Typical !Here I am installing FC5 as I speak, specifically to set up MythTv.
I have tried getting my tv cards working on a currently installed FC4 but had no real luck, and didn't fancy ruining a perfectly functioning media server just to experiment. The cards definitely work BTW (dvb_bt8xx Zarlink MT352). I have a spare HD so I tried installing a live cd version of PCLinuxOS which has been remastered to concentrate on MythTV. Unfortunately, the damn installer kept complaining that I needed to reboot to make the changes to fstab before I could format the drive. After every reboot the drive was still not set up, and the partitions had been rearranged. When run as a live cd the mythbackend can't write to the dbase because it's on a read only mount point ! So I gave up on that and decided to follow the instructions here. I went for FC5 because I already had it on dvd. But the initial yum update was 700 MB and so it's still running. I haven't got much further yet, so I may investigate this new distro.

BitTorrent FUD
Nearly all the content on the front page of one of the recommended BitTorrent sites, mininova, is warez.
Is it any wonder that there is FUD associated with distribution by BitTorrent? BTW, I love the protocol, and I realise that the protocol itself is amoral, and HTTP and FTP also have a capability for the dark side.
By all means use BT to distribute your product, but post it on a reputable site such as http://tlm-project.org/ -
Re:A Linux box and a cable modem
I second the notion to just host it yourself on a Linux box, and use BitTorrent to handle stuff. I was in the exact same situation as you once with my own distro, Ultima – and look where it got me. I've had over 8000 downloads now, all running off 384k uplink, a 700MHz Duron, and endless BitTorrent seeding
:-)
Couple tips if you're going to be creating a Linux distro:
Tell DistroWatch.com and get yourself famous. That's more or less how I got well-known. I'm not sure if they do the Windows-based distros, but it's worth a shot.
Know the good BitTorrent sites such as mininova, one of my own favorites, and The Linux Mirror Project. There's a ton of people on those sites who will download stuff just because it's there, and trust me, if you want instant fame that can be a very good thing.
If you need FTP, may I humbly suggest telling MadTux.org about your project. I myself heard of them when they e-mailed an offer to host my project for FTP download, and they're very, very friendly people. They do have a fee for downloaders, but to get your distro's ISO's or whatever hosted with them is free. (Tell them that I sent you, they'll know what to do ;-)
May be a few other things I've forgotten, but those are the big ones. Good luck! -

Re:Their Business Model
What's really funny is, I remember when illegal file sharing was accomplished via an FTP site. Before that it was Newsgroups(and in some cases still is). The media never jumped on those distribution methods and labeled them evil. How is BitTorrent any different? They all have legitimate and illegitimate reasons to use them. Hell, I just used BitTorrent to get the latest version of FreeBSD.

I can't find the pr0n :(
Just kidding. This is a good thing. I just hope they can combine efforts with The Linux Mirror Project. It'd be a shame for either to go to the wayside, especially when keeping as many seeders as possible is vital to any BT site.

The Linux Mirror Project
The Linux Mirror Project is a similar site that has been around for awhile.

Re:Why can't it automatically remove?Yeah. Because Gnutella offers downloads that scale well when new distros are released. It allows people who don't have complete copies of a high-demand file can contribute to the swarm. Searches are really fast, too, because you can immediately hop on the network and find most anything you need immediately. Also, it's network topology doesn't splinter users, in centralizes them based on what files they demand.
Oh wait...
Not to bash Gnutella, but there is a very good reason it is not used for large downloads that tend to get Slashdotted, like new Linux distro releases. Using Gnutella for downing Linux ISOs is a step backward. The Gnutella network is good for some things, but as Bit Torrent mutates into a decentralized network that can use an anonymous routing layer, Gnutella will fall off the map, I think.
Instead of talking about Gnutella, I'm surprised more posts haven't mentioned the other Linux tracker sites:

The Linux Mirrror Project deserves a mention too
Nice, but what about the BitTorrent Linux Mirror Project? They've been around for a while now. I think they at least deserve a mention, though they do kind of break the real advantage of BitTorrent, by re-hosting torrents. For low demand projects, this might actually make things worse.

There is also...

The Linux Mirror Project
http://www.tlm-project.org/ They have the latest Linux torrents, but also some more old ones. It also has a message board.

Trackerless BT is your friend
i have the largest collection of up to date linux iso's in my country. its a hobby as well as a job for me. so when The Linux Mirror Project tracker went down a few days ago, it took down the best way i had of downloading ISOs. so yeah, i would say tracker-less BT has a legitimate use, and it is an important one.

Gentoo Live CDNavyNOS is actually a pretty good Live CD based on Gentoo. I've not used it a great deal, but enough to tell you that the default WM is fluxbox with a sleek theme and background, and it comes with an installer script to make a Gentoo HD install alot quicker for those who are concerned about it.
GUI frontends for partition editing, portage (Porthole IIRC) and the Gentoo file browser are there by default on top of the usual suspects and a few extra net/security apps.
We have a torrent up for it here if anyone is interested:

Bye bye SuprNovaI saw earlier in SuprNova IRC that the topic stated:
Now talking in #suprnova.org
Topic is 'SuprNova is from today on DOWN. It will not be returning in any way that we know it now. We are very sorry for this, but it is not possible any other way. Thank you all for all your help! SuprNova crew '
* Set by sloncek on Sun Dec 19 16:08:10I knew it was serious as sloncek is the owner of SN and doesn't fool about with the topics much (unless its April 1st).
The thing that affects me most is that we at TLMP get a large portion of our traffic for Linux ISO torrents from SuprNova's listings.
Anyway, there are other sites, and much like when SR was taken down a couple of years ago, one of them will likely take the traffic and fill the void. Where there is demand, there is supply.
Anyone have any more information as to why this happened? Is it anything to do with the developement of Exeem? I can't see it being as simple as the MPAA taking legal action, as AFAIK they have little influence in Slovenia where it is hosted, and they have whethered alot of copyright group's actions fine until now....

Heh, yup, sweet. I'm seeing 115 seeders... jeepers.
If only that many folks were seeding on The Linux Mirror Project. -
Good news for Suse...
...and to help more people get a crack at running Suse, if you've got some spare bandwidth, fire up a BitTorrent client and head over to The Linux Mirror Project and help mirror the Suse torrent.
The tracker shows lots of leechers for that distro... if you can, hop in and help out! -

Fast Yoper Torrent and info on Reiser4
Fast Yoper Torrent from the Linux Mirror Project:
http://www.tlm-project.org/torrents/yoper/yos-i686 -2.1.0-4.iso.torrentAnd on installing use the default Reiserfs(3). Don't use the new Reiser4, it's much slower, there's messages on Yoper.com forum. There is also some info about slow Reiser4 on Lwn:

Loads of uses on legal P2P
Check out The Linux Mirror Project for example. Which has torrents for Slackware, Slax, Fedora, Mandrake, Knoppix, Debian, Gentoo & FreeBSD
-
Linux Gaming DistroOn a more constructive note, since UT2003/4, Quake3, Doom3, and a handfull of other badass games are supported by Linux why isnt there a Linux-Gamers distro. Even if it were just a bootable knoppix CD that could take advantage of the Athlon 64 and play these games off your harddrive it would really help get linux on the desktop in the gamers croud.
Someone is already working on that, its called Linux Live Game Project, a live CD that is orientated around gaming, the home page is at http://tuxgamers.altervista.org.
A site I run with a friend currently mirror their distro over BitTorrent, check it out at The Linux Mirror Project

Re:Nooooo

Re:Get your Torrents here!
Grrr!!! My post screwed up. Ignore the original and try this:

Torrents
When I last checked there weren't links to the torrents on the announcement and now I can't get to the site and see if they've changed that. So just to be sure here's the link.
-
YES: Bittorrent
I found this BitTorrent-Mirror that seems to have it. (I can't try it at the moment)
-
Other Examples
For once, we have a concrete example to point to when citing the merits of P2P.
Let me offer a few others that have been around for a while:
- Distributing FLOSS. For example, Linux.
- Distributing music with the copyright holder's permission. For example, eTree.
- Distributing internally developed software to employees in a large enterprise. For example, LANDesk and Marimba use peer to peer distribution. -
I download my software on P2P all the time
