Star Destroyer Built Before Your Eyes
hardcoredreamer writes "These people spent 10 hours constructing their very own Imperial II-class Star Destroyer from LEGO and capturing over 7000 frames of the process with their webcam. The images were encoded with divx5 and are available to download in a 4 minute .avi. mirror 1 , mirror 2 , mirror 3."
Very nice
I love how the damned link was /.-ed before there were even any comments.
All said, it sounds like a pretty cool endeavor-- even though I can't see it. :)
i swear i saw the guy eat a piece. in frame 3857.
They had to know half the planet would tune in yet not even a single one withstood the onslaught for more than about 12 seconds. Great planning guys.
This would have been far more interesting if:
.. now that would be cool AND you could float it on a pond.
A) it had not come as a kit with all the parts in neat little bags
B) They had not kept looking at the instructions.
Putting together legos using the manuals really doesn't take that much does it? Now a to scale ISD out of 3m expanding foam carved with a hot wire and plumbed with LEDs
Bad Panda! No Bamboo for you! In matters of importance ACs will not be responded to. Want to say something critical,OK

These guys like their ice cream a little too much, they got down a whole entire bowl in 1 second flat.
They should specify the type of destroyer, because there are many types; a Star Destroyer is any of a broad type of fictional starship from the Star Wars universe. These ships are ubiquituous warships following a dagger aesthetic and usually serving in the Imperial Starfleet of the Galactic Empire. BTW In the original treatments of the scripts that would become Star Wars, the term "Stardestroyer" (as a compound word) was used for the two-man fighters flown by what would become the Galactic Empire in the final movie, if my memory is correct.
These people spent 10 hours constructing their very own Imperial II-class Star Destroyer from LEGO...and we spent 10 seconds taking down any server brave enough to offer movies of it.
Considering how cool the dark side is recently - I'd have thought someone would've built the death star too - with a Nuetrino torpedos here in neon ?.
Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur
I thought this one was a little more interesting. http://www.adognamedfish.com/archives/2003/01/lego _star_destroyer/
Slashdotters: You are all a bunch of faggots.
Do you hear me, you repulsive faggots? NO DIGG.
Yay /.
It looks really fun, however, it's from 2003. We're a little late, guys. There is a girl, though. I'm going to go watch it again.
I watched the video.
I couldn't help thinking that that was what I'd have been like if it wasn't for my girlfriend's constant vigilance...
I kept on looking for someone holding a gun to their heads but I don't think there were any.
Blearf. Blearf, I say.
omg i'm wearing that same AYBABTU shirt at the moment o_O
best part was when they ate, i felt like i was playing the Sims or something O_o
Indeed, why read about deep impact or watch the cool pics http://www.spaceflightnow.com/deepimpact/050704fir stcloseups.html>, when you can look at nerds building a lego-starship off the shelf?
you editors suck!
Mirror of the "huge" movie
I watched the video, found it very amazing and interesting, and at the end was incredibly impressed.
Then, I watched it again, and this time I actually watched them build the ISD, rather than simply stare at the breasts on the RHS of the screen.

Give it a go. For as little as 360 euro's you can try to beat the 10 hours! (if you have no friend(s) - the time to beat is 20 hours)
I once assembled some flat pack furniture in less than three days.

Am I the only geek here who are not interested in all the star wars stuff in ./ ?
This place is becoming a marketing heaven for Lucas.

Why does Lego create an unwelcome climate for those of us who are striving to honor our nation's glorious mosaic of cultures and ethnicities? Anger? Fear? Stupidity? Some deep vulgar urging of its soul? The answer cannot easily be found, but an increasing number of people abhor its gormless projects and are looking for alternatives
This story should be from the "Its been on every other site now Zonk must post it" department.
Or

Slashdot is slipping.
I saw a similar recording from a sweatshop in china.
:)
The video looks exactly like when chinese people assemble it, but they don't speed up the footage
...that red-headed geek at the top better lay off the ice cream. He's developing man-boobs.
ok.. so lego has a kit to make a star destroyer... yawn
if they had made it out of generic bricks it *MIGHT* be interesting, but in the mean time.... i want my 5 minutes back... and i'm sure they want here 11 hours back.
Don't call me back. Give me a call back. Bye. So yeah. But bye our, well, but alright we are on a shirt this chill.
I'll slashdot your mom
...and no Deathstar, either.
sorry..
I once built "Airwolf" out of standard Lego bricks. That was nice. Until my cat tried its "landing capabilities", off the bookshelf... oh, well..
Crivens! I kicked meself in me own heid!
and the Deep Impact coverage doesnt? Slashdot once again moves down a peg. ... and why is two people following instructions news in the first place, even if there wasn't a far more noteworthy geek event taking place? Come on mods.

news for nerds.
"news" - raaaiiight...
stuff that matter...my ass!
look at the date on the top of the article: Tuesday, 14 January 2003 !!
...the only known 4 minute stop motion video of life long virgins known to man!
Yes, I realise the hypocrisy, this is "News for Nerds". But seriously, "Hey baby, check out this 4 minute video of me and my friends building a giant Imperial Star Destroyer from Legos! Yeah, its perfectly to scale! We set up this webcam to take a picture every 5 minutes and...."
The "girl" has left the room, she is never coming back, all hope is lost.
I'm a nerd, but not this kind of nerd. This is a nerd of higher caliber.

If you've grabbed the movie from the mirrors, fire up bittorrent anyway, help out!
I scrutinized the movie, it is quite clearly a hoax, at several points stand-ins were used.
Notice how the guy in the black T-shirt, who conveniently is facing away from the camera most of the time, switches from right-handed to left-handed and back again several times !
I'll not list the other inconsistencies, it's too obvious !
I wonder who is behind this...

Any sufficiently advanced form of incompetence is indistinguishable from malice
who cares! they built it based on instructions from a kit and filmed it. it could have been moderately interesting had it been their own design. as it is, not worth a post on slashdot by any stretch.
Come on, what is happening with /. who the hell is interested in watching a couple of guys building their lego-destroyer??
WTF? with all that's going on right know in the world it should be something good to post instead of this... this...
I think the bigger news is that he convinced a woman to join him in this endeavour or maybe that he was able to concentrate on building a plastic replica toy after she agreed
Did anyone notice that shoe in that single frame?
What a blatant waste of time and resources. Now, if someone could devote that type of enthusiasm to balancing the US deficit, homelessness, world hunger and peace.. we'd be living among great people.
It took me more than 10 hours to build, and i didn't video it, but guys, you can buy these in damn near every LEGO store in the UK.... and probably the US too..... the Death Star is out soon....
There is no ambassador. His appointment was held up by a filibuster in the Galactic Senate.

well, my guess is that zonk just wanted to use the "toy"-image. leastwise it fits perfectly here. and not a single typo! i'm impressed...NOT!
I watched it fullscreen.

DON'T EVER DIVORCE YOUR WIFE! SHE IS A KEEPER. The fact that she let you buy an expensive toy. Then actually help you build it, is un-real. You're a very lucky geek.

Well, you know, actually, it's my expensive toy. I got it for christmas and I let my boyfriend help me build it. But thanks for the compliment

The Lego site states it is an "Imperial-I Class Star Destroyer", not "Class II" as the /. title said.
"Star Builder Destroyed Before Your Eyes"
Wondering why i am doing so strange posts? I am trying to get a "+5,Flamebait" or "-1,Insightful" rating.
Anyone catch the "All Your Base" T-shirt the guy was wearing? I'm surprised nobody mentioned it here!
Anyway, awesome video!
If you're going to to download this file:
Pick a number between 1 and 3 (inclusive). Hold it in your mind, you got one? Good. Substitute x in the following expression with you number:

Part of me is thinking, "These people must have no life. Imagine spending so much money on that."
But another part of me is going INSANE with jealousy.
Anyway, I dream about building a space shuttle with Lego... real size, of course.
During the time they built this thing I slept with 2 different girls.
One of those guys (the one in the dark shirt) was a slacker. He lets the other one do all the work.

Don't trust anyone under thirty.
I tought the video would show the 'growing' of the Destroyer. Instead I see a lot of hands that at the end somehow produce a Destroyer. Although the building is nice, the movie is not really worth looking at.
Next time ask these guys to do the building. There are some real (large) beauties there.

Lucky for them they weren't building a stealth fighter in 2003. Think of the trouble they would be in now!

Geeks constructed lego boxed set of ISD following manuel carefully 2years ago.
Is this the death of slashdot? Ohh wait...
...who's the biggest of them all?
I've got the "huge" version mirrored here because it's the Fourth of July and I'm bored and because I can and because I feel like wasting bandwidth because it's there to be wasted, and you can't stop me!
What is humor if not pain tempered by time?
First the whole instructions thing. That is a custom Lego set, it could be built without instructions but the speeded up version would take 11 hours to watch.
Second, I regret to inform you that you must attend geek retraining classes. Astronomy is a very small subset of geekitude. This video is Lego AND Star Wars, it not only trumps astronomy, it eclipses it.
Finally, and this one might come as a shocker, Slashdot is not CNN. If you want in depth continuing coverage of a story that is of interest to you then Slashdot isn't and never was the place you are looking for. Go to an astronomy site and read all about it to your heart's content.
It never ceases to amaze me that so many supposedly 'smarter than the average bear' people can't grasp the simple concept that Slashdot is mostly a tool to save you the time and trouble of surfing all over the net every day looking for technology news __you haven't heard about yet__. If you already know about a news item then you don't need Slashdot to inform you of its existence. I said mostly a tool because Slashdot is also part entertainment where people can try to make stupid jokes about the news and slam Microsoft in new and creative ways.

Okay, I'm *really* not being a troll, but how is building a Star Destroyer from a *kit* front-page news on Slashdot? Big fucking deal, they know how to use legos. I guess next we're going to find out that they can wipe their own asses...
Instant Karma's gonna get you...
... the little red clock in the upper left? Took me a second watching to notice it, but it gives you a feel for how much it's sped up. Looks like they diliberately placed it there for us, so I thought I'd point it out.
If I go and sit in my car, and put a CD in the CD player, it plays. Simple. If I open a movie file on one of my laptops, running Linux, or even my elderly Mac, it just plays the damn movie. I shouldn't have to go and find codecs and stuff to get it to work.
Dude! That one person has t^ts and I think might be a girl or somethin! Where can I find one that's in to Legos??
Just for you assholes. ;)
What is humor if not pain tempered by time?
It's free too!
I cannot believe there's no torrent yet. Whoever finishes the 'huge' version first -- link a torrent here... Please?
Read Heinlein's 1953 Revolt in 2100, now more than ever.
I want one now.
I am a believer of momentum and curves.
I am not normally one to complain about the stories here, but this got me hyped up over nothing.
I can't believe I just downloaded a video (from a seemingly registration required tracker, forced to use the DHT) in which 2 people bought a boxed set of legos with instructions on exactly how to build an ISD with the exact right peices straight from LEGO.
I completely expected a home brew type lego creation. And instead I got a packaged deal.
Next on slashdot, 2 guys build a complete FORD Truck!!! (webcam inside Ford factory showing 2 workers managing the robots building a truck)

... though i like that geek chic's rack.
...with this lego Star Destroyer.
I knew Star Wars was for fags but this really takes the cake.
WTF, editors....
This bastardizing of English knows no limits. It has come to Slashdot, too.
For a few years now, popular media have been using the word "before" where "in front of" was supposed to be used.
Maybe they are lazy and think 'I want one word, not three', but "before" ia strictly for describing precedence in time.
...where is the pr0n?
The Star Destroyer is a benchmark of construction in some Lego circles. Groups get together to speed-build the thing. A few years back I saw one put together in a little over an hour. (Wired News)
Well on the bright side of things the breasts werent so bad i didnt mind watching them for 4 minutes
The funny thing is you have now probably watched it again so you could examine the breasts yourself.
