Re:Damnit April Fools Day I Hate You
I would so buy that.
So tell them. If enough people want it, they'll make it.

The other ThinkGeek April Fool items
If you look at the bottom of the iCade page for suggestions, you will find things like a knife that makes noises depending on what you cut, canned unicorn meat, a secrets bear that lets you spy on kids, and my personal favorite, the Tribbles'n'Bits breakfast cereal. It has to be the ultimate Geek breakfast. Unfortunately, under availability it shows that it is only available on Sherman's Planet.

Cell Phone Repeater
My dad lives in the shadow of a cell tower and gets no reception on his property, but does if he walks to the neighbors house (100 feet or so). I suggested he get a cell phone repeater. He now gets a bar or two, but not a good quality signal. This is the one he got (but not from Thinkgeek, I don't think). It should be noted, he also got a directional antenna that company sells to point at the nearest tower besides the one he lives under.

Re:No hardware keyboard...
That's the one I was thinking of. There are also cloth or silicone keyboards that fold up and a virtual keyboard

Oh, man... Look what I just found in one of the suggested products page:
Pull it out, and give it a twist, and a super-bright highly focused white spotlight shines into the darkest corners.

Re:I Don't Know What You're Talking About
That's sold out, $35 and possibly not available in Australia. However, after viewing that, it has occurred to me what has happened here. The submitter is used to (what I learned to call) RCA jacks in stereo. These I guess are two jacks looking like this. I believe what the submitter needs is only one of these adapters that will run you a few bucks at your local store (unless you're finicky about quality which I'm guessing he's not if he's doing this on that old of a computer).
Yes, the large RCA version of it is going the way of the buffalo and probably has for some time. Similar to the new video out ports looking smaller and smaller but being essentially the same standard. -
Re:I Don't Know What You're Talking About
SOLVED.
Now give me +5. Of course, there are many other ways to record a line-in, but it sounds to me like submitter is very finicky and used to doing things one specific way. I have family who use a dual-deck CD burner because they're used to the whole tape-deck way of recording. They would rather make a mix CD by sticking 1 CD at a time and burning track-by-track than simply ripping all of their music to their $800 laptop(which they use only for internet and OpenOffice) and burning mix CD's from the library. I'll get off your lawn now. -
Broken Windows
'Cutting public services is not only bad for the public who use services but also the economy as we are pushing people who provide valuable services on the dole,' says one union leader."
Yes, $DEITY forbid they should have to get productive jobs! Won't somebody please think of the glaziers, and go smash some windows to keep them employed?
As the T-shirt says: "Go away or I will replace you with a very small shell script." Isn't this why we invented computers in the first place?

Re:purpose built is not an all season tire
>For half that price, you're better off with Rovio [wowwee.com].
I bought one and was very displeased with it. The camera on it is of poor quality (requires a very well lit room) and the little white LED it uses as a headlamp is almost useless. I toughed it out for a while but the audio over the internet just would break more often than it would work. Annoyingly there's no "press here to speak" button, it just picked up sound from your mic at whatever threshold, so you were usually broadcasting and sending static when it did work. The amount of bandwidth used was pretty high for just audio. Oh, audio was IE only.
The battery life on it wasnt too great either. I loved watching it dock, though. I ended up returning it. Perhaps the Rovio II will be better especially if they opened it up so I could get root easily. Perhaps even a basic serial or usb port for use by tinkerers so we can mount devices its not designed to use. There's a need out there for a good little telepresence robot at around that price point that is expandable and hackable. The Rovio is just a toy. The Blackfin at half the price would be perfect.

Sounds like their jobs are easily automated. Tell them if they don't pay closer attention to error messages you'll inform their boss how to replace them with another computer program.

Re:Who wears a watch?
I wear this watch from Think Geek, because you always seem to forget your flash drive just when you need it most. It also means that I don't have to wear a "geek badge" flash drive lanyard while I'm at work.
Also, it's a great conversation-starter. No, I don't mean that I go around showing off my nerdy flash drive watch. If you are wearing a watch, inevitably you will be approached by people who have forgotten their time-telling device of choice. I've made a few good friends that way. -

Re:Depends on the output
Agreed. I think eventually, we will see phones/pocket-sized devices with a "pico" projector and one of these built in. And as storage gets smaller and chips get more powerful, we will end up with an all-in-one device that can replace laptops/netbooks as well. We already have convergence of phone, digital camera, video camera, PDA, MP3 player, GPS, etc... One of the things that makes the iPad attractive (YMMV) is the larger screen. A pico projector can provide that in a smaller device.

Perhaps its going straight into their proposed centralised database along with your other biometrics.
Crikey! with RFID passports that's actually within the realms of possibility now. I hadn't considered that. Now these things seem even more sinister.
Don't you already have your RFID Blocking Passport Billfold?

Re:This is an anti-robot weapon, not anti-car
Yes, but it's also a lot harder to get in a position in a bank to deploy software to crack their systems (never mind then laundering the money enough so that it's not traced back to you) than to sit on the side of the road with the car equivalent of a tv-b-gone.

Just wait until they find out there are actually watches with built in cameras that can even shoot videos: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/b550/ or even as a ball point pen : http://www.camerapen.org/ or as a keychain that looks like your car keys : http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/20090524/keychain-car-key-security-spy-camera/

Re:Not for a lot of us.
I'm using an Aspire One now (the 9" variety). The keyboard is cramped, and I wish they could have found a way to use all of the available space for a display, without a bezel almost an inch wide on three sides. The track pad is mediocre as well. But all that said, it's a GREAT thing to have around. When I need more muscle, I can generally get it. If I need more screen real estate, these are an option if a regular monitor is not available.
The nice part is that I can carry everything -- netbook, power brick, and mouse -- in a lunch cooler bag, and still have room for an umbrella, or a couple bottles of soda or beer, or even a LUNCH! Imagine that! I have played with the 11.6" Aspire One, and while I can certainly see the advantages if you use it a lot for "real work", my upgrade envy ended when I tried to slip the larger netbook under my coat to go to lunch. I felt like a freaking umpire wearing a chest protector.
For whatever reason, I find the smaller keyboard to be less of an issue in the Dvorak format. I wish they could find space for one-touch Home and End keys though, instead of requiring the Fn key for those.

Why are these guys just now trying this? The Wii has been around for a while, and we already seen the start of the next (and perhaps ultimate) control scheme: Direct brain control.

There is a reason why these are made...

ThinkGeek sells these uniforms, I kid you not.
Network Security Staff t-shirts.
(And honestly, if they want anything more than a t-shirt, you need to have a talk with them about the difference between "looking the part" and "getting the job done.")
-
Re:Tell it to the plastic clown
I would have to see the uniforms before passing judgment.
...I'd agree with that sentiment. After all, Del Taco employees get swanky t-shirts with almost suggestive phrases. Are they planning on buying the uniforms from Think Geek?
