Darn - need to stock up on rare earth magnets at..
...Thinkgeek.com
http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/science/770f/ -
Don't sue -- beat 'em in sales!
while my initial reaction, too, was "sue the bastards", why not just direct our nerd dollars toward ZenMagnets?
I emailed thinkGeek through their website:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/brain/custserv/gethelp.cgiHere is my email to thinkGeek:
"[homer]Hello NASA, how come I can't get no tang?! Errr, I mean how come I can't get no Zen Magnets on your website? It's been 4.5 hours since the BuckyBalls / ZenMagnets DMCA takedown notice debacle hit
/. -- why no Zen yet? :-)Seriously, if you've not yet watched the video linked below, you should. The idiocy and the snot-nosed sense of entitlement demonstrated by the takedown-notice-issuing CEO of Buckyballs is as appalling as his actions. DMCA abuse has no place in the nerd community (or anywhere for that matter). Let the nerds decide who they want to support -- and what better website through which to do that than thinkGeek? Thank you for your attention to this matter.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7Tka4NUmUo " /emailToThinkGeekREMEMBER: the Zen guy asked that people not bombard the buckyball CEO with hate mail. Abiding by his request would allow a small company (run by a true nerd, no less) to fluorish by raking in our nerd-earned dollars, all the while doing it with class, honesty and (what appears to be) a superior product.
FWIW, I have nothing to do Zen or Buckball, nor do I own either of their products. I'm just beyond all friggin belief disgusted with the conduct of this Jake guy. And to think, buckyballs *were* on my thinkGeek wish list.

Re:E-Readers in a phone
First, let me say that I fully agree with you, IndustrialComplex. I have good news for you, in fact.
1. A micro projector (spreadsheets, documents, and the like require a much larger display than a cell phone)
2. A projection keyboard. (8 finger + thumb typing would be necessary to even get close to the interface speed of a home PC)
3. A projection trackpad. (Tracks your finger motions over a flat surface as if it were a standard trackpad)Now, granted, 3 isn't a projection trackpad, but it should work just about as well, I'd think. Heck, no reason solution 2 couldn't be used for 3 as well. We're not there yet, but we're DAMN CLOSE! Just a bit more refining & miniaturization 'till it's all in the same device! Future ho!

cmdrtaco is a LIAR.from cmdrtaco:
I lust for the day when every piece of media I have can be played from a single device. I suspect it'll never happen.
But what makes the Ultio so special you say? Simply put, it's got everything you want in a digital media player.
so which one is a lie, LIAR?
slashdot = stagnated.

Re:Here's MY list
by
.Bruce PerensSomeone didn't pay much attention to Ender's Game. Period belongs at the end of the name. Of course, and underscore might have been better here.
2. Bathe periodically.
I bathe all the time.
5. Parents will eventually charge rent.
So do landlords, incidentally.
7. CTL-C, CTL-V. Took me 15 years until someone showed me that shortcut.
This ought to blow your mind then: CTL-X
8. The sun, it burns.
Funny, I figured that out long before I owned a computer.
9. As far as your family is concerned, "network admin," "programming," "database management,"
... to them, it's all "computers."It's good practice for talking to Management later.

Re:My Setup
I run PS3MediaServer on my fileserver. Streams (and trancodes when necessary) over the network to my PS3. Works well.
I would frequently get stuttering with this setup, even just doing flac audio files.
I'm thinking of one of these:

Any experiences here? It looks great from the description.

Re:The charts and numbers given don't prove anythi
In particular, without knowing how many applications were rejected, we don't know whether the USPTO is approving a higher percentage of applications, or whether they have just increased up their processing rates.
It would also help to know how applicants have been behaving over the last year. Have they been abandoning patent applications with claims that are too difficult to get through? If so, that would have meant that patent examiners have had stronger applications on their desks, and it would make sense that more patents applications would be allowed. 2009 saw an increase in application abandonments (perhaps budgets for intellectual property protection underwent greater scrutiny because of the economic downturn). Were weaker applications abandoned more often than stronger applications? Maybe.
It is worth nothing that the article contained a bit of misinformation in saying that "Because patent examiners were judged on how efficient they were -- meaning how many patents they were able to complete their analysis of in the short amount of time they had. So here's the problem: if you approve a patent, you're done. If you reject a patent, the inventor (well, the lawyers) get an unlimited number of times to change the examiners mind, resubmitting modified applications." This information isn't complete. An examiner receive credit when a patent application is allowed and when a patent application is abandoned. This includes when a patent applicant files a Request for Continued Examination (RCE). The amount of credit an examiner receives for multiple RCEs has diminished, but an applicant who continues to make weak arguments could see an application rejected over-and-over again without ever receiving a patent.
Get all those facts, number of examiners, number of applications rejected, etc., and then you might be able to draw some conclusions.
Why base conclusions on facts when it so much more fun to jump to them instead?

Just like many other things of this nature...
RFID really is something that needs to have an eye kept on, but sensationalist headlines make it seem worse than it is.
Of course, if you're really worried about it, there are options depending on what you need to protect.

Electric pencil sharpener
I'm still waiting for ThinkGeek (or a similar outfit) to start selling an electric pencil sharpener that fits in a standard drive slot of my PC and is powered from the PSU of the PC. Keeping the wood and graphite particles away from the innards of the computer may pose a problem.

Re:Interesting...
Day 31 - Well, I quietly snuck out the air conditioning vents on the roof late last night. Before I left I set up a few Annoy-A-Trons, Eviltrons, and TV Poltergeists here and there in the facility to convince them I or my ghostly spirit might still be around. Hopefully it will be a while before they find the fully-functional nuclear reactor I built in the basement, or the wireless camera feeds I installed in the washrooms. A great learning experience overall. Will recommend!

Re:OK, too far.
IT only needs the hardware to be ubiquitous for plans to change.
Case in point: Without USB being on every modern PC several years, stores would not sell you USB webcameras, USB dolls, USB lights and USB beer coolers. For kicks, nobody would have dared market a serial-port version of this
Few of those applications of the hardware were planned at the 1996 release of the USB standard.

Re:You didn't look hard enough.
If this doesn't work for you then I recommend that you hunt down a USB version of any Thrustmaster controller, such as the Thrustmaster Firestorm.
YOU didn't read hard enough - that was already suggested, and responded to.

Re:It's illegal, for one ...
You're not allowed to install any device that interferes with the deployment of the air bag.
So that's what happened to all those infomercials for The Club!
you'll have t prove you're more intelligent than a pet rock to buy one
Well, there is now a USB Pet Rock, so that threshold is still very low.

Re:How to do it properly
nope, just make the accelerometer send out mouse signals, or an app to translate the data that way, why would games need to be modified for touch? an FPS tilting the tablet would send WASD key presses.
But the game you linked did nothing with the accelerometer. What would be cool is http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/keyboards-mice/77ba/ but as a multitouch surface with on screen buttons, and palm rejection. I wonder how hard it would be to set up one of those displaylink monitors to do that.
