Seriously though, I think Tim's article on the whole issue covered this pretty well (currently on the front page of CAD). -
You Americans Need to Lighten up
One, it isn't in the US. 2 you need to lighten up, sure racism exists, but its a video game advert and guess what, in another on it shows the black person on top of the white... I don't see what the big deal is personally, but I guess that is how I was raised, with quite a few good friends who are of different races. Check out The CAD newspose for an insightful post on the subject, as well as the pictures of the different ones, including prior art for a DS

Dont' OverreactI'm an avid gamer, a minor, and a defender of gaming as an artistic medium. I think we shouldn't strike out against everything that suggests that games can be unsuitable to kids. There really are some games out there that are pretty awful.
I don't suggest that these games be banned at all, but take a look at the Clinton bill. All it does is ban the sale of M-rated games to kids. Parents can still buy these games for them (so there goes all the "I'll parent the way I want to" arguments) and it even uses the industry's voluntary rating system. It's arguably more lenient than the system for movies (parents must be in the theatre for an R-rated movie but don't have to play an M-rated game with their kid). Tim Buckley, the author of the Ctrl+Alt+Del webcomic, suggested this solution himself, and he's one of the most outspoken defenders of games.
I just don't see how this backlash on the boards is helping our cause. The studies proposed can only help, provided that they're done correctly, and the Clinton bill, though associated with some strong rhetoric, takes the reasonable middle ground. Shouldn't we, the gamers, be rushing to take that middle ground too?

Re:Poetry is the reason for slowness
And wasting their time on lame fat/suit vs hip/cool commercials is another reason why.
You ain't kidding.
I know a number of people who were thinking of getting an Apple who were turned away by those commercials. Between the claims about viruses (which they have anti-virus for already), the claim about bundled software (Which they've already got free (gratis mostly, some libre, not that they know or care about the difference) software equivalents), and overall whiney arrogance potrayed in the commercials, they decided that their Windows computer was already good enough, and Mac really didn't do anything new. -

Not sure but...
I'm not sure why it's so popular. I just finished a four hour session downstairs working on it too. But I think part of it has to deal with the friggin two year delay. As Ctrl+Alt+Del put it.

There's A Blocklist Available from Tim Buckley
Tim Buckley of the Ctrl-Alt-Del webcomic made a blocklist available to prevent gold farming sites showing up in google ads.
http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/news.php?i=1011
" A few days ago I talked a bunch about gold farming and its adverse effect on MMO's. This caused the google ads on our page to specifically display the gold selling ads in their inventory, so we could effectively block them.
We've now compiled the list we're using it and made it available to you. If you run a website that used google ads, feel free to use this list to help block these gold farmers. If you frequent a website that uses google ads, email them this list and ask them to use it to block gold farmers.
Like I said, I doubt gold farming will ever disappear, but every one less customer makes the business less profitable for them."
I found this rather helpful. -

Re:Less and less relevant?
You forgot a few.
16. KDE formats your hard drive every time you press F1.
17. X11 causes your monitor to emit sterilizing X rays.
18. There hasn't been a release of Duke Nukem Forever for Linux.
19. Linux soesn't run an a Zuse Z1.
20. Every time you make a typo on the shell thee men in Chuck Norris masks come and kick you in the crotch.
21. Linux writes itself into the sound card's ROM so you can never listen to music again.
22. OpenOffice is only available in Afrikaans, Gaelic and Klingon.
23. Linux also doesn't run on interocitors, even if they're connected to a volterator!
24. Linus Torvalds is Doctor Doom. Tux is Megatron. Richard Stallman is SHODAN.
25. There's no working implementation of DWIM for Linux.
26. My shoelace is open and Linux did nothing to prevent that.
27. I'm hungry.
28. My cat's breath smells like cat food.
After dealing with these additional 13 thngs, anyone would believe Chef Brian that there's no enough place for two crawfish in this town. -

Hello Everybody
Maddox has managed it for more than five years now because "giving away content" wasn't his source of income. Now he's set to make a boatload of cash from various ventures including a book and a comic.
See also every commercial webcomic. Some go for a pure related-merchandise-for-sale approach, such as ctrl alt del, others push a little harder, like questionablecontent selling clothes that appear in comics.
And if your site doesn't fit into an easy category for making money, but does have traffic, I have three words for you: Ads by Goooooooogle. I hate these ads, but they work.
As for corporations and such, and their continued profit from the internet, I have nothing but a big Fuck You for them. The only area this discussion is even relevant to big business is newspapers. The answer for them in most cases is advertising. Others try to lock in their content. These are the ones who miss the point. Screw them. The third case is the BBC - no need to profit from the internet. This is where I go for my news. -

Re:In other words..
I think both of us are relying on anecdotal experience. Most of my friends (myself included), had little to no interest in the original Xbox. Microsoft had no experience in the console business, so we were all in a "wait and see" attitude. This time around, it's actually different, and a few of my friends have actually gotten 360s at launch (or at least tried to).
I find it hard to believe there's LESS demand for the 360, now that Microsoft has proven themselves, in some degree. Certainly from reading all the gaming press (from game magazines to your popular web comics), it seems like there's a lot more demand for the 360 than there ever was for the original Xbox. *shrugs*
I tried looking for actual launch numbers for the original console, but haven't been able to find it so far. That's probably the best way to compare releases and things like demand. If someone could find them, that would be helpful ... -
Re:Does any one have a link to what JT said?
I believe JT posted a reply on Gamingpolitics.com - he appears to frequent the site.
I actually came across this story earlier today via Ctrl-Alt-Del. You may want to check out http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/news.php?i=969 and follow the links.
If that's a true response (i.e. not someone masquerading as Mr Thompson) then he shows an astounding lack of human compassion and a worringly sociopathic streak..... -
Re:We're Apple
I respectfully disagree. Whatever Sony does is necessary. Necessary to protect corporate profits and d@mn the consumer in the process, since the true pirates are the ones who actually have bought our product in the first place!
Did you follow my link? That's exactly the attitude the "Sony exec" displays in the comic, as evidenced by the following quote from it:
"Everybody wears pants! We're Sony! Fuck pants! "
Side note:Ctrl-Alt-Del is a great comic, for anyone who somehow missed it.
Look at Jobs. He even sells DRM (FairPlay) as a good thing.
Well, DRM is a good thing from his prospective since iTunes wouldn't have had the confidence(and thus the back catalogs) of the record labels without it, and for all intents and purposes it is really easy to remove for the consumer. Not that I agree that DRM is a good thing, that's for sure.

Hire ex-EB/Gamestop employees. Anyone who has worked there and is a decent person will know exactly what's wrong with the company. They'll probably know more about games than random people off the street. Use this.

Re:To infinity and beyond
I readed CAD until april or so, then it just bored me.
Lets give him the benefit of doubt about Tim not reading PA before working on CAD. But, he already mentions PA on the fourth comic he did, and some of the even earlier comics have some PA flair to them.
I am too lazy to search through their archives (the archives of both sites are too clumsy). But CAD has made a strip spoofing Macintosh ads, after PA did the same. Also, CAD has a couple of guys who are supposed to represent the first and second player on a game. PA also did this before. The animated piece of hardware (Divx and the Xbox on CAD) is also a similar idea.
I think this is more than just coincidence. -

What to do with Mr ThompsonWhat really irks me is that everyone is getting very worked up over Mr Thompson. I've heard him say that "if I really am crazy, then you'd just ignore me".
Which is the strange thing. We are getting very worked up over him. What happens when somebody posts something inflammatory, trollish or vulgar here on Slashdot? We just ignore it and get on with our lives. However, it seems to me that this usually stable mindset goes right out of the window when it comes to Mr Thompson, and he's been feeding the furnace of publicity with all the hate emails, comments, and other statements made by the people who can't just see this guy for the common (albeit rich and infamous) troll he is.
I've even seen this behaviour normally level-headed people like Tim Buckley (who made a quite threatening message in comic form here, I'm sure that if Thompson had heard of it he'd be splattering it everywhere). He says (in essence) that he's got his right to do it if he wants (and yes he does), just like Jack Thompson can argue against video games, but I really don't know how this is going to shift him from the screen at all.
In any case, I don't suppose he'll be here any longer than New Year's, unless something spectacular happens (maybe something like the Whitehouse being invaded by people dressed up like Unreal Tournament bots - it's Real Tournament now, mofo!).

Re:Finally!
Not just Sony music, Sony playstation has equally rediculous terms of use, if the internet rumour mill can be believed.
This Article, and others, suggest the playstation3 will be released infected with DRM as bad as the music media.
If the rumours are true, there will be no second hand sales of ps3 games, no playing your games at your friends home, no rentals from the video store, and consumers will be blessed with the pleasure of renewing of content licenses after a fixed number of hours of game play.
This article presents Sony's position nicely. -

Re:Truly Revolutionary
There have already been enough disappointments (Xbox360 Core... What are you referring to here?
This sums it up pretty nicely. In a nutshell, the disappointment is a version of the Xbox 360 a) without a hard drive, b) without the promised "everything's wireless out of the box" vision (wired controller in the core package, though the console will still support wireless controllers if you feel like spending $80), and c) without the promised "everything's HD out of the box" vision (no component video, DVI, VGA, or SCART cables in the Core box, which means no HD output for you unless you feel like spending $30). Overall, the biggest disappointment is the demotion of the hard drive from "integral standard piece of equipment" to "very big memory card". I'm sure I'll get over it eventually, but it's a little painful to take a step backwards from the current Xbox design in that area.
