Re:Pretty much never?
eMule still works. I am finding more and more garbage these days when I use its search feature for video and programs, but for music, it works pretty well.
There are also sites like TV Underground and ShareReactor that provide good ed2k links.

Re:Decentralize
Razorback2 was one of the most populated servers, which allowed you to get better and faster search results - so I've heard
;-)
The users will just migrate to other servers, but this will be an incovenience for users and a major hassle for the server owners that will likely last years, whether or not they eventually get charged with anything. The Sharereactor case still hasn't concluded, although I've never heard that he was ever charged with anything. -
Re:posting of Magnet links illegal?
Well, here's one place that just posted e2dk (which are just a filename to save to, a hash and the filesize) links and got shut down:

Re:P2P is in its infancy
I mean, just look at P2P (or filesharing) today. When grabbing something off of Kazaa, music you're downloading could be pr0n, or a different song, or a 30 second sample that the RIAA put on to prevent the real one from being grabbed.
Sure, so you need someone to vouch for a file and some way of identifying that a file is the one vouched for.
At the moment that means something like Sharereactor.
Even assuming that sites like Sharereactor can't cope with traffic levels or fall to legal problems in the long term, a replacement peer to peer trusted reviewer system should be perfectly viable using encryption to guarantee the validity of a particular vouch for a link. Good reviewers, identified by their public key, build their reputation by word of mouth (or text of keyboard) just like the p2p networks themselves, or for that matter commercial sites, need to.
I don't think assuring quality will be as hard as you think it will. -
Re:shhhh!!
dont anyone mention BitTorrent and suprnova.org. for fellow slashdotters sure, but keep your mouth shut. Don't want this to go the way of napster.
This release is now available on the eDonkey network! See also www.sharereactor.com! :-D

Re:Going Gold
I then spent a couple of evenings on the net trying to find it. I had several files called GTA3.zip, and contained within them was a hockey game, an offroad game, and.. well I didn't recognize the name of it.
Godsdammit man, my mother can operate P2P software better than you can!
Here, let me help you learn the error of your ways (choose a pair):
eMule and ShareReactor or BitTorrent and SuprNova. -
Re:Tolkien would have liked the movies
While we are waiting for clarification, let me just say that both these aspects are tightly interwoven in my opinion. The room for interpretation of such stories comes from the fact that everyone may change them. And we are not worried about a poor storyteller mangling the tale precisely because the next week someone will tell us a better version.
Tolkien's (Jackson's) works now are fake oral tradition, because in fact they are corporate-sanctioned myths. Even if we look at LOTR, then close our eyes and dream about it being the last iteration of the Red Book of Westmarch, we must realise that this oral tradition was killed in the 20th century by greedy bastards, Tolkien estate and New Line Cinema.
BTW, I personally did feel the same way towards the movies. I thought they should be open for further interpretation. Check out this link for Purist Edit, the next iteration, a fork in the source tree. :) It's the theatrical version of TTT modified to better agree with the book. Jackson himself made an Extended DVD, which had new scenes, but the best thing about Purist Edit is that it had some bad scenes and episodes removed, or rather carefully reedited, sometimes to have precisely opposite meaning to Jackson's concept (making it closer to the book). -
The Two Towers - Purist EditThe Two Towers: The Purist Edit is a re-edit of the theatrical version that deals with most of the changes that people disliked to make a film that follows the book plot more closely. This new version is available on the eDonkey2000 network.
The purpose of the edit is to make the movie follow more closely to the original books. "It's amazing the work the editor has done by selectively removing scenes and rearranging them - without messing up the sound synchronisation. Now there are no longer any elves in Helm's Deep, Faramir is a good guy again, and the ents aren't idiots anymore." (tangent3)
Major changes (out of about 30 changes totally):
Ents don't refuse to attack Isengard
Elves do not come to Helm's Deep
Gimli is no longer a dwarf clown
Faramir does not decide to take the Ring to Gondor as a "mighty gift"
Frodo does not attempt to give the Ring to Nazgul
Arwen stays in Middle-Earth
Aragorn doesn't fall from a cliff

I've been using product activation for a few years already, and it's quite convenient, actually...

Re:maybe im missing something...
First, noone can say fast forward is the only natural method for skipping. This is just an artefact of analog playback devices, like VCR. When I play music in Winamp (currently on Flashback radio station from GTA3) or a movie in Sasami2k (or any other player), I don't use fast forward, because it is not available in most computer programs. What I do is forward 5 seconds, or 30 seconds, or 1 minute (or back).
It's only natural that on a digital PVR that stores the program on a HDD we would have fast forward replaced with forward 30 seconds (or 5 sec, or 1 min, or 1 frame). If I ever get a PVR, such function would have extremely substantial non-infriging use for me, because that would be what I would use to move around the recording.
Second, there are already examples where people were allowed to edit copyrighted works without explicit permission. One example is censoring movies for certain markets by cutting questionable scenes (shameless plug: check out LOTR: Two Towers: Purist Edit). Even though a derivative work is created, the courts ruled that it was allowed. Same argument can be made here.
Still, I can see why this is an issue. I just hope that PVR win and broadcasters lose because there are already too much commercials and advertisement is evil anyway. -
Re:My experiance with d/l'ing music...The simple fact is that the P2P networks are so full of garbage as to make hem not worth the effort.
Wrong.
You just don't know how to use p2p effectively. What most people learn to do is combine p2p with a trustable source (of file "fingerprints"). You've never really been able to trust random search results. e.g. Searching for "paris hilton sex tape" turns up a LOT of renamed fakes, unless you know who to trust for verified file hashes.
Now, eventually trust networks will be built into the p2p protocols, but until then there are central and not-so-central websites that serve as very trustworthy indexes of p2p content.
A few of the more popular ones:
- BitTorrent: NovaSearch, torrentlinks
- eDonkey: ShareReactor, FileNexus
- Kazaa: FastTrackmovies -CLOSED - never really used kazaa much myself.
- Gnutella: Bitzi

Re:Oh Well, there not the first, there not the lasPersonally, I use Shareaza.
It has some interesting features like MD5 & Tiger Tree hash verification and user comment system. It connects to EDonkey as well as Gnutella 1 & 2 and also works as a Bit Torrent client.
I've been using it for about 6 months now and have only once recieved a file that was something other than what it was named (that was my fault for not reading the comments attached to the file by other users). One of the features I really like is that it works with the links provided by ED2KLinks.com and ShareReactor.com.
It is a resource hog, but if you've got a extra box you can run it on, it's worth it. I regularly see my total DL bandwidth rise above 1.5 Mb/s.
Sorry, no linux client though.

Re:MAME is great but....Ever heard of eMule?
Site is VERY slow, but obviously as soon as you get the links in your client, you'll enjoy P2P and stuff.
Alternatively, you can download from Suprnova with BitTorrent.
So there you have it! Have fun buying memory cards if you want to bring all those games with you at once.

Re:Hmm...The famous sharereactor site , a site dedicated to ED2K-links for use with peer-to-peer programs such as mlDonkey, is to be closed.
Quoting the ambitioned but hardly competent Simon Moon from SR:
"Unfortunately, as all of you know, my limited PHP and MySQL knowledge caused the site as well as the forums to be barely usable for a long time. My investments of more than 4000 EURO bit not improve anything as I have been ripped of by a Cambodian hosting service. The money came from donations from the Sharereactor-community, so it is not really that bad for me."
I have always liked SR, so I thought I would share this news with you. -
Purist EditThey would definitely not do it, Jackson's ego would not endure that. But despair not, there is still hope.

Re:Not recording commercials
If you use P2P software like eMule and a service like ShareReactor, you can download all your favorite TV series (well, actually, all of THEIR favorite series, but geeks tend to like a certain subset of TV shows) with no commercials and all ready for watching on your computer or burning to VCD for convenient watching on your DVD player.
This is especially appealing for those of us in Canada who can download legally and don't have TiVo available.

Re:Time for us to run our own search engine
There is one. Share Reactor but, it only searches freenet, and supports Edonky/mule

Re:Broadband
That's a recurring theme when discussing so-called "broadband". There's no "killer app".
Huh? Hello, free movies?
People talk about multimedia applications (video on demand), but that would require real broadband (multimegabit).
Okay, you have to leave it downloading overnight, it isn't perfect yet. I still say it's a killer app. -
Re:Now what?
But how do you get illegal MD5 check sums with out possesing the files?
Not a problem. When you do a search on the file sharing network, the responses tell you what the hash is. This is used for 1) error checking, and 2) so that you can download from multiple sources (that have the same hash) simultaneously, secure in the knowledge that all the pieces will fit back together into a single file that replicates the original Or just go somewhere that has a library of hashes, like Bitzi or Sharereactor and collect hashes there. -
Check This List
SR Book List. Many of the books in this list are what you are looking for, and you can easily try them out before purchasing them.
-
Re:Book sales down too...
Nevermind the fact that it would be foolish to either transcribe an entire novel or scan all the pages with a 100% accurate OCR program then slap all the pages together in a PDF.
Foolish? Maybe. But are books available on P2P? I believe so!
Of course, it's the norm to post wrong information on slashdot. You're not the only one. -
Re:All your fancy freedom rhetoric aside
Not only Sharereactor, but Filenexus too and a few other smaller ones, also for the Edonkey network.
I used to think they survived just because EDonkey had a lower profile compared to the big names like Kazaa, but EDonkey seems to be pretty widely known these days and the indexing sites are still going fine. -
Re:So?
My question is why torrent.cx was shut down while sites like Share Reactor are running strong? I didn't view the former before it was shut down, but as I understand it is was a bunch of links you could click on to feed file information to the BitTorrent client, just as Share Reactor is a bunch of links you can click on to feed file information to the eDonkey network client. Is there a significant difference, or is it a matter of the RIAA not knowing about other sites or picking and choosing their legal battles?

Re:fp
First, you have to obtain a copy of GAY NIGGERS FROM OUTER SPACE THE MOVIE and watch it.
This movie can be obtained via ShareReactor.
I've seen it, and it's total crap. I only laughed at the first joke.
Here it is: "The Gay Niggers come from the planet Anus." I can't explain it; there's something about this line that's just funny.
(I voted 2/10 on the movie on IMDb.)
Props for an excellent troll, btw. -

I can see it clearly now.
Bush just confused ass and mass (and look at him it's the same thing)
But even if it doesn't justify a war, it is still illegal to download weapons of ass destruction. -
Re:Anecdotal Evidence - not so good
No, that's not the only practical way. In fact, with the eDonkey network you can link from web sites "into" the p2p net using ed2k://|name|size|MD4 hash| links. If you click on it your already running eMule/mldonkey/whatever will pick up the info and start downloading if you've setup the whole thing properly.
The artists could easily set up a web page and link to their work this way.
Have you ever seen this site or this? I have never searched the eDonkey network using an eDonkey client, those "meta" pages are the way now. -
Re:Ooooh, I could get a real BBC feed in America!
I guess the UK needs to work on cultivating its culture of piracy. Maybe you should work with the folks that run Sharereactor, they keep pretty up to date on quite a few TV series. They even have Japanese stuff.

Re:copy protection doesn't work
Where is the pre-crimes enforcement division when you need them?
Uh, somewhere here I think ;-) -
Re:Oh yeah?
-
What about other kinds of editing?
I wonder if something like Purist Edit of TTT would eventually be made legal. After all, there can be no legal objective definition of "filth" - it's also in the eye of the beholder. And if the court would say "A" in this case, they have to say "B" next...

safe way to grab files
use emule to download files in a distributed fashion. It is almost impossible to get a malicious file this way. Especialy if you hang out on web sites that post hashes of known good files. Emule also supports lists to block networks run by people that attack P2P file sharing clients.
If you have a virus scanner and software firewall, it is smooth sailing. Just throw in a cheap CD burner to save your downloads! -
Edonkey hast the whole DVD too...
For those of you who love the donkey as much as I do, here are the links to the share-reactor's Animatrix-DVD releases:
Get the wohle DVD here (Xvid) or here (SVCD)!
And for not letting the weak Sharereactor-Servers get /.ed, here is the direct link to the Xvid-File:
Animatrix_(2003).DVL.ShareReactor.avi
But for some strange reason, you have to apply a fix mentioned on the SR-page, after your download has been finished.
I love to see "The final flight of the Osiris" again without having to pay for Dreamcatcher ... :) -

Re:FreeNet
Well, when they implement searching or a decent indexing service (like ShareReactor for eDonkey), then I'll switch over. Until then, it's fairly useless.

Traffic. Traffic. Traffic. The filesharing systems are used in order to distribute large legit files. When I need to give a N-megabyte file to one person, I can set up an FTP server on my computer. When I need to give this file to several people, I can upload it to my web-page. But if I need to give this file to many people or if the file is at least 100Mb, then my personal Internet connection is not sufficient and I need to buy a pricey hosting (that allows at least 1Gb of space and many gigabytes of traffic). I don't want that. Instead I will share the file using eDonkey2000 network and give a link. It works just like the Freenet is supposed to work (although Freenet will work better) - if the demand is high, then many clients will have a [partial] copy and will help distributing it.
It also happens that someone places a legit N-megabyte file on his web-page, but after this file becomes popular ISP disables the account. Without filesharing systems the file is lost. With them it can remain available forever.
P.S. And note how many game-related sites set up their own P2P systems in order to distribute demos, trailers and other heavyweight stuff.

Another "special" edition is already availableTaken from here
This is something special for all Tolkien lovers here. When The Two Towers was released in cinemas, many people disliked (and some hated) the changes to Tolkien's story (Faramir, Ents, etc.). If you had similar feelings, this file is for you.
This is a re-edit of the DVD-screener that deals with most of the changes that people disliked. To name just the biggest ones: no Elves at HD, normal Faramir, normal Ents, Arwen doesn't leave, no "exorcism", etc. As a result, this version is about 40 minutes shorter, but it is superiour to the original release. The editing is seamless and it is amazing how the author of the reedit managed in some places to completely undo Jackson's changes and make something much more faithful to Tolkien.
So, enough talking, download and see for yourselves. You can also check the trailer first.

The Two Towers - Purist Edit
For those who are interested, there is a "Purist Edit" of The Two Towers floating around the Edonkey network. The quality isn't that great, being a rip of a rip squeezing 2 hours and 15 mins into 1 CD.
The purpose of the edit is to make the movie follow more closely to the original books. It's amazing the work the editor has done by selectively removing scenes and rearranging them - without messing up the sound synchronisation. Re:Who is everyone?
Try Overnet. They have a Linux client, they have set and forget. They have file hashes, multiple source downloading. They have very good file indexes from which you can get your MD4 hashes (you basically paste the hash into your client, and it merrily goes and gets the file from various places).
Overnet is the new serverless eDonkey client. The eDonkey network was not scalable because it relied on centralized servers (anyone could run a server, but it was centralized all the same). Overnet has no such problems and it works fantastically.
Have fun!

Combine with EMule and Overnet Instead
While refining the original protocol is all well and good, why not look towards intergration with other open networks now?
I've used em all, as they say, and while no one client is best for all applications I'd say the Emule development is damn close. Since it's Open Source and there are several main "production" versions from different groups plus individual modders putting out even more versions on the cutting edge of development. The best code gets quickly integrated all the way from the edge to the trunk, I've had my eye on their mod forums as well as the latest emule 27a thru 27c releases and things are really moving towards another great milestone release.
With the integration of Overnet support into EMule it now has the best of both worlds, with both public servers and client to client directories. Plus with weblink sites making it easy to find and add known good files to your queue, by batches if needed, it gives the end user the complete experiance of a mature tech.
At least Gnutella is open and may actually end up moving in this direction, I'm disappointed in hearing that the upcomming WinMX will still be closed, both their client and their network really have some good features but in the P2P world closed is death IMHO. As for me, I'll be waiting for the latest 27c EMule as modded by Sivka, my personal favorite at this time.

Re:If you can't wait until April 4th...
You linked to the 1CD version of the movie, which really blows, as it's not even a full CD in size. If you're going to bother downloading and watching the bootleg copy, at least snag the 2CD version.
-
If you can't wait until April 4th......you can always commit the criminal act of copyright infringement and download the fansubbed version of the movie ahead of time. (You will need the emule p2p app to download it.)
I know I did! I'm a filthy little pirate who's seen it thrice, and will see it once again at the theater, and again when it's finally on DVD.

ShareReactor.
One word.
ShareReactor.
Complete, well-ripped releases. Most of the good stuff is in the forums. Sure, it's slow during peak hours, but that's a small price to pay for knowing that everything will arrive, intact, full quality, checksummed.
Also, eMule is a really nice-looking client.
