Watch the First 9 Minutes of Serenity
An anonymous reader writes "As reported on FireflyFans.net, Universal is attempting further promotion of the sci-fi action film Serenity by making the first 9 minutes of the movie available online. The clip contains the opening backstory that sets an Alliance assassin on the trail of the ship's crew; it's an effective hook. On Yahoo movies, Serenity is ranked as the number 1 film currently in theaters and is hanging in a top-ten spot in the highest rated movies of all time. Slashdot has previously covered Orson Scott Card's review, the film's opening, an interview with Joss Whedon, and much more. It's all out of love..."
Okay now I'm gonna go see this.
I have to wonder, if this works to boost revenue for Serenity, what will the MPAA's response be? It only took them, what, ten years to realize the internet can help them?
All I get is:Unfortunately, the Operating System you are currently using is unsupported.
Any advice?
The movie depends quite a bit on the overall backstory from the one season of the television show. If you haven't seen the show, it doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense.
Luckily "Firefly - The Complete Series" is available on DVD.
I do not deploy Linux. Ever.
"Unfortunately, the Operating System you are currently using is unsupported."
It gave enough backstory for my girlfriend (who never saw the series) to know what was going on, and even covered some stuff I missed in the series (like the setting being one big solar system, not interstellar).
Evidently it only works for people with the "right operating systems".
Is it so hard to use a standard media type?
Why do companies feel like it's right to mave stuff like this that's actually MORE trouble to make incompatible with non-MS/Mac systems?
Seriously. I just do not get this mindset.
Shiny. Let's be bad guys.
...how about improving downloads by using a better format, such as XVID or Quicktime?
Come on now, it's obvious to me that Serenity's fans are boosting the review averages all over the place. Nothing wrong about that, but keep that in mind. Best film of all time?? Let's get serious here, it's a good 2 hours of entertainment, nothing earth shattering here.
On Yahoo movies, Serenity is ranked as the number 1 film currently in theaters and is hanging in a top-ten spot in the highest rated movies of all time.
As with the majority of slashdot posters on here, I am a total sci-fi junkie, but does Serenity really qualify to be within the top 10 movies of all time? Granted, this is a yahoo poll and probably was saturated by people so desperate for anything with a futuristic theme they're willing to hump a movie which was written by a guy who make a witch turn lesbian in another show with declining ratings.
I seriously cannot understand what is so great and original about this movie. Sci-fi meets cowboy theme has already been stretched in 26 episodes (plus a movie) of Cowboy Bebop.
I don't even see Bladerunner on this Yahoo top 10 of all time list. Dune? Seriously, are you going to tell me Serenity is better than Bladerunner?
I don't see the hype personally, sure it's an ok tv show but it's nothing special. Some nice looking girls, a few gags, some spaceships and that's about it. Better than most but not great.
Mod me as a troll if you like but I know there are a few people that think like this so *shrugs*
Here's the direct link to the video file, although I still don't know of a Linux player that can handle it:
http://video.vividas.com/CDN1/3929_Serenity/viv/3-- Even if a god did exist, why the fsck should I worship it?
I saw a few (600MB+) copies of this on gnutella recently. Probably the whole movie. Good luck.
but i have my theory: with no new star trek and star wars fare in the pipe, desperate sci fi serial pulp fans are jumping ship and clinging to this piece of driftwood
yeah, serenty is ok, but it's no alien or blade runner
you may now mod me into oblivion for not blindly stating my allegiance to the high school clique and mindlessly jumping on the hype machine
so sorry, pfffffft
intellectual property law is philosophically incoherent. it is your moral duty to ignore it or sabotage it
The parent is totally right. We are in a total drought of good sci fi. Action + Space/Future theme does not necessarily equate to sci-fi or anything a geek should watch. Please, guys, have some taste.
Universal Exec : Ok guys, let's do something completely new : We will make the first nine minutes of Serenity available online !
Henchman : Ok, but how much do we charge them for it ?
Universal Exec : Nothing, we just let them see the first...
Henchman : Ok, popups ? Right, popups ?!
Universal Exec : No, we will just let them see...
Henchman : I got you : Ads, right ? Banners !
Universal Exec : No, we will JUST let them see the first nine...
Henchman : Ok, but we HAVE to annoy them somehow... How about some proprietary plugin instead of going for the normal formats ? Let's screw a littlebit with their minds before they get their free content.
Universal Exec : Fuckit, it's lunchtime.
The movie has a 'cheap' made-for-tv feel to it. The actual plot/conflict is absurdly pointless. Aside from the initial sequence, I never feel convinced that any of the effort by the 'good side' or the 'bad side' is significantly important to those characters. The plot is boring, the monologues are bad, and their attempt at humor is sub-par. It's not as bad as Chronicles of Riddick or Battlefield Earth, but I would stick to movies like "Proof" for the weekend.
Fun first nine minutes. Very exciting. These people are idiots, though. The beginning was so awesome I definitely would have paid four or five bucks to watch it after watching the beginning. I'll go to the theater to see it, but I doubt they'll see four or five dollars of my money once the theater cut is out of the way.
Cluetrain coming? Someday soon.
The only shame I feel about this movie is that it is a gem released during such a mundane (IMHO) year for theatrical releases, so although it stands out from the 2005 crowd, that in itself unfortunately isn't saying much at all. Still, I'd recommend it very highly to those who havn't seen it yet. And if you are even a more moderate fan of the series, then what the hell are you waiting for? Gogogo.
One thing that did dissapoint me was the lack of the theme tune, unless I missed it, but I didn't hear even a snippet during the whole movie :-(
She's built like a steak house, but she handles like a bistro....
Not really representative of the series or much of the rest of the movie. Although...
since its the first 9 minutes exactly as seen in the theatre, it doesn't give away any of the rest. Rest assured, there are many good bits to be given away!
I hope this becomes a more common practice in the future; I believe this is a far better hook than a trailer.
Performing sanity checks on your own beliefs is vital in avoiding poisoned koolaid.
I think that one of the most impressive things is that the video link survived the slashdot effect. Or am I too late?
What if I'm using Safari with a popup blocker? What if reloading without blocking returns the exact same page? Why can't you can't provide a plugin-free experience like Google Video? Wankers.
Good thing I've already seen the movie and don't need enticing.
.viv? Sounds like a renamed .mpg file. I'm postitive they didn't create a new file format just for this trailer.
/path/to/serenity.viv
The nice thing about linux is that most distros come with the `file` utility. Just run it on the ".viv";
file
And it will tell you what kind of file you've got. Just change the extension...you know what, and I'm not in Linux right now to test, but most Linux movie players aren't dominated by file extention, unlike their Windows counterparts. If I were a betting man, I'd say you could probably double click and open with mplayer and it'd likely Just Work(TM)...
Do not click, it goes to a goatse image.
Already tried it; it just says 'data', so file doesn't know about it. I've tried it with a number of players so far (xine, mplayer, realplayer, even Windows Media Player running under Codeweavers' crossover) and none of them can read it.
My guess is that it's an mpeg wrapped up in some sort of drm that requires their encryption key to play it.
-- Even if a god did exist, why the fsck should I worship it?
Am I the only one distrubed by JW's obsession with them?
I haven't really seen this discussed anywhere. On the other hand, I haven't looked very hard.
Just curious.
Ooo man the floppy drive is broken. No wait. The computer is just upside down.

The neat thing about this is their content delivery method. It's a Java app.
It worked perfectly on my WindowsXP machine AND my friend's OS X machine. How about Linux? Has anyone tried running it on their Java-enabled phone?

what? a DRM proprietary video streaming method and you're creaming your pants over it?

Not all nerds want to hear about MS, Linux, New Case Mods, Ham Radio Operators, New Space Probes, Creating Life Out of Amino Acids, Monkeys Learning How To Fly, Reconstructing the 1918 Influenza, etc, etc. But a lot do, or would, if it were to happen. Guess what? Slashdot tries to cater to them all, at least to some extent. Is every single nerd going to be thrilled with every single story? No. Oh well. Are there going to be a slew of nerds out there getting pissed because they're hearing too much about any of the above, including Serenity? Yes. But guess what? Bitching about it won't change a fucking thing. I'm not sure what to tell you if you really don't like it other than a: do it yourself, b: go somewhere else; or c: create a firefox plugin to strip out stories that contain whatever-words-you-don't-want-to-hear-about.
I'm not saying you can't bitch, I'm just saying you're wasting your time, and unless you get some sort of thrill out of playing the down-modded martyr, in the end, it's not going to be worth it.
But, hey, do what you want.
I would neither set flash gordon not any of the start wars films very high on the "originality" or "story" scale, so i dont think that example is _that_ convincing.
HI O WISE PRINCE. WHT TOOK U SO DAM LONG?
The format comes from Vividas, and while this page says they support Linux, they seem to mean it in the sense that you might be able to run their Java player under Linux if you're lucky.
Correction to the submission: this is being released by United International Pictures, the company responsible for international release of Serenity. Since UIP is partially owned by Universal, it might be seen as semantics, but UIP has a distinct marketing plan for the movie from that of Universal.
It's also important to note, because it might seem like odd timing for Universal to release new marketing materials for a movie already released - it might even seem a move of desperation to get "butts in seats" before it leaves theaters... but it makes more sense as new marketing released by UIP for a movie they are opening today or within the next few weeks.
Best. movie. ever.
I like the voiceover version of Blade Runner better!
There - I've said it - let the pillory | hanging | pressing begin.
"Win treats sysadmins better than users. Mac treats users better than sysadmins. Linux treats everyone like sysadmins."
The player that is - at least under Tiger on an original Dual USB G3. A/V syncing is perfect at "small" - all "sizes" play full screen anyway. The film is the bomb.
"Pyxis Supply Station" - hunh. Glad to see Sony's two pound, First Generation GPS receiver design is finally being put to use. Glad I held onto mine.
"Win treats sysadmins better than users. Mac treats users better than sysadmins. Linux treats everyone like sysadmins."
...psychics in glowey blue rooms.
Okay.
I'm one of those people who reads slashdot regularly, runs linux on his computer, and has NOT watched the show Firefly and did NOT go see the movie the week it opened.
However, I do love sci-fi, I just never took the opportunity to get hooked on this show. (I have enough vices already!)
In any case, look: Advertising, after a movie has been released, is to encourage those who have not seen the movie or may not have been following it so closely but who _might_ be interested, to fork out the $10 and go check it out. I admit, the trailer was sort of interesting but nothing that really grabbed my attention. Mostly it's the hype I've read on this website that has kept me interested, and is what is making me want to go see it. I have no idea about the Firefly story, but since everyone seems to think it's so amazing I might be pursuaded to go see it, especially with a little enticement like showing me the first few minutes of the movie.
Now. I run linux. So I can't watch this "teaser". Let me repeat: I AM PRECISELY THE TARGET AUDIENCE for this advertisement, and yet the message I get when I actually make the effort of clicking on the link and going to the website to check it out is: You can't watch this, your operating system is not supported. This is not something that happens by accident. They are ACTIVELY dissuading linux users from watching the teaser. I had to click "view source" just to find the file, and I'm downloading it, but I realize it's very unlikely I'll be able to watch it. They are publishing in some stupid non-standard format. And for what reason? I can't think of a single one. They are giving it away for FREE, why would they be worried about copyright? At the VERY least, if you don't want to get into weird IP battles by using "frowned upon" formats like DivX (though I don't see the problem with OSS formats like Xvid), publish it in straight MPEG, even if it's low resolution, but my goodness, don't DENY your target audience the ability to watch it.
Whoever is in charge of marketing has no clue.
As it is, I still don't know if I'll bother going to see it, especially considering how expensive the theaters are these days and how little time I have.
If only I could watch the teaser...
It finished downloading by the time I typed this out. And look, mplayer and VLC are both out of luck.
It's all relative. What's more likely to rot your brain, Firefly or Survivor/American Idol/"Reality Show VII - the really crap one"? Personally I love Firefly, but I think before you say it's really bad tv you should take a look at what the average idiot is watching.
How is parent flamebait? It's the persons opinion. Has slashdot become the republican party, where we must supress views we don't agree with?
I'm unaffiliated with their site! That being said...
/. had it up. /. readers who might care about Serenity have already seen it in the theater.
This same story was posted on www.digg.com about 30 hours before
That, and I'd bet that a lot of the
Plus, its not a linux-compatible stream.
This movie is being promoted via blogspace with private screenings and who knows what other incentives for those who mention and promote it. First the poll, now the article. Maybe it's a good movie, but this astroturf hyping is kind of lame. It is suspect.
The movie would have been better if it was made in DLP. http://www.dlp.com/ film is so... ...old.
The parent post deserves better than Flamebait. He is absolutely correct. If only I had mod points....
It would be strictly correct to chastise them for dropping the ball by removing Linux (and apparantly any non-Windows platform) compatibility.
The worst thing is that there is probably just a stupid if statement at the start of the applet that aborts if the JVM is not being run on Windows!
Morons, I'm surrounded by morons!
I've already seen the film twice, so what really shocked me is how well that worked. The video started almost instantly, and I'm on a modest DSL line shared with a neighbor. Good quality. Some noticable compression artifacts and the sound was just slightly out of sync, but still, very good for what it is.
And to those complaining about free advertising: Let's complain instead about the granularity of SlashCode's RSS. There should be a seperate feed for each section, and some way of getting your customized index as a feed. Then you can easily exclude Sci-Fi stuff you think is so off topic.
But I digress. Everything the studio can do to help Sereinty/Firefly/Whedon Enterprises is good. I hope we see more quality naturalistic science fiction like this and Battlestar Gallactica in the future.
I agree. It's horrible. The cliches, the cliches...
I don't know what else is on television right now, because I don't watch television (I borrowed it on DVD), but if this is the BEST TV SHOW EVAR, this really, really makes me glad that I gave up on network television. Holy crap.
It's like Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Even More Indulgent And Forcefully Quirky (WINK WINK WINK WINK WINK WINK WINK). Oh yeah, I forgot to add a few pop culture references and snarky one-liners. Zing! There, that should do it.
I can't stand Joss Whedon's writing. He's actually arguably worse than Joe Eszterhas, the man responsible for Showgirls.
Amazing how those nine mins just totally changed my mind. I thought Serenity looked pretty dumb and campy from the trailers, but now I'm actually going to go see it. Go figure.
I already wanted to see the movie, but didn't have the motivation to drag my less geeky friends out with me. Now I definitely do. What would have been even better is if you would have offered me the rest of the movie in H.264, XviD, or Theora for $20 or so. I would have bitten without a second thought and I'm sure my friends would have done the same after they each watched the trailer from the link I'll IM.
Game... blouses.
I probably would not have gone to see this movie. Now, I think I will. The acting doesn't seem to shabby, and the plot moves along fast enough for you not predict every tangent. Of course, this is just the first few minutes, the rest could be aweful. But I know I've seen far worse scifi flicks within the same opening-sequence timeframe. Cheers!
Watching the start of Serenity has made me even more determined to watch the full film... ...but I can't.
The premiere date here is in December. I'll probably end up downloading it instead of waiting any longer than I already have. Which is kind of ironic, since I am willing to pay to see this movie, here, now. But there aren't anybody around to take up my offer. So I turn to the pirates, which offer it for free, and can deliver faster than any legitimate channels.
When will the media companies learn that the globe is just a little bit bigger than the United States of America?
... River is supposed to be 17 and the actress is 24. Those who are most free with their money at the boxoffice are the young ones... besides, Whedon wishes to change society so better start with them before they get too brainwashed ;)
If Google really cared they would fix Android Chrome to reflow text, instead of discriminating
by a guy who make a witch turn lesbian in another show with declining ratings.
No, no. When the ratings started to decline, he had one lesbian die, so she was the dead lesbian, and then the other lesbian turned evil, so she was the evil lesbian. This is called the dead and evil lesbian cliche, and I assure you that Joss wasn't the first one to do it. Hell, they even had it on Babylon 5.

All very true, but now you're going to get flamed for posting about firefox (you missed that one in your list). It's a no-win scenario, my friend.
Sent from my computer.
Now GET OFF MY LAWN!
I'm postitive they didn't create a new file format just for this trailer.
They are selling their vieweing services to everybody, so perhaps they would make a new format for that?
That said, its probably windows media.
If Google really cared they would fix Android Chrome to reflow text, instead of discriminating
Willow was shown kissing Tara in 5x16, "The Body". It was a big episode for other reasons; Joss had said that he didn't want it to be a big "OMFG LESBO KISS EPISODE", and so he made it incidental. So that was probably a good idea on his part.
Now, Willow was shown in bed and implicitly naked with Tara, with the implication that exciting action had been going on, in 6x19, "Seeing Red". When Tara finally did get dressed, she got shot by Warren, because lesbians are only okay if they're implicit (floating magical orbs and whatnot, not naked girls under the sheets). Joss thus honked off the lesbian Buffy fan club, who have gone off and formed their own alternate universe in protest. His attempts to break ground by showing the first lesbian sex on network TV. Of course, this was done two episodes before the series finale, in 7x20, "Touched", when he didn't have to worry about getting renewed. Season seven was a mess, anyway.

There was an old format from Real called vivo but its probably something new from Vividas.
There is another add in the same format here. For beer
If Google really cared they would fix Android Chrome to reflow text, instead of discriminating
Actually they are cab files. Unzip won't work; try cabextract instead.
Nice detective work, btw.
Sorry, I must have been fooled by the giant UNIVERSAL logo right at the beginning of the video.
I wonder.
I can't think of a single good reason to put the "list of everyone who participated" on the film at either end of a movie. At the begining of a film, it's usually just annoying to go through all the people who have to be mentioned while essencially nothing happens. (a very few films have made this work) At the end of the film, no one sticks around long enough to find out who the assistant grip was or who was the best boy let alone even know what those things are. So why are they there in the production run of every feature film?
Can you be Even More Awesome?!
I'm using beta 2 of FireFox in OS X right now, and the movie played in high resolution mode for me, including sound. Looked great in fact. (Using a dual 2.0Ghz PowerMac G5)
Of their demo files
If Google really cared they would fix Android Chrome to reflow text, instead of discriminating
... many fans say you need to know nothing about the series. And so do people who haven't seen it. Like when they reviewed it on The BBC (27 minuttes in)
If Google really cared they would fix Android Chrome to reflow text, instead of discriminating
yeah, serenty is ok, but it's no alien or blade runner
Thank god!
If Google really cared they would fix Android Chrome to reflow text, instead of discriminating
I DIDN'T like the series. I tried watching Firefly 2 or 3 times since I enjoyed Buffy and Angel quite a lot.
I am ESTATIC over how good Serenity is. The plot was much better than adequate. The character exposition and development were top notch. The humor in the dialog was brilliant. The effects were outstanding. It is by far the best sci-fi I've seen since Empire Strikes back.
I didn't go to the movie thinking I would react to the movie this way. I wasn't impressed with the trailers and the advertising is just average. It was the good word of mouth that it got that lured me into the theatre.
Serenity is just that good and deserves the hype.
Other 110 minutes here or here.
Actually, it's not available.
All there is is an image containing no picture, but rather rendered text that tells me I have to click on some pop-up to "authorize" a player. Yet the pop-up doesn't show up, of course, as it's probably dependent upon my letting the site run code on my computer -- not going to happen.
What I've learned from this: The studio's marketing group quite sucks. Plus, this "Vividas" junk is something to avoid in the future as well. They've pegged the lameness meter. More, they've bent the needle.
My bad, I think they're all JAR/ZIP files except the Windows one, which is a CAB file. Not like unzip or cabextract is going to get you anywhere regardless :-/
:-)
Oh, and thanks

I think the two main reasons for the custom video type is to make it easier for end users. The viewer is the a fullscreen viewer that streams really well, and i suspect their file format has to do with it. They do support a varity of platforms, more than most:
Minimum machine software specification
PC Compatible Apple Macintosh Linux (still in testing)
Operating System:
Microsoft Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP
Browsers:
Internet Explorer 5 or better.
Mozilla 1.0 or better
Firefox 1.0 or better
Opera 7.0 or better
(May work in other browsers, however these are untested)
Browser Extensions:
An Active X enabled browser ~ or ~ Sun Java 1.3.0 ~ or ~ better ~ or ~ Microsoft Java
Operating System:
OSX version 10.2.7 or better (with all current patches)
Browsers:
Safari version 1.2.4 or better (fully patched)
Mozilla and IE are not always supported, as they lack javascript to java connectors.
Browser Extensions:
Any Sun Java except un-patched 10.3.9.

Debian, Red hat, Suse
Emulators:
Only Wine has been tested
Emulated Browsers:
Firefox and IE
Emulated Browser Extensions:
Sun JVM 1.4 or better.
Waffles rock.
These 9 minutes are there to reassure people that no, you will get something out of it even if you don't know the show. And I think it's a good idea. I hope it works, because I really think this Firefly thing should go on. Like the Matrix, it might take some time and good word-of-mouth to drive up ticket sales. Of course, the sequels to Serenity, if they come, had better not suck like the Matrix sequels did!
Won't work under linux.
Can anyone re-encode to avi or mpeg-4?
There are lies, damned lies, and statistics.
The "cluestick" is that Microsoft keeps subverting open standards so's everone must buy their buggy software. To do this, they abuse their monopoly, which should have been broken up when the US wont the case in court five years ago. But Bushists dropped the ball, wink wink, and now here we are.
To accept the lesson of the cluestick, we have to accept Microsoft as our lord and master. We might as well shut down comp sci courses and let Microsoft become computer science. All hail Redmond, the source of all that is clueful and proper.
Eh, I'm off to bed. America, get electroshock treatment. You're in a neocon coma.
I think, as a rule, anyone who posts "this show sucks" should also list their five favourite shows, so readers can see what it's being compared with.
The more I learn about the Internet, the more amazed I am that it works at all.
Programming != computer science. Programmers == overpaid plumbers.
My other car is first.
The "cluestick" needed here is the site owners. There are plenty of sites capable of providing media clips viewable on any reasonably modern platform... to include Linux. While the grandparent poster did some off as whiney, they did have a good point. It's not hard to put content out there that's compatable to a wider audience.
History of Violence. (Well, until today)
Check the reviews. Check the tomatometer. It beats out Serenity with the broad spectrum of critics and it beats it out handily if you only go with the pros.
Great movie.
I haven't seen Serenity yet, but I plan to see that too.
Actually, Wallace & Gromit opened today and it's out doing both of them.
On the Tomatometer, Serenity is also outdone by Corpse Bride. That makes Serenity the 4th best movie in theaters right now. Seems like a pretty good time to go to theater actually, especially given how bad this year has been.
http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/8/20/95
I wasnt teased at all by that sign telling me you need Windows to watch the trailer. They should smack the idiot who sold them their media server upside their head and demand support for a usable format like mpeg, rm or just about anything that isnt highly obscure.

And I have friends going to see it *again*.
It's the same actors as in the series, and in my opinion they captured their characters very well (I haven't actually seen Serenity yet).

IFilm now has the first nine minutes available in three other formats: streaming Windows Media, QuickTime and Real Player
Are those more accessible to your OS?
Yes I expect this applies less to people working in areas of IT but I bet it is still more the vase than not. So choosing a neutral (standard) format probably just wasn't an issue that crossed anyones mind.

With a java app? Would be even more impressing, if it would not use some lame dll that my firewall warns me about*.
Does anyone know the internal format?
Btw: Space is pause. In case you have to go to the toilet.
* I have the Agnitum Outpost firewall. Prety sure the best windows FW out there.

First of all, the MPAA isn't against movies being given away on the internet. They're for the makers of the movies having the control over whether or not they are given away on the internet.
When the makers give away 9 minutes of this movie, they're advertising.
When you steal someone's movie from them, you are not "helping them advertise". Okay?
Second, if the MPAA was going take notice of this, they would have taken notice when it was done before. There have been several movies where they gave away the first 9 minutes on www.apple.com/quicktime (or whatever it is) as a publicity stunt. I believe the first one was Super Troopers. And it worked greet for them, BTW. That movie made more money at the box office than a small-time comedy like that would have otherwise (IMHO).

As I said "Mod Me Down" and yes it happened.
Please realize that the fact that you successfully predicted that your original post would be modded down does not in any way add to the value or credibility of that post. I can post a goatse link and make the same prediction.
Further, you state "Not all "Nerds" want to hear about Manga or Serenity every other day for the last month", and then accuse the rest of us of group-think? You're right, we aren't all interested in the same things, hence the variety of stories. There have been a lot of Serenity-related stories lately because there have been a lot of things happening lately with respect to this one particular facet of geekdom. Don't like it? Cool. You're probably not alone, but based on the activity of the threads I'd say that there's enough interest to warrant it's inclusion. For those who aren't interested, there are 14 other sections of Slashdot and who knows how many other stories. Take your pick.
Boundless Expansion, Self-Transformation, Dynamic Optimism, Intelligent Technology, Spontaneous Order- BEST DO IT SO!
Wine version was 20050930.
Everyone is very entitled to want to watch Serenity or Manga. Everyone, including you, are allowed to post they love Serenity. But... Shouldn't the reverse be the truth as well? Shouldn't someone be able to post that all the hype about Serenity is Overrated? Must all views on /. be in the positive? Must all dissenting views be modded to -1 Troll?
/. GroupThink phenonenom I would have posted as an AC and not risked my Karma.
/. viewers don't like to think they are narrow minded sheep, but the Mod system makes it easy to be so. There are +1 to +5 for agreeing views but only -1 for dissenting views. One Mod can make a comment +5 and it then takes alot of moderating effort to drown that comment. One mod can make a dissenting view -1 and the comment is gone - into the world of "n replies beneath your current threshold.". Only people who read with a -1 filter will see it. Sometimes an inflamitory subject that will be modded +5 in a Re: is the only way to bring attention to your a post you know will be made -1.
Yes, the moderation system makes it so. Look at it for a while and I hope you see what I mean. When you get mod status you get 5 points to use how you will. Because these points are a prize to be used wisely you tend to use them on things you *really* like or *really* believe in and on making your point in a different way to just posting. Because only very few people who find Serenity of interest, the moderation will be in one direction.
If this argument was about a situation three months ago when Google got all that press and there was a lot of dissent about it aren't I entitled to express the same opinion about Serenity? Just like that flood of Google news was classed by a large number of people I stand alone in classing Serenity as Overrated.
I hated Buffy, I hated Firefly, I don't like Joss Weedon movies (just like I don't like Woody Allen movies or Sandra Bullock or Hugh Grant) Even so, I still looked at all the trailers and the teaser this article publisises and came to the opinion I also wouldn't like this show either. Why is it - say in the poll or a previous article - when I say it's overrated and there are better shows out there am I labelled as a -1 troll? While I expected it with this whole thread I didn't expect it on a rational and very valid opinion expressed previously
Here's a link for you to examine, and the whole premise of my original argument. It is mostly irrelevent but it contains one word you must get the definition for.
Please go to this forensic definition site scroll down to G and look at the word GroupThink.
I still consider my point valid - I know you will still say "I can choose just not read articles I don't like" but I wonder, if you only wanted to see positive comments or only read about things that you liked would you have a very wide and diverse view of the world? Would your opinions and beliefs ever grow and evolve?
If my original intention was really just to troll and not to actually try to point out this whole
My point about GroupThink is valid and deserves to be heard.
I said this dissent would be modded down and it was.
My goal was achieved. I knew I would be rated -1, I also knew a GroupThinker would get +5 Interesting to bring my subject to the fore and cause some people to go digging, the fact you read my post and I am able to eventually make this counter-post has achieved my aims. You may not admit to GroupThink, You might still say "Just don't read it" but my point is made. It's now in Google. One day it will be found.
Have a nice day.

It appears that you are the one that needs to be straightened out. Interstellar travel is not shown because traveling outside the solar system would effectively cut off that ship from the rest of civilization for many, many years. In a relatively dense solar system, these kinds of delays are avoidable.
Firefly is actually one of the MOST realistic shows because it does not conviently introduce the extremely implausible/impossible concept of FLT travel without time dialation. Warp drive, hyperspace, worm holes and jump gates are fairly unscientific plot devices almost always used without considering the theoretical consequences (such as the fact that you CANNOT posses FLT travel without also possesing time travel. This is blatantly obvious to anyone with a basic understanding of Special and General Relativity. No, you can't get around this via wormholes or some such nonsense. If wormholes warp spacetime enough to allow you to effectly travel faster than light, then they also warp it enough to allow you to go back in time.)
The solution to your problem is rather straightforward: the original settlers of the solar system came here on interstellar ships. They either used some form of hibernation, lived their lives normally (with perhaps many generations living and dying on the spacecraft, if the distance was very great), or they traveled at high Relativistic speeds, completing the journey in mere hours/days/months (from THEIR point of view--in the rest of the universe, hundreds or thousands or millions of years might have passed.) The reason why you don't see any ships using this same interstellar tech is because it would mean cutting themselves off from the rest of civilization (and cutting themselves out of the main storyline in the process.)
Btw, there's nothing to indicate that the colony ships carried hundreds of millions of people. I don't believe that Joss has given any indication as to how much time has passed--for all we know, only a few hundred colonists made it to the new solar system.
How can you voice an opinion of a movie you've never seen? Only on Slashdot...
The characters' personalities are completely different than they were on the series.
Anonymous Cowards suck.
