Re:Wonder who shot first?
According to Penny Arcade, Sony accelerated their price drop plans leaving Microsoft with no choice but to follow suit. This is a real kick to the groin for Microsoft, whose consoles haven't been doing as well as they thought and cost more to produce. Sony's probably recouped their initial losses, but I doubt Microsoft has.
Yay Sony, I guess. -
Re:Differences
Here's my response. It says everything I want to say, eloquently.
-
Re:MicroSofts downfall
My hands are actually larger than average, and I still much prefer the PS2/PSX controller - I even got myself a converter similar to the one I mentioned for my PC, because I found most PC gamepads either too big and clunky (Logitech, MS) or too flimsy (cheaper brands).
And I'm afraid that contrary to you all reports I've heard from people using the XBox controller in any scenario have been very negative - a couple even to the point that they won't buy the console just because they dislike the controllers so much.
Maybe it's only because I'm European, but it seems like some Americans agree. -
If you've ever played a _Resident Evil_ game...
... you need to read fridays Penny Arcade. Its about time someone started thinking of the "prior to zombie infestation time" on resident evil games (or any kind of game that requires odd keys and combinations to move around). Think about it. The lab in which the infestation starts happens to be the one in the deepest part of the installation that requires finding keys scattered all over the base, and, if you worked in that lab, you'd have to leave for work 2 hours early to get all the keys to get in. Honestly, what kind of scientist would put up with such an overly secure work environment? What if something goes wrong? Get out? Hardly!!
Well, I guess that would explain why the infestation started in that lab. No one had enough time to get out, nor had enough time to get in there to destroy it before it got out of control. I'd think that if I had a lab that ran overly exotic and extremely dangerous experiments under the radar of the local government, I'd use a little more planning.... -
yes, but..

I see that sort of attitude a lot in CTF Q3 online, which is why this made me chuckle so much

Insightful Analysis
There is an insightful analysis of the legal decision at penny arcade, written by one "Atticus XI - Lawyer of Doom." Many lucid points raised on the side of those who are good and just.

How coincidental.
Interesting that this would be posted no less than three days after Penny Arcade's screenshot rant from Wednesday.
I have to say that I agree with Tycho and Gabe on this one. All too often I'm seeing websites post crappy images claiming that they show intricate detail of upcoming software, yet they compress it to the point that it looks like it came out of one of these. -
Re:xbox failure = microsoft gaming dead
I respect Shigeru Miyamoto a lot. However he is developing the games for a certain demographic.
Yeah. That demographic is called "people." The demographic you seem to belong to is a subset "people" called "people who are too insecure to try a game that might make them look less manly."
Once again, I will pull out the Penny Arcade link that summarizes this so well.

Throw money up in air, let rain down on head
Penny Arcade reveals eternal thruths.
Way to go, Herb. If I could sell out for the kinda cash you must be raking in (suggestions - build giant bin, go swimming) I'd do it in a second. 99% of the personal criticsm is (already apparent) personal jealousy. This isn't a sinister plot to somehow subvert ANSI C++ to MS' evil ends. It's a good career move on his part.
from MS web site:
"Herb's involvement in the C++ community will allow Microsoft to better work with developers building great applications in C++ and ultimately help drive the direction of our Visual C++ .NET tool," said Eric Rudder, senior vice president of the Developer and Platform Evangelism Division at Microsoft.
i.e. he's a PR figurehead. MS seems to think people will care. Jokes on them. This is too bad, b/c some people are going to be forced to work on C++@.NET, and Herb writes good; if they put him in documentation I'd actually be pleased. -

Re:Uh, what about the...
No FF, no MGS, not to mention their games tend to be kiddie games.
This is BS. Nintendo just doesn't make games with a lot of blood.
Mario 64 was an incredible game with wide appeal. Mario Kart 64 was an incredible game with wide appeal. Zelda: Ocarina of Time was an incredible game with wide appeal. Seeing a pattern? Smash Brothers, Majora's Mask, Star Fox, and dozens of great farmed out titles like Mario Tennis/Mario Party ... Not to mention 2nd party Rare titles like Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Jet Force Gemini...
Some people have just been programmed by (a long time ago) Sega and (now) Sony/MS that they're 'too cool for Nintendo.' I see it *all* the time when I'm in game shops and some foolish 16-year-old tells me that the Xbox has all the cool games like (and I quote): "Halo and Shrek" Shrek?
If you use your choice of video game console to somehow make you feel more 'mature,' take a look at this and think. (everyone else should, too. It's a good laugh.)
As far as Mature games for the 'Cube -- RE1 is coming out on April 30, and Eternal Darkness in June, then RE0 in September/October, as well as Metroid later this year. Rockstar also refuses to deny the possibility of a port of GTA3 to the 'Cube.
And while you're waiting for those, check out Pikmin if your masculinity can handle it, and Smash Brothers: Melee if you have friends that'll play it with you. Super Monkey Ball has been a huge hit for a multiplayer party game at my place. And there are plenty of other ports of this year's sports games if that's what you're into. NBA Street has been occupying a lot of my time recently, and a little Extreme G 3.

YeahMicrosoft has tenacity, Sony has market share. Sony also has tenacity, a better games library and hugely more market share in the console market, so MS has its work cut out for it.
Microsoft also has a controller that sucks. I like it, but I have large hands. Not everyone does.I purchased two SNES systems and two N64 systems. One game each. The SNES and Street Fighter II was for my nephew to play at home and at my house, and the N64 was for my niece to play Diddy Kong racing here and at home. Oddly enough, they never wanted more games for them, which I thought was odd.
If I ever have a kid of my own, Nintendo will be the console to buy.

Re:Goes a bit far...
There's a really good penny arcade that addresses what your talking about
As for the kid its really tragic. I'm sure Everquest will be painted in a horrible light after this, or not. Though much like the kid who killed himself because his D&D character got cursed, the kid probably had other problems. -
Re:Crooked Crooked Crooked
I gotta agree... games that don't deserve awards get them and games that do don't. its like movies, the more hyped up it is the more it will suck... look at last action hero... if you can. games nowadays are either rehashes or so completly original that they are pathetic. Namley BloodRayne... Penny-arcade has some funny things to say about the subject here. quite funny.
CCNA class was never this fun! -

This is a repost of my reply to some other guy in this thread, it applies equally well here.
From here:
"The Bnetd issue is the hot topic of discussion again in our forum. I've already said right here exactly how I feel about it so I don't see any reason to go into that again. However I would like to mention something about the EFF. In there press release they offer a link to our cartoon on the subject. I mailed Tim Jung and let him know that without our new posts on the topic the comic strip was out of context. He was very cool about it and removed the link right away. He sent me a couple e-mails asking why I don't agree with them but he wasn't really a dick about it. I felt like the problem had been resolved. Then I got a mail from Will Doherty. I'll just post it here so you can see it:

This guy actually put the link BACK in the press release! It had already been taken out, the whole situation was cool and then this guy goes and fucks it all up again. I am seriously done thinking about the Bnetd issue but this got me pissed off again. Not at Bnetd but at people like this idiot who think that just because it's legal to do something that means its okay. What the hell ever happened to common fucking courtesy? I told him if he liked linking so much he should link to our rants on the subject but of course he didn't want to do that. He wants it to look like we agree with the EFF which we clearly do not. Needless to say we resolved the issue in our own special way but it still bothers me. I am not exactly sure who's rights they are "protecting in the digital age". It certainly wasn't mine and it sure as hell aint Blizzards."

Oh yeah, the EFF is a GREAT place! Really, whose rights ARE they protecting? -

Shh. Don't disturb game developers.
They're still trying to make sense of Lorne Lanning. Er, wait, maybe it was this Lorne Lanning.
After all, he spearheaded some kick ass 2D shooters, surely the FIRST 3D-engine-based game they worked on would run smooth as butter. It couldn't be the lack of experience and monstrous ego causing the trouble. Of course not. -

Good Job /.

Microsoft is evil, or MPAA/RIAA is evil, or power to Linux!
There's a lot more to being a nerd than spending a Friday night recompiling your Linux Kernel. The guys at Penny Arcade said it best when they said, "You play video games? Welcome to Dorksville." I for one don't know how many days and nights I spent at the local arcade, wasting my hard earned grocery sacker salary on that game. I don't think I'm the only slashdotter out there that was flooded by memories when I saw this article. I hate when people flame just because they have no interest in the article. That's what makes Slashdot great, there's a little something out there for all of us nerds to enjoy.

I write my own homepage. it has links to here, tom's, my ftp, my web site, my free spam collector, comics, and satire. I realized i didn't want to connect to the internet everytime i want to open up mozilla. so i wrote myself some html, and now my homepage is fast and i can go the places I need to in one link. I'm thinking of adding some weather and some news...

Re:Bah....
At least they're not peddling their readership to businesses by offering poorly-animated, humor-lacking Flash animations. Gabe has always done art for things other than Penny Arcade. His art is a regular staple over on the Gamespy Network. At the very least, Gabe's art is good enough that he doesn't have to whore himself out to get work.

Shouldn't User Friendly be apologizing to you for subjecting you to bad art and no humor? The Penny Arcade guys were right. "People will pass up steak once a week for crap every day."
