Re:Whaaaaa!
Actually, in your attempt to simply be a rude troll, you proved yourself wrong.
A few links to illustrate that what happens in a game, or can be caused by a game, can actually touch the real world:
Everquest Widows unite
City of Heroes players honor Christopher Reeve
Note that many of these articles, while mentioned here on Slashdot, also have links to "other" news outlets, such as Gamespot, CNN, etc. In addition, games like GTA 3 have gotten a lot of press lately, even in the mainstream media. Don't you think you're being short sighted to imply that games no longer have an effect on mainstream culture? -
The Thund.. er... er, Team America is Go!
Watching TechTV on Saturdays got me hooked on The ThunderBirds, and the same reportedly inspired Parker/Stone to make this flick. It looks just as fun, if not more so, than the original.
Can't wait! -

I'm still bitter about this[techtv] screw up:(
Apparently, an intelligent network about tech was something a microsoft shareholder certainly doesn't want:( -
Old episodes...
Does anyone know if TechTV will still be letting users watch old episodes online or by request (e.g., copy of the episode). I am particular looking for video segment on The Ant Farm case mod (invalid link now) online or on tape/whatever media. I did e-mail TechTV staff a few months ago after this mod story was posted on
/., but never received a response. I doubt I will get one after sending another request today. Anyone got this segment in their TechTV collection? ;)
I managed to savage the Web pages and thumbnails from Google Caches. Archive.org didn't have this Web story when I tried the original URL. :( -
for those too lazy to actually type in the URL

PHP-Nuke?
This is a nice comparison for would-be bloggers, but I'm honestly suprised that PHP-Nuke wasn't mentioned. For a relatively easy to setup CMS, PHP-Nuke has come a long way
...Some would say, though, that "blogging is dead" or at least experiencing the "long slow slide of weblogs into irrelevance". My hope for anyone wanting to set up their own blog is that they find something useful to write about or turn instead to good 'ol pen and paper whilst they ponder the stealing their neighbor's cat (as get read often on Unscrewed at TechTV).

No, I don't think so. But you might want to read this if you feel brave enough to fix it yourself.

The Best-selling games don't have any of the 3 Gs
The myth that the 3 Gs and PPLQ make a game a commercial success is perpetuated by the mistaken notion that all gamers are sexually frustrated teenage boys.
Instead, according to TechTV, the 5 most commercially successful PC games ever are:
5. Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?
4. Flight Simulator
3. The Sims
2. MP Roller Coaster Tycoon
1. Myst
Absolutely none of the three Gs anywhere on this list, unless you count rollercoasters breaking or blurry simulated nudity.
By contrast, BMX XXX only succeeded at being controversial. -

Re:Rock on, Nintendo
And from what I read the 2-10hrs of battery life for the PSP were depending on how you used it. Quote from this techtv article...
"Sony claims the battery fuels two and a half hours of video playback, eight hours of gaming, or 10 hours of music." -
Could laptops once again be portable?
With gaming laptops weighing in at nearly 10lbs. and a battery life between 50 minutes and two hours, it seems they are less than portable.
Perhaps the Lithium-Sulfur batteries can provide a reasonable amount of time without adding weight--bringing portability back to laptops. Afterall, all of the wireless technologies are useless when you're tied to an AC outlet.

Re:I don't agree
"Alternatively, the FBI/CIA could just install snooping boxes at network hubs, but again this isn't practical for realtime searches given the volume of mail going around the world every day."
Remember Carnivore? That's what they told us they were doing. What else may they be doing without our knowledge? -
No more international feedComcast have given 30 days notice to companies subscribed to the international TechTV feed that the international channel will be closed. It seems G4techTV will be USA-only.
The international TechTV feed was a severely watered down version of the USA channel. It had a fraction of the shows, heavily repeated. Despite this it did pick up quite a number of viewers.

Re:Well, maybe not the first time...
Yes, I noticed your attempt at humor but will answer your first question anyway:
No, it's not legal. It's called cookie jar accounting.
Not that Microsoft would let the illegality of it stop them from doing it. They actually forced their chief of internal audits to resign because he wanted to report it to the authorities. He then sued them under the Whistleblowers Protection Act, but of course Microsoft settled it out of court (read: gave him a bunch of money to go away and be quiet.)
Just like with every other wrong thing they've been caught doing, Microsoft refused to admit or deny they ever did it, but promised to stop doing it-- something that only makes sense in the American legal system. -

Re:Won't someonebody think about the clueless?!
If it hadn't been for Kevin's recent Dark Tip about Linux on Linksys routers, I wouldn't own the router I have now, the WRT54G. Although they did not make it clear on the show there is only one (now two) router model(s) that can be modified and despite the fact that it isn't really a "Dark Tip" because compiling firmware from GPL'd code isn't a hack nor very dark, I still found it to be a very useful segment.

Tech Jobs???
I like the link on the TechTV page that says "Hot Tech Jobs" link. I'm sure they'll all be visiting the same links soon.
Also wonder if they will soon be needing to place a Call For Help. *da-doom-chish!* -

The real reason... ;)
Hmm, I think we can see why at least one employee would be "let go"... Reading your coworkers' AIM conversations and talking about it on TV would probably do it (watch the video clip). Stumbling their Wifi access points might have something to do with it, too...

Hey, the taser project was a good one. I made one and had lots of fun burning the chrome off of my screwdriver. I don't want to shock anyone because it looks pretty painful.

Re:maybe
According to a TechTV In the glory days of film, only about 100 new adult titles were made every year. With the handheld camcorder, porn directors could complete an entire film in one day with a small production budget. Today, more than 10,000 adult films are produced every year in America alone. So I am guessing 100 DVDs would only fit about a month's worth not every title ever made.

Re:Can't get over it
Without the firmware, that router of yours would cease working.
Give more credit than that.
I realize they won't work, but firmware should not be a core component of a hardware company, they should work on their hardware first, and not consider firmware a company-breaking secret technology.
For instance, open firmware makes this possible. -
Re:Radical cheap solution
A cool thing you can do (I've tried that at my girlfriend's house) is have the laptop connected to the back of the stereo system and TV as well through S-Video, and then with Win XP Professional (should work on Linux as well with some differences) do the remote desktop connection from your desktop PC.
This way you can sit and read Slashdot, while having the laptop window open and change the music in the stereo system any time you please.
I owned a ew5000 for 2 days, and returned it afterwards, couldn't take the clumsy setup. Even though it costs around $100, which is far below any decent laptop, it could only do MP3 shared through the wireless as well as JPEGs (on TV screen). Took the sucker back, had no streaming capabilities, the MP3s were decoded locally, so no OGG, AAC, Real, WMA support, and no radio, of course. -
Rio rules
Interesting that Rio, originally from Diamond, is making the top mp3 player (imnsho), the Karma. One of (if not the) first mp3 players was the Rio PMP300, whose button design may have inspired the iPod's. Seems like Rio is still in step with preempting tech trends, with a player that supports OGG and FLAC, has two RCA outputs to connect to a home stereo system, and file transfers via ethernet.

Re:I thought...
Actually, the term 'spam' was actually coined by the Monty Python team, and that sketch with the Vikings singing 'spam spam spam spam (etc)' and drowning everyone else. This seemed to cover the description of the mass email, and the term stuck.

Re:Lessig's latest book available free online
I have read Free Culture, I downloaded it for free, printed it at work, popped it into a three-ring binder and read it inside a week. This is the first book I have read of his, but I have listened to a speech of his from the 2002 O.Reilly Open Source Conference and seen him in television interviews from time to time. Lessig makes clear, convincing points - he has the gift of making complex issues understandable. He is respected and likeable, and will be a strong asset to FSF in the trials to come.

Re:In Google We Trust
They also could have an admin-side interface to search any given user's account for any given keyword (since that search is already presented to each user) which they'd run when presented with a valid legal warrant.
The issue here is not whether Google *could* search a user's email for a keyword; we all know they can. The question is whether or not they *would*. The U.S. District court last year decided that the RIAA could not subpoena ISPs to reveal the identities of users who have violated copyright laws on the network. I don't see GMail being any different: since GMail is not involved in the communication, but merely the conduit for it, it's not responsible for the content, nor does it have a legal obligation to reveal the identity of a person using the service.
However, I also see 1GB of email storage being highly abused by the mp3 trading community, and as a storage medium. If copyright-infringing files are stored on Google's servers, it would be a different issue. But in that case, the authorities (meaning the police, not the RIAA) would be able to present a valid warrant and Google would have to turn over the contents of that user's account. No searching would be involved... just turn over all the data the warrant requests.
I can't think of a legal instance where Google would be required to search emails for keywords for the authorities, in order to, for example, look for child molestors or potential terrorists. That would be in clear violation of Google's privacy policy and several federal laws, and the authorities would likely have to come up with a specific name and a warrant. -

Re:robot wars
I see individuals on techtv quite frequently that claim to build robots. No I don't mean robot wars (a.k.a. attack of the killer radio controlled car).
I can't think of any big companies making them. In the US, it seems to be an underground geek/research scene. However, I'm pretty certain the US Army, et al, are actively working on robots for military purposes. That means it will probably one day end up with a consumer applications. -

Re:Consoles will win outFPS games are not the best selling games. Not by a long shot. The best selling games for the PC are:
1: Myst
2: Rollercoaster Tycoon
3: The Sims (and the expansion packs)
4: MS Flight Simulator
5: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
6: Riven: The Sequel to Myst
7: MS Age of Empires II: Age of Kings
8: Monopoly Game
9: Lego Island
10: DiabloNot an FPS game in the bunch. Now, I love DOOM, Quake (1/2/3:A), etc... but I'm not most gamers.

Re:RobotWars
I dunno what Robot Wars your watching, but the UK one is a really good show.
Well, acording to the TechTV website, it is the UK version, albeit somewhat old compared to what might be running in the UK now. (Not living in the UK and not being able to access the robotwars.co.uk webiste at the time of posting, I cannot verify this claim.)
But then again, being Canadian and watching it on Space, I have no idea how TechTV is handling it. -
Re:who has TechTV?Tech TV covers some interesting things, however, if you are an experienced 'net user you have probably seen everything they cover well in advance of when it actually airs. They even covered gray area things like , DVD copying
,password "recovery", etc., sometimes I just scan it to get a reminder about new gadgets and such . .To summarize sometimes it will bring info to you that you probably would have otherwise thought of, but forget to check on etc. Albeit not the extremely technical stuff. It can also be used as a quick reminder of the current HOT tech topics, personally, I forget alot of stuff that I am interested in because there is so much.
