FireflyFirefly is a series created by Joss Whedon in 2002. It was aired on Fox, and canceled after just half a season (perhaps due to it's anti-authoritarian nature).
Serenity is the movie sequel, scheduled to come out this fall.
The entire series is centered around an interesting crew of renegade smugglers in the distant future. There are strong elements of the Wild West. It's basicly a space opera, like star wars, but without all the lame acting.
the DVD is well worth the purchase price. If you don't believe me, grab a torrent of the first episode off http://www.isohunt.com/ and check it out.

Re:The Internet is my TiVoUmm, strange as it may sound, I have never downloaded a tv program etc. via torrent, but I do have two torrent aggregating sites bookmarked
:)I've never tried these, and I think they might be relatively new sites, so caveat emptor I guess, but here you go:
Apparently there is also a place called Pirate Bay or something, that is based in a European country that also has links to torrents.
Again - never used any of them, but hope it helps? (Disclaimer: Information given in the anticipation that it is used for legal purposes only, natch

Re:The real revolution...
Ummmm....yeah, your point here is...what? This is a site that has links to
.torrent files, hosted on other sites, while it was down, you could go and use IsoHunt. Or any other BT site. In the end, the ability of TorrentSpy to stay up has nothing at all to do with the quality of music available on the web for free. -

BitTorrent Link for Hi-Res Video.
Just in case, I made a BT link for the video and have it running in the background. So if the site does get SlashDotted, you know where to get it.

Lokitorrent down after Suprnova. Who do we blame?Submitted article yesterday and reject, sign. Here it is.
As I reported on isoHunt.com and from the sources, Lokitorrent has been shutdown by US court order. The scandal surrounding its owner "taking the community's donations and ran" aside, this sets a bad precedent as Loki should qualify for OSP Safe Harbor under the DMCA. I don't know what exactly was the settlement between Loki and the MPAA, but my question for you is: how many hoops of links (.torrent should be considered a link) you have to jump through the internet, before it's not considered contributory infringement? With the historic example of the Universal vs. Betamax case and the resulting profitable home video business, what are possible business models the MPAA/RIAA can use to harness P2P as the next generation distribution channel? As I run the largest BitTorrent search engine around and was hit by MPAA's letters, this is of some personal concern to me.

isoHunt's .torrent index stats
With my work on indexing BitTorrent sites, I can shed some light: nothing changed.
From http://s3.isohunt.com/stats.php?mode=btSites
You can see smaller sites on the list relative to Suprnova (it had more than 30,000 torrents online at any one time), but total torrents available didn't change (60,000+ online). As I keep adding more sites, index size is getting bigger than before SN died actually, online torrent count is close to 70,000. Peers also remain at above the 1 million mark. -
It's Not Dead.
No, I don't think it's dead.
Tons of torrent sites still exist: For everything (music/movies/games/etc):
ISOHunt (both BT and IRC)
VIP Torrents
For TV:
BTEFNet
TV-Swarm
TVTorrents
And for those who are only into "legal" material:
LegalTorrents
Not to mention, most Linux distributions offer a BitTorrent alternative download method for obtaining the ISO.
So it's definitely not dead... -

1. Has SuprNova.org really closed? top Yes, it has. 2. When will SuprNova.org be back? top Never as it was. If it eventually does come back up, it won't feature ANY links to torrents at all. 3. What about the torrents I'm currently downloading/have queued, will they still download? top Maybe, probably. However if they don't, it has nothing to do with SuprNova.org's closure. If the tracker for that particular torrent is still online and there are seeds, your file will still download. 4. Will joining the IRC channel and spamming about some random nonsense and/or "BRING SUPRNOVA BACK UP" help at all or bring SuprNova.org back? top NO. So don't. Really, don't. 5. umm no, we are more alive than ever. We chose to cooperate as per our copyright policy: http://isohunt.com/dmca-copyright.php

BravoOne of the most insightful comment / summary I've read.
I wrote a little piece myself here.
Curious if Neo would be in the "outer Matrix" after he died with Smith. Afterall, he fulfilled his "messianic" purpose, and his loss of purpose was actually what allowed him to "kill" Smith, as you suggested.
And on the shittiness of Matrix 2+... I don't agree. The premise is not as original as Matrix 1 and the storytelling may not be as straight forward to understand, but appreciate the depth of the script. It's rare in many movies today.

A Friendlier ApproachI've circulated the idea of using DNS around the BitTorrent mail list for some time now, but it uses the DNS in a different way from distributing the torrent files themselves through DNS caches. It's doubtful putting data inside caches would "bog down the DNS system", but to turn DNS into essentially web servers is:
1. An ugly, ugly hack, and a wrong tool for the job (tm)
2. Wrong using others' resources in a way that is not intended (serving binary data)My goal of using the DNS is however the same: solve the dead trackers problem. But to serve data directly from DNS, my idea to use what DNS is for: route traffic. You request the torrent's 40 byte info_hash as a subdomain of the DNS server's domain, and it returns you the optimal tracker's IP. For example:
{torrent_hash}.bthub.com
and bthub.com will be where i'll host the DNS service. It's basically a dynamic DNS server, updated frequently, of all known torrent hashes from different trackers in its database (my estimation is around 15000 - 20000 torrents, or subdomains. I know because I run a BT search engine, see my sig). This way, you don't "hack" the DNS, but you get the benefit of:
1. Dynamic routing to the tracker with the most ppl downloading your file, or the biggest "swarm", and hence the highest speed
2. Re-routing to a SINGLE new tracker when one diesThe 2nd benefit is important, as the case today is ppl just randomly pick a new tracker when the original dies, without knowing how big the swarm is on the new tracker. This splits the original torrent swarm across multiple trackers, which don't talk with each other (yet).
There are some discussion on the mail list of adding connectivity between the trackers, similar to how you link IRC servers together into a network. But that's no where near a proposal, and using DNS to act as a "hub" for the trackers would need the least effort and changes to the BT protocol and trackers.
I discussed this idea in detail on this thread "Decentralizing trackers: Use hubs", feel free to take a look.

Linux UI bounties project proposal1. List things to integrate and improve Linux UI on desktop (KDE, Gnome, etc. UI frameworks)
2. Get IBM, Redhat, etc. corporate support and funding
3. Attach weights to TODO items, distribute bounty $ by weights and total fundings available
4. ??
5. Uber Linux desktop (no, not profits this time.)My rationale is that, as pointed out by some earlier comments, Linux UI's inconsistencies and often failure to work at all without hacking things around is due to no central direction and vision for UI design. IBM provides IT services in deploying OSS in companies while commercial distros like Redhat do QA on OSS packages, but besides KDE and Gnome, there needs to be a more coherent vision and a mean to make it happen.
If you are interested, I've created a temporary forum where we can discuss this further. Excuse the rest that's going on at the site ^^

Re:Terms.
But we've already had this for a long time. There are plenty of bots that hang out in channels and index everything offered for XDCC transfer or on FSERVs.

I'm sure there are more. And I'm not saying that Google's version of this wouldn't be useful or tastefully done. But this sort of thing has been around for a long time and it's hardly ground-breaking.
