    Does someone know if packet writing is in?

    In kernelnewbies status list it is listed as pre-2.6.0 stuff, and the patch has been around for ages. I very much hope we will finally be able to use CD-RW's instead of the antique floppy drive. It is frustrating and somewhat embarrasing Linux still does not support this feature. I assume DVD-RAM/-RW/+RW etc. also depend on this?

    No, I don't get that. Have a look at Sweden, our dear friend Bredbandsbolaget (ISP) offers consumers 10Mbit for $30 and has done so for years. It was actually cheaper a couple of years ago, only $20. I don't have that ISP, but I got an offer from mine that this fall we can get 26Mbit for $35 a month. And Sweden is not a overcrowded country. There has to be something else. Better competition? Could be. Our government agency that handles these issues has been really, really consumer-friendly (as they are supposed to be), and forced companies with monopoly to let other companies get access to their network and sometimes even just lower their prices! I love them! :)

    Some notes from my personal experiences with 2.5 on certain hardware:

    Those of you who want to use the closed NVidia drivers with 2.5 can find the necessary patches here

    2.5.71 also introduced a new native mode driver for synaptics touchpads. You'll need to download the X11 driver and I saw it mentioned that the cvs version of GPM has support if you use that as well.

    "no. of viruses * FUD (mostly started from antivirii corp's.) == MONEY?" to do with each other?

    I just did a a few quick google searches to find out what the proportional realotion ship there is between the markets, by comparing the search resulst with each other (the number of hits I got). Cleary one can't rely to much on these numbers, but to get a picture over the proportions it's good enough, as google is one of the leading search engines out there with it's large database and that it almost allways finds what your searching for (I say almost, as it isn't perfect!)

    These are the results (in order of fewest hits):
    1. OS X: | search string | - Results: 7,080 | Portion of market: 0.980%
    2. Unix: | search string | - Results: 42,000 | Portion of market: 5.811%
    3. Linux: | search string | - Results: 85,100 | Portion of market: 11.774%
    4. MAC: | search string | - Results: 85,600 | Portion of market: 11.843%
    5. Windows: | search string | - Results: 503,000 | Portion of market: 69.592%

    And could it be that the 69.592% of the market don't want to lose it's revenues? As some few guy/girs posted (funny comments) here eariler, something in the lines of "why don't they virii's as the made them back-then?". Could it be that todays lame virii's only are to spread FUD to customers, so that those not-so-skilled-in-the-arts-of-computers hurry out and buy a copy of a antivirii software, just to be on the safe side (I have my own mother as a very good example, every time she hears "viiirrriiii"-warnings she comes to me panicinc "is my computer safe, don't I need to upgrade my antivirri?, am I realy safe").

    The fartor of the FUD can be explain something like this, "( exagerations make by antivirii/security corps. * exagerating of losses made by businesses) * ignorant reportes == real scary FUD", the customer/end-users is surrounded by in the media (with exceptions for slashdot, ppl here are mostly geeks, and gotzkills! =))

    Is to build a Tesla turbine. That way you can harness energy AND eventually watch them fly to pieces.

    Seriously, the tesla turbine design is worth a look from any hobbyist. Since it's bladeless, it can handle a lot nastier conditions than a typical bladed turbine can, and is also much simpler to build (my friend's built several breath-powered models out of paper and cardboard).

    VB does have it's uses. No. Nobody's going to write Doom 3 with VB but it's not as limited as people tend to think it is.

    A proof of concept (2 fps) port of Quake has been ported to Game Park's GP32 handheld. The author claims that integerization of the arithmetic would bring it up to full frame rate.

    This reminds me of something else you can do for fun, with chemistry.

    Develop your own photographs (fun, but not tedious enough). Better yet, create your own PCBs (fun, and very tedious). As with the mirrors, you end up with something worthwhile when you're done.

    If you're just looking for some pointless fun, drop round pennies in Tinning solution. See how many people you can trick into thinking it's a nickel.

    In Sweden and a bunch of other countries AP:s have been placed in a lot of hotels, airport lounges, train stations and so on. This is called Telia Homerun. It is a bit on the expensive side, but it really works fine. It would be nice if more companys like Telia could make some agreement and let users access their account on any of the involved networks. Like cell phone roaming. I once spoke with a technician from Telia who told me they were trying seamless roaming between cell phone data (HSCSD, GPRS) and the Homerun networks. That would be pretty nice. A slow connection with great coverage and a highspeed connection with low coverage, in wait of a highspeed connection with good coverage.

    The xlib based backend is still the primary backend, but there are alternatives: there's an experimental GhostScript-based backend, and there's back-art, which uses libart and freetype to render stuff.     I admit, I find the scoring systems on some games (such as Attack From Mars) a little absurdly inflated. In fact, you can see where AFM's software begins to break after a certain number of points because they didn't allow for the game's multi-billion scores - it truncates the highest significant digit in the high score list. Bleh!

    Ever rolled a machine over? On some games such as Space Invaders, this is incredibly easy to do! Score enough points, and it rolls over from 9,999,990 (IIRC) to 0,000,000. On a machine that has an auto replay that kicks in at a certain score, you can collect this twice (or more) in a game.

    It may not get you into the high score list, but rolling over a machine is one of the coolest awards in pinball (aside from, of course, being Grand Champion).

    Also, whenever playing pinball, be sure to watch out for easter eggs! Some of these are just amusing, but others will help you score extra points or enter special game modes. I particularly like the hidden video poker mode on Star Trek: The Next Generation, mainly because it makes all the other people in the arcade stare and say "I didn't know it could do that..."

    May pinball live on forever!

    Farnsworth did have the first electronic television system that worked. He had real problems with camera sensitivity, though. The Farnsworth Image Dissector was a very low sensitivity device. Zworklin's Iconoscope wasn't much better. Light levels around 75,000 lux (!) were required. Today's cameras require 0.5 to 10 lux. Not until the image orthicon (needing around 200 lux), developed around 1940, did cameras become usable.

    So Farnsworth didn't really have a commercializable technology. Worse, he got to the demo level during the Great Depression, a lousy time to get funding for a long-term R&D project.

    It took RCA well over a decade to make television work commercially. It was hard to build a good TV camera tube.

    If you look at the tube designs, you can see the problem. The image dissector had no light integration; only the light falling on the beam spot at the moment of scan was sensed. In other words, only one pixel time's worth of light contributed to the output signal. Farnsworth put in all the amplification he could, with a photomultiplier-like arrangement within the tube. But it wasn't enough.

    Zworklin's Iconoscope integrated light over the whole frame time, but didn't amplify the output within the camera tube. That wasn't enough either.

    It was clear that using both ideas together would help the sensitivity problem, but it took over a decade at RCA and elsewhere to make that work. Both approaches came together in the image orthicon, which was big, expensive, complicated, and required lots of support electronics, but delivered a good image. The sort of thing you'd expect from a big industrial research lab.

    Hardware isn't as important in chess (ok, ASIC's would probably make a big difference) as in other programs. A factor of two in hardware speed difference would not even give one more ply in search depth, it will probably change it's rating by about 50-70 points but no more. Remember, chess has a very high number of branches per node (about 30), and a big factor in the strength of the program is to find smart ways to reduce that branching factor. I agree, though, that is not a good benchmark. This is just one more tournament. There are a lot of these every year (somehow, this one made it to slashdot).     How to switch workspaces: There are multiple-workspace window managers for Windows. VirtuaWin is the one I use.

    How to switch to console: DOS fullscreen mode. It's true that I don't often switch to a fullscreen dos session (i.e. text mode) under Windows. I'll let you know how that works out.

    You're right, though. Part of the problem is that I do things with Linux that I'd never try with Windows.

    It looks cool, but with the exception of hideously overpriced software, I'm very happy with my Psion Series 5mx. 16 meg, flash slot, IR port, serial port, and a keyboard (doesn't come with anything like graffiti, but Scribble works fairly well and it's free). It works fine using my cell phone as a modem or even a regular external modem.
    (Side note: Can palms do this as well? I know about hooking them up to GPS with serial cables).

    Over here in Sweden, Banverket (the company responsible for the railways) upgraded their signal systems a few years ago. The signaling is now done over fibers. And, since they were replacing cables anyway, they put in some spare capacity (well, a lot of spare capacity). This has led to that Banverket is now the single biggest backbone provider in Sweden, apart from Telia, the phone company.

    However, over the last half-year or so, everyone and their mother seems eager to put their own fibers into the ground, so this may change in the future. But right now, I think I can say that almost all of the network providers in Sweden are renting fibers from the railway company for long-distance connectivity.

    How much of the purchase price of a new CD do you think the artist gets? And how much goes to the record company and the various middle-men?

    Not nearly enough. Something like 40-50 cents... I am acutely aware of this because nearly all of my favorite bands have been royally screwed by their record companies in the past few years. If you get bored, look up what EMI records did to Marillion just in time for their 1997 US tour...

    But realize I am not defending the middlemen. I am defending my ability to have the kind of music I like, made and produced by the few people who can do it. I have demanding musical tastes; perhaps a hundred virtuoso musicians in the entire world meet my rigorous standards. But since I take music so seriously, since my musical collection makes such a significant contribution to my happiness, a lot would be missing from my life if John Petrucci had not bothered to learn to play the guitar. Even if he had, I would never have heard him if 'Pull Me Under' wasn't played on KSHE-95; and I am sure that KSHE would not have played them if they hadn't recieved a free cd from the record company.

    Still, I realize that the RIAA is an evil organization. My fiance' was a radio DJ for (several) Colorado rock stations, and tells stories about being forced to play only songs on the official playlists; simply an example of the RIAA misusing its powers to crush non-member recording groups by not allowing them airtime. I remember one particular instance she was literally forced to recite a list of good things about the new Green Day single, even though she hated it, so that it would sell well. If she didn't, the record company would have refused to pay "maintenance fees" to the station, and she would have lost her job. Any organization that would cause Green Day and the Spice Girls to become cultural icons obviously has serious issues.

    Because I enjoy music that is not exactly popular in this country, I usually have to order CD's directly from bands I find in obscure clubs by word of mouth. If I get really lucky, CDNOW will help me. I hate this! I hate walking down the aisles at Best Buy and finding nothing of enough merit to pay for. But killing copyright laws won't solve that; instead of being filled with crap, the shelves would become empty. Or, more likely, RIAA would find starving musicians of mediocre talent and use their music anyway, thereby achieving the same dominance as today except royalty-free.

    In a perfect world, every penny I spend to get my latest fix would go straight to the musicians. People who made good music would be rich then whether they sold 50,000 copies or 6 million copies... but the solution articulated in the article is comparable to industrial murder, regardless of what 'philosophical' viewpoint you take. You have to be very naive to believe that people who are forced to work day jobs because they give away their music, will make the same quality music as people who are allowed to concentrate on their art by copyrighting it, selling it and becoming as wealthy as possible.

    PS. good web page Greg- you might want to check out The Gathering, a Dutch prog metal band. Their female lead vocalist is tremendous, with strong, ethereal vocals, and the band itself is reminiscent of Rush/Yes... very powerful and deft guitar work. Start with Nighttime Birds or Mandylion.
