It's not like you just go out and buy a gaming pc
Oh wait you can
Not for you ? Oh if only there were someplace that would let you pick your components and they would build the PC for you

Re:Multiplayer
When we get the Steam boxes at large that will likely be easier.
Gigabyte have their Brix devices.

One interesting Steam box design I saw was one which was hanged as a "backpack" on your TV.
I guess depending on whatever one already have a powerful PC or whatever one prefer tablets there may be a difference in whatever one would just want a simple box which can stream the games using the PC as rendering engine or a more capable one which will actually be running the games.

http://store.steampowered.com/...Since the Steam controller and Steam machines with SteamOS was delayed Alienware launches with Windows 8.1, Steam and the Xbox 360 controller instead (the Xbox One work in Windows now too with official drivers but have to be connected with micro-USB cable rather than wireless, I don't know when they will fix wireless connection for it but I haven't bought one waiting for that to happen in case I can't buy it separately.)

Re:Apple showed
That being said, you could get an Alienware M11x for the price of the fully loaded iPad.

Under one condition
Excluding gamers on the go (or anyone else that needs a lot of computing power on the go), I could foresee netbooks replacing conventional laptops over the next decade or so. It would be nice if more of them were designed as convertible tablets, but meh...can't have everything.
Alienware's new m11x will help bridge the gap between full size notebooks and netbooks, but the price will have to come down while keeping the upgraded power for netbooks to really take over.

Even better than that, the computers being sold as 'green PC' meaning thats the mfr's product name, and has nothing to do with being enviromentally conscious.

Sure! You just have to plug it into one of the MSFT-recommended expansion packs...

Why a PC?You asked for a low power solution to do the following: "running 24/7, for things like web or FTP servers, BitTorrent, or simply to make sure I don't miss any messages on IRC or my instant messaging client".
Why not use your low-power embedded router as your 'always-on' system?
Grab a Linksys WRTSL54GS or some other supported model and install OpenWRT. From there you can install GNU screen, a torrent client, an IRC client, and an instant messaging client of your choosing. The device has a USB 2.0 port so you can attach a large external hard drive or multi-GB flash drive for your torrent downloads.
You'd have to get use to using CLI tools, or if you so choose, you can engineer something web-based using an embedded web server.
This device can remain on 24/7 and consumes about 7-10 watts. On the plus side, you can also use OpenWRT to apply QoS to your torrent downloads so you can keep rocking your FPS or webcam pauselessly on your power-sapping neon-lit dual SLI Aurora.

Re:It's a top-20 list for sysadmins
So don't force what doesn't come naturally. You'll be much happier if you stick to an OS that suits your personality. And you'll be doing the rest of us a favor, too; you leave Macs to Mac users, and we'll leave beige to you.
Good job. The logical progression after failing to convert the audience into your little elite club, is to claim "you are not worthy of possessing a Mac" and further engage in your delusions of superiority.
BTW, I really find your opinion of the plain beige PC-s amusing. Do you think shiny white boosts your IQ?
In this case, I've a Futurama quote for you:
Dwight: "Put this flame sticker on the back side. It makes the ship go faster..."
Hermes: "And what is your scientific explanation for this?"
Dwight: "... I'm twelve?" -
Re:::sigh:: oh you silly console fanboys...
I have also been a console/PC gamer for a very long time and I would say that I already see the end of the constant upgrade cycle for PCs
...
I'm not saying it is going to happen tomorow, but I suspect that if you bought a top of the line system that it would take several years before you could no longer meet the minimum requirements of new games. Another thing I noticed is that there are Millions of people who are playing World of Warcraft, which is a 2 year old game that wasn't that (graphically) impressive when it was new, and no one complains about how ugly it is. -
Rehashed Sager?
But I thought Alienware has always been repackaged overpriced Sager notebooks? The just slap a coat of paint on, then charge another $400 for their "value added" service.
For example: http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/AMD_systems.htm l
This system is $3,229.00 before customization
The equivalent Alienware notebook w/ a different paint scheme:
$4,499.00
Sweet Jesus! I'm in the wrong business if I can repaint a notebook and sell it for an additional $1270 bucks!
Okay, lemme hold my excitement and see the specs for the difference:
Windows Home edition vs media edition
Whoa! The video actually has *less* memory than the Sager!
80G vs 120G hard disk
And you're missing a bluetooth adapter that the sager has too!
So you actually get LESS machine for $1270 more! Balancing out the hard disk only makes the Sager $3304, or $75 more expensive.
Okay, I'm in! Anyone interested in buying this notebook, send me your money and I'll sell you a custom airbushed *cough* notebook. Free shipping! -
Re:Oh, so important.
Personally, if I had to buy a PC (Windows) laptop I would buy a Lenovo, because aside from being a great computer, I like the black professional looking laptops as apposed to a shiny Alienware (Alienware are great for gaming, but for a laptop I don't want to have a super shiny green laptop). Now that is not to say that I don't want a MacBook Pro, they are very professional and clean looking, while also being beautiful.

Re:Article Summary
You are unlikely to have dual-7800 Ultra cards running SLI with an AMD X2 with Cool-N-Quiet, and Raid 0 in a laptop.
Here's the page where you can buy almost exactly that at alienware:
http://www.alienware.com/Configurator_Pages/aurora _m9700.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AURORA-M-9700&SubCode=SK U-DEFAULT
(the options of interest):
Dual 256MB NVidia® GeForce(TM) Go 7900 GS - SLI Enabled [+$399 or $12/mo.] -
Extreme Performance (RAID 0) [+$190 or $6/mo.]
Only adds $600 to your laptop price!
The main thing it is missing is the dual core turion x2 ... I presume they don't offer that yet because the dual core laptop procs were only released ~10 days ago, so my guess is that in another week or so you'll be able to buy exactly what you wanted. -
what kind of development are you doing?
Really, it seems like there must be something special about your dev environment to need all that. Why not just use an internet connection and connect back into your dev box at work? Check in and out code remotely using CVS, SVN, VSS, or a number of other products. Use your local solid laptop to compile, or use a virtual session back at the office.
There are a number of high speed options available to you almost everywhere now. Simply telling your travel person (secretary or other dedicated staff) that you require high speed internet access in your hotel arrangements. Normally this doesn't really change the cost of the hotel.
Your specs mention 2.5" drives.. multiple. That's going to be almost impossible to find. all the rest of your specs are a laptop (even on board video).
Here's one...

Sexy hardware
Of course, games enthusiasts who like to customise their systems and upgrade their hardware (such as graphics cards) at the drop of a hat may still prefer the tinkering freedom a PC allows.
That sounds like most PC gamers to me, actually. Casual gamers are more likely to stick to a console. In any event, gamers are a crowd where looks matter. A Mac can be sexy, but an Alienware box is somehow simultaneously sexy and badass, and that's what gamers like.

Right idea, wrong CPU
The 3.6 GHz of Pentium 4 power is desktop standard, and the mobile GeForce 6800
Or buy the Aurora M7700, which is the same thing but with an Athlon 64 X2 CPU. Significantly less heat and way better performance. That would be much less likely to overheat than the P4 version. Plus bringing a recently purchased P4 machine to a LAN party is a good way to scream "CLUELESS!" to your fellow gamers.
Better yet, get the same Clevo D900K notebook without the expensive bling from a vendor with a less elaborate marketing department. -
Re:Better yet...
Not true. I've had an old Inspiron 8000 whose video card (originally ATI 128) I upgraded personally without much trouble by buying a spare part from Dell. First time it was upgraded to Geforce2 (mobile version) for ~$150 and then later to Geforce4 for another ~$150. Eventually, I had an opportunity to also upgrade it to Radeon 9000 but never bothered to as I got a whole new laptop. Apart from that, something that Dell has that practically no other computer seller does (or perhaps does on paper but never follows through) is that Dell replaces the entire machine if you have problems. Namely, the aforementioned Dell I had bought (it was 800MHz mobile PIII) was refurbished and after a couple weeks it died on me. The Dell tried first repairing the computer by sending a technician to my house within 24 hours, and after they figured out that it was motherboard, I got a whole new computer which had twice the RAM and a 1GHz mobile PIII (!!!). Couple years later, I did a stupid thing by dragging my laptop bag on wheels over a cobble stone street and my laptop naturally started behaving weirdly. The techinican was dispatched again within 24 hours, tried replacing parts, and eventually ordered a new replacement machine and this time I got a mobile P4 at 1.8GHz (!!!). This laptop is still fine 5 years later running Linux and Windows. For your information, Alienware also has been selling laptops advertising upgradeable video card since 2003: http://www.alienware.com/Press_Kit_Pages/innovati

Oh, the day has come than...
Time that we can compare Mac Laptops to other (branded) Laptops in $$$ basis.
http://www.alienware.com/product_detail_pages/area -51_m7700/area-51_m7700_features.aspx?SysCode=PC-L T-AREA51-M-7700&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT
$2000 (standard configuration)
Alienware is not a OEM brand.
So, that machine should be compared to the Macbook $1997 model.
If it is being compared to 2 year old laptops as some (pc knowing) posters suggest, the real story should be the scandal of allowing Mac (or PC) fanboys review machines on known, respected sites like Ars.
As a G5 1600 desktop user, my day has come. I can easily compare Intel Macintoshes to the other "branded" x86. It looks like they are overpriced and the PowerPC fans turned out to be right. -
Re:Alienware?
Alienware is a private company. Their corporate info

PQ, Gamespy et al.
I remember back in the early days of Planet Quake, when Bastard (Basty) was running the site. This was of course before Gamespy transformed from being a little ping tool, into a giant marketing juggernaught. Quake lovers like myself would collect in #planetquake and chat about the latest mod, hang out on servers and submit news to contribute to the (then) growing online Quake community.
I did a lot of mods myself. Some I would have liked to have finished, but the ones I did finish all collect dust now. (and some of them collected dust THEN)
At the same time Bluesnews was also a great place to find out awesome insights to the whole Quake scene.
Look at these two sites now, and all you can see is marketing.
They both, arguably, sold out. I don't know why... maybe they like affording new computers from Alienware, or maybe they just like the concept of selling their souls. Another person who sold out bigtime was Dakota, the CTF guy that some of you might remember as the founder of Captured.com (which is now closed). He joined Gamespy and is running a large part of that company now. He used to post amazing CTF news, mods, tourney info and stuff.
Vid journalists all get bought up by the industry.
But the games changed, too. It used to be a lot of fun to play Quake or Thunderwalker on servers, but then other games came along and stole the show, thus putting an end to the tight-knit community. Each new game fractured the core community until, for quite a while, there was no cohesion.
All good things come to an end, and I think that is how we really know they were good. -
They will get you a Vaio ...
A new computer to replace the infected one that I have now. Any of these will work great! http://alienware.com/alx_pages/main_alx.aspx

Everyone here, do me a favor.
Go to Voodoo Laptops, look at this
Then go to Alienware, look at this
Then look at the case on the Widow
Seems someone is outsourcing these things...they have the ports in the same exact spots, I wonder if thier parts are interchangeable. And the insides are exactly the same. I would assume so, since they are identical on the outside. -
Go for AlienWare next
Now that you've tried the lesser machine, go for a review of one from Alienware next. http://www.alienware.com/ A friend of mine got his alienware notebook last month for only a few hundred more than you quote. It came with 3GB of ram and two 120GB sata hard drives with a similar speed CPU. Certainly a lot more computer for just a few dollars more.
I guess it'd be ok for lan parties but otherwise I really don't see the need for a notebook with 5 minutes of battery life and that requires a group of native bearers to haul it around for you. -
Wait for the AMD X2 dualcore version
Wait for the AMD dualcore version. Less heat, WAY more performance. It's a standard Clevo D900K notebook, also sold by M-Tech, VoodooPC, Alienware, etc.

Made by Clevo
Looks like this machine is manufactured by Clevo, the Clevo D900T... It's also sold by Alienware (Alienware Area-51 m7700) and probably a few other vendors

Re:Laptops really for gaming?
Sager is the US seller of clevo notebooks in the US. They are the people who provide the notebooks to retailers such as Hypersonic, Alienware, and a few other retailers. Sager's direct-consumer tech support is admittedly pretty bad, but that's because they do their business through retailers, and prefer to do consumer tech support through them. (Besides, the retailers give 200 dollar or so discounts off of Sager's prices as is.)
I myself use a Sager NP9860 as my main workstation. It's simply the highest quality laptop I've ever used. Well worth the absurdly high price for the performance it gives. It's heavy as hell for a laptop, not meant to be portable, but I carry it around school and work all day as is. When the day's done, having a laptop that can play the latest games maxed out at 1680x1050 is fairly nice.
I eagerly await the release of the NP9750, which is an AMD-powered equivalent to the NP9890.
If you want to learn about notebooks, the best place to discuss them is going to be at NotebookForums . It has a large, active, friendly (providing you don't make fun of certain user's favorite retailers.) community willing to discuss just about anything about laptops. -
Re:Is this bad or good?
I'm not Dell bashing - they're the only company I'll use if I'm not building it myself. Just saying.
Dell is the worst. I repair them all day. You'd be better off buying a machine from the Home Shopping Channel. Seriously, if you're going to recommend a brand to someone, tell them to try Alienware. They're only a little more expensive. -
Re:AMD next?
Alienware does.

My thoughts
I recently discovered this, ErgoPod 500, which looks pretty awesome to me.
Along with The Perfect Chair.
Or maybe even, the Stance Angle Chair.
Not having any better idea, I'd probably go for an Alienware Area-51 ALX with NVIDIA SLI.
And given my background, I'd be focusing on revision control software - maybe BitKeeper, and backup of same.
And then of course use a unit testing framework from day one, and buy some books about coding - ranging from PeopleWare to Death March, from Effective C++ and Effective STL to The Dilbert Principle, from Design Patterns and Refactoring to Best Software I...
Oh, and UPS the whole damn thing. -
Also...
Here's the latest iPod non-killer. (Story here.)

RAID in Laptops
RAID in laptops is nothing new. This is already offered by Alienware in their Area-51m and MJ-12m lines as options. Yes, it ads weight. Yes it reduces battery life dramatically. Yes, it's worth it for mobile workstations that are usually plugged in and demand performance/uptime.
The only thing that is new here is that the technology will be more high integrated. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad idea. In notebooks this might be okay as it makes upgrades easier. But for those looking at this as something great for servers in the future I think you should look somewhere else. For servers, you typically look to offload work from the processor not give more work to it. Plus, RAID 0,1 have limited server applications. (web servers or low-end servers might use RAID 1...anything else is looking for RAID 5 if possible) -
Alienware already offers it

Re:What about for laptops?
Well let's stroll down to Alienware's shop...
Lucid Gaming
Armed with NVIDIA's latest GeForce Go 6800 ULTRA and ATI's latest Mobility RADEON X800 graphics modules, the Alienware Area-51m 7700 has the full bandwidth of PCI-Express x16 and 256MB of memory to handle even the most taxing applications and games. Matched to a brilliant 17" LCD, this system will redefine what the ultimate gaming experience should be.
So you see, if you have the $4000 that you want to put towards a good and portable gaming rig, then this machine is for you. :P -
Linux WON'T be affectedHow could Linux be affected by this? First, and foremost, OS X and most of its better software costs money. Linux and pretty much all of its software does not cost money.
I have an iBook. I like my iBook. i like my ibook because it allows me to write my books (using NeoOffice) at places other than my desk. But that's it. If I were to have to purchase all the equivalent software for my ibook that i use on my Linux desktop - I, well, I couldn't because I'm a starving artist.
So Linux won't suffer from OS X moving to x86 software. The same people that use Linux will continue to use Linux.
Besides - the reason a lot of people use OS X is because of the sexy hardware it runs on. x86 hardware (unless you're getting it from alienware or something) is just blah.
-
Re:Intel needs a show pony
Intel needs somebody to really show off their cutting edge stuff...which no normal PC maker will do.
Huh? What do you think the Dell XPS is? Or Alienware, for that matter?
Besides, unless Apple is planning to start updating their product line a lot faster than they currently do, their high end machines are going to fall behind pretty quickly in the fast paced PC world. -
Re:Good...
Alienware had one. Let me see if I can find it... I guess they do not have it anymore... but they do have P4 with Hyperthreading, and RAID 0 or 1... all in a laptop:
