The problem with your theory is that the newer technologies in renewable energy tend to work rather efficiently on a micro producer scale, and thus would serve to reduce the amount of control that any one company or small group of companies can have over the energy market.

Electricity from solar energy can be that are on the market today.

Biodiesel takes very little equipment to produce in your garage from waste vegatable oil (big plastic drum, litmus paper and/or phenolthalene solution, hydrometer, measuring devices, etc) for pennies. No new technology need be implemented for the use of biodiesel

Natural gas can be efficiently produced on farms and by municipalities using biological processes.

Wind can be harnessed for electric production by windmills ranging in size from small ones that will power the lights in your garage (can be home-made without too much difficulty) to giant towers that can power several city blocks.

The truth is that petrochemical and energy corps are interested in maintaining the status quo, and will shun any technological advances that threaten to decentralize the energy markets. OTOH, the same corporations are showing considerable interest in implementing large scale renewable energy projects that allow market control to remain in their hands, such as large scale wind farms and hydrocarbon fuels produced from poultry processing wastes. The problem is that many people think that these companies are somehow attached to the idea of fossil fuels, when the truth is that they do not care where the money and power come from, as long as it remains in thier own hands.

(btw, the "hydrogen energy economy" is a red herring. It takes more energy to seperate the hydrogen from water than can be gained by burning or through fuel cells. The companies know this, and stand to profit from subsidies for building hydrogen plants, and from producing the electricity that will be used to seperate the hydrogen from water.)

Video games should only be played by true professionals, there is just such a high level of danger involved.

Anybody know if there are any plans to adapt Life the Universe and Everything to the big screen? I always wondered what ultra-violent and infradead looked like...

There are, as far as I know, no plans so far to make other Hitchhiker's Guide movies besides *the* the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie.

And the article mentioned how long the plans for that movie existed without ever getting past the planning stage: a decade.

Luckily, the project seems to be getting somewhere. The cast is known, and Slashdot even covered an interview that the screenwriter had with himself.

Still, that movie is far from ready yet. So don't get your hopes up about a sequel movie any time soon.

Buzz Aldrin should have spotted that something was up when he asked him about the conspiricy theorys of the moon being fake.

Ali G was lucky. Buzz was accosted in 2002 by a man who had done documentaries about the moon landing being fake. Angry about all the on-camera antics, Buzz punched the man in the face. No charges were filed.

Whether or not he was truly a civilian, of course, remains to be seen. But given that he voluntarily surrendered in order to ``clear things up''? I give him the benefit of the doubt. At least enough to refrain from beating him to death.

Even if you ignore the 1998 State Department Indictment charging an Iraq/Al Qaeda relationship, and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who formed the Al Qaeda terrorist group Anasr al-Islam within Iraq, and Abu Wa'el, who is a known Al Qaeda terrorist who was on the Baghdad payroll, and the fact that Mohammed Atta was trained by Abu Nidal in Baghdad. Even if you ignore all of these facts, military action in Iraq was still justified, and very necessary.

We declared war on terrorism. Iraq has been on the State Department list of States Sponsoring Terrorism for over 20 years. Saddam supported the following terrorist organizations: Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, Kurdistan Workers' Party, Abu Nidal, Lebanese Hizballah, HAMAS, and the Palestine Islamic Jihad. Russia is now telling us that Iraq was planning an attack against the US. I don't how it could be any more clear. We are fighting against terrorism and terrorist threats against us, not just Osama Bin Laden. Iraq clearly displayed a support for terrorism over the past two decades. If we did not eliminate this threat, we would be missing a crucial element in the war on terrorism. I'm glad that the leader of this country can see the threat, and has the balls to act on it without fear of political recourse.

Here's an article from ABC news (link stolen from earlier in the discussion) which talks about the negative votes for Gore among other things. The negative total was given by an electronic voting machine from a company that was bought by Diebold shortly thereafter. So to say it was Diebold machines that provided the drasticly wrong results might be considered wrong, or at least misleading, but i think the idea is the same since Diebold seems to have become synonymous with electronic voting.

I remember the problems here in California when some precincts reported results of several times the number of registered voters. The orignal poster may be confused about whether it happened during the special election for the recall or the normal election a few months later, (i think it was the second election, but i'm not sure either) but regardless you're just nitpicking.

I'm still waiting for "conventional" high-definition programming to become mainstream. Sure, we now have consumer level HD cameras but the local news broadcasts are still SD. Alias is in HD, and Jennifer Garner makes my HDTV purchase worth it (don't tell my wife), but every commercial is still in SD.

The FCC-mandated transition to digital broadcasts probably won't help make HD content mainstream either. Stations may be broadcasting all digital, but they'll still be broadcasting Gilligan's Island reruns at SD or (gasp) upconverted to 1080i.

UHDV technology may be the future, but the expense of producing content won't make it mainstream. Oh, and Slashdot covered this before.

I was a career NCO in the US Army, I recieved the outright discrimination that the compassionate liberals bestowed on the military in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Their problem of their political leadership is that little things like the Constitution and the Bill of Rights have been standing in their way, though the work of dismantling is in progress. In the above, "conservative" and Christian mean "Religious Right"... those are the only people the Christian Reconstructionists recognize as real fellow Christians. Every one of the last several Presidents, Democratic and Republican have been "professing Christians". But except for George W Bush, not their kind of Christian.

The average vacation for an American worker is two weeks. Rarely three weeks. Over in Socialist Europe people tend to have something on the order of four to six weeks paid vacation. Don't forget the strict EU rules about overtime which would put a serious cramp on the capitalist machine which is the United States of America. Americans on average work 350 more hours than their European counterparts. France, everyone's favorite whipping boy, has 11 public holidays, a minimum of five weeks paid vacation and a thirty five hour work week. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an American in his or her first year on the job gets 8.1 days of paid vacation on average.
Americans work very hard to the point of slaving for their corporate overlords, who I would like to be the first to welcome. This is in a country where the biggest joke is about lazy union workers! Heck, most union contracts don't even get close to their European counterparts in regards to benefits and time off.
