscribe to the notion that these are in opposition to one another. That OpenBSD is not always the answer is very true. But all good things have their purposes. In fact, I use them both in my segmented, handy-man-special, home network:
OpenBSD for Mac68K (all these were bought for a pittance on eBay):
2 Quadra 700s: transparent firewall (ipf) and 3-legged NAT (ipnat)
Quadra 610: mail server (qmail)
Centris 610 (w/68040): dns server (djbdns)LinuxPPC: (Bastille'd by using the Sparc trick on the FAQ)
2 7300s: apache and MySQL (soon to be PostgreSQL?)
9500/G3: mol / streaming with videod, icecast (Better choices are welcome.)
Pismo PowerBook: dual bootI haven't had as many years using Linux (only 2) as you have. And aside from that my computer experience amounts to a few mid-'80s semesters of VAXen and the entire life of the Mac platform -- and around 4 months of NetBSD and OpenBSD. But I have to say it (adding BSD to the mix) hasn't been that hard at all. There are many similarities with Linux. Much of your current knowledge will transfer. For anyone who has learned guitar and then tried bass, or ukulele, you've experienced this before.

dude, I live a half-block from the Pacbell station where my dsl terminates. I have the enhanced package. Here is their WEB SITE granted they aren't offering 6Mbps up anymore, they used to, and haven't cancelled our enhanced SDSL service yet. we still even have STATIC IP ADDRESSES, which PACBELL is also no longer offering. But never-the-less, and this is important, my account number with them is a PHONE NUMBER. one that you can call to and from. and the POTS access works fine with the DSL operating FULL BORE. so enough with your expertise, why don't you look up the details instead of resting your OPINION on your slight knowledge and your "last I heard"'s.

Another cameo appearance of Linux in a mainstream mag comes to us from
Amos Shapira. He sent in an article at inforworld about NT 5.0's hefty system requirements, and how Linux will
"beat the living daylights out of it" on a system with less than 64 megs of RAM. Flattery
like that is just the kinda publicity we like to hear.
Slashdot has always posted little stories glorifying Linux, because THAT'S WHAT ROB LIKES!!! In the old days, if it mentioned Linux, then the story RAN and we (ACs) liked it that way. With stories like these, Rob is being truer to his roots than a thousand napster/cuecat stories could ever be.
It's his damn site, and you're being ungrateful. -
