Re:Not too bad.....You haven't seen crapping out until you've seen it in the latest Opera 9 beta build: psychedelic!
Not only that, but the bars multiply every second so you have to close it quickly! And it also starts consuming monster CPU time.

Re:Not too bad.....
It's crapping out on Konqueror (3.5.2) as well. Cool screenshot
That said all 3 were very nice designs. I'd hate to be the person picking out a winner. -

MOD PARENT UP!
There was no reason to change the title; the previous one was more informative, and a lot less flamebaitish.

is "cult of Apple" like "cult of Scientology"?You sound like somebody who'd know from experience.
What I don't understand is why an Apple fanatic would think Apple was well served by preventing the release of information which comes plainly within the "fair use" copyright doctrine (ONE page out of HOW many?) which will protect users from serious injury and/or serious machine damage and the company from serious legal liability when some poor sucker has discovered that his computer has set his lap on fire. Not unreasonable, a CPU meltdown could easily ignite a battery.
Would you sue Apple if a CPU melted down in your lap and you wound up in the ER, perhaps missing... never mind, I doubt you've got a pair anyway.
The company should already have put out a recall notice on the affected computers. Their alternative is winding up on the losing side of lawsuits announced with newspaper headlines describing how Apple laptops aren't safe to have on your lap and accompanying stories describing *dangerous* manufacturing incompetence. I'm sure MS and a whole lot of Windows laptop vendors would be happy to highlight this in future product ads. A recall makes them look like good guys and shows they've made an honest try to protect their customers rather than waiting for somebody to sue them. Besides, once they lose a lawsuit or two, they'll have to do the product recall anyway.
Improper application of heat sink grease to a modern CPU/cooler by a manufacturer certainly looks like negligence to me. Seen the image? I have, and if I owned an affected machine, I'd either take it to the dealer or open it up IMMEDIATELY.
They also should have posted that page and the fix on their own company website for independent service technicians and end users whose machines are out of warranty.
If you think Apple's desire to protect its intellectual property trumps user safety and product liability... it's a good thing for Apple you don't work there.
As for me... while I'm likely to buy a Mac anyway sooner or later, reading this tells me that I won't be buying stock in the company and that I'd better keep my eyes open for more ugly surprises from Apple if I do buy. Since I generally do my own computer maintenance anyway, this is no big deal as long as Apple doesn't keep the bad news to itself. If I get my computer screwed up or get hurt because Apple's protecting its IP, I'd sue in a heartbeat.
Yes, this would make me disloyal to Apple. Since I've never wanted to be known as a fanboy and believe that a vendor should only get whatever loyalty to me it can earn with a good product or by going "above and beyond the call of duty" to help me with problems, that isn't a problem for me.
Any product liability lawyers reading this should go NOW to this page and save a copy along with the info on Apple's attempt to suppress this information. I'm sure that there will be lawsuits soon.
Speaking as a Linux user, I'm not fanatic about any company or OS... just about getting my work done. All this tells me is that Apple's already started its slow descent into being "just another company". Too bad, but it happens to just about all companies sooner or later.
Many look at lawsuits as something like the death penalty or a nuclear first-strike. They're not. It is a civil matter taken before authority for resolution.
They are if one can't afford an attorney to respond to the IP owner in court, and that includes most people. -

Wow
I saw the picture of their service manual on the SA forums. It's shows the guy putting an entire tube of thermal grease on an area that is around 1/2 square inch. So, after all is said and done in the manufacturing process, Macbook pro's probably have around four tubes of thermal grease in them. That really is insane. One tube alone should be able to do three or four laptops.
I'm suprised the laptops didn't outright fail due to the heat.
If anyone is interested, here is what the parent poster is talking about:

Here's my 1-second ad for Diet Pepsi and Mentos...

Mint Mentos+2-liter of Diet Pepsi/Coke = Minor hillarity during a work break. Warm cola tends to work better than cold, 5-10 mentos seems to more than do the trick.
There - that might just sell some otherwise undrinkable/inedible snacks!

Seattle is close to Redmond
Ok, we always associate Redmond to Microsoft, but the original King of Video Games (Nintendo) also resides in Redmond.
Seeing as to how Redmond is, what, 30-50 miles away from Seattle, is it really a surprise that Seattle is Gamer's Haven?
On another note, here's an interesting bug (its an image) in Slashdot (I dont know what it means, but if Im to take a guess, I'm being informed of the upcoming story even though I'm not a subscriber -_-;;) -
Google being a little hypocritical?
Has anyone installed the latest IE7 beta, gone to google.com and followed the prompts that ask if you want to use google as the integrated search?
The results are fairly pertinent to this discussion.
Google doesn't just become a search option - it becomes the default integrated search client. Meaning that everytime you restart IE7, google will be used as the integrated search client unless you manually change it to Microsoft Search each time you start IE7.
And while users are making an active choice to install google integrated search, how many users do you think will start up IE7 for the first time, visit google and follow the on-screen prompts to insall the google search integration - and then have no idea how to set another search client as the default? -
Re:It's a little late...
Nope, that's not it either. It was an action game, the little marshmallow guy walked around on the screen and did stuff.
The DOS&Mac links were obviously for the anonymous poster wanted Shufflepuck Cafe.
The link at Apple2.org.za is for an Apple][ game named "Floppy", which looks like:

If that's not a little "marshmallow guy", I'm not sure what is. -
Re:IMHO
Contrived?
Perhaps the Tennis one is over the top, but I was just trying to make a point and certainly you can see them calling a game Mario Wii or some mutation of that.
(I can see it now at E3 next year. Someone dressed as the Tingle character will announce the new Zelda Wii.)
They like the short names that can be used in the manner I suggested. That's why we saw GAME_NAME 64 and why we see GAME_NAME DS. I don't believe it is contrived in the least that they will at least *try* to put that Wii crap at the end of games. It's not as crazy as you make it sound:
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9264/1160959221 52rv.jpg
Hopefully the american companies and american divisions of foreign companies will see that Wii does not fit well with any game title.
Why not name it Nintendo Us or something (You know, us as in we!)
Whatever, it's their marketing campaign. Perhaps I'm just not privied to their genius. -
Re:Abuse of monopoly powers
It does not matter that they can switch it. The point is some users won't know they can. Others will know they can, but won't know how.
Try going to google.com using IE 7 and note the big banner at the top right corner that states "Make Google your search engine in Internet Explorer".
(Screenshot)
Even if a user is utterly clueless on how to change the default (which isn't hard at all), once they go to google, all they need to do is click a button and confirm and voila google becomes their default. Just how much easier can it get? -

Re:Used to have that problem
Are you sure you're talking about the original MS Natural? Because that is probably the biggest and heaviest keyboard I have ever owned. See here. Original MS Natural on top, newer Elite on bottom. It's hard to tell but the original is massive and takes up your whole desk.
The MS Natural Elite is the second incarnation and is substantially smaller, lighter, and has better tactile feedback. Excellent keyboard but like I said they tend to wear out after a few years of heavy usage. Don't get me wrong, they will still work, I just find sticky keys (even slightly) make my fingers hurt (especially when the shift starts to go, that kills my pinky).
I love the feel of those keyboards and the huge Ctrl Win Alt keys are great for games. I just wish the keypad wasn't there. -
Lower comment volume? (stats)
I don't know about Digg, but Slashdot's comment volume is dropping like a rock.
-
/. effect is dying...
Anecdotally, I've heard the Slashdot effect isn't nearly what it used to be. And the statistics are there to support this claim. The rate of commenting sitewide (including journals, polls, and user-created sids) is down over 25% from its peak in 2004-2005. This is publicly verifiable knowledge; just dig around in old stories and note the comment IDs.

Re:Someday soon ... like 2050Sad, but true
I'm working for a group that does ECoG (Electro-Cortocography), and even our resolution is too poor to accurately control things in more than two dimensions. A breakdown of the different resolutions of Brain-Computer-Interfacing is here. The problem with EEG is that the skull acts as a signal damper that disperses and blurs the electromagnetic waves created by the neurons. Though we can still detect the waves created, it becomes increasingly more difficult to discern what area of the brain created these waves, much less what neuron(s) did.
A breakdown of the different types of BCI currently being developed and researched:
- EEG - Electro-Encephalograph - Biggest advantage is that anyone can use it, as it can be worn like a helmet or a headband. Though because it is non-invasive, it has extremely poor resolution
- ECoG - Electro-Cortocography - Though it needs to be implanted inside the skull, it produces fairly good resolution. Also, because it only sits on top of the brain as opposed to inside gray matter, it has much less of a chance to form scar-tissue (though still greater than zero). Tough to get more than one dimension of control.
- Single Receptor - A microscopic electrode is placed directly in contact with a specific neuron or group of neurons. This allows researchers to directly measure the potential of one neuron firing. Of course, this requires the electrode to be implanted. This form of BCI is also very prone to scar-tissue buildup, causing the signal to become weaker and possibly lost as the body reacts to a foreign object in the brain.
- Light Reactive Imaging - Still very theoretical - A laser is trained on a single neuron and its reflectance is picked up by a separate sensor. When the neuron fires, the laser light pattern and wavelengths that are reflected change slightly. This allows researchers to monitor a single neuron while leaving the tissue "untouched", negating the issue of scar-tissue buildup. However, this technology is not able to penetrate the skull yet, as would be needed for external/non-invasive BCI
More information about BCI and ECoG can be found in a presentation from a WashU professor. Check pages 9-11 for some good slides -

Fark != Digg
Digg comments are the same type of comments that Fark has... people talking about stuff they have no clue of.
Maybe that's true, but until Digg allows users to post pictures of cute animals, Fark wins by default. -

Re:Ask.com Maps and Directions
I took a look at TFA. Is it me or they don't discuss this new important feature: Ask.com Maps & Directions [ask.com].
i tried out the maps feature and what i found was that ask maps had a nicer picture and could zoom farther, but seemed to have older satelite images. (this is all dealing with the satelite, or 'arial', view)
here is an image from ask maps.
here is an image from google maps.
my preference is with google on this fun feature. -

Video of Windows install on imacYou can see a mysterious video here which seems to be proof that the job has been done (obviously the person is being secretive about how he did it until he claims his reward). Brilliant - now we can have the viruses, spyware and blue screens of death that I thought I had left behind. Of course the positive side is that there is now no reason not to buy an Apple, with the beautiful Mac OSX for all your day to day tasks, and Windows for those other programmes/games you think you can't live without.
