Space Solar Power SatellitesIf you're going to process megatons of lunar regolith to extract small amounts of a fusion fuel that can't even be burned yet, why not just build space solar power satellites?
In the meantime you can set up fusion prize awards to incentivize development of the technologies necessary to burn He3 if you find it is economic.

Re:Why We Hate Electric
I never said batteries were unaffected by tempurature.
Direct quote:
EVERYTHING ON THE PLANET is affected by tempurature... That doesn't mean everything is affected just as seriously. I can't say what's at that link, but I can assure you, cold tempuratures have a much more serious effect on your engine than any decent batteries.
Your statement is just plain wrong. THE reason it is hard to start a car in the cold is the battery. Cold Cranking Amps are not listed on every car battery just for the hell of it. Temperature effects on your battery are THE dominating factor.
And the issue here is what makes it HARD TO START YOUR CAR.
No the issue is that an electric car won't be just hard to start, it will be hard to drive, period. Difficulty starting is a minor inconvenience compared to losing a large percentage of your range (and horsepower) just because it's cold out. If you need double the battery capacity to start your car in the winter months, it's not that big of a deal. Your standard car battery is already sized to account for that. If you need double the battery capacity to keep the same range during the winter months and your battery pack already weighs hundreds or even thousands of pounds, it's a HUGE problem.
This is the last troll of yours I'm going to even bother replying to.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. -

GNAA Launches Attack on Slashdot Parent CompanyGNAA Launches Attack on Slashdot Parent Company
Fremont, CaliforniaThe Holiday of Jew's Revenge, September 11th, was bloodied once again this year. Officials say Gay Nigger Association of America member Tar_Baby stole a Cessna jet from a nearby airfield and crashed it into Open Source Technology Group headquarters, completely demolishing the building, as well as crushing and incinerating everyone inside.
Audio logs recovered via the jet's black box portrayed a disturbing course of events onboard the plane. Passengers were heard screaming for their lives as the terrorist raped and killed the male members of the plane by what was thought to be rupturing their colons with a gigantic black dildo with nails punched out the sides, based on evidence collected at the scene.
Within minutes of the attack, GNAA officials telephoned major news networks claiming responsibility, and promised to continue their campaign of destruction as long as an Open Source movement still existed. This is believed to be the major tenet of the 'Gay Nigger Jihad', first mentioned months ago during GNAA's campaign against AOL.
This comes almost simultaneously after OSTG recently changed their name from the Open Source Development Network (OSDN), in attempt to distance itself from name long associated with failure, stupidity, zealotry, and Cowboyneal. It was also part of a last ditch effort to convince investors not to steal a Cessna and fly it into the headquarters themselves.
Update: A few hours after the crash, the rescue team found what is believed to be the only survivor. CmdrTaco was found in a coma inside OSTG basement, still firmly gripping his tiny cock. In his other hand, he was holding a photo of a muscular black male, signed by "Gary Niger of GNAA". CmdrTaco was rushed to a hospital, and his condition remains critical.

Space Solar Power SatellitesGiven the geopolitical pressure cooker over energy resources there is a lot to be said for Gerard K. O'Neill's proposal to use lunar materials to fabricate space solar power satellites. The Lagrange-point elevator could replace the mass driver in O'Neill's system and since the mass driver was the most problematic aspect of the proposal it may turn out that O'Neill's proposal just became a lot less risky.
An effect of O'Neill's proposal is the creation of space settlements which could house thousands of times the land area of the Earth from asteroidal materials alone. The creator of the space-settlement FAQ, Mike Combs, says in that FAQ to the question "Is space settlement a solution to the overpopulation problem?":
Probably not. No space transportation system we can imagine (although that might be a significant qualifier) could keep up with the number of babies being born.
This is ironic since O'Neill himself described just such a transportation system and projected depopulation of Earth to require an infrastructure not much larger than that supporting the commercial airlines. -

Re:trade secret != copyright
Trade secrets can be copyrighted. Authored works are copyrighted (author retains control over rights to copy) upon creation, and there is no requirement to publish the works.
You're probably thinking of patents, where publishing is required.
Here is a nice and concise description of patents, copyrights, and trade secrets. -
Re:Wow.
I'm sorry, but first impressions count. The first game I clicked through on this site was Harvest, in which the author has posted a very poorly designed page, on AOL for chrissake, asking for $15 for his game. WTF? I can get good games like Homeworld out of EB's bins for $5-10 now, and this pretentious wank wants $15 for his drivel when he can't even build a proper webpage?
So no, I don't feel obligated to pander to this particular dying game genre. These games may indeed have stunning little stories, but they reek of fan-fictionism. Some fan-fiction might be good, but in all honesty the majority of it is trash. So allowing an inferred connection between these games and fan-fiction is not helpful.
I understand that they might not be able to pull professional graphics out their hat, but without an objective standard that literally says 'This is crap', this little community is likely to drive away folks, like myself, who'd take one look at the poorest offerings and move on. The adventure game market is on its last legs, and without honest evaluations of its games, it might as well put a gun to its head. -
Painfully obvious example
As per gossip TV, Tara Reid recently had a wardrobe malfunction that is _clearly_ of great import. However, no reasonable google image searches can prvide the information I demand!

Gollumb rulers and np-complete problems
I'm no expert on np-complete problems, and this is literally an off-the-cuff idea, so feel free to shoot it down or run with it:
Someone once proved that np-complete problems map to each other. That is, if you solve one, you've solved them all. this page linked in the main story suggests that Golumb Rulers are "like" np complete problems. If it is indeed np complete, then maybe an efficient-but-suboptimal solution to the Golomb Ruler problem will map to any other np-complete problem.
The same link mentions cyclic difference sets as a means of producing very efficient Golumb rulers, at least up to n=150.
If this technique maps to other problems, like the travelling-salesman problem, then "practical" albeit not-quite-optimal solutions can be found relatively easily. If you are a traveling salesman, do you really care if your 100-stop route has a small amount of waste, if finding a better solution might take 10 years of cpu time?
Likewise, if there are other "not quite optimal" solutions to np-complete problems for n>150, perhaps these solutions can be applied to the Golumb ruler problem, to generate "good enough" rulers of longer lengths.
Of course, if the Golumb ruler problem doesn't map to the other problems, then "nevermind." -
Re:Such a thing as a "Complete" Golomb ruler?
There certainly would be such a Golomb ruler, but most likely it wouldn't be optimal. I wonder if any optimal rulers with more than 4 marks are "complete". They give an example for a 4 mark OGR which is "complete" (0-1-4-6). This is all speculation on my part, IANAM. For all I know, all OGR's contain a "complete" representation.

Re:Must...overcome...AOL...prejudice...
AOL has a long history of suits against spammers. See this list of litigation they've filed.
Pity they often place themselves on the wrong side of legislative battles, though. They were a driving force behind the CAN-SPAM Act, which guarantees the right to send unsolicited, commercial, bulk email. -
If only AOL would use SPF or S-ID!
For many months now, I've published SPF records for all domains under my management. And every day, we get AOL trying to bounce messages allegedly from non-existant addresses within those domains... If AOL were really using SPF to reject spoofed mail as it arrives at their gateways as they've said they were going to, they'd have never accepted the spoofed messages, and I'd knock about 3% off my server load...

Re:No differnces? The Supreme Court didn't "legalize abortion", it ruled that the states can't criminalize it.
Actually, the Supreme court did legalize abortion. In Roe v Wade (1973) the court determined that individual state abortion statutes violated Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment (right to privacy). Here is the ruling.Notice line 3: "State criminal abortion laws, like those involved here, that except from criminality only a life- saving procedure on the mother's behalf without regard to the stage of her pregnancy and other interests involved violate the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which protects against state action the right to privacy, including a woman's qualified right to terminate her pregnancy. Though the State cannot override that right, it has legitimate interests in protecting both the pregnant woman's health and the potentiality of human life, each of which interests grows and reaches a "compelling" point at various stages of the woman's approach to term."

Police murdered Vicki Snelgrove
Police murdered Vicki Snelgrove
RIP Vicki Snelgrove 1982-2004 Shot and killed by untrained, trigger-happy police with permission from the commissioner>> EXPLAIN THIS ONE O'TOOL.
"He turned around and immediately fired his gun leveled at head level," Anderson said. "He fired two rounds in extremely quick succession, and the girl immediately dropped. All her friends were around her. They were screaming. And people got very angry at that point."
The officers carrying the less-lethal weapons were under the command of Deputy Superintendent Robert E. O'Toole Jr., who did not return a call seeking comment. O'Toole, who is unrelated to the police commissioner, heads the department's tactical operations.
"And 99 percent of those kids in Kenmore Square [Wednesday] night were innocent bystanders who just wanted to have a good time," the police commissioner said. "That 1 percent of thugs caused the problem that forced us to take the less-lethal measures, and obviously this horrible tragedy resulted."

Humans are very very scary...> An ape capable of killing lions ran away after a peek--that must have been one ugly face!
Most apes are curious creatures , the ones which are more intelligent are more cautious observers than curious imitators.
A strange creature that walks on two feet, carries a metal paddle that kills , and kills adult elephants is a creature to be afraid of (oh, I'm talking about the average african explorer).
Truthfully speaking , any sufficently intelligent species which closely observes humans in actions have everything to be afraid of them . Lions are comparitively innocous compared to a human . Even tigers turn tail and run from humans looking at them (or relatively good facsimilies of a face).
It takes brains, learning and experience to figure that out . -
AOL is good/evil...AOL buys Netscape. AOL is good!
AOL sticks with IE in a deal with the devil! AOL is evil.
AOL buys Nullsoft. Definitely good!
AOL axes Gnutella, Justin leaves for greener pastures. AOL, clearly evil.
AOL uses wxWindows in AOL Communicator. AOL is obviously good!
AOL releases a branded version of IE. AOL, definitely evil.
Look, AOL is a big fucking company. They are going to do lots of good and evil things, because there are lots of people making decisions at different levels of the company. Do they have a coherent browser strategy? Not really. Have they tromped on the corpse of Netscape? Definitely.
There's finally a good browser based on Gecko (Firefox) and they've basically abandoned the Netscape browser. But AOL is just dealing with the reality of who their user base is and what they expect (the trailing edge of the Internet revolution, if you will - these people think IE is great, and will think a better IE is even better). And for all I know there may still be deals in place keeping them working with MS on the browser front - for a long time they were locked into that deal to get pre-installed AOL with Windows. Also, I wouldn't be shocked to see an AOL-branded or Netscape-branded version of Firefox come down the pipe 4 or 5 months from now too (post 1.0, of course).
As for the rest of us, let's just enjoy the cool shit that AOL occasionally produces, and continue to ignore the rest of the crap that will invariably come out of them. -

Re:RIAA- superfluous?
And who would pay for all the marketing of the music?
Your right! It would be so tragic if radio stations simply played the music that attacted the most listeners, rather than taking payola under the table.
When a band gets an album cover on the front page of iTunes, do you think that's because it's good? No, it's because the record company paid for "placement"
Good point. It would be so tragic if iTunes were actually to put the best music on their front page, to attract more sales.
just like they do with the big posters in the windows of Tower Records. That stuff doesn't happen for free.
True, true. The music industry would clearly collapse if Tower Records were to try to earn the trust of their customers and to attract more sales, by, you know, trying to figure out what music people will like best and making good music reccomendations on their own posters.
And if we if we peer into the depths of depravity, people might even find music information in the internet, or even (shudder) from their friends! A disaster of biblical proportions!

Re:Here's The Question
This page argues (most of the way down) that a series of prizes, for a grand total of $5.6 billion in prize money, could bring the cost of access to space to $10,000 a person. $5.6 billion sounds like a lot, but over a few decades it's something that could be affordable by an agency like NASA. Hopefully, Bigelow's prize is the first such step.

Re:US votes?never said mentaly paralyzed, or even paralyzed, just frozen for 30 min. theres a diffrence.
Riiiiight.
KERRY: I was in the Capitol. We'd just had a meeting -- we'd just come into a leadership meeting in Tom Daschle's office, looking out at the Capitol. And as I came in, Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid were standing there, and we watched the second plane come in to the building. And we shortly thereafter sat down at the table and then we just realized nobody could think, and then boom, right behind us, we saw the cloud of explosion at the Pentagon. And then word came from the White House, they were evacuating, and we were to evacuate, and so we immediately began the evacuation.
And more:
If you go back to the timeline of the events of that morning, you will realize that about thirty-six minutes elapsed between the time the second plane hit the World Trade Center, at 9:02:54am, and the third plane hit the Pentagon, at 9:38am. During this time, Kerry and others (like the rest of the country) sat in a daze, realizing that "nobody could think." As Grassroots.org points out in its E-mail, "For 40 minutes, Sen. John Kerry, a sitting member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, sat in a room with Senate Leader Tom Daschle."
And finally:It's actually worse for Kerry than you imply. Consider the following: "And then word came from the White House, they were evacuating, and we were to evacuate, and so we immediately began the evacuation."
So, their reaction was stunned inaction for 40 minutes, then they received instructions FROM THE WHITE HOUSE and they reacted.
Hm...so their reaction was to sit in their butts and wait for Bush to figure out what to do? Not exactly inspiring, is it?
That is quite a contrast to what Senator Kerry said he would have done:"Had I been reading to children and had my top aide whispered in my ear, 'America is under attack,' I would have told those kids very politely and nicely that the president of the United States had something that he needed to attend to -- and I would have attended to it," Kerry told the Unity conference of minority journalists in response to a question about what he would done.
Maybe he would have, but thats not how I would bet.

Re:Leaving the Garden of Eden
Space is pretty big, as you correctly point out, and pretty much none of what we've seen of it so far makes for a good destination for any settlers. I posted a link to this elsewhere in this thread, so I apologize for repeating myself, but orbital colonies offer one such destination... we just have to build them. The technology to do so isn't anything that we don't already have. You might want to consider reading Gerrard O'Neill's The High Frontier. It's a solution that has some issues - mainly, the startup cost of his particular vision is enormous - but a more staged approach starting a lot smaller seems quite possible, once the cost of access to space gets down to something people can afford.
-
Re:Leaving the Garden of EdenMany people believe orbital colonies are the way to go (and many don't - establishing an initial presence on Mars would likely be easier in the short term, but wouldn't gain you nearly as much in the long term). But just because there aren't any planets to move to, doesn't mean there's no place in the solar system we could go, at least after just a few years of construction with present-day technology.
Life in space would be hard for a few years, but it could be a lot better with time.

Re:Hypothetically speaking...Man, I was worried for a second there glancing at that FAQ, until I got here:

The Springfield Effect is the name given to the phenomenon by which every place named Springfield is hard-linked in hyperspace to every other place of this name. In other words, there is only one place named Springfield, but it is "linked" to various locations in the world."
Sadly, creationist FAQs aren't quite so amusing. (Well, okay, there's this one.)

Re:Deal with it.
you and your community can either work to educate/debunk those 'disruptive users', one troll at a time
You can't reason with trolls. They feed off of *any* attention you give them. Words are fuel to them, no matter what the words say.
You can't appeal to their emotions. Often this is becuase they only see you as a digital abstraction, like an NPC in a game. They do not see a person on the other side.
The only way to deal with trolls is to limit your reaction to reminding others not to respond to trolls.
When you stop responding to them, they will go away. This is a lot easier said than done. The problem is getting *everyone else* to stop responding to them as well. Trolls are great social engineers at manipulating people into responding, and it can be a daunting task to convince everyone to just ignore them.
It's kind of like that Simpsons episode where all the giant anthropomorphic advertisments started destroying the town, and the only way to make them stop was "just don't look". -

Microsoft
Perhaps the two companies above purchased advertising to appear on Slashdot in the past....
Properly written news stories are primarily news first and advertising a serendipidous second. The rule of thumb is that 'if your press release reads like an ad, it needs to be rewritten' and that good press releases 'answer the who, what, when, where, why, and how questions'.
Also, the goal of press releases is to inform. The goal of advertising is to persuade.
Which do you prefer? Information or manipulation?
Slashdot's ad rates are $CALL--you have to contact a marketing representative to get them.
