mAkE aLL y0uR TeXt LoOK liKE tHis 4 co0Lseriously, if I see one more of these I'm going to reach though the monitor and strangle someone.
I'd say my personal favorite things are:
Consistent graphics - size your pictures to the size you want them viewed at. I went to a band homepage with a 4 meg jpeg. Uh no.
Consistent color scheme - single color background, complementary colors. (Easy to read!)
Poor user interfaces - If I can't figure your site out in 5 seconds, I'm off to Google.
Banner Ads - As long as they are unobtusive, (slashdot) I don't mind. If I find myself in the land of 10,000 banners, I'm gone. Make sure the ones you have are actually geared towards the site's info. eg - Hardware review site=no increase size of my software, thanks
Don't use 900 different fonts. Use fonts and font sizes to set sections apart, not sentences. Don't underline unless it's a link.
Animated GIFs - a personal pet peeve, especially 'Under Construction' digging dudes and dancing hamsters
Please check your links often, and update oftener! Nothing sucks as much as a site that's been dead for 2 years. If it's dead, put a bullet in it and take it down!
Real Audio(TM) - Just say no. I will not use the resource sucking, HD bloating, Info-Grabbing crap, and neither should you.
Test on every browser on every platform you can, not just the latest or your personal favorite.
No embedded MIDI. Ever. Period.
Just a couple off the top of my head...for real examples of what not to do, SomethingAwful has a good selection of sites. Plus, Photoshop Phriday is a hoot!
Enough!

Why should I care what Piro says, again?
He puts out an okay manga (a little too cliched and too close to the typical "AH! My Goddess" and "Hand Maid May" type of stories about some lonesome geek for it to be a "great" manga)
But anyways...
How is it that Piro can rant on what amounts to his personal weblog and people take notice?
First off, he doesn't cover the .com bombs at all! He only covers one specific model of offering a service for free and then turning it pay afterwards.
I don't even think that was (is) a business model to begin with. It was more a necessity after banner ads became obviously ineffective. Once you start losing revenue on a free service it's pretty obvious that you simply start charging for that service. Just look at Something Awful. Lowtax didn't charge for forum access initially, but after the whole eFront debacle and the realization that banner ads don't work, he had to turn it over to a pay site.
This wasn't a planned business model. It was the result of the necessity to recoup some lost revenue.
So right off Piro is dead wrong.
And then it all of a sudden turns into his own little time-machine going back to the days of his first 3x3 eyes web site and then goes into a (farily arrogant) rant about "Oh, I CREATE I don't copy".
Give me a break. This shouldn't even have made it on /.
I'm thinking Hemos was suffering from a mid-morning hangover when he put this through. There is _NOTHING_ worthwhile about this rant by Piro. Nothing that makes me THINK or QUESTION about the subject of the .COM failure. It isn't well organized or presented in a clear fashion.
You want some GOOD writing on the subject, go check out disenchanted.com and stop feeding your brain this Internet junk food crap. -

Robots are dangerous!
I was chatting with a robot genious MR Lowtax, who made robots like helper robots, shover robots and pusher robots. But then his shover robot started pushing his grandmother down the stairs! I said "LOOK OUT FRIEND" but he didn't listen. Next thing I know, the robot pushed him down the stairs too! I hope he is okay.

CmdrTaco, you are a complete ass... This "SLASHDOT" is in the doldrums.
Taco, you are a far cry from a Linus Torvalds or an Alan Cox, who can work WITH people and their community to make things BETTER; you make this place suck worse. You suck. You wield your stick of power, you and your fag editors.
John-fucking-Romero selling a car on Ebay? Indiana Jones 4? ANIME? You want anime? Take an episode of King of the Hill , cut the frame rate to 5 FPS, use thick black marker around the characters, incorporate lots of flashing lights, and come up with retarded character names like "Super Duper Atomic Man With Utmost Respect For Scallop". There you go, anime.
You don't have to be a KRESKIN to see that IT IS OVER. There is something, as Jeff K would say, SI BETTAR.
Oh yeah, CmdrTaco, remember when you linked to http://www.somethingawful.com/ , and you knew that Lowtax (who is a real person unlike Fag Rub Mold-aaaah) was having server trouble, and he made any slashdot referred hits go to goatse.cx? Remember that? Remember how you were a baby a FUCKING DELETED the story? You cry baby fucking tool bitch. Lowtax is god, you are a bitch. I hope your faggy cmdrtaco.net pictures end up on CLIFF YABLONSKI, and I hate you too you scum sucking mold queen
I would never presume to make Slashdot a 'freshmeat.net' or a 'sourceforge.net', that is to announce every picayune release of every little open-source project, but there have been some gross oversights here - particularly in light of the fact the very site and community relies on various core technologies and the distributions that in turn support those applications. My gripes are no longer relevant, as several releases of important things have gone unnoticed and honorable maintainers of the unsaid projects don't get recognized by the site that proclaims to be "news for nerds." What a crock.
I have also attempted to post using precedent. Doesn't help. What was front page worthy a week, month or year ago isn't again because I'm not an editor - even if the context and circumstance is the same. Bill Gates could die, and I'll bet anything I would never get the post, even if I knew a day in advance. Death, dark, painful, death to you who hold the scepter of power.
You betrayed your community, you are a lucky bitch like Bill Gates, right place, right time. I hope to the powers that be you quit being the "leader" of this dirty unreadable mess you call slashcode and hand the scepter of power to someone who can RESPECT his community.
And a tip for you; you elitist jerk: Tell people why, besides blind stupidity or bias, you reject stories! You can't - that would be like seeing the M$ source code, it would be a laughing stock to actually reveal your twisted half-assed reasoning.
No wonder the Taco Snotting FAQs and all sorts of shit comes out on here, and all the crap flooding and trolling. YOU FAILED as a leader, you betrayed your community and you suck. I love slashdot for the others that come here, and the news ends up being better than shit (not hard to do in a world full of mega-omnipediaplex corporations that spew forth garbage 'news'), but the editors here are biased, unfair and categorically suck; I hope you all re-evaluate how lucky you are to have jobs, you suck at interviews, you suck at content and community management. You are not the "portal for nerds," the Yahoo for nerds if you will. You are a petty band of garbage vendors who have duped a larger company into giving you jobs so they can spray ads in our faces.
Give this project to a real person who has sex with people and doesn't fuck blow up dolls of anime characters and plays video games and "hack" Perl for a living. God damn loser. And pick up a book on Perl idioms. And your fucking arcade thing is so fucking gay, why would you want to stand and play a fucking game? Fucking retard.
DIE.
Reading Slashdot with a threshold to prevent reading stupid stuff is like putting a shit filter on your ass. The problem is, some of the worst SHIT comes from the editors.
I think that the anti-Microsoft sentiment is simply due to their having been so successful selling a lot of crap. -Woz

The Great Lie
I keep hearing the same argument over and over again that I figure it deserves some recognition.
The Great Lie is as follows: Without us (your friendly neighborhood content conglomerate) the entire well of human creativity would dry up!
Let me elaborate. They're saying that without the RIAA and it's member companies, nobody would create any more music! Without the MPAA and the big studios, we'd never see any more new movies. The Lie is that without big, greedy corporations continuing Business As Usual, nothing new or original would ever produced, ever.
History proves otherwise, though. Already we've seen small bands create their own music and give it away online, just for the exposure. In a few years of technological advancement, any talented bunch of people will be able to make their own "Hollywood style" movie at home. Writings? Ha! People will gladly write free work on any subject imaginable.
Heck, some people even lose money bringing original content to the masses.
So you see, whatever happens, you can't stifle human creativity. No matter how hard you try. We don't need Them to entertain us anymore; and the only reason they're still around - the only reason they were ever around in the first place - is by our good graces. -
Big Whoop
I could critise Microsoft over this (but this is probably just a few odd employees who did this), but then I'd be a hypocrite because I have participated in ballot stuffing before.
About two months ago, Entertainment Weekly did a poll on Entertainer of the year. It was soon posted on Fark and then slowly migrated itself to the Something Awful forums. Now, we decided to ballot stuff it with "Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka" due to the fact that they didn't have any sort of security method to stop people from doing multiple votes.
It soon became a battle when the Shack News forums and some other forum started a battle with us. So we then got cocky and wrote various scripts in langauges varying from Perl to JavaScript (I wrote a script in mIRC considering I wanted to write it in a small bit of time). From all of our efforts, Lowtax got over 500,000 votes.
Yes, Lowtax was on top, but then they took the site down and then reopened it with a security measure and a little comment in the webpage taunting us. A few weeks later the results came out and I am not sure who got into the Top 10, but Lowtax and Something Awful DID get a mention in an article they wrote later.
If I hadn't done that, I'd be saying things differently here. -
Weak.
Some idiot threatened to sue some other idiot. People are always bluffing on the internet, and there's especially funny about this particular bluff. There are better legal threats here.

Re:The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
You are probably thinking of Something Awful's review of Tom Sawyer in the Rompit.
Warning: Lowtax has in the past redirected links from slashdot to goatse.cx to avert slashdotting. You have been warned.
By the way, I'm not sure how "fair" the review of Tom Sawyer is, since the reviewer did not speak Japanese and could only go by the graphics when he reviewed the game. -

Hmm..
Well, the reason I posted this was to see some constructive critism. About 80% of the posts I've read didn't bother to read the article. I agree, the article itself proposes a un-doable solution. However, I feel it could be expanded upon.
A lot of people here say they want the web to remain free, etc. etc. Bring it back to the way it was, and so on. The bottom line is, tons of sites that would form a niche part of the web and be beneficial to the community are knocked off the radar because they cannot afford the hosting. Sites like MSN, CNN, and yes, Slashdot, stay up because they are members of a few elite that can afford quality hosting.
A small, trivial, compensation for sites from many hands would make a HUGE difference. Not enough to make a profit, just enough to keep the site running. As such, it would have to be proportional to the number of visitors. Ask any webmaster who has tried to make a decent sized community site/hobby site/etc and they'll probably tell you that they were doing it at a loss. Hell even the ones that are up are only up because their webmasters have been dropping unnecessarily large amounts of cash and/or they've sold out.
Now of course, the Slashdot population will yell in response "We didn't ask them to do it! It's their problem if they can't afford it!" Well, of course this is true. But the question becomes, wouldn't an extra 5 or 10 bucks from your wallet each to pay for the hosting of sites you find on the web be worth them not dying in a few weeks? Wouldn't you rather Malda, Lowtax, or whoever spend more time writing/coding the site than stressing out and sucking dick for money so they can provide you with something for free? I've been fortunate enough with my hosting, being entirely donated, but just the experiences I had with half-empty make me realize how much it sucks that someone can't come up with a good idea for the web and not be able to deploy it without reaching into their wallet (I'll give you my time, but I won't give you my money! :)), begging for scraps, or plastering dicks and tits all over the place.
Of course I wouldn't expect people to pay an extra $100 a month for this. It wouldn't be necessary. Come up with ideas. For example, a client side program that logs the hits and sends information about domains to the ISP and the ISP forwards the money.
The idea is not to worry about how people will circumvent it (they will) and how people in "non-rich" countries will afford it (they won't be involved.) Over the long haul though, the extra dollar here or there thrown to sites by non-circumventing users would make a HELL of a difference. A penny might be too high. A page might be a bad measurement. Get past the damn details and try to see the point! :)
I agree that there are flaws in the design of this model. You're right, the web can be free, but I am of the opinion that with the amount of bandwidth and people using it the untapped potential if left completely free is enormous. If individuals with ideas could just execute them without worrying about hosting, the results would be amazing, IMHO. Chew on that, and instead of bitching about why this won't work, acknowledge why we do or don't need to help web admins show us their work, and propose a means of doing so! -

Question: Do You Have Stairs In Your House?
Space Robot Bonanza -
Next up, pusher and shover robots.
The shover robot pushes people around, and the pusher robot shoves bread down their throats.
Are there stairs in your house? -
It's happening again
Every time the tech world comes out with a new toy (e.g. the internet, T.V.), people who barely understand the technology themselves have an incredible desire to regulate it and control it.
The internet is the epitome of free speech; that's it's greatest quality. Anyone can say or show anything that they please. This is what free speech is all about: the expression of thoughts and ideas. I don't understand what is so wrong with this kind of ethos that parents and government officials who know approximately "how to turn on a computer" scream for regulation.
If we regulate the internet, we condemn it to oblivion. This amazing new world which has functioned completely fine by its own, without regulation, suddenly has recieved a surge of the technlogically incompetent. These people, whose internet skills roughly equate to knowing how to click on their AOL buttons, suddenly stumble across something they don't like. "Oh no! That kind of stuff is on the world wide internet world web thing! This is evil and terrible! I must find a way to take it off so that other people aren't exposed to this horrid filth!" Has anyone else noticed that the only people who complain are those who just started using "that web thing"?
Guess what? The internet is the way it is because it came there naturally. Enough people laugh at things on College Humor to allow that website to survive. Enough people look at porn to make it a profitable business. Enough people find Something Awful's Awful Link of the Day stupid enough to keep going every day. The internet isn't THEIR world; it's yours, it's ours, it's everyone's.
These people don't understand that the internet survived simply because it was an unlimited and unrestricted venue of the freedom of speech. They don't understand that voluntary ratings, governmental regulations, emailing with threats to sue, and any other measure won't work due to the decentralized structure of the internet. It won't work because they have no idea how the internet even truly functions. It won't work because they have no idea of the history of the internet, and how it came to be how it is. This is a Good Thing(TM).
When the internet becomes as heavily regulated as T.V., it will be the incarnation of the true evil in this world that keeps showing it's face over and over again: human beings telling other human beings exactly what they can and can't fucking do.

I was in my golden robe looking for anti-Scientology lies on the Internet, and came across something horrible. As you all know the internet is GOD and as a devout Scientologist I feel it is my duty to purge the lies they lay festering in the backside of my Lord like thorns of ignorance and small bank accounts.
When I came across something awful (the pun is delightful) I almost cried. (Well I did but that was because my mom turned off my computer for 3hours.)
