Wow. RT doesn't have original Star Wars on there but The Last Jedi comes in at #27 of all time (which would be appropriate if it was just a list of Star Wars movies and content, it would be right behind the Christmas Special).

This sounds like the exact plot for the movie Johnny Mnemonic. The "black shakes" was affecting much of the population, due to excessive exposire to technology, and the "big pharma" / pharmacorp were keeping the cure a secret because "it was more profitable to treat the symptoms than to cure the patient"

As I recall, it didn't end well for PharmaCorp.

I'm a huge fan of the manga... Waited for the movie since it was announced that Cameron bought the movie rights, as it was known already that he is a fan...
And I can't get myself to watch it.

Basically, when Cameron passed the project on to Rodriguez it was obvious this will not be anything like the story in the manga.
It may LOOK like it... here and there...
But Rodriguez is neither a fan who'd keep it all kinda there by simply sticking to a 1:1 adaptation - nor is he intellectual enough to read, understand and adapt the subtleties of the story.

As for motorball...
In the manga it is all about self-discovery and self-actualization by reaching one's ultimate potential in a battle with the Universe which dictates that you can't win, break even or get out of the game.
And liberating oneself by reaching for and achieving the "freedom to".

To see anything like it in a movie, I'd advise going to the source - 1975 Rollerball.
There it is more about individualism as a solution... but it is just a metaphor for that same self-actualizing battle with the world.

It does sound like it. I'm also curious to see whether China's latest attempt to go the other way and produce a Hollywood-style live-action sci-fi blockbuster is going to pan out in the west. Initial impressions of "The Wandering Earth", an adaptation of a novel by Cixin Liu, seem a lot more favourable than their previous efforts, so it's looking promising, and it took in $443m within China in less than 10 days, apparently, although it's only got a fairly limited international release so far. Anything that breaks the stale same-old-rehashed-crap-with-better-FX movies Hollywood keeps pumping out is fine by me, even if it is badly dubbed and/or subtitled.

When the government is so desperately short on the natural variety, I'll vote for artificial intelligence every time.

That's something I miss about modern movie going... there is less audience participation. I don't mean the rehearsed participation like what you get with Rocky Horror... I mean the real world, improvised stuff that is so perfect at the moment that it forever alters your experience of the film, even when you watch it at home years or decades later.

Today, they kick people out of the theatre for that kind of stuff.

Yeah, I went to see Highlander II. Expectations were high, based on the original.

What a letdown.

Not long into that dreck, the half of the audience left in the theater were all mocking it. Yeah, it was Friday after happy hour...

That's cult thinking. Us vs Them. Aren't interested in finding a common middle ground. The Fallacy of Duality happens in politics, religion, etc. "I'm right, therefore your wrong." instead of a more enlightened perspective: "Maybe I'm *part* right, Maybe you're *part* right" -- but that takes humility to admit one doesn't have all the answers, and that everyone's POV is only a partial perspective.

It also doesn't help that critical thinking isn't taught in school.

Every social group has its biases. e.g. /. in the early 2000's used to be heavy Pro-Linux Anti-MS. In 2019 we see way more MS fanboi's making excuses for MS's spyware and lack of respect for its customers.

We see the same bullshit with "hate speech." People are no longer interested in learning. They would rather censor a different opinion. Because if we are forced to have a healthy dialog about opposing opinions we might learn a) our POV in incomplete, or b) worse, we were wrong.

How do you feel about the bartender in Passengers? I mean he's obviously not strong AI, but he's faking it though a fairly rich set of bartender mannerisms, he can pull in external information like when the ship is due to arrive, he'll remember and play on information you tell him but ultimately if you push him you'll just run into a wall like "Jim, these are not robot questions" or "Hmm. It's not possible for you to be here." I'm not saying what we have today is anything like Arthur, but I'm not sure strong AI is a necessity. Just don't tell him you and your date have no secrets from each other when you do....

Prices which will very soon look like a bad joke compared to the competition, which is going to come from car companies which have a depth of engineering talent that Tesla cannot hope to match.
