Re:Do-gooder
Speaking of "do-gooders", at least that moron Jack Thompson isn't mentioned in the article. That guy is so full of shit that he doesn't even care if anyone really takes him seriously as long as the morons in the media pay attention to him.
Interestingly enough, the most recent VG Cats deals with this topic, as does a recent Penny Arcade. It's nice to see a funny spin on this continuing GTA and "videogames kill!" bullshit. -

Its the companies that change the style that kill
I have seen a number of original anime series and then have seen them licensed and brought over to the western world only to sit and wonder if its the same show I'm watching. A large percentage is translated poorly and the voice acting is so bland its just not worth watching, either that or the shows are cut to shreds either due to its graphic nature or adult themes.
I'm not completely against dubs and there are indeed a few companies that have done a rather good job of "porting" anime into english (Hellsing from Pioneer).
I just believe that if companies want to get my hard earned cash out of my pocket to get their DVD or pay for access to a subscription channel then _please_ keep the show in its enirety and save what makes that show work. Don't Rip its guts out.
The comic strip from VG cats sums it up perfectly IMHO

Re:The "arbitrary barriers" are what annoy me...
It's really simple. Just ask yourself - if this were a MOVIE, would I believe in this event? (Paul Anderson and Uwe Boll movies excepted) Would I believe that the characters need to spend three months item-gathering? Would I believe it's necessary for the heroes to take a break from the plot to crossbreed giant chickens?
Wait wait... I believe you're referring to Chocobo breeding when you say 'crossbreed giant chickens'. If so, come now, that was one of the cooler parts of FF7. Role Playing games allow you to do stuff like breed chocobos on the side simply because they're role playing. Maybe your quest does involve needing a giant chicken... who's to say?
Games designed as movies are nice for the crucial moments or action games, but as gamers we tend to want content... lots of content. Especially in our RPGS. I love games like Morrowind that let me play however I feel like, and can stand up to 3 months of item gathering.
I, for one, welcome our inbred giant chicken overlords. -

Re:Sad to say, but Sega's completely lost it
VG Cats did a great strip about this recently.
Worth the read, if for no other reason than to watch Sonic cry.
And because they're sort of relevant and funny, their strip about Black and White, Metroid, and Zelda. -

I'm a gamer, so not only have I been witness to the...
Windows vs. Linux
GTK vs. QT
Gnome vs. KDE
Python vs. Ruby
Ruby vs. Java
PHP vs. Java
Emacs vs. vi ...flame-wars, but I've also been a party to countless gaming flame-wars. And in the end they all devolve and become pointless. Granted the stakes are higher when you're talking about Ruby vs. Java or GTK vs. QT. You're talking about making decisions that impact a project and perhaps a company for years or decades to come. But in the end all I ask is for both sides (if they must engage in debate) to first actually debate and secondly to do so from a neutral, open-minded and informed point of view. -

Re:What?
You don't know many, eh?
Some of them make the fact that they're gaming comic websites a bit more known, sure. But all those sites I go to primarily for the comics. All of them don't have the full comic on the front page.
Now, clanbob (specifically the life of riley) comic ISN'T the entire focus of the site. it's just a bunch of friends, one of them happens to draw a comic. The others use it for whatever they want, as far as I can tell. But penny-arcade has a link to the comic in each of tycho's posts about it, and a 'Latest Comic' link right at the top. It's fair to include all of these as being similar, I think. -

Re:Only One Good CSI
You mean like in this comic, eh?
On a serious note, I hated what little I saw of the original CSI because the characters were too typical of Bruckheimer - so much posturing and bad acting, like a football team with microscopes. That, and the fact that so much of actual investigations are simplified for the sake of (poor) plot and character development, turned me off the show. I doubt most investigations are as short as is depicted on the show, where they solve a case in a few days.
It could be that my standards were too high going into it, though. I'd seen a lot better forensic investigation shows on other channels like Discovery and TLC.
If you want a really good forensics show, go watch The New Detectives or The FBI Files on Discovery channel. They're documentary-type shows where they reenact actual investigations, so they're quite accurate. They focus totally on the investigation, with none of the annoying posturing like the CSI guys because they have a new cast for each episode. Plus, they don't pretend that it all happens in a day and the forensics guys do everything, they depict the team effort and time required to actually build up a case that can stand up in court. If you have time, check it out - I thik they're on saturdays and tuesdays. -
Pantsman on CSI.

Frankly, I tend to agree.

CSI versus reality
I actually think CSI is relatively good compared to most of the stuff on television, but I do think VGCats' commentary has a bit of a point...
