Re:Whats the advantage of this tech?
SpaceX has tried this. The problem is landing in the water is violent. They kept destroying their rockets. The Shuttle SRB's can do it only because they are made of about 1/2" thick high strength steel. Even then when they built one for ARES IX test it went higher and landed harder and this was the result.

FREEDOM! ?
Dare we dream?
People in America once dreamed of the liberty to do as they damn well pleased.
And look what they did with their "freedom".

Thing is, Android is for hackers.
No, it's not.
It's open source. Who's that of interest to - accountants?
Absolutely. It's for accountants at carriers and OEMs who want a platform with no R&D expense.
And lawyers. Licensing is always about lawyers.
The fact that the terms of the license happen to mean that a few incidental hackers can get the source and tinker with it is a minor side benefit. Google's main purpose in open-sourcing Android is to get as many OEMs using the platform as possible, so that as many end users will be storing their information on Google's servers as possibles
Apple has no slogan. Don't know where you got that idea.

Good idea. You should go look up what "slogan" means.
That's not a slogan, any more than "Don't be evil" is Google's slogan. (Really, it's not, never was.) They're both lines from various public statements that became internet memes.

It's a good, but expensive, system.
The AS&E Z-backscatter systems are quite good. There's some X-ray exposure, and they're very expensive, but they're effective. They image by atomic number, and can distinguish elements. It's not just density any more, like transmission X-rays. This technology is much more effective (and intrusive) than microwave-based systems.
The machines need a huge number of X-ray detectors, are physically large, very expensive, and aren't that fast. The latest generation of machines are about 2/3 the size of the previous ones (which were so big that they wouldn't fit through standard doors) and are faster. But they're still big.
If the TSA is going to throw money at something, this is at least something that works.
The San Ysidro border US border checkpoint has several lanes of the big version for cars. This thing is the size of a drive-through carwash. It's too slow to use for primary inspection, though; only some vehicles are run through it. The biggest weakness of the technology is that it is slow.

Re:Cultural Differences ?
Quite a few other fonts do. I always wondered why the LA Times use that edgy almost Germanic font (Engravers Old English) for their name Logo Would street gangs have used that font for their tattoos if the newspaper has chosen something more modern?
At university, I always found that hand-outs with those sharp pointy fonts gave me sore eyes, but some academics seemed to insist on these fonts for their "traditional appearance" (they had been used to having everything typed out - Theano Didot
I'd download the online version and change the font to Helvetica. Was their preference based on the textbooks they had read?"Data70" is another classic font that was meant to be futuristic in the 1970's, but it is now seen as somewhat "retro" forty years later.

Coffee makers need the time, because you can make them do something at a specific time.
No, they don't. I use this to make the coffee maker do something at a specific time. And it turns it off, too, so the coffee doesn't burn.

Re:Observation
Frequently, there is a combined red/green light on the bow of a ship. The way it works is this: Looking down on the boat and imagining a clock face with the 12 at the front of the boat, from 12 o'clock to (roughly) 4 o'clock would be green. 4 o'clock to (roughly) 8 o'clock would be white, and 8 o'clock to 12 o'clock would be red. Except 8 and 4 are 120 degrees from 12, but the red and green lights only shine through a horizontal angle of 112.5 degrees. The white stern light covers 135 degrees.

Re:Tiny airplane seats
Also gotta love the built-in head rests that are just around the shoulder level so I end up sitting in a leaning forward position. I'm only 5'10 and I have that issue, I can just imagine how much it sucks for you.
Oh, and here is real picture of the seats Ryan air was proposing.

Re:CGI wishes
Here's a "eh" solidworks PCB. Give it a bit of cleanup, but it on a background like a model's palm/hand, put it right side up so you can read (how did that slip thru?), work a little on the textures, and its all good.
http://bdm.cc/projects/zigboard/zigboard3d.jpg
Here's a "eh" real photo of a PCB which may or may not link properly. Lets list the faults. Bad lighting leads to shadows, half of each resistor is illuminated and half in shadow. bright camera flash reflection in the center and off some solder joints. The focus plane is obviously near the camera... look at the solder joints holding the two PCBs together, you can see whats going on but they're not in sharp focus.
Now you have to realize the solidworks example is at least an attempt at a marketing mock up, and the genuine pic is merely trying to show a manufacturing fault to someone else, not create a work of art. Still, they're fairly typical examples of what you easily get with CGI vs pics.

Re:Interesting but not convincing. Circ Polarizati
Thanks for the pointer - that helps. My concept of 'twist rate' seems to be borne out as |m|, although what's shown seems to be the whole EM wave spiraling vs the E and M components being polarized. That's cool!
The images in the right column of the diagram look suspiciously like propagation modes in circular waveguide to me.
You might also be interested in this ham's work which exploits the Aharonov-Bohm Effect:
Robert Zimmerman, NP4B/VE3RKZ, describes five years of research at McMaster University in “Transmission and Reception of Longitudinally-Polarized Momentum Waves.” James Clerk Maxwell’s famous equations of electromagnetic radiation predict an alternative form of radiation, which Zimmerman refers to as vector potential radiation. He was involved in research that results in a demonstration of the communications potential of what was previously considered to be only a theoretical curiosity.
Google around a bit for 'vector potential waves'. Here's one tantalizing snippet. According to Zimmerman and others, metallic antennas are useless to receive these waves - Zimmerman uses plasma in the form of a fluorescent bulb!

Re:It all boils down to the war.
. The two provisions that I am referring to are the downsizing of the CIA and the data barrier between the FBI and the CIA which was put in place during those years.
The data barrier between the CIA and FBI always existed. The OSI and OCI were part of the intelligence directorate in the war department. The FBI reported to the attorney general. The USA has always, and still does separate domestic and foreign agencies. There is more cooperation and communication since the 9/11. But Americans have always been hesitant to allow much. Clinton doesn't deserve particular blame there, he didn't do anything.
In terms of the CIA, there was a drop off but the cold war cleanup was happening. Most of the Bush-41 happened early.
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRxknWPOP4m371QHlbS6Y6yNzU5lUym7dbLyXylpubB3whZ0M6m
There is no huge cutting of the CIA, relative to what was happening generally to defense. I guess you can argue that Clinton was not particularly focused on intelligence, but no president since Kennedy had been huge on the CIA until Bush-43.

What's wrong with using the for free 911 service on any of the pay phones on every BART platform?
Have you seen them, sweetie? I mean, if the design was a little more clumbsy, they might have a certain, you know, ironic retro chic. But if someone saw me using on of those I'd literally die of embarrassment. Like wearing brown shoes with a black belt.
Plus, you simply don't know who might have touched them. Homeless people, linux users. Euwww, yucky yucky!

It is for the purposes of issuing an injunction against releasing those products, should they cause problems.
And as for Samsung copying the "design" of the iPhone, the iPhone is rectangular based shape with a screen. And while they look similar, so do Addidias shoes look similar to Nike (same basic shape).

This one's in pretty calm air, though, and the corkscrew is probably energy scrubbing, maybe the guidance system having a temporary issue, maybe a layer of different wind direction:

This, on the other hand, is a time-lapse exposure of the flame, so its path is affected by wind; the smoke is not visible at all:

Re:Would the real Leslie Sobon please stand up
This is a photo of Leslie Sobon Alright, that's pretty good, but then these are also photos of Leslie: one two three four That's quite a range there, never know what you're going to get.
Are you new to dealing with human beings (I was going to say "women" but then realized even that was too narrow)?
Every single one of those pix looks like the same attractive woman. But people look a bit different from time to time, like when they are working vs when they are posing for an "image" shot. It is exactly the same with guys as with gals, except that you don't have the same "appearance police" mentality scrutinizing the guys for imperfections like you do with gals.
This reminds me of the candid paparazzi snaps of, say, Jennifer Aniston picking up some hygiene products on a midnight run to 7-11 at midnight in her sweats. Someone who is possibly the world's most beautiful woman (sorry Ashwariya) looks kind of dowdy under those conditions but she is still the same person and could look absolutely dazzling later in the morning. If she doesn't pass your "always must look beautiful test", its your problem not hers.
Guys who expect woman to be glamorous 24/7/365 are either very rich or idiots. Both sets are jerks.

Re:Weird....
There was this article in Wired magazine talking about space junk and bringing them down with a giant tether. It seems like the balloon idea might work with large pieces of junk, but it seems like the bigger threat are the small pieces no larger than a few inches. The article stated that the ISS had a few close calls with some pieces of junk no larger than a baseball that could have caused massive damage if it hit the station. We can't tied a balloon or tether to every little piece out there. We need a giant space vacuum like this one!
