Re:French nit-picking
No, it means "new"
At least I can blame Google translating services for this one, but maybe I should have just written on what I really know about... I mean, my message seems to have more errors than the one I was nit-picking on, that's some pretty humbling experience ;) -
Re:Proving yet again....
It isn't entirely uselsss. "skipping stones" was the tech behind the bouncing bombs in WWII that the Allies used to destroy German dams to deprive their industry of water. A couple weeks ago there was a great documentary about it on t.v. but i can't find a link - wuz on discovery or history channel i think - might have been one of those "dangerous jobs" shows. The bombs would bounce across the water & timed so that they would sink when they got up close to the dam and then detonate deep under water against the structure. Unfortunately, my words do not do the program justice.

political views support free trade
Bull.
They support protectionism at every opportunity. Just check out the Canada Softwood Lumber Dispute. Time after time International agencies have condemmed US actions, yet they continue imposing unilateral duties. This has dragged on for twenty-two years
Here are other disputes. -

Re:EULA
perhaps the liscences have not been terminated.
Sasktel told me that they were terminating the liscences, but hell, they have been wrong before.
what i'm pretty sure of, is that they CAN terminate the liscense. here's something i felt lucky about (windows 98 eula)
Termination. Without prejudice to any other rights, Microsoft may terminate this EULA if you fail to comply with the terms and conditions of this EULA. In such event, you must destroy all copies of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT and all of its component parts. * * * 4. COPYRIGHT. All title and intellectual property rights in and to the SOFTWARE PRODUCT (including but not limited to any images, photographs, animations, video, audio, music, text, and "applets" incorporated into the SOFTWARE PRODUCT), the accompanying printed materials, and any copies of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT are owned by Microsoft or its suppliers. All title and intellectual property rights in and to the content which may be accessed through use of the SOFTWARE PRODUCT is the property of the respective content owner and may be protected by applicable copyright or other intellectual property laws and treaties. This EULA grants you no rights to use such content. All rights not expressly granted are reserved by Microsoft.
including, unless otherwise stated negativeley somewhere where i missed, the right of microsoft to cancel specific induvidual's ability to hold liscences, and if they have cancelled it, or modified the agreement , you must surely be in violation of the licence by using it, and must terminate. or something. -
Re:Cheap But Won't Be Durable
Top-name doesn't mean quality. Not anymore, anyway. I had an Apex 3201 that only died on me because my house was hit by lightning. Until then, it provided me with over 1 year and a half of flawless service (I watch movies, not TV, if that helps you visualize how much I used it). When it died, I couldn't buy Apex in my city anymore. So I replaced it with a Panasonic (can't remember the model, but it was a progressive). Less than 6 months later, the Panasonic was dead. This is not uncommon with Panasonic DVD players - do a google on "H07 panasonic". If you're too lazy to google, in short H07 is the error displayed on the little display on the front of the player when all of a sudden you can't watch movies. It means the motor won't spin, and Panasonic recommends a replacement DVD player (but will fix it for $75 plus shipping). Ir seems to affect every model of Panasonic DVD player.

Re:Just bear through it.
2.5 litres is not a large quantity though. Sure some 'health experts' (non-registered doctors) advocate drinking 5 litres a day (i agree this is misinformation unless there are special circumstances, like running a marathon in the Sahara everyday). 2.5 litres is around the 8 glasses avocated by your local doctor, your local hospital, your local government, your federal government, the UN.
You don't need to run a Marathon in the desert to require 5 litres of water a day.
I tend to weight myself before and after my runs in order to see how much I just lost. I can easily loose 2 or 3 pounds within a 3 hour training run despite drinking during that period.
(and where are the side-effects from drinking water?)
Try hypnatremia very well documented in Endurance athletes.
Go Google for more info. -
A coffee a day
I would get a migrane just looking at something with caffeine in it. Building up a tolerence to caffeine took a bit of work, but now I get the headache without the coffee. There are even some benefits to caffeine, so moderation is the word. Drink tea instead of coffee or soda.

Do you know whas Bishounen is?
Go and see what Google shows you.
Yea, Bishounen are guys who are feminine. If you study any Japanese culture, you'll see that bishounen are quite popular. The same way bishoujo are popular. Women have many tastes, and women's sexaulity is a little freer in Japan -- there are more women who like to watch 2 men togther, for example. Are you a guy? Do you like watching 2 women get it on? Why?
Japan makes a lot of video games, Japan likes bishoujo and bishounen. This is why you see lots in video games (look at Guilty Gear XX sometime).
Of course, you could always take a gander at US character design. It reflects the culture just the same way -- all bulgy guys and women with impossible measurements! -
Re:unelected? You can check the regional news sources. I would start at news.google.ca and the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) news websites. You can also watch some CBC news broadcasts on News World International. This is available on some digital cable and satellite systems (DirecTV 366).
I always go to the regional news sources when i'm interested in what is going on. While AP/Reuters wire copy that appears at various sites are interesting, and RSS is making syndication of articles much more common, It's always important to "go to the source" as much as possible.
I suspect this whole "unelected" thing is likely political spin created by the parody website. It sounds like he was elected at something similar to a caucus in November (gleaned from skimming this). While this may not represent the "Direct" democracy that exists in the US, that's not the system that is in use in Canada. Not everywhere is using a Presidental system similar to the US, it sounds like Afghanistan is going to end up with a Parliamentary System. Nothing wrong with the other systems as much as they are not liked by the Americans.

Rambling Post:From the article, it sounds as if it's a certain card that seems to be having problems - if it doesn't work for you, well, you should have backed up your kernel before trying. I have no sympathy for people who are *going* to say 'I can't even get X to start!'.
Another poster mentioned that someone has already built 2.6.0
.run files - that's cool, but I have no reason to change my *stable* system. Maybe next week when I'm bored.Reading though this thread I've seen people extole the virtues of ATI and slam Nvidia. One particular poster said (s)he loves h(er/is) 9800. The first Google I get on this card shows a price of $299.00 US. I don't know about anyone else, but I think this is a *total* waste of money. I upgraded my last video card from a TNT2 (32MB) when I couldn't install Unreal Tournament 2003. Time to upgrade. Picked up a GeForce4 MX440. $99.00 CAN. I bought this card for one reason: Nvidia had drivers for Linux - and as a recent Linux convert, let me tell you, this is good news. Cudos to Nvidia - they'll get my $$ when it's time to upgrade again, and I'll get a card that's equivalent to the 299US card for 99CAN.

Do we have to give up "Niggle" too?
Check the etymology. Niggard and Niggle have nothing to do with Nigger. By your argument, we can't use Niggle either, because it might "sound" like a racist epithet? I also find it funny that someone (you) who has a problem with the way others use language, use it so badly. Are capitals difficult? Do you know how to use it's/its?
You also have a problem with logic. You say the thought of its racial sound didn't cross your mind, yet that's what concerns you: are you assuming that all "average" black people don't know the difference between Nigger and Niggardly? Who's the racist here?
From an etymological dictionary:
niggard - 1366, nygard, the suffix suggests Fr. origin (cf. dastard), but the root word is probably related to O.N. hnoggr "stingy," from P.Gmc. *khnauwjaz; related to O.E. hneaw "stingy, niggardly," which did not survive in M.E.
nigger - 1786, earlier neger (1568, Scot. and northern England dialect), from Fr. negre, from Sp. negro (see Negro). From the earliest usage it was "the term that carries with it all the obloquy and contempt and rejection which whites have inflicted on blacks." But as black inferiority was at one time a near universal assumption in Eng.-speaking lands, the word in some cases could be used without insult. More sympathetic writers late 18c. and early 19c. seem to have used black (n.) and, after the American Civil War, colored person. Also applied by Eng. settlers to dark-skinned native peoples in India, Australia, Polynesia. The reclamation of the word as a neutral or positive term in black culture, often with a suggestion of "soul" or "style," is attested first in the Amer. South, later (1968) in the Northern, urban-based Black Power movement. Variant niggah attested from 1925, usually in situations where blacks use the word; without the -h it is attested from 1969. Slang phrase nigger in the woodpile attested by 1800; "A mode of accounting for the disappearance of fuel; an unsolved mystery" [R.H. Thornton, "American Glossary," 1912]. Nigger heaven, "the top gallery in a (segregated) theater" first attested 1878 in ref. to Troy, N.Y. " 'You're a fool nigger, and the worst day's work Pa ever did was to buy you,' said Scarlett slowly. ... There, she thought, I've said 'nigger' and Mother wouldn't like that at all." [Margaret Mitchell, "Gone With the Wind," 1936]
niggle - 1599, possibly from a Scand. source (cf. Norw. dial. nigla "be busy with trifles"), perhaps related to source of niggard.
Should we also tell anyone with the name Nygard that they need to change it, or at least shouldn't utter it?
Next time you're wrong, just admit it, or shut up. -

Re:web page irony
Well, especially when it's been slashdotted. Here's a google cache hit to part of his writings.
I agree that it doesn't look to be easy to search around, at least when all you have is an URL to go on (http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/200x/2003/07/30 /OnSearchTOC) and Google to find reachable material. I'm also not too sure about using dates as folder names but that's just a personal thing: I think Tim Berners Lee recommended it at one point in an article "Cool URI's don't Change". He does recommend using "Latest" or some such instead of the creation date in a URI, though, if "there is no reason for the persistence of the URI to outlast the magazine." It might make things easier to search for though, at least if you know when it was created: if the URIs aren't changing then you won't have tons of broken links. -

Re:The problem is...You are right. It is difficult. Understanding syntax and semantics without a proper context is impossible for humans, nevermind computers. I looked into these problems for a thesis several years ago and focused most of my attention on this idea:
Link Grammar. (Google Cache since their page isn't responding. )
I don't remember all the details, but it is basically a program which parses sentences and links all the parts, given a dictionary of rules. For instance, it show which noun links to which verb, hence Link Grammar.
After getting involved with this I realized how insanely complicated it is to program a computer to understand text that it reads. Machine learning is about the only way this can happen since it has to learn volumes of context surrounding language that we take for granted.

Re:ISP's need to block egress port 25!!
In the past, RBL-type lists worked great. These days, about 70-75% of all of our incoming spam comes from *unique dynamic hosts*, mostly from cable modems. The quantity is drastically increasing every day.

Re:Still Not Real Clear on Design Patterns...
So is a Design Pattern just a clearly defined common problem and a general, language-independent, algorithm for solving the problem?
Remove "clearly defined." Sometimes moving from the problem to the pattern is not clear, but going from the pattern to the problem should be clear.
Change "algorithm" to "model."

Tropical fish in fresh water
What I would like to see is tropical/salt water fish engineered to live in fresh water tanks. Salt water tanks are fricken hard to take care of. Hard and expensive to start. Salt water fish can be very nice to have, and are generally MUCH more colourfull than fresh water fish.
The pictures of these fish..kind of neet I guess, but it really still looks like a boring fish.
Google images gives you the general idea.
If you could get fish like this in a easy to maintain fresh-water tank, it would be a great jump for joe-shmoes like me wanting to have a nice fish tank without the hassle of trying get a salt-water tank going.

Re:I never used the word to describe peopleHey, I was nit-picking a point, and I recognized it, (notice the 'anal retentive' prefix) needless to say, I wasn't expecting the torrent of response (not complaining -- just surprised).
I agree that 'evil' is something of an over-arching word, and we would be well served by more specific terms. People like Bush prefer 'evil' because it is so vague that it is open to repeated re-definition -- especially as each previous definition is exposed as fraudulent.
And -- no, the less psycho implementations of Islam are not hard on women and repressive. Islam was, in it's time, revolutionary in terms of giving women more rights and freedoms than they had at the time.
I dated a girl who had converted to Islam. She didn't seem very repressed by it (I'd say that she had more issues about being bi and islamic than being female).
In North America, we have a very recent history of oppressing women almost as much as the worst of Islam. My mother became an Optometrist in the late '50s, and I remember reading letters where she had to deal with the seriously mysogenic heads of the optometry association who wanted to deny her her license despite glowing reports from her examiners. It really wasn't until the last generation or so that women were expected to do anything more than raise babies and be subservient to their husbands.
It's not Islam that opresses people, it's the various cultures. There are still portions of the US bible belt, where you'd have a very hard time with your 'good christian' neighbours if they found out that you were running autopr0n. There are, in fact, states where public nudity is can still (in theory) get you life in prison.
For more on that point, drop by TERA (Topfree Equal Rights Assoc.) for more examples.
In the other direction, I have one older friend who describes secretaries being assigned to sleep with prominent customers as if it was part of their job description.
Less than a century ago, women were thrown in jail for having the temerity to demand the right to vote, and a law suit was taken to the privy council (back then above Canada's supreme court) to have women declared 'persons'. ( more on google. )
