Re:Worthless.
Why not ask him the questions like;
1. What was there before the big bang and where did it come from? That question is answered here.
2. If live evolved then why do we want to talk to him because he is nothing more than a temporary electrical charged mineral deposit and soon will be less than that in death. Oops, there is no such thing as death for true big bang believers.
Lay off the drugs, it's starting to get obvious.

I'm calling the Canadian authorities on you since that song has been ruled offensive!! How dare you post those offensive lyrics!

Not *that* bad..
Come on... Sure they shit canned two bs sequels (admittedly of shows I didn't give a pint of rat's milk for), but what about Warehouse 13 or Eureka? Lattimre and Micca were a great funny couple. That and Eureka's little super arching plot was pretty stellar. Two quality shows. Sanctuary is starting to get my attention this last season as well!
Accordingly to TV guide:
Syfy has acquired all 31 episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which will debut on Thursday, April 7, the network announced Tuesday.
http://www.tvguide.com/News/Syfy-Terminator-Stargate-1029750.aspxGreat.. I didn't care for that show much on fox, but if it's floating around I'll watch. Hell I'll watch more 'Face/Off' (*sigh* sans Nick Cage and Johnny T) if it means less wrestling. Truthfully I finally got most of the episodes for 'Enterprise' watched (thanks Syfy!) and I really did enjoy the show. It didn't piss me off like Voyager so that was a high five.
My question is where's my reshowing of Babylon 5 or Deep Space Nine?

Re:I have a feeling
It's time to check to see what channels are available, then deal with your antenna.
http://www.antennasdirect.com/hdtv_antenna_selector.html
A good place to learn about antennas.TV Guide - http://www.tvguide.com/listings/default.aspx
Pretty much your just not set up to pick up all channels, and this can be remedied by you. Don't start off again making it sound like stations have been lost somehow by the transition to digital television.
Your channels come from Harrisburg, and Lebanon along with Lancaster when it comes to digital tv. (just so you know)Also, include decimal versions of the channels in the equation since most of the channels out on digital tv separate a single channel into 2-4 different subsections of data. (PBS over here has 4 different sections under channel 8... 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, and 8.4)
Of course, this is also coming from someone who has a signature that tries to make broadband sound like a totally overblown thing...

TV Guide's list of TV shows status...
"Dark Horizons shares a TV Guide blog that shows a chart/schedule since the end to the three-month-old Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike is imminent. The networks have quietly begun outlining plans to salvage what's left of the current television (TV) season. Keep in mind that the following information remains extremely tentative and is subject to change (and probably will). Check the Web page often to see the up-to-date information." From my site.

Re:Just extrapolate
Joking aside, Fox has already put more into this than one might expect from them.
According to an interview with Michael Ausiello, Whedon originally said he was interested in writing just a pilot and Fox went ahead and bought seven episodes. Also, the network side of things (as far as personnel go) is significantly different from when Firefly got canceled. -
Re:How to get the TV listings the Linux way
Actually, the first thing I thought of was to just write a script to parse the data from any of a million web listings services like http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tvlistings or http://www.tvguide.com/Listings or any of the others...I think it's so easy that even _I_ could do it.
-
Easy.

Edit it for your location. It's not embedded into MythTV?
So what. It gives you what you need. -
Re:Just about every job today uses a computer.

TVGuide.com does the same thing...They do the same thing HERE
I have had a hard time figuring out why anyone buys the TV Guide for the last few years since they post the listings for free on their site.

Re:Well I won't be listening...You obviously arn't listening to any good ones! NPR has some great ones, such as Wait, wait, don't tell me! (funny as hell) and NPR:Books, which is great if you're interested in books an literature. Slate's daily podcast is also very, very interesting. As for gaming, Gamespot's The Hotspot is great. TV Guide hosts TVGuide Talk a great podcast on television. If you're a super-nerd The Word Nerds are alot of fun. That's just naming a few of my favourites.
The greatest one of all however is Filmspotting (formerly Cinecast), a movie podcast which frankly is the best reviewers in all of media. A normal review contains what, 3-4 minutes of discussion, maybe 6-7 if it's an article. The Filmspotting guys routinely talk for seventeen (17!) minutes about a movie, incredibly smart and intellectual discussion that really dives deep into actors, scripts, direction, theme, etc. of every movie it reviews. That is what makes podcasting great, by not being contrained by a corporation, people are free to create their own formats, and have complete creative control. Most often that means it's gonna suck, but when it doesn't you get something like Filmspotting which is frankly unparalelled in quality.

Re:Who is flying them?
Surprisingly few of our Defense Contractors' engineers are actually qualified pilots. That's why our DC ANG F-16 pilots complain that the F-16 is an airplane "designed by engineers, not pilots." That's why Lockheed had to pay so much money to the wives of German fighter pilots after the F-104 fighter failed so miserably as to break up under stress. (Our own government didn't do anything extra for the US F-104 widows.)
The Boeing B-1 Lancer was a good plane when they designed it, but the engineers then overloaded with so much gear that they either stall on climb or go into an unrecoverable dive. Naturally, the Reagan DoD claimed we needed the B-1 to win the Cold War. I guess that's why they're still flying B-52s.
Pointing to a DoD press release doesn't help your case, and neither do ad-hominem attacks, (to which I shall never stoop). This is the same DoD that claimed we had a missile gap in 1960, that East Germany had a higher standard of living than West Germany in the 1980s, and that we're winning the war in Iraq. The first version of the M-1 tank couldn't even shoot and move at the same time. The Bradley Fighting Vehicle? Another triumph of military engineering so great they had to make a movie about it.
The Moab desert robot drive challenge was successfully completed only last year. AI isn't as advanced as you might think. UAVs certainly do NOT have to follow all the rules of passenger aircraft under Parts 61, 91, 141 or 142 of FAA regulations. When UAVs fly, the FAA issues a NOTAM and restricts the airspace around it so no airplanes with humans on board fly anywhere near them. A surprisingly large amount of U.S. airspace is restricted, including most of the airspace over Nevada, for instance. Thus, the military and defense contractors get whatever exemptions they want from civil airspace rules. Don't believe me? Fly over Area 51 and see what happens.
The FAA controllers regularly complain about military bozos who want to restrict all US airspace to military traffic only. After 9/11, the Pentagon almost seized Washington's Reagan National airport and were stopped only when members of Congress figured out how long it would take them to drive to other airports.
Those of you who are ready to fly in airliners piloted by AI should:
1) take a class in AI
2) get a pilot's license, or at least take a flight lesson.
I have done both (not at MIT, though), and those designing these aircraft, for the most part, have not.
The main point of this is, don't believe everything you read in a press release. -
Re:Interface to metadata?
Her ya go!
But if you wanted to do all that you claimed to do, would you really devote the resources to supplying relevant metadata to your files? -
Didn't Dr. Dana Andrews do this back in '65?

Duchovny jumped the gun....From TV Guide:
Question: I was excited to read that a second X-Files movie is finally being made. Do you have any more info on the plot -- other than that it will be a stand-alone horror flick? -- Jack K.
Ausiello: Actually, it looks like David Duchovny was getting a little ahead of himself when he told USA Today last week that the film was slated to begin production later this year. "There's nothing at the moment going on," Chris Carter's agent, Elliott Webb, says. "There is no negotiation, there's no script written, there's nothing other than a desire for people to get together." Bummer. -
Re:A moment of silence...For our fallen nerd hero.
I have to admit, I thought the way Ken went down was a bit weak. However, at least his question wasn't "Who are three people that have never been in my kitchen?"

Re:Schedules
"will some free service offer updated schedules so the devices know what's on"
TVGuide.com offers free listings. Seems like a script to parse that web page and put it into something the PVR can use wouldn't be rocket science. Of course, there is the aspect that TVGuide.com requires a registration, but that could be worked out fairly easily. -
TV Guide's website
TV Guide has reasonably good episode guides for most shows, all in one place. Check out:
http://www.tvguide.com/tv/showguide/
When you click on a show, there are links in the left sidebar to each season, which then contains summaries of every episode. -
FWIW, for So Cal Slashdot readers...Joss Whedon and several members of the cast and crew are scheduled to appear at the LA Comic Book and Sci-Fi Convention (yeah, the convention will be full of geeky fans, but check the list of past convention guests and you have to admit that it's pretty damn impressive, and the admission price of $7.50 can't be beat either) this coming Sunday to promote the DVD, and Fox will have them there for sale for $25.00:
Joining JOSS on stage at 1:00 P.M. will be TIM MINEAR (Writer), BEN EDLUND (Writer-also creator of THE TICK Comic Book), Stars NATHON FILLION (CAPTAIN MALCOLM "MAL" REYNOLDS), GINA TORRES (ZOE), ADAM BALDWIN (JAYNE), RON GLASS (BOOK "THE SHEPHERD"), and MORENA BACCARIN (INARA). Fox Home Entertainment will have GREAT PRICES on DVD's at their table at the Convention! Fox will have the FIREFLY COMPLETE SERIES DVD COLLECTION on sale for just $24.99. They will also have BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Season One-Five for $34.99. ANGEL Volume One and Two will be on sale for $34.99. X-2: X-MEN UNITED will be on sale for $14.99, and X-FILES DVD's will also be on sale.
It'll be interesting to hear his thoughts on the TV series, on FOX network execs, the DVDs, and the upcoming movie project (which contrary to recent reports, has a very long way to go). Plus if you go, you'll have a chance to rib Joss on singing the theme song. :) -
There IS a Science Channel (not DC or TLC)
I never really thought I was one of the privileged few, but in reading the myriad of (very much correct) comments complaining about the detritus that passes as science on the Discovery Channel or The Learning Channel it occurs to me that most people don't get the Science Channel that I get on my handy-dandy digital cable.
Though it can be a bit repetitive after a few months (there seems to be alot less science programming available than there are reruns of Friends in the world - go figure), there is some truly facinating SCIENCE presented.
Here is a brief listing from tonight, a la tvguide.com (FYI - I live in United States ZIP code 11706, and use Hauppague Cable, if you want to lokk for yourself - it's channel 170)
- Understanding - The human brain is examined. Included: how the brain develops, functions of brain anatomy, how cerebral chemicals affect thought, brain surgery to control seizures. Also: 3-D imaging charts the brain in action.
- Paleoworld - Theories about dinosaurs raising their young.
- Connections - "The Big Spin" - Segments include Helen of Troy; police blotters; insurance statistics; soda; oil; micro-fossils; and earthquake detection. James Burke hosts.
- Lives of Stars - Deep-space astronomical phenomena include red giants, white dwarfs and black holes.
Note, that this is a listing from just today. Personally, I leave this channel on almost constantly when I'm home.
Contact your cable provider, and request the Science Channel!

Not a first -- 8 years late
"Knowing and sometimes sweetly funny, director/co-writer Daisy von Scherler Mayer's [1995] debut ['Party Girl', starring Parker Posey,] made online history by being the first feature film to be sneak-previewed in its entirety (albeit in short, jerky segments) on the Internet."

Re:Will it warn us that Will and Grace are about .
If it could warn us when NBC is about to put on one of its cheesy shows it would be worth it.
Agreed. If only there were some kind of publication available at newsstands that could give out this kind of information. *cough*cough*. :) -
Re:Subscription theft or alternative service?
Just wondering
... what digital tv guides are out there as alternatives?
Well, TV Guide has one and, IIRC, there was a script or something already out there to extract the info from their page and dump it into your TiVO.
It has been a while since I researched any of this, so I am sure I have missed plenty of info in this recollection. I suggest Googling for info freshness :-) -
Re:New world record?
The guinness records site has the following:
Most Retakes For One Scene
A sequence in Charlie Chaplin's City Lights (US 1931) took 342 takes to make. In the scene, a blind flower girl (played by Virginia Cherrill) sells a tramp a flower in the mistaken belief he is a wealthy tycoon.
WHO: City Lights (1931)
WHEN: 1931
WHERE: USA
WHAT: 342 takes
Jackie Chan's 1982 film is listed as 2900 on HK Flix and as 'hundreds' on TVGuide.com
This information was not available on this thread when I posted, so look at the bloody times before moderating -1 Redundant -
I'm in!...this site tells us all how to "hack" into the weather satellites and get back usable pictures using our PCs and an AM antenna.
Cool. This site tells us all how to "hack" into the TV stations and get back usable video using our televisions and a broad-band antenna.

Are TVguide.com descriptions broken in Mozilla?
I have been using Mozilla since 0.92 as my primary browser and email client. I'm surprised at the new features added - like about:config - I mean, who knew!?! This is cool!
However, I still have a problem with a few sites, like tvguide.com. When on the listings page, I click the program name and get a blank pop-up window where the description should be. I've tried turning off popup-blocking and disabling all script control options (leaving the boxes checked). Does anyone else see this problem? More importantly, does anyone have a solution. -
Re:DIE BUFFY DIE!Just the whole premise of the show is a turn-off for me.
Seems to me it's this same mentality of dismissing the show based on it's premise that keeps Buffy from Getting an emmy.
Try watching a couple episodes.

Re:Oh, goody! So tell me...
"Great! Let me know where I can go to a website and see every Steve Martin movie that is coming up in the next two weeks, with specific channel numbers, dates, and times."
http://www.tvGuide.com
"And which website was it where I could go and click on MOVIES, and then type in "Steve Martin", and have it record all of those movies automatically?"
http://www.snapsteram.com
"That is why I pay TiVo $4.95 a month."
I'd give you a more detailed answer if you weren't being so overly-sensitive about a legitimate complaint. Last thing I need is for some jackass to get all heated at me because they think I'm attacking their precious TiVo. -
Re:speaking of covers
This weeks TV Guide has 4 different covers for this Star Trek movie - it's one of those plastic sheets where the picture changes as you move it around. (what do you call those anyway?)
-
Re:Open PVR just needs an open schedule...I guess it would be too easy (and probably a copyright violation) to just scrape the info off of TV Guide and publish it in some kind of XML format?
OTOH, maybe an application bundled with the PVR could do the searching, for personal use, customized for one's own location, rather than essentially recreating the entire TV Guide database.

The masked man
Perhaps Tom Cruise would like a face transplant... He has worn a mask in four recent movies -- Mission Impossible, Minority Report, Eyes Wide Shut, and Vanilla Sky. Something out of the ordinary is afoot...
Seriously though, I think this will be a great breakthrough for people with facial scarring that is not reparable by conventional means. -
Re:Enterprise politically correct?
A bit off topic here, but it looks like Firefly isn't doing too great either. Fox will probably drop it unles the ratings go up.
-
Only on SlashdotOnly on Slashdot would they hype up a great-sounding new series premier and NOT TELL YOU WHEN AND WHERE YOU CAN SEE IT!!!
Ahem.
It's on FOX at 8:00 PM EST, 7:00 Central. Or check your local listings.

Realtime revolution.
I'm a regular of the #farscape channel on irc.scifi.com, and it has been incredible. Here's a java chat link for the lazy. Random stars and makers of the show have been showing up there at least once a day, sometimes several visits throughout the day, to give encouragement to the fans. The channel grew to consistently hold hundreds of users, maxing out at 700 at a time. Here's a quick rundown of some of the news converage that we've gotten:
E! Online
TV Guide (again)
CNN
Wired
BBC
Its turning out to be a story not just about a bunch of SciFi geeks crying about a lost show, but a protest against corporations directing culture through actions they don't have to justify. I mean, they killed their #2 show after having already made the commitment to the year. I don't consider myself the protesting type, especially over a TV show... but I wrote a letter, linked to it from my site and sent a few emails because I think the people who make and watch the show aren't out of line to demand what was promised to them.

Re:The most fundemental flaw...
Yeah, I'm in favor of having unelected political hacks and the Supreme Court decide who our elected officials should be like last time. After all, voting only takes valuable time away from the important things in life.

Re:Here's what I want
I think the hardware and software side of what you are suggesting are pretty trivial. In fact, I've seriously considered putting together such a device myself.
However, how would you get up to date program listings — or deal with last minute programming changes? Sure, you could screen scrape services such as TV Guide or GIST TV (superior to TV Guide anyway IMHO) but these are for profit entities and I doubt they would take kindly to 10's of thousands of geeks eating up bandwidth as their open source/GPL'd PVR's hit their web sites every hour or so.
If anyone out there knows how to get access to the TV programming listings without paying a service such as many newspapers do (often for inaccurate information) I would really love to hear how in e-mail.

Dynamic Flash (Re:Flash is next but...)
What about dynamic flash content?
why do people keep saying this? FLASH DOES ALLOW YOU TO HAVE DYNAMIC CONTENT!
you can put sql queries right into your flash code. you wanna connect to an oracle db, do your queries or update data and then output things so they look pretty? no problem. you want to use flash with php and mysql to make your sites dynamic? no problem
if you have a quick connection to the web (the site is a bit bloaty... we are talking about flash) go here and click on "tv times". play around with that. then check out how the same thing looks in html.
both are dynamic... -
Re:Lump It
Sure, you can build a custom PVR system, but where are you going to get the data from to run it?
how about tvguide.com. It's not hard to stir up some perl and wget to get all the showtimes. I did something similar to automatically download pr0n.
