Re:Increasing trend
You mean like youtube ads that shows me the same ad for every 2 minute video I watch? Thank you ad blocks for being able to block all those annoying youtube ads.
Heh, no joke. My initial response to the first sentence of your post was, "Youtube has ads??". I really forgot that it did. My attitude towards advertising and most marketing is: fuck 'em. I actually used JunkBuster back in the days of Netscape and dial-up. It was an ad-filtering proxy -- browsers at that time had plug-ins but they did not have the capability for sophisticated extensions, so this was one of the only practical ways to block ads. The old URL (I still remember it!) was internet.junkbuster.com, but it hasn't been maintained in a long time. Now it just gives a link to EPIC and two privacy-related sites. According to Wikipedia, the proxy program itself hasn't been maintained since 1998.
Junkbusters was a group that advocated against advertising in all forms, especially direct marketing (professional nuisances). They provided that filtering proxy before much else was available, they gave advice on reducing physical junk mail, and (as this was prior to the Do Not Call list) gave tips to reduce or defeat telemarketing calls, if I recall correctly.
Am I the only one who remembers them? -
What about Junkbuster proxy?
Does anyone still use Junkbuster? I found it quite useful a while back. I suppose it wouldn't take much work to get it back up to snuff with easylist or something similar.

Re:Adblock
I never, ever see porn ads because I've got Adblock Plus installed in FF. If she prefers IE for some weird reason then just put an ad-filtering web-proxy on your network like Junkbuster.
You could also install IE7Pro. It adds the following:
"Tabbed Browsing Management, Spell Check, Inline Search, Super Drag Drop, Crash Recovery, Proxy Switcher, Mouse Gesture, Tab History Browser, Web Accelerator, User Agent Switcher, Webpage Capturer, AD Blocker, Flash Block, Greasemonkey like User Scripts platform, User Plug-ins, MiniDM, Google sponsored search,IE Faster and many more power packed features."

If she is clever enough to get IE to run properly on the aforementioned linux systems, she is clever enough to configure her own porn-blocker...

Redirect all outbound connection attempts on port 80 through your router to that proxy and you'll be good to go. That way she won't have porn ads splashed in her face but she'll still be able to Google for hot guys with SafeSearch turned off

Re:outrageous expiration date cookies
What I'd REALLY like is a browser that doesn't save cookies for sites I haven't bookmarked, or combine the ideas- cookies for sites not bookmarked aren't saved very long.
I use Internet Junkbuster for cookie whitelisting, for all of my browsers at once. It can also filter out Referer info for all but the sites you have cookie-whitelisted. -
Re:MAC OSX Complains
Camino would be much better if it had adblocking. I'll just stick to Safari and PithHelmet I guess.
This is why I use Junkbuster as opposed to relying on a browser based system.
No matter what browser I decide to use Safari, Moz, Firefox, Camino or IE (shudder) I get the same filtering rules.
I tried Privoxy, but I found that for some odd reason it really slowed down local PHP scripts and since I use my PowerBook mostly for development I went back to Junkbuster. -
Re:I don't trust any so-called "browser helpers".What about the Google toolbar? I always have it visible and I find it very useful. (I'm sure some people would complain about privacy issues, but the warnings are clear and the relevant features are easy to disable.)
Power IE is a good shareware toolbar which can block popups and ads had has various other useful features. It's considerably faster than using a proxy server to block ads, and you don't have that extra process running.
You can't say that all 3rd party browser add-ons are bad. You just have to be careful with what you install, especially stuff that is supposedly "FREE!!!!"

Re:Supress these commercials?
Junkbuster
works for most modern Operating systems and Windows based operating systems.
we added it at work and it made a 20% reduction in bandwidth use on it's own.
-
There's moreFirebird also has an extension called ``Flash Click to View'' (self-explanatory) which is an incredible feature. No more annoying Flash ads!
And to really kill ads, download and set up the Internet JunkBuster proxy, which has a blockfile you can use to filter out ad sites. A quick Google will find some nice blocklists you can use as a base to build your own.

Re:Sure...
Get 'em hooked, then they'll have to keep joining, once they see that the banners have once again quadrupled in size!
what banners? oh you mean those not running Junkbuster
Buy a slashdot subscription to support the site. dont buy one to get rid of ad's.
Note: you can modify junkbuster to only show the banners you want to see... I only see an AD when a thinkgeek ad pop's up. (hint: AD id field) -
Re:Cookie fascists suck ass (OT)
If you are so irritated by cookies, why don't you just install Junkbuster and set it up to drop all cookies? Or better yet, only allow cookies from sites you trust and then you can turn off cookie confirmations.
I would imagine that it would take you less time than you spend clicking on cookie dialogs in a day. -
Re:BFast??
I honeslty don't remember what bfast.com is, at one point I went looking and decided to add them to my block list for JunkBuster all I get now is a little message saying that URL was blocked.
-
Re:Damn - fooled again
As others mentioned, it's in
/etc/hostsBut if you want really effective blocking, you're much better off with something like Junkbuster.

Guess it's a good thing I use JunkBuster and wear my tin foil hat while surfing the web...
Have a day.. -
Junkbuster is your friend.Anyone know of any way of transparently replacing the user-agent strings at the NAT box?
Yes, one way is to transparently proxy to junkbuster and have it rewrite the user agent.
-

In fact, here's my blockfile.

Re:OT: Slashdot using Flash ads!!!Ads? WTF is an ad? Here, just to get you started, use this in your blockfile:

privoxy
Just download and install privoxy It's available for both Linux and Windows, and it's based on junkbuster but is much more powerful. The default settings will clear out 90+% of the banner ads and other distractions and you can fine-tune it to catch even more.

Does it respect proxies yet?
Mozilla is good, mozilla is great. The only thing keeping me from using it over Konqueror right now is the fact it seems to ignore my proxy setting. I use The Internet Junkbuster to remove unwanted (read: all) ads and other things. Mozilla up to RC1 seems to overlook this and I see ads all over the place. It may be due to JavaScript url fetching not going through the proxy, but I'm not sure
And don't tell me to use moz's built-in ad blocking, because I've already got a huge blockfile, I want to block for all browsers across the network, and it usually screws up rendering to use the builtin stuff anyway.
This is a great web browser; it's really faster than other GUI browsers I've used, renders nicely, and has all the features. But until it respects proxies (I use Squid to cache stuff too, helps a lot when all you've got is a modem), I can't use it.
:-( -
Re:that kind of Advertising is Dead, anyway
or more of the bugs across the bottom that state "brough to you by...". so if you want to watch the content, you have to see the addvertising at the same time.
Until someone invents a something like this for television. You might not be able to block out the ad "download" because a TV signal is one big signal, not individual files like a website and it's auxiliary banner ads, but you could certainly create something to modify the signal by putting a big black box over certain portions of the screen. -
Re:Slightly off topic, but related...
-
Tried to access that page, but......obviously my Mozilla browser and Junkbuster proxy are not officially Microsoft sanctioned. This is the result, a result I've seen on many many many Microsoft-driven websites:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d'
Type mismatch: 'CInt'
/education/content/DonatedComputers.asp, line 63This, to me, looks just soooooo unprofessinal... The same browser/proxy combo works on most other sites, except those Microsoft-driven ones and some sites which insist on getting a valid Referer: tag (which I block).
I know I would not want my companies website to display this nonsense to potential customers...
-
Re:Is it coincidence
i don't know I use Junkbuster.

It's Time to Pay the Piper - Slashdot is DyingHow much time do you really think slashdot has left?
This is an obvious act of desperation. Everyone knows that internet ads no longer pay any money. This is not 1998 anymore. Mostly, the only people who ever clicked on them were the newbies to the internet... and it didn't take long for them to learn their lesson. The rest of the people have either learned to ignore them or they use a proxy server like Junkbuster or Filterproxy .
This is so predictable. They say that history repeats itself, but this is too much for even me to deal with. Most websites that do this are dead within a year. Everybody knows that internet advertisers no longer pay any money. How much money do they expect to make from 0.2 cents a click when Slashdot caters mostly to internet veterans who have either learned to ignore adds or use a proxy server religiously?
Slashdot has become "a victim of its own success." Can you imagine how much money it must cost to pay for their bandwidth alone? If you've done a lot of browsing over the last 5 years and seen this happen to many of your favorite websites you know that intrusive adds are the first step. Next comes restricted usage for non-subscribers. Next comes access denied to non-subscribers. Next comes the obituary and farewells.
Bye bye Slashdot. We knew ye well.
:-\
