A couple documentaries!
VideoSift shared an over 1.5 hours YouTube video showing "Building Star Trek (Full Episode)" -- "When 'Star Trek' first aired, it expanded the viewers' imaginations about what was possible. A three years old 47 minutes YouTube video showing "The Real Story: Star Trek (Full Episode)" -- "Meet Star Trek's producers, the first Trekkies, and Mr. Spock himself to discover the true story of Star Trek's history and how its vision of the future has influenced today's technology..."
Star Trek is 50 years old! "Live long and prosper."

:-)I start wondering (every 4 years when people talk about getting rid of the electoral college) if we still teach United States History in high school. Sure let's reform it, take the rubber stamp "electors" out of the process - but you still have the fundamental "big states vs small states" issue (the reason we have a bicameral legislature) and not to mention some other big problems
Nate Silver deserves all of the plaudits he is receiving, I have nothing bad to say about Mr. Silver. I'm going to hunt up a copy of his book. #prepareToDuckAndRun do you know the difference between Nate Silver and God? Nate Silver wouldn't get booed at the Democratic convention #duckAndRun

Re:Hopeless...
Right, but I'm not sure enough people understand: Tax benefit or no, the money still goes away. It's NOT about tax write-offs (I am a financial advisor and getting my CFP). It's more about Return On Investment.
Contributing money to charity doesn't get you any monetary benefit. You still don't get to keep that money.
With our marginal tax rate system, tax deductions don't magically change how much all one's money is taxed, it only moves that money out of a tax rate "bucket" so it isn't taxed at a certain rate. But the money is still gone, and if it is better spent elsewhere then it should be spent elsewhere.
Point if it's to verbose: Donations don't save money, so only donate if it gets you something (like good will, good feeling, or in this case a 22000% rate of return, http://videosift.com/video/TYT-22-000-rate-of-return-on-lobbying-investment?loadcomm=1)

who is deciding what is 'needed' here exactly?
The markets have decided that iPhones and iPads sell really well, that's all there is to it. Whether there is a "need" for companies similar to Apple - it's up to the markets to decide.
However with every more the governments make sure that there will be no small competition to the large established businesses in any industry. Be it the food and drug industries, be it telcos or utilities (water/gas/sewer/roads/transportation/energy), be it entertainment, be it military, be it MS or Oracle or Apple or Google whatever.
The government implicitly that it wants only the large companies, that's why the interest rates for borrowing are pushed down, so no small business can get those loans and the credit is only available to the ever growing and ever and all consuming government.
The patent and copyright laws, the licensing by all these departments like SEC, FINRA, FDA, FCC, whatever. Everything is done so that there will be no competition.
Try and start your own investment business today, go ahead. Start it from scratch. If you are not already wealthy (like a millionaire), you won't even move past the first hurdles of licensing across all states and you CANNOT ADVERTISE your success, it's illegal in the investment business, it's a direct help to the established businesses.
Don't forget the added costs of things like the Patriot act, where you must be an unpaid spy for the IRS and CIA and FBI, spying on your own clients.
Try and start your own store chain. Try and cut through all the red tape of all the licensing and all the labor regulations. Good luck.
Sure, you can start a software company, your own 'Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net' from your house. Try and sell some of your software though, it's a tossup. You are probably going to be attacked by armies of lawyers based on anything, from patents to copyrights, it doesn't have to be true, but if you become successful enough, they'll "buy you out".

That doesn't really work, does it?
I'm sure I'm ready to listen to a yellow jacket on the subject of troll diminishment. This house is a yellow jacket free zone.
Sometimes trolls inspire useful thinking, if you haven't heard it a dozen times already. You can learn a lot about Platonic solids from the contemplation of square pegs and round holes.
I tend to respond with a humorous paragraph-long extrapolation of troll's cognitive bias (ignoring the person behind the idea promulgated), followed immediately with several paragraphs making a useful on-topic contribution, or an extended riff on lateral associations.
Perhaps I copied my formula from Mozart during his appreciation of Salieri's gift composition.
On the other hand, There's nothing wrong with an old-fashioned traditional shunnin'.

article didn't define "entity"
An octopus has tentacles; does it have a soul? Perhaps "An entity has a soul if it is intelligent enough, and of course if we can see that it is intelligent enough, it must therefore have a soul." Circular logic. Not to mention, such a definition would exclude unborn humans from having souls, and therefore abortion shouldn't be the issue that religions like Catholicism makes of it.
The most interesting thing about the idea that a soul starts to exist at conception is the logical conclusion that this can only be true if God personally makes one. That's because the process of egg-fertilization is purely a physical/biochemical reaction; anything that can be created by purely physical means can also be destroyed by purely physical means. So, if a soul is to exist immortally, then it cannot begin to exist as a result of a purely physical event such as egg-fertilization; an Act of God would be required, for the NON-physical soul to begin to exist.
Now, God is not an idiot. Will God create a soul for a fertilized egg that contains badly defective DNA and will never grow to term? Is God vindictive instead of Loving, that God will create a soul for a fetus that God knows (because knows everything) will be aborted, JUST so that the woman can then be condemned? And what of twins? Twins do not begin to exist until the fertilized egg "hatches" enough for a blastocyst to emerge; if the blastocyst breaks into two organisms while emerging, then twins (sometimes breaks into three, yielding triplets) are the result. WHEN does God create those extra souls??? Religion claims that souls begin to exist at egg-fertilization; Religions are stupidly ignorant about the actual facts. Then there are organisms called "chimeras", in which two separately-fertilized eggs sometimes merge and the result is just one human body. See the Discovery Health Channel show, "I am my own twin" for more information. Why would God create two souls at fertilization if God knows that a chimera will form? -
See how History Channel went downhill!

Re:Use hydrogen.
I stand corrected. Impressive list of tech in the first link; the second one sounds like a Pinto waiting to happen. If solid state storage could be made to release sufficient hydrogen on demand, I'd feel much better about driving around with an H2 car. Driving with a bomb in the backseat seems unsafe.

Re:No matter
The "Making Ofs" for Tron and Star Trek: The Motion Picture, regardless of your opinions on the movies themselves, are actually interesting because they faced challenges that normal people could understand and met them with answers normal people can understand.
Ok, as an avid trek fan, and a person whos first dual monitor wallpaper was trons bit in both yes (left) and no (right) forms, I felt ashamed at not knowing such making of videos existed.
This prompted me to find these, and I wanted to share with the others

Re:Missing option. . .
> You, of course. would never sell your company for any amount of money.
When I did run a small business I was made offers for them. But I never sold them. So yes in answer to your question I would never sell my company for any amount of money. If I do, then I lose creative control of it, and it won't be managed or work the same way as it worked when I owned it.
>The shareholders would have to be willing to sell at a price Microsoft was willing to pay. My guess is that an offer was made and refused.
If the offered price was under $290M I can see why, they already got $290M in the lawsuit settlement if Microsoft does not change their code to avoid the patent infringement. But if Microsoft offers them $5 Billion, what then? Would Microsoft have that sort of money to buy them out? Will they buy them out this way?

Actually, I just wanted a demonstration on power through the air that was totally safe. (not the Sony method)

Was a demo by TED talk.
They actually demo it with a TV, and cell phone application. Uses high frequency vibrations to generate electricity with magnetic waves.
